I decided to visit my local archery store, Top Shot, to take a few more steps in that direction. I was greeted by Dana, who was wonderful, and knowledgeable about helping a beginner like me get started in the intricate world of bows and equipment. She helped me decide on a good quality, beginner compound bow (Elite Ember), then she helped me get my new bow ready for practice by determining the best draw length, pull weight, and arrows for target shooting. She also referred me to a great resource for lessons and open range practice. I'm definitely recommending Top Shot for great customer service and then selection of equipment.

Nobody looked at the way I bowled, I didn't get my free game with ball purchase (per website). I asked about lessons and was told that since leagues had started they didn't do lessons. The shop itself was dingy and dusty and had almost no inventory. I had to make my purchase through catalogs with very little guidance. The owner seemed disinterested in my purchase (maybe because I had a lot of questions). When I got my ball the holes seemed tight, and was just told I was holding it wrong, but he reluctantly widened them. Maybe for the experienced bowler who knows what they want, this might be a good shop, but I could get the same or better service from an online order.

One of the salesmen was assisting the customer with his firearm purchase. The other salesman was sitting behind the counter eating his lunch. He completely ignored me, despite me standing there with the pistol rugs in my hand and ready to pay. He never bothered to acknowledge my presence or ask if I needed help. I know that he saw me because he looked directly at me. When he finished eating he got up, threw his plastic fork in the trash and walked in the back while still never interacting with me. It was like I was completely invisible. Finally, another sales person came out from the back and asked if I was being helped. I said no, finally paid for my purchase, and left. I wonder what the store owner/manager would have to say if he reviewed the surveillance video.

So this is my personal favorite local flyshop with which to do business for several reasons. First, they have a very good selection of fly tying materials, and an interesting assortment of books too. Whenever I find a hole in my fly tying material stash I know I'll find what I need here. Second, their prices are very fair. Comparable to internet sources, but you get your goods right away! Third, the shop has regular demos open to the public. They book some interesting speakers to visit & share their knowledge on a broad range of fly fishing related topics. They also offer casting and fly tying classes for beginners and 'experts' alike. Lastly, the owner Joseph's a class act all the way. In this highly competitive & specialized market we need to give these shops our business or expect them to disappear.
