They had lunch specials, and I ordered the chile relleno fajita honestly, for the price, it was outstanding. The place was packed, but now I get why. Service was fast, and the waiters were cool cracking jokes and keeping it light, which made the whole experience even better. And to top it off, you can finish with an ice cream twist at the end. Plenty of indoor seating and they have a large bar. They were not the best Fajitas we have ever had but for the price you cannot beat it. The service is friendly and the portions are generous; however, it's portions of just okay food. They are generous with the chips and salsa, and the chips are warm, which I appreciate. Their queso is very boring and their salsa is not flavorful. I got a special that includes a taco, enchiladas, a cheese puff, and a fried stuffed poblano. It was all just alright. The thing is that the place is comfy and folks are very happy to be there. It's a sprawling location with a ton of seating, so it's fun to see all the different folks dining here around the holidays. My wife and I went to Tia Marias a few weeks ago. We had recently returned to going there after a long break going to other Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood. We even had our small office party there in December. But the salsa was not fine the other day. It was so hot we could not eat it. It was nothing like their normal salsa. We called our waiter over and he already knew the salsa was too hot. We tried to eat again.....too hot!! We had the manager come to the table, and I think he could not have cared less. He argued that the salsa was different everyday depending on the peppers. I don't think that was a good answer. I have never had it like that before. I have made fresh salsas before. You can prepare the jalapeno blend and add it gradually, but not all at once with no care about the end product. He brought a "new" cup of salsa that tasted like and looked like tomato sauce. We always look forward to chips and salsa before a Mexican meal. Our experience was ruined that night. We will not be going back for a long while. We are going to Don Joses tonight. As we were leaving, I noticed all of the tables I walked by had not touched their salsas either. read more

First of all, the bench we sat in the back had a substantial amount of cushion gone so we sank to the bottom. Very uncomfortable. Second of all my daughter and I had fajitas and they were just ok. There were alot that were burnt. The side plate that had rice beans and pico barley had a half a spoonful. Here's the kicker, we ordered a side of grilled shrimp and they charged me $16 for six measly shrimp. Tia Maria we were really disappointed. Tia Maria's was absolutely packed when we visited, but the energy just added to the experience. Even with how busy it was, the service truly stood out -- especially Enrique. He was hustling nonstop and somehow still made us feel completely taken care of. Our water and tea glasses never dropped below half full, and he checked on us consistently without ever being intrusive. When I'm in the area, I have to make it a point to stop for lunch at Tía Maria's. The salsa is served warm and it's plentiful. I had to stop myself from eating too many chips. I ordered spinach enchiladas. They come with rice and beans. But they don't have vegetarian beans, so I ordered double the rice. I ordered the enchiladas easy on the cheese. And I did overhear the waiter tell the kitchen that. But when my plate came, I don't think there was little cheese on my enchiladas. The tomatillo sauce is tasty. They have free soft serve ice cream. It's delicious. While I'm disappointed about the pork in beans, I really like Tía Maria's. read more

Our family has been coming to Tia's for over 30 years for birthdays, anniversaries (we make plans to go somewhere "special") and then realize that this family owned restaurant is more than just food but a very special spot in our heart and they have always celebrated with us. Our son who lives in Miami always times his flights so we can go straight to Tia's for the best margarita in town and for his beloved carne guisada! Their tortillas are the best, they taste like homemade and cooked perfectly! The tortilla chips are great and the salsa is served warm, just alittle spicy, but perfect! The borrocho beans have bacon and chunks of tomato, the absolute best! I think the food here is much better than Pappasito's and about half the price. Everybody I bring here agrees! Every time I come here I enjoy my visit and that's been about for 16 years now. Tia Maria's is easy to get to (290 and the Loop) with ample parking space and while it can be quite popular and busy I've never waited more than 5 minutes to be seated and usually it's immediate. It's been here for a long time and while Houston is flooded with Tex Mex restaurants I understand this restaurants longevity. Prices are average to below average and yes it's a little worn but in a comfy way. My fave entree here are the fajitas. The serving arrives on a sizzling platter with not only a generous amount of protein but also a lot of onions and bell pepper. Flour and corn tortillas are available and I usually go corn. The charro beans are excellent tasting and full of content and served in a large bowl that could be a small meal unto itself. Seriously! Finally their chips are light and delicious along with the equally delicious warm red salsa. Recently they now provide a green salsa too but it's got too much kick for me. Also the table service is always very attentive. They are always on top of it! The lunch menu offers several dinner offerings at reduced prices so that makes dining her even a better value. This Friday was an exceptionally long wait because there was a school game happening across the street, and the restaurant was slammed! Wait time was about 35 min, and food came out piping hot too! We ordered beef and chicken enchiladas and ordered their Horchata and Pineapple agua frescas ! They were both a hit! The rice was a bit dry and flavorless today, but other than that, everything was just as great as I had remembered. Our server was attentive despite how busy the restaurant was... Why the one star deduction? They were trying to set up a large party behind us and add an additional table and it got so close to me when they were putting down the table, it almost hit me. Not only that, but it was super disruptive while I was eating and enjoying my meal. Maybe it's time to expand your restaurant and add a private room for parties? :) read more

