My partner and I love establishments like this, so we immediately had to go in. Upon entering, there's a large selection of clothing and accessories. The back room was much bigger, displaying furniture, art pieces, room decor, books, toys, and other trinkets. All the items were fairly-reasonable priced, and the cashier was very friendly. read more

I love this place! I donate and shop here regularly. The volunteers who work here are the friendliest folks around, and I always find something cool and unique to buy. I've never seen anything overpriced so I'm not sure that the negative reviews for this place are correct. Maybe they are confused, as there are many different benefit & antiques shops near each other. And besides, they are BENEFIT SHOPS for NON PROFIT ANIMAL RESCUE. Those people posting emotional reviews should be ashamed. AFRP does really important work in our community and I'm so grateful they're around. read more

I am a long time Monterey resident and I have been shopping at the AFRP store for a decade. That being said I was shocked when I went to the store today and nine out of 10 items that I picked up were over $125. As we know the Shop is getting all the items for free by donation. Out of the goodness of people's hearts in our community donates. In inquires and the workers told me this store is under new management. Apparently they've decided to increase the prices by hundreds of percentage points. I am truly disappointed to see this type of greedy mentality. I'm so curious to know where is all this money going? What are they paying these new management members that are running this business? Very truly disappointing to see a store that caters to members of the community that may not have the income levels to shop at a new department store having sky high prices guess inflation hits everywhere!!!! read more

The front is all pet items so make sure you head to the back to find clothing and household items. The place is a little small but the people there are friendly and they feature a pet of the month on the board behind the counter. There is parking out front on the street and make sure you look carefully for the sign. read more

Shop is clean and beautifully displayed. I found treasures here at nice prices many times. All sorts of things come in, good to check often. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Pets welcomed. The donations to the shop are for rescued pets. So many are saved by this organization. I have seen customers adding significant extra donation over and above the fairly stated price. I love this shop so much, and it's nice to know all proceeds go to help rescued animals from the S.P.C.A. and Salinas Shelter on Hitchcock rd. Find fosters and forever homes.The money does so much good, and I love the fine array of various dishware, pet supplies, books, wonderful jewerly, clothing and shoes and whatever else you happen to find. I made a special trip all the way from San Jose to donate here and I'm so glad that I did. Karen was extremely personable and of course while I donated quite a bit I also found 2 beautiful handmade tables that I had to have. The asking price was very low and the tables were signed by the maker. It is my pleasure to continue making the short drive to Pacific Grove to visit and donate here. They do great work rescuing and I am happy to help since I have 3 rescued animals and they are my best friends! read more

The merchandise is decent and the store is clean. I used to go frequently but they've gotten a manager who is quite rude. She walks around the store huffing and puffing rolling her eyes and scolding the staff. I love to donate to this cause but if she continues to work there I may have to opt out. read more

This was a really cute thrift shop! I haven't been to one like this since I use to live in Davis. There is a lot of dog decor which is very fitting since its an AFRP focused. I'd love to come again especially since the cost of items were very affordable. read more

I've been a loyal supporter of this thrift store for the past four years, frequenting this one over the countless others in the Monterey Bay area the four times a year I visit my in-laws in PG. The past six months though have become unbearable because of a volunteer who treats us as if we were criminals each time we enter the store. One of our treats has been to buy the nearly expired sourdough for $1 each time we visit, and the morning of October 21, that same volunteer, gave me the usually icy glare and accused my partner of trying to buy the bread in a dishonest manner. She said "I know what you're doing" in an accusatory manner and refused to sell her the bread since I had just bought two loaves. A sign above the bread indicates two loaves "per person" not "per household." I can only assume the volunteer must be homophobic if not also racist as we are gender queers of color. And to think we come to AFRP instead of the Christian thrift stores to avoid being treated with open animus and disrespect. I work for the state of California and make a civil servant's salary. Being able to buy a gourmet $5 loaf of sourdough for $1, even if it's expired, is one of the ways I can continue to live in expensive California where I was born. To add insult to injury the same volunteer took out the only loaf of rosemary garlic for herself as soon as the delivery arrived without paying $1 and then joked about just throwing two of the loaves in the garbage since they weren't the ones that she liked. Shame on you for taking the best loaf for yourself, making jokes about throwing away food that you could sell for $1, and then refusing lower income folks the ability to buy the very bread that is donated to you. Change your sign AFRP to limit the purchase of your bread to "2 per household" if that is indeed the case and give your volunteers some sensitivity training. Afterall it will be us, young folks of color, who will be changing your diaper when you are too old to spend all your free time volunteering instead of working for minimum wage. read more

