I was referred here by Wild Birds Unlimited. I came in with my husband and son. We brought our Quaker Parrot along to check out some birds. This place is well stocked. There were some birds in the front of the store. Lots of Parakeets! Our bird enjoyed hearing them all chirping and even squawked back! The staff here were super friendly and helpful. Absolutely awful place. Went here when I was a kid with my parents to find a pet rat, and the person who was showing us the rats dropped one, and he tried to stomp on it with his boot right in front of us. It ended up getting away, no idea what happened to it. Other animals are often crowded, overheated, out of water, or lethargic. Place is very dark with cramped hallways and dirty floors, very unclean. Wouldn't be surprised if people can get sick from breathing here. read more

This place is the real deal! Don't go in expecting it to be like a chain store or big box retailer, this is a local establishment with an amazing amount of stock and very, very knowledgeable staff! I was visiting from LA and had a conversation with Dale, the store owner (I was visiting family in Corvallis). He proudly showed his rare species, some even breeding in the tanks! Plants are plentiful, some that Dale grew in his own greenhouse. He even had a filter impeller I couldn't find anywhere in Southern California nor online! I worked many (many) years ago at a similar business, plus I frequent several LFS (local fish stores) in my area. Animal House is one of the more impressive stores I've ever visited. Once again, you can save a couple of dollars online or at a chain, yet local businesses offering the services provided by Animal House need to be supported. This so called "pet store" is nothing but animal neglect. I feel so bad for the animals because of th conditions they are living in. They hardly ever have food and water. They put multiple adult rats in small fish tanks with no ventilation. Their cages are disgusting. They sit and bake in the tanks due to no ventilation. I was ok with the fish. But those poor rats have to sit in the heat. This is not a safe place to be breeding rats for money. Absolute worst place to go to. You guys don't care about the animals! Just money. Please take better care of these poor animals. It's sad to see what they have to live in. Rats aren't meant to be kept in fish tanks due to having sensitive noses. read more

We have been customers for about 10 years and we have never had anything but good service. The store is located in an old house right on the southern end of downtown Corvallis. While the variety of birds, critters and fish are arranged in a bit of a maze like clutter, they are all healthy and happy. This is the best most reliable honest pet resource in Corvallis. When I wanted a singing canary the owner waited and called me when the right bird was available. That bird sang his heart out and then died peacefully 11 years later. I also buy the best healthy fish from this wonderful store. You won't go wrong going in and asking for advise. The store needs better air circulation and air purifiers everywhere. If a light shines into the building you can see the massive dust and who-knows-what cloud encompassing everything... very disturbing. You can tell first foot in the door how disgusting the air and smell is. I couldn't stay long inside for this exact reason. Whatever management prioritizes should be reevaluated to improve the customer experience especially the air that everyone and everything is breathing. If the atmosphere is gross why would one want an animal here let alone trust the employment?.. The only benefit to giving this place your business is that it's the only local pet store in town with a variety of animals. read more

Animal House is not my favorite pet place, but they do have qualities that make me come back. Sorry for the mostly fish based stuff, but I'm an avid aquarium owner so that's why I go in there. First the good stuff: -Good selection of fish, which is rare in smaller towns. -Older, larger fish for established tanks. It's nice to get adults that are already full size. -Decent knowledge of their products/animals. Now, for the bad: -Walk in and you'll see what's wrong with the joint. IT'S A HOARDERS DREAM! Seriously, floor to ceiling pets. No joke. It is so tight, so cramped, so incredibly dim and dingy that it's just plain uncomfortable to be there. -Unclean -Too many fish in the tanks. I have no idea how they stop their fish from dying. They have 20+ fish in a five gallon tank sometimes. It's just plain unsafe and inhumane for the animals. After discovering All For Fish in Albany, I don't go to Animal House except to trade in fish that aren't working out in my tank (only after trying to rehome them). I haven't had any fish I bought from Animal House die, but I still just don't like the conditions the fish are kept in. When I first visited 'The Animal House' years ago, I was somewhat skeptical. The house seemed a bit cluttered and I worried about the welfare of the animals being housed there. Over the years I began to understand that this place is like none other, and the animals are well taken care of. They offer many species of fish, there are reptiles, small mammals, and some birds. All of which are maintained in their own environment. What gets me most about this place is the staff. They care. They understand and are passionate for each and every animal they have. If you have any questions, they really know what they are talking about. I give four stars for the staff and for the availability and variety. It isn't easy maintaining so many animals and I genuinely feel that they do a great job. read more