i was there Friday evening with a group of 20+ people to celebrate my great nieces birthday. My sister had made a reservation about a week ago for a section at 7 o'clock. We got there at 10 till seven every 15 minutes the waiter kept saying oh it's just a couple more minutes. It's just a couple more minutes and finally at 7:20. He says It will be another five minutes then another 20 minutes went by we finally got seated close to 7 :40 I asked to speak to the manager, never came to the table, finally when we started placing our order he shows up and I asked him to come around and I said to him I asked to speak to you 40 minutes ago he said I sent somebody to speak to you , that person never came . so I explained what happened and all he could say was I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry it's Friday night. Friday is busiest night of the week and we tell our parties that sometimes you'll have to wait a couple of minutes. I understand that but not 40 minutes .So apparently this manager did not have sufficient managerial experience to handle this type of situation .I would never ever recommend this place again.I will go to another establishment that can obviously accommodate a large party of 20 plus people with a reservation. Also some of these guest that were in attendance are frequent visitors to this establishment they couldn't understand why we were treated so poorly. This is a great spot for happy hour specials or for when your craving Tex-mex food. The margaritas are packed with flavor and just enough Alcohol that all you really need is one to start feeling good after a long day. This place stays busy so parking can be hard at times. I've never had to wait more than 20 mins for a table. They also have much specials everyday of the week. To be honest their lunch portions are just about the same as their dinner portions. Service is pretty good for the most part. On my last visit, after we received our food we didn't see our server for some time. We had to ask another person to get the check for us. I ordered a couple combos and 32oz margarita on the rocks for pickup instead they gave me a small margarita, disagreed with me for what I had paid for, then eventually handed me a frozen margarita with no apology. I got home to find they left out the rice and beans I paid extra for and the "chicken enchilada" was literally empty. Just a tortilla with sauce and iceberg lettuce. This place is trash. This is a study in contrasts. The food is consistently good. The menu prices have not been modified in a decade. Everything is so very cozy and dependable. Quick tips: 1. Piña coladas are excellent. The margaritas are solid, but the piñas are better. 2. If you order tacos, get them "taco bell style" or they will be open faced. 3. The Chunky Guacamole is the best thing on the menu. At $12, it is twice the size of any guacamole you would get at any other restaurant. It has 2 giant avocados and yummy tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. Cheap good tex-mex. I was in the inside room so there wasn't much ambiance beyond looking at other customers from my two seat booth. Service staff were wearing masks consistently in interacting with me. Chips and salsa were good and not too salty. The lack of thirst afterwards indicated that the tortillas were not made with lard. My spinach enchiladas were bright with a nice tart tomatillo sauce. Also they were 8 dollars. Where else can you get such a deal for a triple piece? I'm used to pay 11-13 bucks at the average taqueria inside the loop! I also looked at their lunch specials and they ranged from 6-10 dollars. NEVER FAILS TO SATISFY! Great food , at an unbeatable price. Chips and salsa is to die for in my opinion , that green sauce is addictive. I order the same plate every time i come here. Huevos rancheros. I get my eggs scrambled without the salsa because i like to make lil breakfast tacos and the salsa is too much for me. I like to keep it simple for the most part. Soon i will venture into trying their fajitas and other items. I visit this restaurant exclusively for that breakfast plate :) I Cannot forget to mention that The staff is always alert and mindful towards the guests , very polite and respectful.
