I asked for their advice on what kind of lox to order and they cut me a healthy slice to try of each. And the lox is to die for. The nova is the classic, but also got some gravlax and the pastrami lox. All had their unique flavors that were distinctly different. Amazing! And yes ~$60/pound is expensive, but it's artisan, hand carved and they even cut out the little bit of blood line so every bit is perfect. It's worth the splurge every once in a while. I will say though the bagels there were just meh unfortunately. Kinda average and on this day below average if you ask me. If you order yourself a Classic Bagel & Lox Sandwich ($17) like I did, you can watch them filet the salmon fresh from the fish itself to be used just for your sandwich. I did everything bagel and choose Scallion cream cheese, which seems like the popular choice. It's good enough to go out of the way to try once in your life. To be a repeat customer, idk if I want to wait in line for this every weekend. Additionally, there's no seating besides the benches that's outside. Even if you just had a giant meat based meal a couple doors down, you can still make room for one herring. Consider it the Jewish equivalent of surf and turf. Although one of my friends said visiting both LES icons was more akin to a "bang bang". Sometimes it's the small shops that make the biggest mark. This is certainly the case with R&D. The place is tiny, but the fish is mighty. I can't speak highly enough about the Holland Herring. So silky. So delicate. So much fun to eat. Held up by the tail, dragged through a mix of chopped onions and pickles, and lowered down into your awaiting mouth. These things are large. They are going to take a few good sized bites. Enjoy the contrast of textures and flavors. Tilting your head back to eat it almost demands that you close your eyes and savor every moment. Yes, the entire herring case is a marvel. While most folks will walk out of R&D with nova (what most people call lox, but is really cold smoked salmon), the real score is the sable and sturgeon. Or, if you are a salt lover, you can get legitimate belly lox here too. It satisfies the soul to see an appetizing store holding the line. Sure, you can put your smoked fish on a bagel or bialy with cream cheese. However, I submit that fish this good should really be enjoyed in its purest form. Maybe if you want to cut the salt, lay some on a thin piece of old world 100% rye bread. Not the squishy deli stuff, but the hard eastern European kind. Perhaps a dolop of sour cream. A few chives if feeling fancy. My old cantor used to love creamed herring with pickled onions on chunks of challah. If you go the herring route and it's not Holland Herring season, I fully endorse this approach. But don't sleep on the Holland Herring. Get one. Eat it on the bench outside or bring it across the street and eat it standing up in the park. I heard rumor that once upon a time folks would eat them right at the counter. That seems a little messy for my taste, but far be it from me to keep a herring lover from their delightful fishy morsels. read more

They have a cafe at a different location but I heard it gets busy. All I want is food and don't need vibes in the morning. It's a takeout spot. It wasn't busy when I came here. The best part is I was able to place my order online and just go to the pick-up counter making it even quicker and more convenient. They have pickled herring, canned fish, different kinds of salmon, a variety of cream cheese and spreads, smoked fish, roe/ caviar, babka, bagels, olives, latkes, fried fruits, jams, pickled vegetables, cookies, chocolates, candies, etc. And that's what ate up most of my time. I love, love Russ & Daughters. This has easily become one of my favorite bagel spots, and I've been here at least three times this month alone. The classic salmon lox is always amazing, and the Phcall with Norwegian salmon was delightful. The food is honestly what keeps me coming back. The space is small and almost always crowded, so the ambiance is more busy and fast-paced than relaxed. It can be hard to move around inside, and they go through tickets so quickly that it's easy to miss your order if they can't find you. I'm not really complaining because that's part of the rush, but it can feel a little chaotic. My last visit was a bit below par. My ticket got skipped, and while another employee helped me, he seemed rushed and didn't fully understand my order before making it. I had to correct the spread and missed the capers I originally ordered. Regardless, the bagels were still amazing. read more

World class bagels. When the regular bagels are they're toasted they can be a little hard. The gluten-free bagel with vegan cream cheese is stellar. I got it two days on the row and it's I absolutely lovely. They have counter service, no inside seating. You take the ticket and then they usually call you in order based on the screen showing the next number. I didn't have a world class experience though the second day I ordered here. Vanessa took one look at me, made eye contact for about three seconds and then decided that she was gonna take the order from people who arrived after me maybe cause she just liked the look of them better, thereby skipping my number . They weren't even ready to order either which made it especially awkward, and she didn't call any numbers so I would've been an asshole if I jumped in and said "No I was actually here first." After she took their order, I actually checked with them to make sure that they did in fact come after me and had a higher numbers than me. Vanessa, in the future, just call the numbers in order. At work be professional and follow the systems that your employer has put in place because it's not a good customer experience to feel discriminated against. I didn't say anything at the time. I just left a tip and checked with another employee to make sure I knew her name, for the proposes of this review. But, it was INCREDIBLY awkward because two other employees called my number and the number after mine, which were the numbers that belong to me and the people Vanessa helped. I hadn't been back since Covid but I knew it would be one of the few things that never change. Just a half block away this deli serves the best bagels and bagel sandwiches around. Saw lots of people coming into the deli looking for the cafe which I hear is great. So on weekends I would expect you'd have to wait 15-20 minutes for your number to be called. We were 15 numbers away and there were 5 sandwich makers. Just know what you want when your number is called. They aren't Bagel Nazis but he k its like going to McDonalds and asking what kind of burgers they have.
