Well, one of our favorite breakfast places burned down a couple of weeks ago. Franks Grill. So we've ventured out today to find a new place to go eat. We love to find the mom and Pop places and we found one this morning. Angie's Country Kitchen. Now the outside doesn't look like much but don't let that fool you. They've been there since 2000 and what a cute just feel like you're walking into your grandma's house kind of place. The waitress, Aracely, was so sweet. And everybody said good morning to everybody when they walked in. I'm real picky about my eggs. I like eggs over medium. And I have to tell you not many places, get it right but this place got it right. There was no gooey white stuff, but it was still bloody, that's the yolk.. My husband got the two egg plate which came with bacon and hashbrowns or grits. He likes half-and-half where you get half grits half hashbrowns. He loves that. My bacon was crispy like I like it. And huge big old pieces. I just got the sides - one egg and an order bacon. They have got specials all week. They have a steam table and they have things like liver and onions, beef tips and rice, king ranch chicken casserole. They also have kolache's and other sweets. And the prices you cannot beat. The bathroom is clean thank you very much. They are located at Hempstead and Kempwood. Like I said, you might drive by this place and think oh I don't know, But you should give them a try. Because if you want just a good little café to eat some good homemade food. Go to Angie's Country Kitchen. Tell them Miss Lou sent you. read more

I order delivery from Uber Eats from here. I was looking for American breakfast but not from big restaurant chain and this place looked good on the app so I took a dive and ordered food from Angie's Country Kitchen. I got the bacon, egg, cheese croissant sandwich, a waffle and the biscuits & sausage gravy. The sandwich was good but nothing wow me and the waffle was not crispy maybe the delivery to a little too long where the waffle before soft. We went for lunch, you had a choice of several items on the steam table or ordering from the menu. While the steam table food looked good we chose to eat from the menu. I had chicken fried steak and my daughter selected pork chops both entrees were well seasoned and cooked. The mashed potatoes didn't have much flavor, fortunately my daughter carried a small container of Tony Cachere's seasoning which made the potatoes much better. Broccoli and other veggies were good. I work at the Dominos off 2927 Bingle Road and do deliveries all over the area, I passed by this place several times and decided one day to grab something to eat. Best decision I've ever made all 2025. I've been 3 times total and EVERY THING, has been good. Chicken and Dumpling, Salisbury Steak, and even the Brisket have all been good. Green beans. Pinto beans? Oh my goodness some of the best pinto beans I've ever had. I got the brisket plate, 2 sides AND A DRINK. For 16 and change. YES 16 dollars and change. Wow!!! A true hidden gem in plain sight, from the moment you walk in you step back in time into a truly old-fashioned diner. From the food to the service to the immaculately clean but worn dining room every part of this experience was awesome. If it's been a long time since I have been treated this well coming into a restaurant, you can tell by the way their customers treat them back that they have a love for what they do, as I was seated eating multiple tables of people came in and all of them came and gave them a hug and had a conversation with the staff, this is just something you don't get to see too often anymore, I am grateful to have found this restaurant and even more grateful that it's only blocks away from my house, more updates to come as I try different things on the menu, but their eggs, bacon and biscuit were prepared to perfection. read more

I was passing by killing time and wanted to find a nice place to get breakfast, and this place popped out and looked like a nice hole in the wall -- AND WAS! The layout is very homey, and the service is very friendly, and I felt like I was speaking with family. The vibe was very nice, and the food wasn't Michelin-star level, but THAT'S OKAY -- it was even better!! I got the chicken fried steak and a side of biscuits and gravy, and it tasted like a nice home-cooked meal and was delicious. The coffee tasted like the perfect blend of burnt dirt and coffee, and I loved it. The prices on the menu seemed inaccurate because, based on what I got and how huge the portions were, I should've spent around $18-$20, but once I got the bill, it was only $14!! After speaking with the lady about what I wanted in the beginning, it appeared she adjusted the price and overall order to adapt to what I was looking for and discounted the overall price as such. Total spent was $24 because I just HADD to tip the wonderful waitress for immaculate service and making me feel at home in an area of town I have never been to. Wonderful hole-in-the-wall family-owned establishment, and I can't wait until I can come eat here again and speak with the wonderful staff!! Our first time trying this restaurant. I placed my order over the