Angelina's was right around the corner from where we were staying. And lucky us, that meant we got to enjoy their hot chocolate a few times the week we were there! Can I say??? Its worth having at least JUST once. If you don't like hot chocolate, much less chocolate, then you might want to skip, but otherwise, you must indulge. Hubby and I tried the hot chocolate because our front desk insisted it was divine. Is it? Yes...its like drinking velvety, smooth liquid chocolate. They provide you with a little eggcup of whipped cream. Not whipped cream like the U.S. where its more sweet, but this actually helps to mute the sweetness...a teensy bit.... We had the croque monsieur and omelette mixte. Both were quite yummy and served with a small salad. Because we went on a Monday - which also happened to be a mini holiday, we got in around 1130 with no wait at all. It was full, and so we were sitting in the second part of the dining behind the main dining room. Only negative is that in this second part of the dining room, it was stuffy. They don't have fans or air conditioning. And while the rest of the week was rainy and colder, this particular day was dry and hot. Needless to say, hot chocolate, warm room, and two of us getting over a cold was not a good combination. LOL Still, I ate there one more time for breakfast by myself. We even went to the one in Versailles when we went to visit the palace - though I think the one in the 1st arrondisement was better. We got a few of their pastries too, and the le mont-blanc was really decadent and deadly. I would say worth it at least ONCE. Later I went back to get some macarons which I THOROUGHLY enjoyed... well more like scarfed...and their caramel eclair is delicious too. Best damn coca i have ever had ( sorry mom) . I think my Paris experience would not have been complete if i had not of come here after my visit to the 1st eme. We waited in a pretty short line and were whisked away upstairs to sit and people watched while we waited for our server to come over. The feel is cozy with an old world like charm. Huge mirrors surround tables and the elegant gold chairs set the back drop for a magical experience . I was hungry for more than sweets and decided on the Omeltette Fines Herbes and the Chocolat L'Africain. Standard omelette but of course the hot coca stole the show. It does ring in at almost 8euro but it comes in a pitcher that will fill your mug up twice and a side of freshly whipped cream BON ! I am still thinking about the rich chocolate liquid that was thick enough to coat the back of a spoon but was still very drinkable. I finished my meal with two petit macaroons they were no laduree but they satisfied my sweet tooth none the less. I suggest getting in line after 1 before 3 or it will feel like forever. If you are not interested in sitting at a table you can get your beverages and sweet treats to go. The small shop directly next door shows all the confections and sells cocoa powder mix, jams, macaroons and sweet treats for take away. THE WORLD'S BEST HOT CHOCOLATE. Angelina's will be always be crowded (due to its famous hot chocolate) but I strongly recommend coming here atleast once so you can have what will undoubtedly be the best hot chocolate of your life. It's rich, decadent, chocolatey and you'll love every last sip. The restaurant is very elegant and beautifully appointed in a Louis XV style decor, which makes your experience even more surreal. The location is right across from the Jardin de Tulieres and a few minutes from the Louvre so it's perfect, sweet ending to a day (or even just a morning or afternoon) of art-viewing. The service was polite and impeccable but felt a little forced in the pleasantries, probably due to the unceasing masses of people they get each day. I tried the L'africaine which was rich dark chocolately (but somehow without the bitterness that comes with dark chocolate) and served in its own little pot. It was accompanied with a little pitcher of sweet creme fraiche and a little teacup for me to pour and adjust the drink to my own taste. It's a little expensive (€10) for one hot chocolate but the amazing quality and the amount (despite completely loving my drink I couldn't finish it) you get makes it worth the price-tag. I also loved the nutty confection Mont Blanc (a meringue filled pastry with a chestnut vermicelli dome) that my friend ordered but it was a little too sweet and decadent for me, especially after my hot chocolate! I left Angelina's with two tins of their signature hot chocolate and have tried to recreate their amazing drink many times. While their hot chocolate mix (comes as little chocolate shavings not in a powder form) makes darn great hot chocolate, it doesn't come close to the fantabulous, practically mythical hot chocolate I had in person at Angelina's in Paris. read more

