As someone born and raised in Louisiana, I know a good po'boy when I see one. It's practically in my DNA. So when I decided to give Angelo Z's a try, I came in hopeful but ready to judge with the precision of a seasoned shrimp connoisseur. Friendly smiles, fast service -- the kind of welcome that makes you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile. But then my shrimp po'boy arrived. And that's where things took a turn. The bread was toasted -- yes, toasted -- which, for a Louisiana po'boy, is already a red flag. To make matters worse, it wasn't even the traditional French bread that's light, airy inside, and has that delicate crackle on the crust. Instead, it was a dense, over-toasted loaf that crunched like I was chewing on a roofing shingle. Then came the real deal-breaker: I bit in and realized the shrimp hadn't been deveined. At all. And for anyone who knows seafood, that black line running down the back isn't some "seasoning" -- it's grit and waste. One glance at that and my appetite clocked out. I had a good experience at Angelo'z today. This is a cute sandwich shop which also has a mini market inside where you can buy spices ands things from around the world. They have multiple hot and cold sandwiches to choose from all of which look good. I ordered the hot Cuban po boy which was quite tasty. Enjoyed the first quarter, second quarter it became too much. The Super Po'Boy is pretty aggressively basic for what it is, and the name entails. Especially for $8. It reminds me of a Jimmy John's Slim. Definitely not "super". The relish is aggressively sweet and overpowered the entire sandwich. I LOVE sandwiches and honestly, couldn't finish either one. They offer a lunch card& after 9 visits the 10th is free, on the 10th visit I present my car& request the full muffaletta. I come here for the Hot sandwiches& always get the muffaletta, after telling me this she did give me the smaller muffaletta. About $12 for a whole, could feed 2 people or 1 very hungry person (like myself) Popped into Angelo'z for lunch post finals and couldn't decide between either a supreme or muffuletta-- well having never had a muffuletta before and dreaming of travel and a New Orleans experience, I went with that. The muffuletta was made to order and took less than 5 minutes. It was served warm and was SO GOOD! Layers of meaty, salty goodness accented by the brininess of the pickles and olives. I easily finished half the sandwich for lunch and will likely have the other half for dinner haha. Their whole muffuletta is the priciest sandwich on the menu, but could probably reasonably feed 2. Angelo'z also offers rotating daily sandwich combos-- order the sandwich of the day and get chips and a drink for $10. Chip selection includes Lay's, Zapp's, and Kettle. If you're in a rush, many of their popular sandwiches it seems, are available to be grabbed from the case. So, I just but into my full Mufalatta and I'm in shock. I've been driving around and trying all of these restaurants, and totally missed this small sandwich shop! The service couldn't be better. I loved the family feel and how open the staff was. I love the decor. Next time I'm here (tomorrow), I'll post pictures. The mufalatta is so flavorful. Nothing is over powered, it's balanced, and it actually looks as visually appealing as the picture. I'm looking forward to trying the next sandwich on the menu tomorrow. I don't see why this place has such high ratings. I understand that the restaurant has a very causal feel with very unique and cool decor. In addition, the people there seem very friendly and nice. However, I really don't plan on going back again. I came in and got their poboy lunch special. It included the poboy of the day (tuna on Fridays) with a bag of chips and a drink, all for $9. Now, ordinarily I would deem this to be a decent deal if the poboy was better than the average sandwich and large. However, unfortunately the sandwich was very poor and just a little bigger than a subway 6 inch sandwich. When I opened my sandwich, I saw that all was on it was some tuna spread, some pickles and some cheese. By no means was this sandwich impressive at all or warranted the price point they were selling it at. Even moreso, their disappointment of a sandwich does not warrant their name "World's Best Poboys". I would recommend going down the street and getting a subway sandwich instead, or making your own sandwich at home, both of which could be much tastier and cheaper than what you'd get here. Of recent, this place came highly recommended by a number of people that know precisely what the 411 is on sandwiches right meow. They did not mislead