I have already failed one person with my inadequate review of this place, so I am under a lot of pressure to make this one complete and accurate. I need you to like this place. Note: Antone's serves po'boys. Not sub sandwiches. Po'boys so delicious you get tingles down your spine after the first bite. But no, they are nothing like the crap you get at Quiznos. You see, I took my boyfriend to Antone's during a Houston visit this summer. I had been singing the praises of their po'boys for years, and now finally - finally! - he got to try one. The problem is, when he asked what a po'boy was, I described it as "kind of like a sub sandwich." DO NOT MAKE THE SAME ERROR. When we finally arrived at Antone's, I bounced in the door, ready to share the unparalleled joy of a delicious treat with the one I loved. I ordered us both super originals, tossed him his, and waited expectantly as he tore off the white wrapper. This was better than Christmas morning! That was when the griping started. "This isn't a very good sub sandwich" he muttered. "There's not that much stuff on it." NOT VERY GOOD?!! WTF, man? What more "stuff" could you want besides that perky, flamboyantly orange chow chow relish, just resting pretty on that french bread and jiving with the sharp flavors of the swiss/provolone cheeses and the smooth complements of the ham, salami, and turkey? This is manna we're talking about here. You want to put some freaking lettuce on MANNA? Blasphemy. As I cried hot, salty tears into my Dr. Brown's Root Beer, I almost had to call it quits then and there. My point is this: go to Antone's if you want the best po'boy you've ever had. I agree with Marissa S: the pre-made ones are somehow much tastier than the fresh. However, don't compare this delicacy to a sub sandwich. A po'boy is a completely different animal, and must be judged by different standards. Though I really don't understand what kind of freak alien would prefer a boring and bland sub sandwich to the mouth-tingling orgasmic pleasure of an Antone's original po'boy. I once came across a kiosk selling Antone's in the Houston airport and almost lost it then and there. I bought three to take back to college. Now, tell me seriously: do you think Subway ever inspired that kind of reaction? read more

I'm from Houston, so I remember when this was truly one of the original Antone's. I used to always go to the one near my parents' house on Voss Road, but it's long gone. I've now lived in Austin about half my life, but I'm still in H-town fairly often. When I'm there, I almost always make it a point to pick up a po-boy. I've never had a po-boy better than Antone's. Muffaletta sandwiches and Subs just aren't the same. I'm one of the few people who's not a big fan of the chow-chow (orange relish), but besides that, the super original is about as close to perfect as a sandwich gets for me. They also have excellent Mediterranean delicacies like Tabouli, Stuffed grape leaves and Baklava. Antone's tried to make a go of it in Austin between 5-10 years ago. When they opened on Congress (downtown), the line was out the door. James Coney Island opened at the same time. I was in HEAVEN! I don't miss H-town too much, but I sure miss both these places. Unfortunately, neither stayed open for very long, so I have to get my fix for both when I'm back in H-town. ANTONE'S RULES!! I tried their falafel hot sandwich and it was really good. The falafel itself was not too dry or too soft and mixed well with pickles and lettuce. The pita itself was hot pressed and crispy soft. The portion is perfect for a regular lunch meal. They also have hummus and other dips which can be enjoyed with variety of chips. The staff is polite and the service was fast. The group of people at lunch time are from the medical center area so it gets busy and noisy but there is plenty of space for people to sit and enjoy a quick lunch meal. I will try their cold sandwiches on my next visit. read more

Need a break from eating heavy at all of the Houston restaurants I've reviewed? Antone's is the place to go. Everything is so fresh and flavorful. My favorite: the Greek salad, the turkey sandwich and the tabulah salad. Random fact: ever since I was a little girl I've always been impressed with their drink selection. They've got all of the Dr. Browns drinks, and just a whole wall of cool tasty beverages. Plus the people who work here are so nice! I decided to try this place out given the number of reviews and that everyone is so positive about it. I went with the hot cuban po-boy since it's one of their more popular items and looks pretty good from the Yelp pictures. And you know what... it is pretty good. But it's not amazing. I enjoyed it, but it didn't blow my socks off. It's about $7.50 and doesn't come with anything... not even a pickle. So while it's tasty, it wasn't that filling. I probably won't rush back here, but it's not a bad option if you are in the area. read more

This location was my first Antone's I ever visited; well, actually, it was when they were across the street on the parking lot where they shared it with a Fiesta, Office Depot, and other stores. Anyway, I've been patronizing them off-and-on since then. As for the food, it's very simple and sometimes I just want that kind of sandwich. I usually go for the smoked turkey with cheese. If they don't have it already-made, the staff will make it for you. The bread is fresh-tasting and has enough crunch in it even when there is more "fixings" (e. g., lettuce, tomatoes, etc.) to be added. The staff is always courteous and helpful. I've never had a bad experience with both food and staff. One of my go-to places for a quick meal. read more

First impressions, a rustic Italian looking deli. Ordered the hot Cuban poboy which was $7. Looked good but a bit small for the prize. Didn't matter after I took a bite and holy smokes did it taste like the best Cuban poboy I've ever had. Flattened crispy with mayo and pickle juices compacted inside. The sandwhich didn't fall apart and was not greasy. The cheese was stringy which I love! I don't know what they did too the pork loin but it tasted awesome. Out of towner staying in one of the local hotels and I walked here for dinner. Tony waited on me and steered me toward the Cuban and I'm so glad he did! It was beyond delicious! I grabbed a canned drink and fruit salad and sat down while my sandwich was being made...no pressure to pay right away. Tony checked in with me to make sure I liked the sandwich and offered to make me a different one if I didn't like it but there was no need. I splurged and bought some amaretto cookies and as I was paying Tony did a "magic trick" for me with the rice paper wrappers. Best muffaletta I've had outside of New Orleans. Get it with extra meat and no mayonnaise. The olive spread is excellent. Highly recommend.