I visited this store for the first time a couple of days ago. I found the volunteers there very pleasant and always asking to help me. I found a few items that I purchased at great prices. Wow, I'm only the 2nd reviewer? Surprised that more reviews haven't been written. Anyhow, recently, my husband and I shopped here on a whim as we were looking for the Pacific Grove library and stumbled upon this little Treasure Shop. It was well decorated (with Christmas decor) and inviting in their shop windows. We wandered in and was just looking around. We always like thrift stores that do not smell badly. This one was nice and clean, smelled fine, and a cute little dog "worked" there too. The volunteers who assisted us were helpful. We didn't really find anything we need or want there, but the greeting card selections were good (I like to buy cards just because) for 50 cents each and there were a lot of knicks knacks and whatnots that were all interesting. The prices were mostly reasonable. Some of the items were kind of on the expensive side seeing they're all used stuff, but it's for a good cause so I can see paying more than what something is worth just to help the AFRP out. Hubby found this History of the World dvd that he's been kind of wanting and it's not that easy to find (or is expensive if new) so he got it for $4 + tax, so that was a little "treasure" found. =) Nice people, interesting stuff, great cause, check it out! PS - They do accept credit cards but prefer if you spend $10 to use it (they probably just want to keep the fees low for their org). read more

Wow, $17 for an old 5 slot cornbread tin? I don't need my cornbreads to be shaped like little cobs that badly. $3 for a used half empty bottle of nail polish? wow... While I completely support the cause and would gladly just DONATE money to animal rescues, the thrift shop isn't helping the animals with such unrealistic prices on most of their items. I hate to say it but I had to take my business to the numerous other thrift shops in the area for better prices and selections. Despite being a shop that supports the rescue of animals, the items in this shop are overpriced and they don't even reflect the spirit of charity. The shop lacks proper arrangement and is slightly chaotic. Most of the items aren't attractive or worth-considering. There is one great thing about this place however. A person comes by ever once in a whole to donate fresh bread that the shop sells for one dollar. People who shop at the store might enter and find that amazing loaf of bread for simply one dollar. You may not find amazing treasures at this place, but if you are in town and love thrift shops, you might want to add this one to the bottom of your list. Who knows, you might find something that you like if you look really hard. If you find the sour bread, get it. Make sure you have some butter in the fridge to spread on it. Delicious!!!! read more

Well, AFRP recently moved to the Posh Pets site...so sad they are gone ;-( though AFRP is certainly a great cause and I know their budget must be minimal, though Jane Rowland is a very shrewd lady and tends to price things on the high side...she has done an amazing job for years here...first with the SPCA thrift store....BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE REPLACED THE CARPETS BEFORE THEY MOVED IN BECAUSE THEY REEK!!!!!!!!!!! VERY BADLY! ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE TO GET DOWN LOW TO LOOK AT THINGS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN!!! And it can't be too healthy to breath all that animal pee smell???? So they were so careful designing a lovely shop but forgot the foundation is the most important thing!!!! It just permeates everything and eventually will affect the merchandise. I really love this store! They have all kinds of great finds from artwork, jewelry, clothing, to kitchen and pet goodies! Its jam packed so you will need some time to find all the deals! I like this place ( yes it has moved a lot) because it is good sized and reasonably well "filtered"- they don' t throw junk on the floor and say its worthy of purchase. Someone is minding the store. And its around the corner almost from the place where the animals for adoption are. You can't go there and not want to support the cause by buying here! read more
