Some locations have seating, not all, so check before going. Two locations are close to each other, so if you screw up, it's not the end of the world, only a 6 minute walk. The beet borscht was absolutely the way I wanted it. Just beets, beet juice, and sour cream. Simple and outstanding. The bialy was properly done with poppy seeds and onions, light and delicious. Paired with the nova, capers, red onion, and tomato, lightly spread cream cheese, and closed with a chocolate egg cream, I can't imagine a better way to start the day. read more

Russ & Daughters has expanded to include a handful of restaurants around the city, but this is the original fish counter. If you are in the neighborhood, you should pop in and buy something to show your respect. What you should buy is the herring. And specifically, if you happen to be lucky enough to stroll in during Holland Herring season in June/July, that is the herring to get. Even if you just had a giant meat based meal a couple doors down, you can still make room for one herring. Consider it the Jewish equivalent of surf and turf. Although one of my friends said visiting both LES icons was more akin to a "bang bang". Sometimes it's the small shops that make the biggest mark. This is certainly the case with R&D. The place is tiny, but the fish is mighty. I can't speak highly enough about the Holland Herring. So silky. So delicate. So much fun to eat. Held up by the tail, dragged through a mix of chopped onions and pickles, and lowered down into your awaiting mouth. These things are large. They are going to take a few good sized bites. Enjoy the contrast of textures and flavors. Tilting your head back to eat it almost demands that you close your eyes and savor every moment. Yes, the entire herring case is a marvel. While most folks will walk out of R&D with nova (what most people call lox, but is really cold smoked salmon), the real score is the sable and sturgeon. Or, if you are a salt lover, you can get legitimate belly lox here too. It satisfies the soul to see an appetizing store holding the line. Sure, you can put your smoked fish on a bagel or bialy with cream cheese. However, I submit that fish this good should really be enjoyed in its purest form. Maybe if you want to cut the salt, lay some on a thin piece of old world 100% rye bread. Not the squishy deli stuff, but the hard eastern European kind. Perhaps a dolop of sour cream. A few chives if feeling fancy. My old cantor used to love creamed herring with pickled onions on chunks of challah. If you go the herring route and it's not Holland Herring season, I fully endorse this approach. But don't sleep on the Holland Herring. Get one. Eat it on the bench outside or bring it across the street and eat it standing up in the park. I heard rumor that once upon a time folks would eat them right at the counter. That seems a little messy for my taste, but far be it from me to keep a herring lover from their delightful fishy morsels. read more

I got it two days on the row and it's I absolutely lovely. They have counter service, no inside seating. You take the ticket and then they usually call you in order based on the screen showing the next number. I didn't have a world class experience though the second day I ordered here. Vanessa took one look at me, made eye contact for about three seconds and then decided that she was gonna take the order from people who arrived after me maybe cause she just liked the look of them better, thereby skipping my number . They weren't even ready to order either which made it especially awkward, and she didn't call any numbers so I would've been an asshole if I jumped in and said "No I was actually here first." After she took their order, I actually checked with them to make sure that they did in fact come after me and had a higher numbers than me. Vanessa, in the future, just call the numbers in order. At work be professional and follow the systems that your employer has put in place because it's not a good customer experience to feel discriminated against. I didn't say anything at the time. I just left a tip and checked with another employee to make sure I knew her name, for the proposes of this review. But, it was INCREDIBLY awkward because two other employees called my number and the number after mine, which were the numbers that belong to me and the people Vanessa helped. I love, love Russ & Daughters. This has easily become one of my favorite bagel spots, and I've been here at least three times this month alone. The classic salmon lox is always amazing, and the Phcall with Norwegian salmon was delightful. The food is honestly what keeps me coming back. The space is small and almost always crowded, so the ambiance is more busy and fast-paced than relaxed. It can be hard to move around inside, and they go through tickets so quickly that it's easy to miss your order if they can't find you. I'm not really complaining because that's part of the rush, but it can feel a little chaotic. My last visit was a bit below par. My ticket got skipped, and while another employee helped me, he seemed rushed and didn't fully understand my order before making it. I hadn't been back since Covid but I knew it would be one of the few things that never change. Just a half block away this deli serves the best bagels and bagel sandwiches around. Which is a few blocks East on Houston. Russ and Daughters also has a cafe a couple blocks away that requires reservations on weekends. Saw lots of people coming into the deli looking for the cafe which I hear is great. So on weekends I would expect you'd have to wait 15-20 minutes for your number to be called. We were 15 numbers away and there were 5 sandwich makers. Just know what you want when your number is called. They aren't Bagel Nazis but he k its like going to McDonalds and asking what kind of burgers they have.
