Yesterday, a small Rat Terrier wandered onto our property looking as though it had been lost for…read moresome time and had not been properly cared for. Although we have two dogs of our own and a new baby at home, we took the dog in, fed it, bathed it, and kept it safe inside overnight while trying to locate its owners. Unfortunately, the situation became very stressful for our household. Our smaller dog was extremely anxious, and our 62-pound rescue dog was also stressed and beginning to show signs of aggression toward the unfamiliar dog. After 24 hours of caring for the stray and being unable to locate its owners, I brought the dog to the Humane Society, hoping they could take over its care and help reunite it with its family or find a safe outcome. What disappointed me was not the mission of the Humane Society, but the way I was treated during the intake process. Rather than feeling supported after doing my best to help a lost animal, I felt pressured and judged for not being able to continue fostering the dog. The gentleman assisting me seemed frustrated with my situation, even as I explained the challenges we were facing with our own pets and the fact that we have a baby in the home. My family has supported the Humane Society over the years through donations and advocacy, which made this experience especially disheartening. I understand shelters are often overwhelmed and resources can be limited, but a little compassion and appreciation for community members who step up to help lost animals would go a long way. We did everything we could to care for this dog for the time it was with us, and I left feeling unappreciated for those efforts. I truly hope this feedback is taken constructively, as I still believe in the importance of the Humane Society's work. I simply wish the interaction had reflected the same compassion toward people that they strive to show animals.

We fed it twice while it was trying to eat garbage. No one answered any of the phone lines today. Whoever owns this blond female dog does not deserve an animal.

Great experience start to finish, which was not at all what I expected. Our eleven-year-old…read moreAustralian Shepherd has laryngeal paralysis. Two days ago, she was in the yard which she fell, yelping in pain. Yesterday, she was lethargic which - if you have an Aussie - you know is wildly atypical. I thought the paralysis had taken its toll and we would have to put her down. Kathy made our appointment. She was empathetic and very helpful over the phone. When we arrived, the receptionist and the vet tech were each super nice and very professional. Dr. Gilson examined Tinkerbelle thoroughly. He explained the utility of each diagnostic and treatment option he recommended, and he quoted us the price. He found that she had fairly extensive osteoarthritis and recommended treatment. Our story had a happy ending because we arrived fearing it was time to euthanize and discovered our dog's problem was treatable. It's also a happy ending because, had it turned out it was time to let our dog go, I feel confident they would have handled that outcome with skill and compassion. Every interaction was excellent. We've had dogs for over 30 years, and we've had a range of experiences with veterinarians over the years. Retired, we now split time between Colorado and Alabama. When we are in Alabama, Dr. Gilson is our new vet and Theodore Veterinary Hospital is our new clinic.

Since we are both retired, we needed to know the price in advance. We were told that the basic package was $200 and that packages increased to almost $400 depending on what you wanted. We said we wanted the basic package for $200. Upon arriving with our dying family member and pet (Half-Pint), we asked to have her humanely put down and cremated only to be informed that the price of cremation was now $289 after being told just an hour before that it was $200. Not only that, they kept trying to sell us packages of up to $400 as we were grieving. We have been customers for over a year only to have them lie, deceive, and prey on us during this very emotional and painful time. I told them that this is not what we were told and we wanted the $200 basic package we were quoted. The technician said she understood and went to get the manager. While we were waiting, a second technician came in with the same options and also tried to sell us a more expensive package. The manager nonchalantly walked into the room where I had to explain everything all over again all while the dog lay there suffering. The manager said there was nothing she could do and that the girl up front had quoted the wrong price. I told her this was deceiving and we should not have to be dealing with this on top of losing our pet. She said, "What do you want me to do?" I said ,"Honor the price we were quoted." She said," I can't do that." As I left to get our vehicle, one of the girls at the front desk asked if everything was alright, I told her, in front of other customers standing there listening what was going on. The manager walked up and got in my face and said I needed to go that there were customers standing there listening and I told them they better leave if they didn't want to be lied to and deceived because you can't trust what these people tell you. Theodore Veterinary Hospital was going to charge us over $500 for euthanasia and cremation. We called our former vet in Baldwin County and they said they would take care of her. Their fee for the same procedure was under $400. They seemed more concerned with what we were going through with losing a member of our family. I was left with not being there for my family because I had to take my 89 year old mother to the doctor that morning so I could not be there for my wife or my pet and family member when she was put to sleep. This stressful situation with Theodore Veterinary Hospital caused my heart condition to act up as they were only interested in making as much money as they could off of our distress and pain of losing our family member "Half-Pint".
