I was feeling pretty helpless after a couple vet visits at other places with no improvement, I turned to Dr Mundell at ADS. This doc holds YEARS of wisdom and experience. He explains the health issues and treatment very well. We have a multitude of issues with our pet, We came up with a treatment plan and we are relieved to have a direction to getting our Golden retriever back to good health. He provided us a complimentary nail trim which was so badly needed also. The women at the front desk are super friendly and educated in pet care as well which is a huge help and time saver when needing questions answered. You don't always have to wait for the doctor if you get stuck on treatment at home. You get what you pay for and I like to cut through the chase so this is a perfect fit for us. Our family had been exposed to toxic mold in our previous apartment which caused everyone health issues. Including our dog who lost a lot of hair. After some testing, I was told it is probably his thyroid. So he was put on oral medication. And amazingly, IT WORKED!! My baby got his hair back. I only took 1 star off because the costs were expensive. There has to be a better way to afford vet. care. Thankful for credit cards (that have a lower interest rate than Credit Care). I saw Dr. Mundell yesterday because our foster dog has an ongoing paw infection (coupled with other ear, eye, and skin issues) we've been unable to clear up. The office had a calm and quiet atmosphere putting my pup more at ease than your typical vet clinic. There were no other dogs there while we were being seen. Dr. Mundell came in and spent a lot of time engaging with us about my dog's background, behavior, temperament, and cross-referencing with his medical history, diagnoses, and medications prescribed. He was incredibly thorough and knowledgeable. His patient/pup manner is very calm and comforting... putting my anxious pup more at ease. I was never rushed to end the appointment; I felt they allocated a good amount of time for our visit. Dr. Mundell was literally on the floor with me showing me the examples of his diagnosis and treatment plan for my dog's paws. You can tell he is incredibly experienced, passionate about his work, and loves helping dogs. I really recommend this clinic. My ShihTzu (Charlee) began having ear infection on Aug. 17th 2020, & since then has been treated by our local vet but with no results & finally she went completely deaf. She lost her hair color as well, & itching all over. Took her to see Dr Mundel Dec 12th 2021. At that time he did a "culture test" & found out what was the problem. After treating her with the meds he prescribed, Charlee has her hearing back, & her color returned, & the itching has ended as of February 3rd. 2022. We got recommended to see the doctor from a frenchies group. Don't even understand what he was talking about the entire time. He was talking in professional medical terms the whole time without explanation. And he seemed to try to keep the conversation longer unnecessarily. Maybe he charged by time ? Anyway with listening to him talk to himself for almost three hours.. we didn't get any questions answered about our frenchies allergies besides a huge bill (500...) Also he would only do environmental allergies test on your frenchies ( no food allergies test ...come on what's the point? ) and the shots he will create has only 75% chances to work .. so don't waste your money on him...try Apple cider vinegar and baking soda, it works better than him! read more

I can't tell you how much I recommend Dr. Alan Mundell. I learned so much from him in such a short amount of time. I have a golden retriever that has struggled with severe allergies since the day we brought him home. I've lost track of how many vets we've been to and, until I went to Animal Dermatology Services, I thought I'd never find the answers I was looking for. They're a wealth of knowledge and I truly believe they have your animals best interest at heart, unlike most of the money grabbing vets out there. If you're feeling defeated and just don't know what to do anymore, please consider spending the money and seeing this doctor. You'll be so glad you did. Also, if I've learned anything as a dog owner, it's to get pet insurance as soon as you bring your pup home. I was on the fence initially, but it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. Be sure to do your research and pick the right one though. We went with Trupanion and they're great. Other insurances can cap out after a certain amount of claims. You'll spend a bit extra compared to other insurance companies, but I'm telling you you'll be glad you did as most pets will need it at some point in their life. He is the third Dermatologist my Noel has been to and in one visit has helped my babies paws more than the two Vets and two Dermatologists I have had before my present Vet. The previous two Vets had told me there was nothing you could do for the extreme dry and crunchy condition of my dogs paws. Wrong! Dr. Mundell, in one visit, has made Noel's paws look better than in the past three years. I highly recommend Dr. Mundell and his staff. Dr Mundell is one of the BEST vets I have ever taken any of my fur babies too. He was recommended by our local vet when our German Shepherd started to lose her fur and scratch frantically. Dr Mundell provided great testing and treatment (almost all covered by our pet insurance), and he has continued to be an advocate for the longer term well being of our GSD. Although his focus in dermatology, Dr Mundell has always looked out for her overall health by occasionally calling t our attention issues our regular vet missed (after regular vet follow ups, Dr Mundell always turns out to be spot on!). In addition to that, he is the most genuinely nice man we've ever met. We give him 5-stars all the way!!!! Well worth the trip to Edmonds and the cost of a specialist. read more