I was warned by fellow yelpers about this location but still couldn't resist coming here for the experience.. Well let's just say it wasn't much of an experience. We arrived around dinner time to find a line 20 minutes long, which wasn't that bad, we moved quickly to the front and were sat in no time. The problem began after we sat though.. Our waitress was very efficient but has the saddest face I've seen on anyone since arriving in Paris. She did not crack a smile at all and spoke in a very demanding authoritarian way. I get it- we were another table of tourist on a Friday night looking to check the place off our list- and your probably overworked and looking forward to go home already. But if I'm making an effort smiling at you and being polite, couldn't you at least do the same, especially when I'm the one paying? Anywho.. I give her props for being efficient and wasting no time in the service. She just sorta ruined the whole experience and my appetite in appreciating whatever it was I drank for 8 euro. The 5 stars is for the hot chocolate ALONE, I didn't really care for the dessert but to be frank I forgot what those taste like because I only remembered the hot chocolate. And trust me for someone to order it on a blistering hot day where it was 90 degrees and still think it's the best hot chocolate ever, it is the best hot chocolate ever. I've never tasted any other hot chocolate that can compare to this one, it's thick, decadent and the chocolate flavor oozes from every single sip you take. It is sweet but not too sweet, bitter but not overwhelming, chocolaty but keeps you wanting more. The Mont Blanc was not what I expected at all, and I mean that in the best way possible! So, so creamy - I can barely even think of a word to use to describe it! I had never had chestnut cream (the filling), which admittedly wasn't my favorite, but wasn't bad either especially with a good chunk of the sugary outside with the cream! I was told to try the hot chocolate here! After spending a day at the Louvre, I stopped by for a quick afternoon snack and hot chocolate. Best. Hot. Chocolate. Everrrrrrrr. I am happily strolling down a street one day in Paris and I see these delicious looking desserts in a window and I am like Holy Moly, I want some of those macarons haha, and then I turn my head back to the sidewalk and see this line that goes longer and longer and longer. Forget it I tell myself and deicde to move on. A couple of days later on my last day in Paris which also happened to be Christmas day I decided to see if the place is open or not and head there with a couple of other girls to see the same ridicolous line in front of the store. This time I decide to wait in line, but it turns out that the line is only for those who want to be seated. If you're willing to take something to go then you can just order and leave. So, I got myself a couple macarons, a caramel and a hot choco and they were delicious. However, I literary couldn't even finish a quarter of my hot coco. It's sooo sooo soooo heavy; it's like you're drinking melted choco I swear. Definitely worth trying but I suggest you share it with a couple people. Enjoy! read more

Come here after a long day at the Louvre to enjoy the hot chocolate and a croque monsieur. Hands down, the BEST hot chocolate I've ever had. It's like they melted pure chocolate and put it into a warm pot for you to pour. It's the most rich, decadent thing you've ever tasted. Then, to top it off, add real whipping cream. The pastries looked incredible, but there's only so many different foods you can try in one sitting! You'll definitely break your diet for the day, but it's to die for! read more

First, be aware that there are several Angelina Bakery locations in France. This particular location is the original. The interior is elegant and beautiful. A great place to take a break and enjoy a sweet treat. The first thing you'll notice upon entering Angelinas is their assortment of GORGEOUS baked goods. They are truly beautiful. Even more impressive is the fact that they are as delicious as they are beautiful. Many bakeries can make a great looking product that doesn't taste all that great, this is NOT the case at Angelinas. If it says it's raspberry flavored or mango flavored etc, it delivers. I will say the pastries don't come cheap at 8-10 euros each but it's well worth the splurge. Of course no visit to Angelinas would be complete without trying their famous hot chocolate. It's extremely rich and velvety smooth. A true delight, especially on a rainy damp day. Don't forget to buy some of thier hot chocolate powder to take home too, your friends will love you for doing so ;) read more

