Wow this place surprised me. I really wasn't expecting much. But I shared a muffuletta with my wife. This sandwich is really good. The toasted sesame seeds on the bread was the topping in the cake. The sandwich was served slightly warm so the cheese was melted just right. The olive salad on top was perfectly proportional to the meat and cheese. Personally I like a lot more of olive salad on mine but that's just my preference. My daughter had the regular po boy. She thoroughly enjoyed the authenticity of the Italian flavors. She has never had chow chow on a sandwich and she was very impressed on the flavor. She said we have to come back and try more sandwiches. My son had a shrimp po boy. He was less than impressed with his sandwich. He said the shrimp was too doughy. He prefers his shrimp light and crispy on the batter. But he had some of his sisters po boy and really enjoyed it. If you read my other posts you can read that we have eaten all over NOLA. Some of the best po boy places. So I would give this place a try. My family has found a new place to eat for sure. I love the sandwiches here! They're similar to Antones but better I think. Made with more love here, I think xD My favorites are the smoked turkey and the corned beef! The smoked turkey has this smoked Gouda that really ties the sandwich together. The flavor of the corned beef is surprisingly good. The sauerkraut really topped it off. The regular is also really solid. The chow chow really makes the flavor of this one. I haven't gotten to try the hot sandwiches yet but I'm making my way around all the cold ones first. I'm a huge fan of Antone's. I remember when I was a kid my grandmama used to take me there to get poboys. Today I ordered a gyro sandwich. It was actually good. Prior times I've gone I've always just ordered the Super. I like getting it from the actual Antone's shop vs. the grocery store. For some reason the grocery stores don't taste the same. I've always seen Antone's pervasive po'boys in grocery store deli cases since I was a kid, but never knew all of them were coming from. When I discovered their origin, I had to see for myself what made them so popular. Part of me was expecting a magical meat and cheese wonderland, but the other part knew such a thing could only exist in heaven (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong and I will be eternally grateful). It was not as I hoped, yet still a departure from the typical Subway assembly line model we've become accustomed to. All of the jarred goods lining the shelves and a vaguely old-world feel really make the place seem like an "import company." The woman at the register sometimes creepily hovers around me, telling me the life story of any item I make a slight motion toward. The only useful knowledge she imparted was that even though there are many prepared items in the deli case, any of them can be freshly made. Want the sesame dressing instead of ranch with your salad? Done. Don't likemayo? Gone. The ladies at the deli counter are always happy to oblige your requests with warm smiles. You can't go wrong with the super po'boy with their signature chow chow (cabbage relish). The real star, however, is the Cuban po'boy. It's the perfect marriage of ham, pulled pork, Swiss, pickles and mustard hot off the panini press. Simple yet effective. I was in town for work and one of my coworkers recommended this place. When I pulled up, I did not know what to expect. I am sure glad I did not drive away. The Cuban Po-Boy was phenomenal. I also ordered deviled eggs and potato salad. The deviled eggs were bland; I was not a fan. The potato salad was excellent; if I go back, I will be sure to order a larger container. The staff were very nice and did not take long at all to make my sandwich. Next time I am in town for work I will look forward to coming back here. I feel the sandwich just squeaked by with 4/5 stars. The price came to $5.14 with tax for their original sandwich, which in this day and age is a decent price for a sandwich. However, the sandwich was fairly pedestrian and the bread was a bit rubbery. I half-jokingly told myself that I felt like a dog playing with a squeaky toy, but it really wasn't THAT rubbery. On the plus side, the staff was outgoing and polite. The sandwich itself tasted fairly good (bread not withstanding) and overall was a decent buy for the price. I know other poboy places may charge $9+ for a poboy, but even so, I don't think I'd order the regular poboy again. I'd most likely try the Cuban, since I figure it would have more taste and flavor. I came here with a friend because I was craving a muffaletta. If I had to pick a dream city to live in, it would be NOLA, but since I can't figure out how to make my move over there, my usual go-to for muffalettas is the famous Maceo's in Galveston. However, recently, I decided to explore local options, figuring that Houston should have a decent