me. This was an amazing sandwich-lunch experience. It is at the edge of the strip mall next to Freebirds. It is deceptively close to St. God's hospital in the Med Centre proper. They even have a drive-thru! But they also have tables for a sit down adventure if you have a dining companion that is not your Dark Passenger. It has a homey atmosphere, like a family-run Jewish deli back home. They have daily specials. Prepared sandwiches and potato salads among other things in the display towards the back near the soft drink refrigerators. But if you want something hot like the Cuban Po-Boy then they assemble it after you order. You go pay and sit down and your food gets brought out to you. Nice. It just has that feel like it is a nice place that you matter as a customer, it doesn't feel like it belongs inside the loop - this feels like a place you would find driving between Dallas and Houston. The Cuban po-boy obviously stood out on the menu for a number of reasons. My second family is Cuban. My favorite Hot Pocket flavor is the Cuban one. Meow listen here, the Cubans are rich in culture, spirit, and warmth. When it is politically appropriate to travel there as a private citizen that is the one place in the world I am jonesing to go, even more than Israel and Japan. Senpai and Schlimzael will have mega naches landing in Havana and doing best friend things of questionable legality under current Cuban law. The sandwich itself comes out hot like a boss. The cheese is melty and delicious. The pickles slowly cool everything down as the mustard simmers on the warm cheese and meat, tantalizingly soaking the sandwich in its juices of love. Instead of Borat's sexy time explosion this was just a culinary explosion enough to make you solemnly look over your shoulder before whispering "Cuba Libre" without a drink in your hand just like you were in a deliciously smoke filled bar in Miami in the way back machine. Today I had the chance to visit Angelo'Z through a recommendation of a friend. I decided to bring a friend to try the place out. Conveniently it is a spot that I'm familiar, the Medical Center area. When I first stepped into the business, it gave me this feel of an old school deli and store which gave me this local feel. Having daily sandwich specials, cold/hot cut sandwiches, the shelves of groceries, and the drinks/chips selections. I ordered the Thursday sandwich special, Supreme Po-Boy, which includes chips and a can or fountain drink. I enjoyed the sandwich. The cold cuts of ham and salami really went well with the provolone and the chow chow which is a kind of pickled slaw but don't quote me on that. Overall I had a good experience visiting Angelo'Z. I think similarly I had a sandwich similar to this at Paulie's Po-Boys on Westhimer. The staff were very nice and helpful. The business is pretty straightforward a casual dining spot like a neighborhood sandwich spot. No fancy waiters or anything like that haha. But a great experience overall read more

I drive past this place all the time and see their sandwiches at Kroger but finally stopped in today for dinner. I am a huge sucker for a good deli and wanted to see if Antone's would make the cut. Btw, their hours aren't posted here but they close by 7pm everyday except Saturdays when they close by 5pm. I came in and was immediately greeted by the owner, who was very friendly and helpful. I asked him about the different sandwiches/sides people like and he recommended the Cuban PoBoy (one of their hot sandwiches) but I had read about the super poboy and wanted to try that. All sandwiches can be made fresh, and you can also request veggies (sprouts, onions, tomato, lettuce) on your sandwich (these normally don't come on the pre-made ones). The sandwich itself was $5.95 (probably 8-10 inches long?) but a combo with chips/drink was $1 more, not bad. While my sandwich was being made, I browsed the rest of the store. There's lots of tables around the shop and shelves of canned/dried Greek and Italian goods to check out. In the front there's displays of pre-made sides/items to go. There were large salads (tuna, greek, chef), tabouli, deviled eggs, desserts (cheesecake!), hummus, pasta salad, and more all for really reasonable prices. I'd definitely come here to pick up a few pre-made sides if I'm having a busy week so I can throw them into packed lunches or add them to sandwiches/salads. My sandwich was delicious and filling. It wasn't the traditional Louisiana po'boy I think of (ie: fried shrimp or roast beef) and seemed more Italian to me than anything, but it was still very tasty. The white sub bread was chewy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and came packed with salami, ham, turkey?, provolone, veggies, mayo, and their special 'chow chow.' Chow chow is Antone's special sandwich ingredient: pickled, vinegary cabbage with a slight sweetness and crunch. The tabouli was also quite good, lots of parsley and tomatoes with a pungent garlicky flavor. The cashier was also quite friendly and told me about the history of Antone's as she checked me out. So great to know that they're a family-owned Houston establishment going strong for over 50 years now! I'll definitely stop by again to sample a hot sandwich (the meatball or Cuban po'boy!) as well as more of their sides. read more