Dr. Alan Mundell is saving my dog from his allergies. I tried a naturopath veterinarian on the advice of my dog walker, but all she could do was stick my dog full of acupuncture needles and recommend moving the stagnant chi away from his kidneys. Dr. Mundell, however, performed a dermal test that was able to determine allergies to all known culprits in the Pacific Northwest. After a regimen of prescribed allergen treatments, my dog has stopped shedding enough hair on a daily basis to produce an alien race of hamsters. Getting an appointment here isn't easy, but once you're in you have some of the best care in Seattle going toward your pet. Dr. Mundell never rushes our appointments and always takes the time to answer all of my questions and concerns. With the exception of the dermal test, I pay Dr. Mundell the same as what the naturopath charged, but the visits are definitely more costly than using a basic veterinarian. The restored well-being and health of my dog have been worth every penny spent. read more

My little cat was scratching all of her fur off. She was a bloody, scabby mess. We tried allergen free diets, special dust treatments for the house, acupuncture, herbs, steroid shots, topical creams, and anything else the veterinarians would recommend. Dr. Mundell was the first to get any lasting results with her. He was conservative in his assessment, and very thorough in his analysis of my cat's condition. Dr. Mundell is the perfect combination of smart and compassionate, informing you every step of the way without being too simple or overly technical in his explanations. The allergen treatments have helped my cat greatly, and though she looked hilarious for a few weeks with her shaved patch from the allergen test, she really responded well. The caveat is that the initial tests and the allergen are EXPENSIVE. Not too bad for the follow up appointments or the refills on the allergen. We probably spent more at the other vets in the months of attempts to find a remedy, so it all comes out in the wash. read more

Dr. Mundell is simply amazing. My boyfriend's childhood dog became very sick when the dog was 3 years old and they took him to multiple vets, many of whom recommended putting him down because they didn't know what was wrong and thus couldn't treat it. Someone recommended them to Dr. Mundell, who immediately recognized the problem and was able to put him on treatment. The dog lived another 8 great years as a results. Fast forward 15 years and our current dog's nose starts scabbing over and losing its black coloring. We took her to four vets, but nobody was able to treat the problem. We should have taken her to Dr. Mundell right away. Even though it is a bit of a drive, it is absolutely worth it. He immediately diagnosed the problem and we were able to start her on a treatment. It often takes a while to get in for your first appointment, but after that it is much quicker. When my dog got a really painful infection on her vulva, he was able to squeeze her in at 7 a.m. the next day. It is also worth noting that it often takes a while to get in because he schedules a lot of time for each patient and consequently isn't able to see as many patients in a day. For your first appointment, plan for an hour and a half. After he is familiar with your dog, they are often shorter. The man can talk for hours and is not super cuddly with the pets, but he is extremely knowledgeable and he costs the same as other pet derms in the area. He has completely changed the quality of life for our dog and consequently us. I cannot recommend him enough. read more

Update a few years later - our dog is not "cured" of his allergies but has had FAR fewer allergic outbreaks since we had our allergy shots. Still occasional ear infections which are allergy related, but managed well with my regular vet. His skin looks 100% better and he has much less overall itching without harsh steroids we used to rely on. Not all pets have the same response but I'm very pleased with dr mundells understanding of my golden retriever and his all too common allergy issues. read more

