Tired, starving, and looking for a place to eat, I walked to this place from the hostel next door. I am so glad that I did! I ate the best salad of my life here! I ordered a vegan version of the Farmer's salad, which subbed the chicken salad for avocado. It was exceptionally fresh and came with a piece of toasted multi-grain bread as a side. I highly recommend their salads. The service was also great, the employees were very friendly and more than happy to make a custom order. Really quality coffee shop. Lovely French barista served me an espresso in a mini mason jar, a coffee in a massive mug, and a delicious chocolate chip cookie. I saw some of the bagels that people were getting and immediately wished I had gotten one of those as well. There is plenty of seating in mismatched furniture and a small stage that hosts live music. I hosted a gig / birthday party here and it couldn't have been better. Vanessa, the owner, was super helpful, responsive, and easy to work with. She ordered us a huge, delicious cake that people couldn't stop talking about. Everyone also loved the food. They do simple sandwiches and salads, but they do them really well. The cafe now serves beer and wine, making it a great evening spot for music and hanging out. They have a piano, drum kit, amps, two mics, and a few guitars in-house, making the band set-up pretty painless. For a place that doesn't necessarily specialize in live shows, the sound quality was more than decent. I can't wait to see this place grow from a daytime coffee spot to a go-to destination for live music and laid-back drinks. read more

I witnessed the male barista assault a customer. Patron accused employee of gipping him on his bagel. Words were not exchanged but rather they were chucked blindly. Mucho cussing. Employee tosses the returned food at the unsuspecting patron. The immediately uncapped cup of coffee went next, creating a cascade projectile of scorched water. Hollering became more hollering. Decibels were raised. The employee began screaming to the point where his thickening accent completely obfuscated his English assault. Gibberish. It was a cacophony of belligerence until it wasn't. The real shit I was witnessing firsthand got even more real. The employee, possibly French, pushed and shoved the patron multiple times. It was aggressive and terribly uncomfortable to watch. I wanted to rise up and defend the patron because he had done nothing wrong, outside of audibly griping over his incorrect order. Instead I did nothing. The scene continued and still I sat frozen, watching the bearded man, incensed, fuming at the dome, unravel upon the poor customer. I know temper. I know hair-triggers. I know rage. The barista-turned-villain is perennially boiling, bubbling, always an insult away from erupting. What he did to that man was inexcusable and presumably illegal. I watched the defeated customer, who neither enjoyed his bagel nor drank his coffee (despite paying for both), walk into the pouring rain with an uneasy blankness painted over his wet, sullen face. He walked away and I stayed stuck to my wooden chair. He was dumbfounded and so was I, not merely by the act of sudden violence unleashed by the man-in-charge but by my unwillingness to help a fellow man in need. I should've stood up and said something but I was too busy reclining in a state of shock, slurping up my iced mocha, which, now that I think about it, had no taste of coffee and was likely hot chocolate with ice. Seeing what I saw, I guess I'm glad I never mentioned the lack of espresso, because when rage strikes rage, well, that's when the ambulance is called. Bottom line: When you assault a customer you've officially earned that ONE STAR and consider yourself lucky the cops weren't involved. EDIT: I just checked out the other reviews, even those that were removed, and the pattern is painfully glaring. There's a common thread here, Yelp, so don't bother flagging me as well. The male owner (as it turns out) is regularly cited as abrasive and rude. The comments about his total disinterest in the waiting customers while he chats away on his phone behind the counter also rang true in my visit. Apparently the guy is never pleasant and I honestly wonder if he's ever put his hands on another customer before. If he's a menace, which all evidence points to the affirmative, don't visit his establishment. He's a hothead who has no business in customer service. Bushwick has a myriad of spectacular coffee shops. Check them out or risk bodily harm. read more

