I applied as a foster (never fostered a dog before) with AFRP in 2024. My experience was very good. I submitted an online application asking for a smaller dog and my preference for a poodle mix. They responded within a couple of days, as I recall, and asked a few more questions. After a few days, they contacted me with a possible match, explaining he was a senior poodle mix with a few medical issues. They work closely with Hitchcock Animal Services (county shelter) and had several dogs that had issues and needed a rescue with a strong foster program. They brought "Bernie" over, and I became a foster mom with full support from AFRP. They provided guidance and everything from beds/blankets to toys and even food! They provided the vet services to help Bernie be the best dog he could be. They invited me to various events (and even a TV spot!) to show off Bernie but unfortunately dogs with medical issues can be a little harder to get adopted. So after six months, I fell in love and became a "foster win" and adopted him. To this day, AFRP considers me part of their alumni family and invites me to activities such as local parades or fun events. They have a variety of dogs and cats, young to old, healthy to some having medical challenges, and work hand-in-hand with several shelters to help find fosters and ultimately final homes! I found their offices to be clean and functional, although if they were bigger, they could help more animals. I use Yelp frequently and know I make decisions based on reviews. I wanted to provide a positive and more recent outcome than some older comments which I feel are no longer applicable. The last note I will make is that as of 2024, they have new executive and support staff who are fantastic. So please consider discovering this great local rescue organization. AFRP have been around for a while but today, I find they are an excellent organization always improving on their processes and staff. So please GO FOSTER! It's fun, rewarding, and inexpensive. In 2019 I found the website for AFRP made an appointment to stop by and see the dogs that were on site and talk about having a visit with a possible dog in foster. I chose an adorable little dog named Oscar. Next was becoming "eligible", yes eligible, to take in a dog from a "rescue". A paid foster (her words) then brought Oscar to my home for me to meet and fall in love with. The foster mom was too busy on her phone and with her teenager to give me information. After waiting over a week for a response I was then told by a woman with AFRP I did not qualify! The AFRP inspector that had came over obliterated my house. Apparently there was nothing good about my house and a rescue couldn't possibly be homed here. A little bit about me; I am disabled and home 90% of my life. I decided to go to an actual rescue in Salinas, CA. Monterey County animal services. Where I was told I was an ideal candidate since I'm home all the time but perfectly fine to take care of a dog walks etc. I paid a total of $100 to Salinas Animal Shelter for my chosen dog (Piper) to have a full hysterectomy. Including putting a microchip and doing vaccines. After rescuing Piper I found out from Salinas Animal Shelter employees that AFRP procured all of the "most desirable" animals from Salinas Animal Shelter. Salinas Animal Shelter's requirements before adoption is spay or neuter microchip and vaccines before they will relinquish animals. Yet AFRP fees for me to "rescue" Oscar was over $300! They are not a rescue! They are a facility to purchase animals that have been procured from a shelter. I would never ever recommend AFRP to anyone and any person that mentions this facility I tell my story to. If you want to support a actual rescue go to Salinas Animal Shelter. Yes it's further away and far sadder than going to the plush AFRP site. Salinas Animal Shelter had puppies kittens senior dogs big & small. My dog is 9 pounds for those that say it's OK to buy a dog because small dogs are not in shelters. Since then I have had to lean on Peace Of Mind Rescue in Pacific Grove California. It would be impossible for me to give an adequate review. They have helped me financially, with Emergency temporary foster options and delivering & returning Piper to an emergency vet hospital for an MRI and spinal surgery several hours from my home. They are angels, please support Peace Of Mind Dog Rescue if you can! AFRP should not have the name rescue in their title. read more

