It's Easter Sunday. I am on a road trip with my elementary school age daughter and we stop in Fresno for lunch. We also happened to stop at a random nearby park to eat lunch and let my kid play before we finish the last 3-4 hours of our trip. There was a skinny pit bull wandering around with a leash wrapped around its neck. A few people told me that someone had driven up to the park, opened the door, shoved it out and peeled off. This happened not 5 minutes before we got there. What is wrong with people!? No one and I mean NO ONE at the park wanted to take responsibility for it, and I simply could not leave it there. I took the dog to an Emergency Vet's office but of course it didn't have a microchip and they claimed they couldn't take it in, not even overnight until it could go to animal control the next day. So I'm STUCK! It's Easter Sunday so EVERYTHING is closed. It's already rough to try and get help on a Sunday, doubly so for Easter Sunday. I sat in the car with the dog and my young daughter and made at least 30 calls to every single vet's office, rescue, and animal organization I could find to try and find someone who could at least take the dog overnight until animal control opened the next day. I absolutely could not take the dog home with me on my road trip as we have a dog who doesn't get along with other dogs. Also, what if it turned out it wasn't the owners who pushed it out of the car, but someone else? Maybe the true owner was still looking? It wouldn't be fair to take it hundreds of miles away. 99% of the phone calls were not answered and the very few that did could not take a dog for one reason or another and referred me to animal control. I was getting desperate, I'd already spent two hours trying to find some place for this dog to go. I was beginning to think the unthinkable: that I'd have to just tie it up somewhere in the shade and call the police non emergency number to let them know about this dog. I had to get back on the road as I had a time commitment. I was so lucky that someone with Animal Compassion actually happened to answer the phone on Easter Sunday and doubly lucky that someone was there who could decide to take the dog for me. We were there in 15 minutes and they were able to take the dog and I'm so very grateful to them for helping out this sweet, abandoned soul. I hope she finds a good home. About six years ago, after putting my Rottie down, I saw a picture of Jackie (aka One Eyed Jack and Missy Moo Moo) online, did the application, drove to Fresno and picked her up. We just adopted our sweet puppy from Anna from Animal Compassion Team! Our family has been looking for the last 2 months and when we saw him on the adoption site, we fell in love. I emailed ACT and the next day Anna emailed me back and we spoke over the phone. She was extremely informative, kind and patient. We discussed the full process and she helped answered all my questions. If you are lucky to adopt from ACT and Anna is the foster mom, you will be in great hands. She really loves all her foster pups and has been doing this years and you can tell. The whole process was wonderful and now we have a new family member. I know the adoption/rescue process can take a long time and you may get discouraged because the puppy/dog (you want) always seem to get adopted so fast, but please be hopeful and keep trying. Not that ACT needs reviews cause they obviously are5 star for every comment on here, but they are fantastic.! The employees make sure the animals that are getting adopted actually fit your family before you decide, plus you can do sleepovers with the pets at your home! Sadly, we had to return our pup because he but my son in the face and my dog in the face. I asked them to make sure when they put him back up on the website that he is advertised as needing a home just for him with no kids and no other dogs. This dog is definitely traumatized and needs a family who will really be supportive of his needs only for right now. When I asked to return the dog, act didn't seem to have a problem taking the dog back however indicated that they had never seen those behaviors. I outlined all the needs for the dog, the recommendations that the vet had and also again emphasized that this dog has now bitten my child's face as well as my dog. My dog is now recovering from surgery due to the bite. Anyhow I just looked on the website and this dog is named Cowboy. If you're interested in him he is a sweet dog, he's a big love however he has covert behaviors. The patterns are very unpredictable. He should not be in a home where there are children or other dogs at this time. I'm surprised that they advertised him just the way that they advertised him to me. Had I known those things I would not have opted to take him in. read more

