The line is always out the door and I heard it's pretty expensive. The Mont Blancs are worth the trip though. This place was absolutely worth the 30 minute line we waited in. Such a charming old style tea room and the white chocolate chaud was fabulous as was the famous Mont Blanc. I went here for lunch with my mother when we were visiting Paris. The line was long, but don't let it scare you because they manage it very well and it moves quickly. The inside of Angelina's is beautiful, but the temperature was a bit stuffy and hot (granted this is Paris is June). My mom had the Croque Madame (good but too much bread), and I had an omelette, which was great! Then came dessert - the reason why we made the journey to the Salon! We shared the hot chocolate and the Mont Blanc. The hot chocolate is truly praiseworthy - good temperature, great flavor, nice and smooth, not too thick or too thin, and very chocolatey! The cream on the side was a nice touch as well. Then comes the Mont Blanc. Frankly, it was awful. One of the worst desserts I've ever had to be quite honest. In the display case it looks fabulous, but when we got it, the hazelnut vermicelli was one big mass that was so dense you couldn't get your spoon through it to pick up a bite, let alone eat it! We could peel off the vermicelli to get to the meringue center (which was tasty), but you shouldn't have to do that in order to enjoy a restaurant's signature dessert! It also was presented in the same paper cup that is used for its presentation in the display case. This is normally not a problem with me, but it clued me in on the problem with their dessert: mass-production. Dozens of locations, hundreds of customers daily, leads to high quantity output with (in this case) very low quality. The Mont Blanc we were served had probably been refrigerated for at least 2 days. *I was hoping that the problem with the Mont Blanc was isolated to the time that I visited, but I took a cooking class the following day and was speaking to a woman who had gone to Angelina's the week prior and had the same problem with the Mont Blanc. Absolutely delicious! Doesn't get any better than this. If you're staying at the Westin-Vendome, check it out. We stopped in for brunch on the morning of my 35th birthday and had a DELICIOUS meal. I had the quiche lorraine and a cafe creme. This was probably the best meal we had in Paris. Highly recommend. There can be long lines there at times, because it is near The Louvre (and many other tourist attractions), but we went on a Tuesday around 1pm without a reservation, and walked right in. Unparalleled hot chocolate. I don't even think you can call it that. It is in a different category. A new name must be made to describe this wondrous viscous liquid of delight served up at Angelina. If you have never been, or if you are going to Paris, you MUST stop here. Besides the hot chocolate it is an absolutely gorgeous building and makes you feel fancy and dainty and oh-so-Parisienne. And surprisingly, not totally swarming with tourists - I would dare to say some actual Parisians were in there - though probably depends on the time of year. You must go to Angelina for hot chocolate! Go to the one on rue de Rivoli, near the Louvre. If you look on the website you will see that they have one at Versailles and one in the Louvre, but they are small. Go to the one on rue de Rivoli; it is beautiful. The food is expensive, but good; the croque monsieur comes highly recommended and my husband loved it. You can also just order a hot chocolate and pastry. read more

After walking across Pont des Arts (which was lovely, by the way) to the Louvre and walking across the Tuileries, we found ourselves coming into Angelina for Chocolat L'Africain - the best hot chocolate I've ever tasted! A very nice cafe. It is well known. While serving meals, they are most known for their hot chocolate and pastries. We did try the hot chocolate (like drinking a melted milk chocolate bar) and cafe creme along with their signature Mont Blanc pastry and a chocolate eclair. Very very good. The service was prompt and courteous. The cafe retains a classy atmosphere even though most of the visitors are probably tourists. Prices are OK for Paris. I went there to try their hot chocolate and I have to say that it was much better than I expected (and I had high expectations). I was installed as soon as I arrived and my order was taken quickly. We ate brunch and enjoyed the rich chocolate and patisseries, but when we stopped at the front store to get a package of cocoa to take home the horrible experience began. If you have a sweet tooth you simply must go here, if only to get a cup of "L'Africaine," their world-famous hot chocolate. It will likely be the richest and most decadent cup of hot chocolate you'll ever taste. We stopped in to the salon for breakfast in the late morning and were seated without any wait. If I recall correctly, the "Parisian breakfast" (20 Euros) came with a hot drink (coffee or hot chocolate), a plate of breakfast pastries and maybe orange juice (?). Anyway, it was a little bit pricey for breakfast but well worth it for the experience. Everything was delicious and the space was gorgeous.