So I know this has now become a bit of a touristy place but I really do think if it's your first time in Paris it's a must go to. The history of the restaurant along w/ the amazing pastries and hot chocolate make it a fun place to visit. I went back w/ my parents and enjoyed a breakfast of croissants, hot chocolate, coffee and orange juice. Perfect way to start off a day of sightseeing! Can't make a trip to Paris without trying Angelina's famous hot chocolate! It's completely filled with tourists- for good reason. We went for breakfast and thé viennoiseries and omelettes we're good, but you can find better elsewhere. Come for the hot chocolate and beautiful pastries! It's more of liquid creamy chocolate than hot milk chocolate. I usually have to split mine because it's so rich- but I've gone back since for their to go cup! 2 stars based on service deficiencies. Place decor is very impressive but service subpar. We arrived at 530pm and we were seated at 545pm and the menu mentions certain pages at the dishes served until 6pm and others until 630pm. So, we were rushed to order by the waitress!!! Very welcoming!!!!If you limit ordering by 6pm just close your doors at that time. Just keep the outer desert boutique open. Apparently restaurant officially closes by 7pm. I think it is better than having rushed customers with waiters who cannot describe dishes except in French. Next, got bread basket complimentary but other 2 tables around us getting bread with butter too!! New had to ask for butter but should I have to ask for that??? Next.... other 2 tables next to us offered tap water but we were offered bottled or sparkle only. I do not mind paying for bottled water if that is restaurant policy. Once again, waiter who can only describe dishes in French!!! I ended up with what I that was salmon sandwich with egg salad and fries being side items but actually with egg salad sandwich that has few thin layers of smoked salmon and a side of fries. We really wanted to see what is the 4 star for per other reviewers so we guessed it is for dessert. 2 stars are just for the hot chocolate that was the best hot chocolate that I ever had. The desserts was the lemon tart..good, the chocolate ball filled with raspberry filling was ok as the outer chocolate layer little chalky. We also had strawberry tart was good. But based on poor inconsistent service we will not return. Even the desserts are not exceptional. If you can just take the hot chocolate to go, take it and run!!! read more

My daughter and I saw some hot chocolate signs on the street and left our flat we were renting to go find some one afternoon. We had no idea we were looking for Angelina's but we found it by chance. The line to get in signaled to us that it was worth the wait. I'm not even a hot chocolate fan per se, but I wanted to indulge my daughter. We ordered one hot chocolate for us to share and a croissant. It was plenty for our little treat and it floored us both. So good. If you are a first timer to Paris, this is truly a must do and see. The restaurant has other things too that all looked amazing, but get the hot chocolate. You won't be disappointed. Incredibly rich but not too sweet. One was plenty btw. We dipped our croissant and we were in heaven. The restaurant is huge and seats people quickly and serves quickly (especially for France). It is also beautiful. MICE on second floor. As certified foodies, a trip to Angelina is usually a must during our visits to Paris. We come for the delicious hot chocolate "l'Africain" and the good pastries although other establishments do offer more interesting options with the later. The Belle Epoque setting usually makes up for any shortcomings. Seeing the above, imagine our horror when during our last trip to Angelina (18/08/2013), we saw a MOUSE run - and stop to grab leftover crumbs - in the middle of the second floor dining room where we were seated. We are reasonable folk, and Paris is ubiquitous for its rodent problem, but we have been to dozens of bistrots/neo-bistros/cafes in all parts of Paris and we have NEVER seen actual MICE running across dining room floors. This is even more unacceptable at an establishment that is openly advertising a certain standard of quality (and the prices that go with it). After the incident, we could not touch our pastry or chocolate. If we actually saw mice running around in the dining room, what was happening in the kitchen? We brought the issue to the attention of the wait staff - we speak fluent French - and were told matter-of-factly in these exact terms: "yes, yes, we are well aware there are rodents, we do the best we can, and you're in Paris after all" followed by a "how do you plan on paying your bill?". NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY! Incredulous, we asked to speak to the floor manager and received a similar "we know, we are doing the best we can". Only after insisting that perhaps they owed us a gesture of good-will since we were not able to touch our food, did the manager suggest waiving our bill. Regretfully, this will be our last visit to this establishment. The questionable hygiene and grossly inadequate service make us shake our heads at was used to be a true Parisian institution. We suggest visitors think twice before stepping into this once venerable institution, we would hate to see your trip ruined by a similar incident. read more

The macaroons were satisfactory but nowhere near as good as the Pierre Hermes just a few blocks away. Having read the other reviews, Angelina is a destination cafe where there are no short cuts (either stay & wait or don't bother at all).