substitute, given its huge LA transplant population. After some Yelp investigation, it seemed there were only three places that had decently reviewed muffalettas. However, this was the most authentic seeming, without the weird additions of lettuce and other extraneous objects (?!). Upon entering, there were maybe two other people dining in on late Wednesday afternoon. The lady at the counter where you order was quick to warn us that ordering two full muffalettas was silly, cuz they're huge. Even when we steadfastly ordered two full sandwiches, she seemed skeptical. "I have a family!!!" my friend was quick to proclaim, having been made to feel slightly uncomfortable. But, um, I feel like my girth and overall extreme confidence should have told something to that lady. I finished that whole thing and could have probably polished off another half. Not a terrible value for $10, tho. One awkward thing that happened was that we ordered but were not instructed as to when or where to pay. Finally, I decided it would be hella weird to be given our food and not have paid yet, and suggested we go to something that looked vaguely like a cashier area. The lady there had a Bluetooth set in, which REALLY pissed me off. Lemme just say, I've done a lot of customer service in my day and have definitely goofed off on the job, but I would always pause what I'm doing to take care of the customer. This lady conducted her ENTIRE conversation (in Spanish, which she didn't think that me or my ambiguous looking but entirely Mexican friend spoke) in front of us, performing her function mechanically while she made plans for after work. I do believe that customer service is a vital part of a business, and am deducting a further star due to this. Going back to the food, overall, I think it was an okay substitute for the muffalettas I've been dreaming of, but I would gladly make the trip over to Galveston and devour their muffaletta in the sanctity of my car like I did the last time (ahem, sorry, I thought this was the space for honesty). I am SO GLAD, however, that it was served warm; tho I know that's not quite authentic, I do think it makes all the flavors blend together nicely. I think people who don't adore olive salad or salt as much as I do will enjoy this more than the traditional muffaletta; I definitely could have gone for a heavier spread. Overall, I was not disappointed, just slightly underwhelmed. I will try the other two Houston options I found, which, while less traditional, seem worth tasting based on reviews alone. I ordered the shrimp po boy and left the store to grab my wallet from the car. I came back to see my order finished. I ate part of it and the fried shrimp was cold.. I told the cook and he gave me an excuse that it was the lettuce and tomato that made it cold. He said he'd remake it for me, making it sound like he'd batter and fry the shrimp, but I seen him pull it out of the microwave.. I tried it again and it was still bad. The shrimp was chewy like you can tell it was microwaved. At least it was hot tho. Not even a slightly good po boy for "world's best". Don't waste your money on the shrimp po boy. Delicious sandwiches! Both times, the service is quick and friendly and the food is consistently great. My favorite is the Cubano as well as the Philly cheese steak. I've dined in as well as ordered to go. Dining in is fun because there's a lot to browse through and look at. You only have to call ahead 5-10 min in advance to pick up your sandwiches. I paid less than $15 for two, and it was well worth it! By the way, heard they are changing the name of Antone's (everything else will stay the same) towards the end of March! read more

I love Angelo'z. It's got that old-world deli smell to it. Freshly made sandwiches, that are a bit better than Antone's. I know the history of the dueling families and am glad to see they are both able to carry on business. Angelo'z is one of those places where I enjoy grabbing a PO boy, chips, and drink and sitting in their little dining room absorbing the ambiance and smell. It's hard to find if you don't know where it is. Hidden in a little strip center off Kirby south of Main, before you get to the NRG Sports complex. I would give this a 4 1/2 star, if possible. I think these poboys are about as good as they can be, but the restaurant ambience does not lend itself to 5 star ranking. It has more of a lunch counter air.This one is in a strip shopping center. There used to be many locations when I lived in Houston. Now, it looks like there are just two. But boy, the bread you can get nowhere else; the chow-chow is a culinary masterpiece. They are super-good sandwiches. I have had Cubanos and Philly's, but the Antone's original is an oeuvre d'art. By the way, they have Cubanos and Philly's now too due to the popularity, but the original, or super if you want more meat, are the down level best poboys on the market. read more