This place is amazing. I bought a fish here yesterday after seeing almost all of the fish I wanted to buy at petco were covered in tiny white spots. The staff here is VERY knowledgable, offering me the best honest advice. He told me that if I was just starting my tank, I should start with one fish and let the bacteria grow in the tank before adding more. He also gave me great advice on which fish would get along well in my tank. I will most definitely continue to go here for my fish needs. I bought a Betta here, and he is the happiest most active betta I have ever seen. He is constantly swimming around and exploring his new tank, and his colors came out quite nicely (they change colors when they are not stressed). I guess I see why people think it is crowded, but there is an order to it. They are making great use of their space. The fish are all healthy and happy, and each tank has its own filter so the bacteria for that tank stays with that tank. I highly recommend it. Bought my betta for $2.98 I believe, their prices are very reasonable. read more

Good selection but sold an obviously sick fish to me and my girlfriend. The harlequin rasbora had a bulging stomach and most likely had an internal parasite. It died a few days later during treatment. A few of the other rasboras have clamped fins and will hopefully make it. Can't recommend on an ethical basis. read more

The animal house has cleaned up a lot recently. Although I feel frustrated about their reptile section, I do keep in mind that they have a high turnover rate. This is probably the only place in town you are going to find the exotic supplies you need if you own less common fish, reptile, and rodent species. They sell food in bulk for low prices. Morally, I have a hard time looking at the reptiles and fish without being unsettled, however in the past couple of months they have turned it around quite a bit. The employees and owner really do care about these animals, but they run it like a business- which isn't necessarily good for the animals yet is something that has to be done to stay running. I understand both sides, however it does irk me slightly. Overall, it's a small house with a lot of animals in it, and you'll find whatever you need or dale will order it for you. The reality of the fact is to keep margins up care is going to be less than you would administer if it was your pet. read more

I just had the worst experience I have ever had at a store, especially a pet store. I know in the pet business, as with any business, you have to walk a fine line between taking care of your customers, while still being able to keep a profit. However, many thriving business models understand taking care of your customers, often insures keeping a profit. Animal House completely lacks this knowledge, which perhaps explains their ever rising prices and excess stock. I purchased an Antilles Pink Toe (caribena versicolor) spiderling from Dale only a week ago, on July 31st. The spider, he assured, was a vicious eater, despite the several dead crickets in the deli container he had placed the spider with. I had done months of research prior to owning my first spider, and noticed the spider was looking off color and wobbly. I had a feeling something was wrong. But I ignored it, because I was so excited, and I was a long time customer of the store and I frequently came in to buy fish and mice. I spent $70 on this baby spider, which Dale said he did not accept returns on. I had this knowledge, and took the spider home. I had large enclosure set up, with substrate, proper arboreal conditions, a temp and humidity gauge, mister, food and tongs. I kept it in the deli container, though, because I didn't want to loose track of a sling. I offered the spider small pre killed crickets every three days and changed out old paper towels for humidity and cleanliness. The spider never once ate. It did not web. I was worried, but I wanted baby blue to live. I came home one day to see a massive hole in the spiders head. It was clearly dead, with a massive worm crawling out of its body. I was horrified, disgusted and sad. I called Robin at Animal House, and explained the situation. She said not to worry, that "Dale is a fair man" and that I was "in good hands". Dale called me the next day. He tersely stated that they do not do returns or exchanges. Dale accused me of lying, saying that it was obviously a maggot from a fly. I was feeling very sad at this point, and trying not to cry, I explained that I had him in the original enclosure, and he would know that there was no way a fly could have gotten in. He said it was probably from leftover crickets. I explained the spider never ate, and I cleaned all debris from the tank that was uneaten day of. Dale finally said "he's never heard of parasitism before", but parasites "weren't his fault", to which I replied that I do not blame them whatsoever. I did asked if I should bring in the container, but he didn't want to see the worm. He said he was busy and was not going to be in the store for much longer. He said not to bother brining it in. I never once asked for a refund from Dale. But, "being in good hands", I was hoping for perhaps $35 store credit, half of what I purchased, to get a new spider. I asked if maybe I could do an exchange for an older spider? He said no. In tears, I held it together enough to ask if I could maybe get 50% off of an older spider. He said he would be "losing profit". Dale had the audacity to try to sell me a new spiderling C. versicolor, for $90, but I could get $10 off. I politely said no thank you, have a good day, got off the phone- very, very upset. And cried. I was upset for various reasons. I spent $70 on a spider about the size of a nickel. But I was initially happy to do so, because trusted Dale and Robin and was a loyal customer. And I loved this little spider just as much as my pet snake, or any other pet I have. I was so hurt that Dale accused me of lying, when I witnessed a really gruesome death of my pet. I was so, so, so hurt that he did not show any empathy, or even offered me one of his old-stock tarantulas for a discount greater than $10- spiders which have been there for years. Animal House has lost my business. I love the staff at the local PetCo, so they really would be a better choice. That, and their iron-clad return policy. I even returned shrimp that have jumped out of my tank and died, with no receipt, and they kindly comforted me when I was sad and happily gave me new shrimp. They are so understanding and sweet and professional. Also, generally cheaper than Animal House, can you believe it. So, overall, let me caution you: Animal House lost my business, and certainly does not deserve yours. The only thing this store can guarantee its customers is a burnt bridge if you ever go to them for help. Don't for a moment believe you are in good hands- you are not. read more