phone and person that answered sound annoyed when I told her my name it sounded like she couldn't believe that was my name. When we picked up or ordered I see why the lady sounded annoyed there was only 2 waitresses and it looked busy. The place looks old, we waited for our food because it wasn't ready. Angie's kitchen is a local south comfort sensation and their clientele are all pretty much regulars. I have been here a couple of times and enjoyed the food. This time around, I went and ordered a Chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes n gravy and okra. The chicken was a nice sized breast and very tasty. I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes and the gravy that came with it. As I was eating my meal, one of the workers came to my table and gave me a dinner roll. The okra was very good too. It was fried. There are daily specials that are available along with other items that can be ordered also. The place is fairly economical and it is a nice little café. I'd driven past this place many times before but never actually stepped in since the restaurant looks rough from the outside. The exterior of the restaurant would make you think twice about whether or not they served good food, or if they served food good enough for the passerby. I finally had the chance to check this restaurant out when Yelper Mike M. invited me to have lunch with him here. I arrived at the restaurant a few minutes before he did. The restaurant is located in a small center with limited parking spots. However, you'll notice that a lot of people would park on the dirt shoulder off of Hempstead Rd. Thankfully I found a pretty good spot to park. I waited outside by the entrance and wait for Mike M. to join me. I had thought that this would be a full service restaurant. Turned out, it was not. This restaurant is actually kind of like Luby's where you point at the food that you want and then you pay after. Just at a much smaller scale. I opted to try the chicken parmesan with noodles and I also asked for a side of corn instead of salad. The guy served me up quick and then I brought my plate back to the table. Someone also brought out some complimentary rolls for our meals, which was awesome since you wouldn't expect anything complimentary from this type of restaurant. My meal was an excellent value for the price (although to be honest, I didn't pay anything since Mike M. decided to treat me - thanks, Mike! I still owe you a beer!) My chicken parmesan and noodle were tasty even after sitting out on display for who knows how long. The meal size was perfect to carry me over until dinner time, and like I said, my meal was a great value for the price. You don't get a whole lot in terms of service except for when somebody's filling up your water glass, but that was really all I needed and my water glass was never empty so, high five all around! There's an almost empty pastry display by the cashier. I didn't really see what they had in there, but obviously they sell kolache here (see the sign outside) but I didn't have a taste and so I can't comment on them. Angie's Country Kitchen is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area and looking for a good lunch spot. Don't expect anything here to blow your mind, but if you just want a good meal for your money, Angie's got your back! read more

I was worried about my grits being to soft or to gritty, and they were perfect! Porkchops were seasoned perfectly. I felt like I dined in, because everything was so fresh. The presentation was remarkable and they followed added requests superbly!! I am PICKY about my eggs but they got it right! The portions were much bigger than anticipated so one meal became two so the value is outstanding! I started to order from one of the 2 mainstream "commercial" places known for breakfast but I'm glad I chose this place! Definitely gonna be my go to spot when I just don't wanna bother cooking. I have had this place bookmarked for a while now. I sometimes use Hempstead Rd. when I need to avoid 290 (construction/accidents) and I have noticed Angie's as I would drive by. I looked it up on Yelp and the info was scant with no menu, website info nor have the current 12 reviews provided me much info and some are several years old. I was able to determine that it's a breakfast and lunch place that caters to the local work crowd. Today, I finally drove there for lunch. When you pull up to this hole in the wall type restaurant you don't expect much. Parking is somewhat limited as it is in a small and old strip center and there are other businesses on each side of it. It is located about 30 yards north of 34th street on Hempstead. When you walk in you see a steam table on your left and a cashier and kolache counter straight ahead. The day's menu is directly behind the steam table. I was greeted and ordered my food at the steam table. Of the reviews that I read a couple of people said they liked the catfish and the server behind the steam table told me that the catfish was very popular so I ordered it with 2 sides. They were fried okra and mixed vegetables. One of the other options was beef tips which I almost ordered. The restaurant has a small