This organization lets me know that there is hope for Fresno! These are some selfless, caring, hard working people who love animals and want to see an end to homeless animals. They have lower adoption fees than many other rescue groups which makes it easier for families to adopt a new pet, however, I suggest donating what you can because they can use every penny. Their donations go directly to helping provide for surgery for sick and injured animals, food, and any other need the homeless animals have. They also have great specials every once in a while like two for one kittens or half off adoptions for a given month. They make sure the dog or cat is matched up with the perfect family. If you have room in your home to foster or adopt, please contact ACT! ..they have a great facebook that they check often, they post stories and photos of their adoptables.... We went here to adopt a dog and didn't see a good fit so they offered to show us pictures of foster dogs. A foster family ended up bringing out the dog we ended up adopting. They had asked us our likes in a dog, and she was the perfect fit. The foster family did a awesome job training our puppy. We had been to a few shelters before going here and I will definitely go back. The people here truly love every animal in their facility. The only downside was they didn't return my phone calls when I had questions about our new dog. There is always people that rate great facilities like this one low but I'm here to tell you this place impressed us. Highly recommend. Thanks guys, our companion is thumbs up. In 2009 I adopted an older dog from the CCSPCA. I noticed on his cage there was a note that said if he was not adopted to contact ACT. Two days after taking him home I took him to a vet for a check up. I found out he had heart worms. I contacted the CCSPCA and they told me that was an expensive procedure and to bring him back for an exchange. I got the idea that they were going to put him down. I contacted ACT and explained the situation. They put me in contact with a local vet and ACT covered his entire procedure and follow up care free of charge to me. This organization is great. They truly care about animals and take great care of them. read more

This is an amazing organization that truly and genuinely cares about the animals. They will do whatever it takes to help an animal or an individual trying to help an animal. They take very good care of their animals and even though the animals are orphans, they seem truly happy with these people. We fostered a dog for a short time and when we brought him in to the adoption event, they were all happy to see him and all greeted him with his name. That dog got adopted that day. I wouldn't recommend ACT to anyone. At first i thought that it was great that they were trying to rescue animals and make sure they were adopted! But i bought a puppy and she broke her elbow in my backyard so i took her to several different vet hospitals to get estimates and see what the best option would be. They informed me that she needed surgery but because the joint was part of the brake it would be a very expensive surgery around $2500-$4500. I simply couldn't afford the surgery so i wanted to surrender her instead of putting her down so that she could get the surgery and then be placed with a good home. I contacted ACT and let them know about my situation and that my dog was in great condition besides her broken elbow. They sent me an e-mail back about 2 hours later saying.. "Is she full breed and is her tail docked?" I dont understand why they would care about the looks of my puppy and not the well being of her. She needed medical attention ASAP and all they wanted to know was if she was a mix breed or full.... ACT is simply after the money and i will NEVER donate money to them or suggest my friends to go there ever again! read more

Wonderful and caring staff. Very helpful in finding a puppy. Phoned us as soon as they received my application and held two puppies for us to meet the following morning (which most rescues will not do). We looked for a couple of months for a puppy and either lost the adoption to someone else or the rescue never acknowledged our application, or when they did it was too late. Thank you to Trish and Joyce and all the other ACT volunteers for giving up a significant amount of their time to giving these dogs and puppies a second chance. read more

Brenda the president is extremley rude to certain people , she has the dogs out that she really has no interest in adopting out and is prejudice against children receiving a dog unless they fit her expectations , if the dogs available are for adults then list it as so , she was rude to my fifteen year old and yelled at her when my daughter asked her why she couldnt adopt the dog . I really have respect for people who give up their time for a cause but to be so rude especially to a child is uncalled for. when I asked her who funds her she said it is surley not you very rude .... read more

I am very disappointed in how this place is ran. We had to surrender their dog back to them. She had broke out of her cage when we were home and gave herself an eye injury that turned into conjectivitis. They told me in order to surrender her back I have to take her to the vet and pay for her meds and they will accept the dog back. Isn't that what your funding is for? None the less 200$ later we got the stuff. The next day, we went to surrender her. They asked me what happened. I told her that the dog tried biting my small children when they sat on the couch. And she told me "well, that's her space. She's never done that with us." Well no, my house is my kids house before a dogs. We brought a box of stuff for her including expensive dog food she was still eating. Over 200$ of stuff on top of the vet bill we paid the day prior. My kids, wanted to say bye to the dog and she snatched our dog from us so fast my child couldn't say bye. My child has Autism. And she took the dog away from her before she could even say anything. It was really upsetting seeing my child upset. I would never come here again to adopt a pet. I would save your money. This place is a scam. Rude people, dishonest people, and very ignorant people here. Look elsewhere. read more