I drove from Edmonds to Ballard every 8 weeks for over 3 years with my little cat wailing all the way there and back! Now that he has moved to Edmonds it is much easier but I never minded the trip because he has given my Carmen almost 4 additional years of life. She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2006 for which he gives her a gold shot every 8 weeks. It takes a while to get an appointment with Dr. Mundell, but it is well worth the wait. We adopted a little Boston Terrier with skin problems about a year ago, and since then, we'd tried just about everything to fix her dry, flaking skin. We tried hypoallergenic shampoos, diet changes, and seemed to be taking her to the vet all the time Along with her skin problems came frequent ear infections (related to the skin/allergy issues). The appointment with Dr. Mundell was fabulous. He must have spent close to an hour and a half with us (the longest non-emergency vet appointment I've ever had), looking her over with a microscope and getting to know us. It took him just a few minutes to figure out that she probably had a bacterial infection on her skin (which he later confirmed with a skin scraping), allergies (turns out based on her skin test, she's even allergic to her normal skin flora--yay!), yeast in her ears (which explains the chronic ear infections), and a small, non-malignant mole-tumor on her tummy. He went through every diagnosis and test with me, explaining what was going on and why. The poor guy even tolerated all of her nervous farting in his face while he was checking out the skin on her back legs. Be forewarned, your visit will be expensive. But (especially given the results), I don't feel like a single test was unnecessary, and when I looked at my bill, I realized that Dr. Mundell's fee was a tiny portion of the total cost (approximately 15% of the entire bill), which is amazing given how much time he spent with us. He also tried to save us money where he could, even recommending that we just have our regular vet take off her mole when she gets her teeth cleaned since his specialty lab was probably going to be more expensive. Hopefully, this is an investment which will also save us some time, money, and stress in the long run by preventing her recurring ear infections. I have to say, I was a little overwhelmed at first with how much was going on with my baby, but Dr. Mundell was dead on with every hunch. A week and a half later, our dog looks amazing. Her skin has cleared up, her ears are clear, and we've noticed that she seems to just generally be feeling a whole lot better too. We have had Lola to two different vets since we've had her, and frankly, no one but Dr. Mundell had any idea what was going on with her skin and ears. He works wonders with animals who have tried everything....regular vets,nathuropathic, etc. I tried them all and nothing worked for skin condition until Dr. Mundell. He's not inexpensive but if you have an animal with a ongoing condition that can't be resolved I promise you he will cure your pet. My dog became so severely ill with allergies last year that his fur fell out in patches, and he had infected weeping sores all over his body, and itchy welts. We took our pups to Animal Dermatology Service for several years - starting in Ballard and moving on to the new location in Edmonds. We were very pleased with the services we received but decided to get a second opinion from another local dermatologist as treatment received controlled the symptoms but the problems still remained. We learned quickly that Animal Dermatology Service didn't use the latest technology - whereas the new clinic was able to provide an actual video recording of the issues going on in my dog's ears. After following a treatment plan with the new provider my dog's ears were healed in 6-months; versus continuing a regular protocol of medications and check-ups for over 4 years at Animal Dermatology Service. The new provider was able to assess that my dog was deaf in one ear. Animal Dermatology Service unable to diagnose my dog's hearing loss. Each visit I received a still photograph of the wax build up in my dog's ears. I, too, raved about the wonderful progress my dog made while a patient of Animal Dermatology Service until I was able to compare to a more advanced level of service. On a personal note my dog passed away while receiving treatment at Animal Dermatology Service. When picking up medication for my second dog the doctor or the clinic staff didn't mention my dog I had just lost. My dog was a patient of Dr. Mundell's for a long time. I have lost two other furry friends since changing providers; our new doctor was very kind when he made a donation to a foundation that supports research in animal dermatology in the name of both of my pets. read more

I took my Golden Retriever to Dr Mundell for his first office visit recently and ended up with very mixed feelings about the entire experience from start to finish. My dog has been suffering from allergies for over two years and he's barely 3 years old so it's been going on most of his life. His symptoms include various skin ailments including bumps on his chin, rear and tummy, red & itchy ears and his feet become so red and irritated that he sometimes won't even stand up. Nothing I or his primary Vet did seemed to work and I've felt completely helpless watching my poor boy suffer, constantly chewing & licking himself obsessively sometimes until he's bleeding. I ended up calling Animal Dermatology Service partly because of the reviews I read here. After dealing with our issues for so long, the two and a half months waiting didn't really seem like much. But, we were definitely anticipating the appointment eagerly and very happy when it finally rolled around. Now that I've met Dr Mundell in person, I'm really surprised to read a couple of the other reviews, especially one that states he explained treatment in an easy-to-understand way. That seems incredibly difficult to believe as I could barely understand a word of what he was saying the entire duration of the appointment and most of the things I did understand seemed almost completely irrelevant. While he did spend a significant amount of time with us (around an hour and a half), I think he probably could have fit the actually pertinent information into about 15 minutes honestly. Half of what he said I couldn't make out at all because he didn't speak clearly--more muttered, almost as if he was talking to himself at times--and rambled on without stopping, telling stories about other patients mixed in with a bunch of repetitive, speculative babble. Sorry, I know it's harsh but that's the real truth of it. Even so, I could have gotten past that but there were a couple of things that really bothered me. One is he wouldn't let me speak at all--and I mean not at all. I think, since I know my dog better than anyone else, the information I have dealing with his allergies firsthand might be valuable. And, even if not, I am paying to be there and want to be heard. He would actually keep talking and raise his voice over mine to keep me from getting a word in edgewise. I didn't get to say anything or interject the entire visit which was a real put-off. Kind of like "only speak when spoken to" kind of thing. Really weird for a health care professional. The thing that disturbed me BY FAR more than anything else is his lack of attention to my dog, his patient. He never petted him the entire visit and when my dog would walk up to him, didn't even look down at him!! What the heck. I was very, very uncomfortable with that. He would just keep talking and look straight ahead when my dog approached him as if he wasn't even there. Outside of the 30 seconds we spent having my dog lay on the floor so he could quickly examine his tummy & feet, Dr Mundell never associated with him whatsoever. That is ultimately the reason we will not be back. I care deeply for my dog and feel horrible when I have to leave him with anyone, even people he loves, but when he's going to the doctor it's a much worse feeling. I can't see handing him over to be sedated for allergy testing to someone who doesn't even attempt to try to make him more comfortable and at ease while undergoing traumatic diagnostics. It was very, very, very odd to watch how impersonal he was with my dog and, by the time our visit was over, I was practically running out of there. I felt like I'd betrayed my dog by bringing him there, especially when I had to let them take him in the back for a blood draw. I did do that since it was such a quick procedure but I still felt horrible about it. All that being said, I will tell you that I do think Dr Mundell is an incredibly knowledgeable doctor. It's possible he is just a socially inept, cerebral type person.I don't think he's mean or that his intentions are anything but good. He's likely just awkward, but enough that I am too uncomfortable for a return visit despite the fact that my dog is better than he's been since the onset of these problems two years ago. The treatment Dr Mundell prescribed IS working. It involves an anti-biotic to rid my dog of a generalized Staph infection which is the cause of the bumps on his face & rear, etc an anti-fungal pill which will rid him of the yeast infections responsible for the red ears and feet in addition to a foot spray,an ear cleanse and an ear ointment. It's an in-depth regime but I am willing to do whatever it takes for my dog to be healthy and it looks like he is on the way. Unfortunately we probably do need the allergy testing to treat the core issue of my dog's problems as staph and yeasts are usually secondary to allergies. But we will have to go elsewhere for that. read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Mundell and his staff. The office is simple, clean and quiet and Dr. Mundell is knowledgeable and alway takes his time when meeting with you. When my cat Julian was scheduled for a biopsy and I had to cancel his staff was very accommodating and when I finally went in for the biopsy today Dr Mundell decided that the infection was in recession and that a biopsy probably would not give us a good sample and it was probably best to wait and charged me only for the office visit. Again, he also answered all my questions. Dr. Mundell is a model for the way that all doctors should be. If your creature has a dermatological problem he is the only doctor to consider. I would give six stars if I could read more