My favorite place in the Neighborhood ! The Breakfast yogurt is delicious, the salads are fresh and so Yummi, the sandwich are out of control, and the quiches finally taste like the ones in France. And now we can have wine and beer ! That place only gets better and better. Cant wait for the upcoming theme nights, open mics and such, and see how the daily chill and family/friends vibe is gonna change for the evening/nightlife. The orange juice is freshly squeezed and a very large glass for $5, the cappuccino is delicious, and I cannot recommend enough the GIGANTIC bucket of yogurt, with honey, granola, and fruits. So glad I chose this establishment for the 3days I was in Brooklyn. Food and coffee was exceptional. The breakfast menu offerings were made with fresh ingredients and not overpowering. I usually don't write and review but I had a horrible service. I ordered delivery from the apps and received someone else's order with same first name so I called the restaurant and driver took the order back. Restaurant told me they will re-send me a correct order. I understood since people can make mistake. So I told them it's okay and I will wait. And I wait nearly 2 hours but still haven't get the order. I called the restaurant again. They keep saying order went out. And they keep mentioning other person's order with same first name. I have been telling them 3 times that that is not me and I ordered from different apps and we have different last name. Later they found out They have been talking about wrong order and they didn't listen carefully what I am saying and didn't check the order carefully. They don't even know where did my order go. I HAVE HAD THE MOST TERRIBLE, HORRIFYING AND DISGUSTING EXPERIENCE HERE TONIGHT. MY fellow co-workers and I WERE loyal customers for the past 2-3 years. As we discovered this place during residency it became the quaint coffee shop with a great atmosphere that we thought we could frequent for as long as it existed. BUT NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!! Tonight we were asked to leave. After requesting their wifi password, we were asked if we were going to buy anything. Not more than two minutes later, had a woman with a NASTY attitude and tone approached us. She begins with," I know you are our customers......." "...but if you are not going to buy anything, you have to leave." There were only two other customers in a place that seats about 30 people. Perhaps we did not buy anything....YET, however whats the rush? If you know we are your customers, we frequent the establishment, and it is not busy, why are you going to chase us away for a MEASLY, PETTY $5? Not only had we already spent MUCH MORE than that in the past, but it was a shoe in that we would continue to spend our money here time and time again in the future. WTF type of business practice is that?! Ignorance 101? I've noticed the decline in customers over the years. It use to be a pretty packed place and if tonight was just as packed perhaps we could have understood her BEGGING us to buy something. However, it is clear that we are not welcomed here and left shortly after. I cannot recommend this place to ANYONE. It's a damn shame that they are so quick to ask customers to leave from and already EMPTY establishment. The lovely French couple who own this cafe want you to make it feel like home and it is impossible not to. The staff treat you like one of your own even if you are not one of the many returning customers this gem brings. The food is excellent; fresh and a great change to the huge amounts of fast good available. The goats' cheese salad is probably the best you will ever have. Being British tea is pretty important, and this is the only place I have found a drinkable cup of English Breakfast. It is easily the kind of place you can pop into for breakfast (I'd recommend the granola) and end up staying all day looking at the art hanging on the walls, chatting to the staff and getting drawn into live music or poetry events. For me this is a pretty perfect way to spend a day and should definitely be tried by all. read more

Before heading over to Robert's for a late lunch, we stopped by Ange Noir to find a place to cool off and chill out without walking around too much and getting ourselves lost. At 2:30 PM in the afternoon, there weren't too many people hanging out, and by the time we left (about 45 minutes later), the entire place had nearly emptied out. A simple red awning and a red bench around the tree outside signify that you're at Ange Noir, and going in sitting down (much less ordering something) seems to be perfectly fine. We didn't want to spoil our appetite too much, so we split the 'duo' grilled cheese sandwich and had a couple beverages. The grilled cheese was a bit inconsistent - while the cheeses themselves (cheddar and mozzarella) really work well together, it seemed like only one of the sandwich slices actually melted at all; the other one looked like the cheddar and mozzarella had been smashed together but didn't look like it had been grilled much, if at all. The bread was pretty plain, too...I don't mind multigrain bread, but I expected it to be a bit more buttered up given it is a grilled cheese sandwich. My wife went with the ice chocolate (basically cold hot chocolate served with ice) - very smooth flavor and pretty much like drinking chocolate. I had one of the canned beers in the front display fridge (they were not listed, just a 'Beer - $6' on the chalkboard in small print)...craft imperial IPA from Chicago that was solid in flavor and pretty drinkable despite the high ABV. In all - a chill place to chill. It's got some nice touches, like the 'Hell' phone booth between the front and back areas, and the wheel rims that serve as lamps on the sides of the walls. I wasn't blown away, but perhaps when I'm back in the neighborhood I will give it another shot. read more

I've had Yelp for years and never felt the need to write a review. But today that changes because of just how BAD my experience here was. I just wanted something quick to eat in the area and ange noir looked promising. I ordered the avocado salad and was extremely disappointed when it came out. It was basically a pile of arugula with 3 avocado slices and a sprinkle of goat cheese. Like ??? So I asked if I could exchange it for something else. The manager then came up to me and asked what was wrong so I explained how it wasn't what I thought I ordered and mainly that I don't like arugula. She then got the nastiest attitude and told me she couldnt refund me and that I should have read the menu better, told me "well what do you expect to be a salad then?", and that "what you see on the menu is what you get." Like huh?!? We go back to the menu and BOOM there was literally ZERO mention that it would contain arugula (again A LOT OF IT). The look of defeat on her face was pretty satisfying lol. I then ordered this veggie sandwich and honestly think that she or someone may have spit in it just due to her nasty personality. Not to mention how cold it was and completely unmelted the cheese was. Horrible. I would never come back to the establishment and honestly feel bad for the employees for with having to deal with such a mean and cold manager! read more