Not even one star. i volunteered for AFRP for YEARS, since 2011. so many wonderful experiences and dedicated employees. AFRP is a shell of it former organization.i would never spend one second volunteering or donating to them. i had a foster dog, Drake, that I fostered for a year. He was a beautiful, loving, happy boy who had an "incident" with one of my cats. since last November 2024, Drake has been in a boarding facility. It is sad that this organization can't a foster home for this precious boy. this would have never happened three years ago. The staff and board obviously don't care. We brought in our two bonded kittens for a neutering appointment and one of them ended up showing an abscess on their chin after surgery. Today, my girlfriend and I came in with interest and left with a new pat pal. Again, the staff could not of been better. Took out each cat for us and knew them all very well. I filled out an application in early August of this year have left numerous voicemails with no call back, I called back 3 weeks ago and got a real live person who told me she would have someone call me ASAP, guess what, I have heard nothing. I lost my 13 year old dog to cancer earlier this year and was looking forward to adopting a new fur baby, I wanted to get a rescue who would love an amazing loving home, guess AFRP will NOT be the foster place I adopt from. I was warned by a few people to not bother with AFRP because of their reputation of never getting back to possible adopters. I am grateful these fur babies are in foster care but on the other hand if you have no intention on letting them go to wonderful people please stop advertising them. I adopted my first 2 (1 past away) cats here at AFRP Pacific Grove. It's a no kill rescue and all the animals that are here are lucky and loved by all the employees. My 2 (now 1) cats are seriously like dogs, they are so social and loving. Atari greets us with his belly up every day, actually multiple times a day. I highly suggest visiting this rescue if you are looking for a new non-human family member :). Btw - I hope that cute a$$ sweet dog was adopted by a good family :(. We tried to adopt a kitten and the foster didn't want to give it up. She said the litter had 'kitten diarrhea' for three weeks. Either she gave it poor nutritional care or just wanted an excuse to keep the kittens. They were never in touch. I do not recommend wasting time on AFRP. Upside, we got a wonderful kitten from SPCA, who was much more straightforward. So, we are glad AFRP was so difficult because it led us to our sweet kitten in our beautiful tree-lined home. Here's what Linda from AFRP wrote(we never heard back, hope the kittens are okay) Thanks for your interest in adopting Miss Grey. Unfortunately Miss Grey and her siblings have all developed some kitten diarrhea, and our vet is working with them to resolve the problem. When I entered the building, the two volunteers/employees at the front desk saw me but did not acknowledge me. They were in the middle of their conversation and turned their backs at me to continue talking. They proceeded to walk towards the back of the building and continued to ignore me. The other employee/volunteer grooming the cats looked at me as she took care of the cats and also did not greet me whatsoever. None of them asked if I needed any help. I basically stood there and looked at them. She followed the other two's lead and ignored me. I stood there until the first two employees/volunteers came back. They did not come back to the front desk until someone else came into the building. On another day, a woman named Sue, a foster parent, seemed reluctant to let me pet one of the dogs. She kept coming up with all these excuses of why I should not adopt/foster any of the dogs, especially the ones that I was interested in. I threw in a few lies to see if she would follow my lead and continue making up excuses for why I should not adopt/foster, and sure enough... she had excuses galore coming out of her ass. When an older woman around her age approached her, she disregarded me and gave her full attention to this older woman. She even asked impatiently "Alright.. Are you done with the dog now?!". Sue and the employees/volunteers are supposed to positively and professionally represent AFRP. read more

I adopted my sweet little dog after looking at the website. I worked with Darla who was fostering the puppy. I completed the application and Darla responded the next day and set up a meet and greet. My dog was born without a leg, so Darla made a home visit to make sure our yard, house and family would be a good environment for a tri-pawd. My puppy and I bonded instantly. I complete the adoption process at the Pacific Grove adoption center. I appreciated how kind and excited they were for both me and my puppy. The obedience class they set up was wonderful and so was the vet recommendation. I have now had Buckaroo for 10 months and she is perfect. I have had many occasions to run into Mariah who works at the adoption center, and she always greets me and Buckaroo with warmth and enthusiasm. I found the entire experience to be wonderful, I appreciate their background and home checks, as it is important to make a good match. I did not think they asked for anything that should not have been asked for, and in my opinion the process was smooth and not stressful for me or Buckaroo. These people do not return any calls. People always say adopt from your shelters and rescue places but all these places make it impossible to do that. How hard is it to pick up a phone to say sorry that dog you asked about and applied for who is still on our page waiting to be adopted for the past 3 weeks is not a good fit for you or is possibly being adopted from another family. Covid is no excuse to make a phone call. This is why people like myself end up going to a breeder because these people make it impossible for you to adopt a dog and just refuse to even call you back after saying were going to review your application and give you a call back after you have to call them. These poor dogs could be in homes already but these people refuse to let that happen. Need them donations apparently more than finding the dogs a loving home. read more

AFRP is a truly special and amazing organization. We were so blessed to find our Border Collie at their facility ( via a web search) and they made the entire adoption process easy to follow, yet they were extremely through in insuring that our dog's new home was safe, stable and deserving of one of their Rescue animals. I would have expected nothing less from this dedicated team of animal professionals and animal lovers whose goal is to find loving home for every animal they care for. We were also blessed to have our dog so very well trained by one of the fantastic Re-Housing volunteers (she's a professional dog trainer) who also provided us a folder of valuable information on successfully transitioning our dog to a new home. In addition, the email and phone communication after we got our new family member settled into her new life is another reason why AFRP is so special. They change up their policies to fit their own needs, not the animals. It appears they get a charge out of playing "Puppy God". I think they must seek out their own contacts to give their friends first shot at animals, because they certainly are not consistent in their so-called screenings. Some volunteers need to brush up on people skills...maybe better training before the are allowed to represent the AFRP?