I have recieved only excellent care from animal Dermatology Service for my dachshund. Tha doctor and staff have always been respectful of my questions and concerns, and were helpful in considering ways to treat my dogs allergies while taking the expense into account. Treatment isn't cheap, but frankly working with a specialist never is. I always recommend Dr Mundell to friends that have a pet with a skin problem. He has helped two of my friends with their dogs skin problems. I had 2 dogs, Aussi/Border Collie brothers that had a terrible skin problem. I had wasted a lot of time and money going to the vets here on Vashon for a year, (every 3 weeks a different vet in the office would prescribe different amounts of antibiotics) trying to figure out a fix, with No good lasting results. I had heard about Dr Mundell from a friend and so I went in to Ballard to see if he could help. I was impressed that Alan spent a full hour with my dogs, looking them over and listening to all we had gone through trying to find a remedy to their terrible skin rashes. Dr Mundell saved my dogs from a terrible life of unending discomfort, non stop itching and scratching. I ended up needing to give the dogs a shot every 2 weeks and the recovery was almost instant. Being competitive to be the one to do what I asked of the boys, and very smart, giving the shots was easy. As soon as I would go to get the bag with the needles and the medicine from the fridge they would sit down, facing away from my chair..... so I could give them a shot. Dr. Mundell came very highly recommended by my vet, so I decided it was time to pony up and figure out what is causing my dog's misery. I called to make my appointment, and the girl on the phone told me that they tested for all kinds of allergies with the intradermal test. I specifically asked if that included food allergies, and she said yes. I asked her what the cost would be, and she told me the price of the office visit and the intradermal test. Gulp. But okay... I will plan for that amount. I show up, and the doctor spends the first several minutes talking to me in great detail about his previous patient. Bizarre. Then, he proceeds to speak to me like I am a stupid teenager the entire time. I realize that I may look a little young, but I don't look that young (in my mid-30s), and I don't present myself as stupid or uneducated. After the test, he even suggested that I put a shirt on my dog if he starts scratching (ummmm, yeah - that's what I always do) and continued to suggest that I could borrow a shirt from my dad. Uh - WHAT?!?!? Then, the bill - more than 10% more than I was quoted on the phone, plus an outrageous cost for the two RX meds. Now, 12 days later, my dog is WAY worse. I will never go back. Furthermore, I encourage everyone to go elsewhere. They wanted $1,000+ per year for a treatment with a 60% success rate, and told me that to test for food allergies (NOT included in the intradermal test, as it turns out) they would do an elimination diet, and he ACTUALLY said to me, "But don't you go and try to do it on your own because you don't have access to the kind of quality food that I do." I have never felt so utterly swindled. read more