This place is the nicest most unique pet store. They stock lots of supplies for all sorts of animals and I buy all my pond and Koi supplies there and have for 15 years or more. When I unexpectedly acquired an exotic bird, I had no idea how to care for him properly. Animal House was the first place I tried. The staff was very helpful and taught me the basics; however, I DREAD going there and try to avoid it as much as possible. It's so crammed with stuff and animals and it's very dirty. I would never buy bulk food from this business. The bird area (as big as a closet) is heartbreaking. There are multiple birds in cages that are too small. I don't recommend anyone surrendering a pet to this place. read more

You can barely walk in the store because it has too much stuff in it. The reptiles are in small tanks and are very dirty and they are very over priced. Animal House has a zoo of animals under one roof! The diverse group of animals they have will truly blow your mind. I sometimes just stop in to get inspired and discover new fish I have never seen before in the hobby....the owner always is happy to answer any question you may have about the animals. If you truly love animals, NEVER visit this place. The Animal House is awful! It's crowed, hot, dirty and very unsanitary. The birds are all crammed into little nooks and crannies and 1/2 of them don't get any natural light whatsoever. They don't give the birds fresh food, either! Just seeds. They obviously know nothing about how to properly care for parrots. Also, they've priced their birds at least 25% above what I can get from a good, qualified breeder and they don't handle their birds very often at all - some they never handle. The ONLY good thing about this place is the inexpensive parakeet food, but, really...you can mix your own if you just buy the individual seeds online and it's going to cost the same, if not less. If you don't want to mix your own, you can get 1lb of organic seeds from Totally Organics online for just $5.50. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

Took the Kid on a rainy day so she could get her eye-full of animals, and was amazed by the variety of species available; some fish species I haven't seen outside of major zoos, and some I had never heard of or seen before, in years of exploring, reading and visiting pet stores. I spent as much time in wonder as the Kid did. We had recently moved from Hawaii, and there were enough of the reef species found there (including soft corals) to make all of us homesick, in the best way... Was very glad to see the care given to all the animals in the store- not just by the owner, but by all the staff. Each and every tank, including the koi ponds outside, was crystal clear (which is hard to manage with just one or two, sometimes!), and the animals were in great health. In response to the Kid's obvious enthusiasm, the owner stopped what he was doing and took the time to encourage the interest, telling a little of his own story and emphasizing the necessary care involved- but with the joy he received from it very clearly communicated, also. Have been back several times, and purchased, as well. Highly recommended. read more

Owners Very knowledgeable and pleasant people and very helpful. They have many different varieties of fish and the prices are reasonable. I bought two long tail Congo tetra and three albino Congo tetra. My fish you're doing fine and I will be going back there again next month for some rainbows. I have been to this store a few times, I have no complaints about service. I have a 15 year old cat whose having a dew claw problem that is ok but needs to be addressed quickly. Their phone has had a busy signal for the last 24 hours. While they are close to my house I no longer drive and they're too far away for a 65 year old to walk to the store or pay for a cab to tell them to put the phone back in the cradle or whatever.