My family and I visited this adoption center in Pacific Grove yesterday and were disappointed by their complete lack of customer service. (After we left I checked Yelp to see if we had an unusual experience and quickly realized that we were not the only ones with the same impression.) When we entered the center, there were several staff members, but we received no welcoming greeting...no one acknowledged us whatsoever. How much effort would it take to say, "Hi! Welcome...please let us know if you have any questions.". Nothing...we felt invisible. We spent a few minutes looking at the dogs and were about to walk into the cat enclosure when I heard a woman behind me who was sitting on the floor rudely say, "we start with an application before entering the cat enclosure." What?? I have to fill out an application BEFORE I even look at the cats? No thank you. My family and I looked at each other in disbelief and left the center. Again, no one said goodbye or thanked us for coming in. I do agree with the other reviewers that someone must be training the staff to be rude, condescending and unwelcoming so that is a direct reflection of whoever is managing this center. Do they have such an overabundance of qualified adopters that they can be so unwelcoming and rude in both their staff and policies? I would highly encourage anyone who is seeking to adopt an animal to visit and support another adoption center that is friendly and allows some interaction with the animals (like Pet Friends in Hollister). We will not be supporting this center. read more

My husband and I have gone a few times because we have been searching for a pet to adopt. One volunteer is a younger guy who seems to be helping with the cats every time we go, he's incredibly friendly. On the other hand there is another woman who's always there, longer dark hair with gray in it, on the thin/average side and she has always been very passive aggressive and unhelpful every time we have been. Ignores anyone who walks in the door and even talks very condescendingly to other volunteers. Choosing and animal to adopt is a serious decision and we want to make sure the cat or dog would fit into our home. We weren't going to adopt an animal we weren't sure about and she made sure to tell us multiple times we could not take any animals out of their cages unless we were planning to adopt. How would we know unless we actually got to interact with them? We've been 3 times hoping to find an animal that clicked with us and every time she's made it an uncomfortable experience. read more

I volunteer here, so I admit I'm a bit biased. But hey, I had to have liked the place enough to even want to volunteer here! If you're looking to adopt a new pet, don't forget to check AFRP. Yes, their adoption fees tend to be a bit higher than some of the shelters, but don't let that deter you. They put a lot of work into their animals. In my opinion, the greatest thing about AFRP is that they often know quite a lot about their animals, and are able to share that information with you so that you can make the right fit for your family. Many other shelters don't know anything about the animals or don't have a method available to share that information. Check AFRP's website to see their animals. Most of the dogs live with foster families so follow the instructions if you would like to meet one. There are usually a few dogs at the adoption center on any given day, but don't expect to be able to meet very many. The adoption center in PG and Posh Pets in PG are the prime locations to see cats in person. Cats are also available at Petsmart, and there are even more cats living with foster families that you'd need to set up an appointment to visit. The PG adoption center is open Tue-Sat from 1-5, and you're welcome to visit even if you just want to pet some cute cats. No pressure! Insider tips: -The best way to contact AFRP other than their website is to visit the PG adoption center. Nobody answers their main phone line, and while they return messages, it may not be as fast as you'd like. -They usually have tons of kittens in the spring and summer but because they get adopted so fast, they're not put on their website. I adopted a solid black german shepherd from them. Johnny Cash is awesome! He's gentle with all beings, including my two young children. He did not do well at the shelter and was deemed unadoptable. I've been a volunteer for AFRP at the Santa Cruz location for almost 2 years. I just have to address the concern over the adoption pricing. I know $150 does seem like a lot for a kitten, but let me assure you, every single cent and more goes directly to pay our veterinary expenses. While most of the cats we help are perfectly healthy, there are many who need major surgeries or other health care on top of the basic costs of food, shelter, spay/neuter, shots, etc. As a pet owner myself, I spent much more than $150 on each of my pets when I adopted them once all the vet expenses were added up. AFRP is the real deal. At the Santa Cruz location we focus primarily on the local cat population and work closely with the county shelter to make sure no cats have to be euthanized just because there's no space available for them. All of us are volunteers and continue to help where we can because we love the animals and the organization. read more