I don't know if I was at the same restaurant but this place was pretty mediocre. The lady in front is nice and dandy, but the sandwiches unfortunately were not. I ordered the turkey and the bread was some of the worst I've ever eaten, I would have returned it in a second but I had it to go and I wasn't about to drive all the way back. While visiting in Houston for medical purposes, I found this little gem hiding in the strip mall corner! When I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of salads, sandwiches, soup and grocery items. I ordered the Falafel Sandwich for my husband, who is on a restricted diet of no roughage and he said it was delicious! Actually said it was a must have again. I ordered the Cuban Po-boy and it was fabulous! Easily could have enjoyed another one! This place is delish and we will definitely return whenever we are back at the MD Anderson. The po boys were better than I remember (didn't know that was possible) and the staff was even friendlier than I remember. This post is more of a review of their customer review. First , i have been a frequent visitor at this location. When you post a sign with a "today's special" I expect you to honor it. That didn't happen today and refused to Honor it. I don't know if there was a language barrier. If you have an ad or sign with specials then I feel it is fair for me to ask you to honor it. It's not my fault that you didn't take the time to update your sign that is front of your door. I thought I getting a good deal ,but you didn't take time to correct it . Just my 2¢. I've been eating the original since their only location was on Taft St ... It is a taste that grows on u & every time I come to town, I get one (or two or three) at the med center location only... I tried the other more modern locations & it's not the same... Take a jar of the chow chow home. It makes ANY sandwich better... read more

Dooooods. I have been visiting Antone's since I was a kid because of their awesome po-boys. Make sure you go to this store because it is bigger and better. Order the Antone's special, meats and provolone, which is similar to a muffalatta, it will send you into spasms. Olives and deli staples are delicious here. read more

Staying in a hotel not too far away, and I did not rent a car this trip. Last night's hotel "manager's reception" was bad enough to make me not even give it a thought tonight. After reading reviews for all restaurants within a mile of the hotel, I settled on Antone's. Normally when staying near the Medical Center, I head to Rice Village as there are many decent restaurant options there. But with the heat and humidity, did not feel like walking that far tonight. The reviews mentioning the "Cuban Po'Boy" had sparked my cravings, so that is what I ordered. The friendly woman behind the counter suggested one of the homemade sides, and her description of the tabouli made it sound like the perfect refreshing accompaniment. I have to say that it was the best tabouli I have had (granted, I have not had more than 20). The sandwich was delivered to me in a few minutes, and it was delicious. Hot pressed bread, with cheese oozing out, tangy crisp pickles, flavorful pork, and just the right amount of mustard and mayonnaise. I devoured all but one bite, and that was just so I could say I left something on the plate (or to be more precise-in the basket). I ordered a baklava and a 7 layer bar to take with me. At the hotel, I tried the baklava. It was okay- nothing special. Have not tried the 7 layer bar- way too full. I would definitely come to this restaurant again. Be advised that they close at 7 PM, and I believe 5 PM on Sundays, so come early. read more

Before the name change, I would come to Antone's once a week. After the name change, I'm been back once a month. I did not notice any difference the last couple of times BUT today I noticed a big difference!! The bread was soft and fluff, the sauce was a little different, and the macaroni salad was NOT the same. This makes me sad. I'll it one more time but if things change. These are not the greatest sandwiches ever, but they are unique. Once in a while I crave one. This is one of my favorite locations because of the big window upfront. If you come during non-lunch hours--you can quietly enjoy your sandwich. They also house a variety of sodas and cream sodas and orangina. . etc. The other thing is they sell little bits of cheese. For a cheese addict--this is awesome! So you can have your Po Boy and a sliver of Gouda. Yummmmm! read more

Antone's is a Houston classic. Definitely worth the trip. Interesting place. Décor is not fancy, but utilitarian. I would give it a 4-3/4, taking off the 1/4 only because the bread could be better. I asked them to toast the open sub in their oven, and with that, I rate the sandwich at nearly 5 stars! There is also a lot more choice here than in other places, and unusual snacks. read more

Just another sandwich shop to me. I know there's some people truly obsessed with Antone's but I am not one of those. The sandwiches are pre made and you can grab them from the deli counter before you check out. They also can make you a sandwich there if you so desire. And they do have some miscellaneous odd things you can purchase like powders and condiments to take home. Sadly, for me it was just a sandwich shop and I probably will not wake up in the middle of the night craving their cooking. read more