dining room where you enter and then a larger one attached to the smaller one. I went in the larger room and grabbed a table. While I was waitingi on my meal, a lady was bussing tables and she asked me how did I hear of Angie's? I told her and then she introduced herself to me as Serena the owner. She said that she had bought the restaurant from Angie sometime in the past but kept the name. I asked her what was popular on the menu and she told me the fish. Then she said a lot of people like the beef tips also. She said that she cooks the beef tips for several hours and only has it on Tuesdays and Friday's. I told her I almost ordered that instead of the fish. She thanked me for coming and went back to work. My food arrived less than 10 minutes after ordering (see pic). I started with the mixed veggies and was immediately pleased. They were good and I could taste the flavor of each veggie (4). Then I ate a few of the fried okra. They were hot and very good. Good flavor and I liked the batter they were fried in (4.5). Then I went for the fish. The two fillets were excellent(5). What made it so good with taste was the batter the use. Not your typical cornmeal batter (not that cornmeal is bad) but better. As I ate each piece of fish I liked it even more. I love food that is like that. It's gets better as the meal progresses. The meal came with a portion of tartar sauce which I typically don't use. If I use sauce with seafood it's usually red like cocktail sauce or ketchup. I tried this tartar sauce and fell in love with it. It had a unique taste to it. My dilemma was that I liked the fish plain to taste the batter but then I liked the tartar sauce on the fish to taste the tartar sauce! What an unusual situation that was!!! This was one damn fine meal. Oh, I forgot to tell you that it's MSRP was $8.50. I was full when I finished too. Serena came back to check on me and I asked her about the fish batter and tartar sauce. She said that her fish batter is a combination of cornmeal mix and Zatarain's. She said the Zatarain's helps keep the batter from being too salty and that's what gives the fish that unique and excellent taste that I experienced. The tartar sauce does have some horseradish in it but it is very mild in taste and along with minced onions and a few other ingredients gives it its different flavor from most tartar sauces. As I was finishing I was trying to decide if I should write a review just based on this meal or wait and come back for a second visit and try something else like I usually do. I knew that my rating was going to be at least a 4 at this point. Honestly, the meal was really a 5 but it was my first visit and I was cautious about going that high with just one visit. Then Serena appears with a small bowl of the beef tips over rice. She said this was on the house and she wanted me to try it. I thanked her and thought that beef tips is probably what I would have come back for so she is saving me a trip! As I ate the beef tips I smiled. Each piece of beef melt in my mouth. I was amazed at how tender each piece was. Not some of the pieces,,,all of the pieces! For a second I thought that she must of handpicked each beef tip from the pot before she gave it to me but then realized that was ridiculous. LOL. The gravy and rice were so yummy this little bowl of food was perfection(5). That's when I decided that with only one visit but being able to eat two entrees this place deserved a 5. Nothing is fancy in here but it is clean. They don't have the steam table on Saturday but you can get the fish, pork cops and other grill items from their menu. I was warned that this is not the sort of place for a "delicate" girl to eat. It's not the nicest looking place and it draws in a mostly male crowd. But, it's basically good southern food...stuff like pork chops, spaghetti, chicken cordon bleu, fried catfish. They have the typical sides too: fried okra, greens, black eyed peas, etc. There are usually featured specials for the day. You can pay around 7 bucks or so and end up with a main course and two sides. Order up at the front where the food is and they either hand you your food there (Luby's style) or bring it to the table fresh from the back, depending on what you order. I had the fried catfish with fried okra and black eyed peas the first time I went. I took a number and waited for them to cook the catfish fresh...boy was it hot when it came out. I'm not sure what sort of breading it was, but I don't think it was cornmeal. It was excellent. The fried okra was probably some of the best I've had. Crisp and fresh...not soggy or anything like the frozen stuff. The black eyed peas were good, but a bit salty. I had the chicken cordon bleu the second time I went and almost wasn't able to finish from all the bread I ate before the food came. Evidently I was not aware my previous visit of the delicious cornbread they bring to the table. Yum!! The servers there are friendly and helpful...they call people "hon" and all that. It's a nice laid back atmosphere that isn't fancy, but the food is pretty good if you're around the 290 area between the Beltway and 610. And...I hear they serve breakfast too...hmm. read more