Working on our third adoptee from ACT. How nice are they? For our second dog from them, when we took her to our vet the first day because she had obviously been ignored and malnourished by her previous "humans," we spent $325 just for treatments and prescriptions. We then went back to ACT to pay for the adoption costs and without our asking ACT waived the adoption fee. They simply want to place animals, and they are a definite addition to the "no kill" world of pet shelters. They are the kind of people who make you want to change jobs and go into pet fostering full time. read more

We went into Whities to buy a fish and came out with a puppy. ACT is a wonderful place to adopt. The puppy i adopted was born in a foster home that cared and loved these puppies. I highly recommend adopting from ACT, the Animals are healthy and well taken care of. Some shelters you really can't trust but ACT when you see the animals there is no question they are healthy and happy and the staff/foster parents care. read more

I unfortunately had a terrible experience with one of your female employees at Petsmart in Riverpark Fresno. She approached me with my five-month-old puppy and continue to argue with me that my dog is not over five months and she's not allowed in the store. I then told her she's had all of her shots and has been through Parvo already and I've gotten the okay from MY VET that she can be around other dogs. she continue to argue with me she then proceeded to stick her finger in my dogs mouth without my permission to look at her teeth, not only that but during all this caused a huge scene in front of all the customers there at the store. I called the management there a Petsmart and reported to complaint also I will be doing negative reviews on your guys half. Her behavior towards me and my dog was unacceptable, unprofessional, rude and aggressive. Its very unfortunate that you guys let a person like that represent your guys animal shelter. read more

My first visit was horrible. The staff was ill-informed and the person who appeared to be in charge that day was rude and abusive. I was just trying to ask questions. Apparently they had a event scheduled for 2 pm. You wouldn't know it since there was no tables out with people to provide information. The group that was part of the event didn't show up until 2 pm. Many people were arriving early for the event, and there was no organization. Heaven forbid that you tried to ask questions and get information. I was yelled at and threatened by one of the staff. She follow me to my car and continued her tirade. I will never go there again, if I need to save a dog, I'll go to a kill shelter an adopt. I tried to offer this woman an apology, but she threw it in my face and slammed my car door on me accompanied with a threat to kick my a$$. I am so upset by this incident that I am compelled to write this. I feel owed an apology, which I will never see. I sure hope they treat the animals better than people like me that are coming to their facility for the first time. I have been a forever home to ALL my animals for the last 30 years. I simply housed a little dog for 3 days until she could be brought here. Like they say, no good deed goes unpunished. read more

Love love love ACT. I remember what this area was like for animal lovers before ACT was around and it was heartbreaking. So many homeless animals that would end up sick, starving or euthanized. I have seen ACT pull off some miraculous feats to rescue animals. They network with the community and build relationships and they also treat each animal with individual care. They don't just hand anyone an animal, they make sure the animal will be safe and cared for first. That really says a lot to me. For those who gave bad reviews because they were denied a pet, there was probably a reason why it wasn't right. They aren't afraid to do things that are difficult like cover a surgery or perform a wide scale TNR project. I adopted my little Alyssa from ACT when they first started and she's the best dog ever. She's in her golden years now and I have cherished every minute that she's been mine. I will always be grateful to ACT for rescuing her. Even if you can't afford to donate or adopt, there are some great volunteer opportunities. You can go and just play with and socialize the dogs if you want. Win-win! read more

We adopted a husky named Jude from ACT and absolutely fell in love with him. He was so mellow but also had his rambunctious moments. He got along so well with our other dog Koda and our 6month old son. About a couple days after we take him home, our other dog Koda fell ill from intestinal obstruction and we had to take her to urgent care here at SF SPCA. We are not wealthy or well-off by any means so we were hit with a financial hardship we were absolutely not prepared for and realized that we wouldn't want Jude to go through that later down the road either if something like this were to happen. This was our worst case scenario come true. We decided we had to return him back to Fresno and I can honestly just say, throughout our days with Jude, Grace Munera always kept in contact with us every step of the way before the adoption, during the adoption, after when he came home with us, and even after we had to return him. There was no judgement or anything from Grace, she was even so kind to check in on us about our dog Koda and also updated us that Jude was adopted to someone wonderful. Honestly, even though the circumstances were not so great, our experience with Animal Compassion Team was amazingly exceptional. Grace truly cares about the animals and the people and she is just such a kind soul. We miss Jude, but we are so happy he found his forever home with someone else.