Love me some Antones!!!! Apparently this place has been around for decades and I can see why. I am hooked on their whole Muffalettas ($10), one of the best I have been able to find in Houston so far. You have the option of either ordering it served Hot or Cold and prepared either as a whole sliced muff or in a Po Boy style. Super cute 1/2 restaurant, 1/2 quasi market that serves an array of sandwiches from Gyros, Italian subs, Po Boys, Cubans and many more. And I must say that their chip game is on point!! They offer both "Dirty" and "Zapps" which are two of my fav chip brands. Not interested in any chips you say?? Then I recommend you try their yummy potato salad. Also have deviled eggs, tabbouleh and pasta salad too. And it you have a sweet tooth, they got you covered also. Don't forget to check out the many dessert offerings either in the cooler or up by the counter. If you are in a hurry, they do pre-make some of their sandwich and keep them in their cooler so you can "grab and go" or utilize the drive thru lane on the right side of the restaurant as well. read more

I have been looking for Antone's for about 4 months but thanks to YELP I have discovered that the name has been changed but it's still the same GREAT place which is super close to my house... Came here for dinner tonight with my wife and our meal was OK but not great. First, the ambiance inside is half convenience store half deli. I have no issue with this as long as the food is tasty, but neither of us particularly enjoyed our sandwiches. I got the regular while my wife got the turkey, and the sandwiches were just a bit bland. The bread tasted a bit old and my ham tasted sort of like bologna - not my favorite. Granted, we were eating there near closing time, so that probably impacted the flavor and freshness of everything. The staff were OK but not terribly friendly. No one said hi when we entered or bye as we left. Not a huge deal, but it didn't make us feel terribly welcome. I ask her about it and she told me no it's 2.65 I gave it back to her that's ok. Every body knows Arizona tea are .99 cent anywhere you go not two dollars and it's said .99 cent on the can. My Aunt had a taste for Antoine's, which use to occupy the suite for years. When driving and trying to maneauver your way to the area, you may see the A and think this is Antoine's, but it is not. She went in and inquired about the name change before we all piled out the car. Supposedly, its the same place just a name change, but there are other Antione's in the city...I digress on that point. According to my Aunt the taste of her sandwich was reminiscent of Antione's which was the Smoked Turkey with smoked cheese and sweet pickles. I decided to get the steak and cheese which was okay, but Ive had better. I really wish I had purchased the Mulfaletta! Thick with meat, cheese and olives it looked on the plate and my Mom raved about it! With our sandwiches we added the $2.99 combo option which is includes a fountain drink and chips. Be aware that only the Lays and Zapps are included in the combo deal purchase. With sandwiches ranging from $7 to $10 you can easily spend $10 in this place, especially if your sweet tooth is easily tempted. All around the counter all kinds of candy bars, deserts, and candy will catch your eye. I jusy jad to get a cookie, which cost 1.50. It was fresh, but I really didnt need a 1.50 cookie after half finishing my meal because the portions are pretty good. Swung by for lunch after reading lots of great reviews, and am so glad that I did. This is an order at the counter place with some tables and counter seating if you want to eat in. Order, get your food, and pay the cashier at the end. I got the roast beef but would probably try something else next time. I guess I expected the sandwich to be hot. But we got a full muffaletta and it was delicious! They're huge, so come with an appetite. There's also a good variety of chips and teas, but their combo looks to be a really good deal.