I adopted my two dogs from AFRP and i could not be happier. My new dog Mickey was a stray that had been hit by a car and would have been killed if it had not been for AFRP. He had a broken pelvis and other injuries. That was not the end of it after they took care of his medical needs no one adopted him. AFRP had him for 11 months and paid for all of his care. They do so much and save so many medical pets that would otherwise die.......This is the big difference between them and the SPCA who only take "adoptable" animals....AFRP take the un-adoptable ones and finds a new life for them. When I see my two little guys at the dog park or enjoying a car ride with their head out the window i am grateful to AFRP. I love this place. AFRP helped us start our family! I stopped by to look at the cute dogs. They were all wonderful, but none of them tugged at my heart strings in a way that made me shout "THAT'S MY DOG!" I was turning to leave when one of the foster moms walked in with two AFRP dogs to visit the main office. I met Dusty, fell in love with his doggy kisses, and he was home with us the next day. We named him Buster, and now we are a very happy family. AFRP and his foster mom told us everything there was to know about him, and every new pet owner receives a complimentary physical with a vet in the area. They take the adoption process very seriously, even conducting a home visit, which I really appreciated. Like some have said, their fees are a little high, but they really do take care of the animals. If you are looking to adopt, remember that they have a lot of pets in foster homes. Check their website to see all of the different dogs and cats that are with foster parents. They will arrange for a place and time to meet. Love the passion behind what they do--but a bit overly particular and unresponsive. I want to preface this by saying I attempted multiple times to adopt a dog from AFRP a year and a half ago. Multiple Calls. Emails. Applications. The works. I had not received any word back once regarding any of the dogs I applied to meet. Thankfully, I did find my soul dog at a shelter out in Fresno and am grateful to have had our fates connect. She is a blessing and I'm grateful that things turned out how they did. However, recently after much thought and consideration, my partner and I decided we were in a good place in all the ways to welcome a second dog into our home. I once again applied to meet a dog up for adoption with AFRP weeks ago, as we are both locals, and just as before, radio silence. Like I mentioned, I commend this establishment's passion to adopt their dogs to the perfect home. But I do believe the people here are a bit too choosy. And the lack of response is most upsetting. I've discussed with other locals and their experience with AFRP and many have had similar experiences as well. It's unfortunate because I know that I as well as many others are very much fit to adopt to. And it saddens me that we have been disregarded like before. Their site says they love to play matchmaker, but I'm not sure how that is accomplished with not a word back to the inquiring families. Please take this criticism constructively, AFRP. I absolutely love and fully support the AFRP! We adopted a Siamese kitten from them last year, and he was perfect! The AFRP can really help you find the right pet for your family, because they spend the time to get to know their animals. Unlike most shelters (or pet stores), the people at AFRP can tell you anything you want to know about your pet, like if your pet will get along with other animals or children living in your household, if they are really active or quiet and shy, even what their favorite toys or things to do are. This ensures you will be adopting an animal that will work well for you and your lifestyle. Perhaps even more importantly, the amazing people at AFRP are truly committed to their animals, which means they will take care of them regardless of any medical or emotional issues they may have, and they will do everything possible to make every animal healthy and adoptable. They are a no-kill rescue shelter, so you know if you have to surrender your pet, (like so many people have to do now with houses being foreclosed and people losing their jobs), you know it will be taken care of and given every opportunity possible to find its "forever home." The adoption fees are a little higher than most local shelters, ($150 compared to $50-$125), but the money goes to spaying/neutering the animal, giving them all appropriate vaccinations/shots, microchipping, (so if your pet is ever lost, you are more likely to find him/her), as well as a free wellness exam at local vets. We also received a coupon booklet for free kitten food, and discounts on everything from cat carriers to litter to toys good at PetCo. Also, many of their pets are fostered, so they are already house/litter-box trained, and are used to human interaction and are really sociable. I would definitely recommend looking at AFRP first if you are looking for a new pet. They have lots of animals listed on their website, and they have lots more at their adoption center in Pacific Grove, (lots of kittens, too, who are usually not listed on their website since they are adopted out so fast). read more

We adopted a sweet four legged boy named Scooby who is doing just great in our household! He joins his big brother Tiko who we also got from an adoption five yrs. ago. Scooby was very shy but is really coming in to his own, playing with us and Tiko. He knows this is his forever home. Smart little guy. AFRP is a great organization to support and adopt from as these pets need loving homes. Martina was great to work with and you can tell she really has her heart in it and was a fantastic foster mom. I've reached out to UAF a few times for help with food for my cats when I was completely out & didn't have the financial resources to buy more till my social security came in & have been ignored every single time. Yet, they consistently come to the rescue of a relative in the same trailer park, even though she's an irresponsible pet owner & hoards the food each month from their pet food bank. I'd like to know why there seems to be an unprofessional, unethical attitude toward my needs over hers here in Arizona! read more
