I adopted a kitten on 11/29/24 named Dak. We did change his name to Niko as he was only 8 weeks old. He was so well adjusted to his new home and his big brother Maverick, our Great Dane immediately! The shelter was immaculate, people were so caring and loving towards the pets there. We are so in love with Niko and truly enjoy his personality! I would highly recommend AWA for anyone looking to save a pet and give them the wonder life they deserve! Hmmmmm. Conflicted about this place. On one hand, they do a lot of good for the animals. They are cheaper than the vet, and provide full services. (I got both of my dogs fixed there when they were pups, and just recently came to get them shots.) They must care about their mission, and the animals.... On the other hand, it feels like they don't give a singular shit about the animals! Usually vets, or any place that caters to animals, are filled with super, overly animal loving types, fawning over the pooches and kitties and iguanas or whatever that come through the doors. Every single person I encountered on my latest trip seemed like they couldn't have cared less about animals, and the one lady even gave off a vibe like she was scared of my dog in particular. (A Jack Russell.) Like I said, I was there for shots, and 1) they "ran out" of K9 influenza shot when I got there, and told me it was backordered for months, so.....tough luck there, and 2) HAND ON THE BIBLE, they had each of my dogs for maybe 45 seconds in a back room, before bringing them back out. Did they even give them the shots?! They asked NO questions, checked no paperwork, (I brought their shot records, in case they were, you know, concerned in any way,) and let me see exactly zero of what went on. I GET IT.....they are moving as fast as possible, to see as many dogs as possible, but it FELT like an assembly line. No compassion. No pleasantries. No sense that there was any joy in them helping the animals they must love, if they are doing this job. It was all very sterile. And it wasn't exactly cheap.....yes, it was almost definitely less than you would pay if you went to your regular vet, but for 2 shots for each dog, (bortadella and lepto each) it was about $150. I had back to back appointments, 3:08, and 3:12....so for those 8 minutes I was allotted, it works out to $1,125/hour. It's a nice option to have, but not sure it's a BETTER option than a regular vet visit. read more

I've had the pleasure of adopting multiple cats at the AWA, and both times I've been able to take home the best 4 legged friend possible. I have absolutely no bad things to say about this shelter. I heard about this from a coworker. After having a bad experience with another store, I was eager to find a better one and luckily I did. It was a bit of a drive to get there and the rental car's cleaning fee after kind of left me a bit irked but granted Bonnie is a medium haired dog so she did shed a bit. The facility itself was so well run. They had adoption counselors, greeters, dog handlers, and dog walkers. They even have a pet clinic where they will perform microchip surgery as well as other necessary procedures. They give you an entire run down of the 2 pets you choose to see. I wish I could have seen more. There were so many but I understand why only 2. They have you spend supervised time with the dogs on a leash and the person I was assigned to to guide me through the adoption process was Lauren. This girl was so knowledgeable about dogs and their behavior, I was so impressed. You can tell she really loves what she does. Additionally she took the time to teach me some things. It was between two dogs. Pete, a golden retriever mix or Bonnie a Labrador retriever mix. I felt like Bonnie and I had a really good connection and she was very sweet and friendly. Pete was too but he was more astute. I wanted to have a dog that would be a good form of emotional support as well as be a good watchdog and cuddler and Bonnie is just that. She is quite the chewer and I'm getting used to having a medium to large sized dog in my life as my entire life growing up we had smaller dogs but I always knew I wanted a bigger dog. Perhaps it was the Airbud movie effect. It was a movie about a golden retriever named Airbud who helped a kid play basketball. Anyhow, the AWA is a place I highly recommend if anyone is looking to adopt a rescue dog. Dogs from breeders are just as important but I just feel that shelter dogs (especially who run the risk of being euthanized) deserve to be placed in a happy home just as much. Yes they may not be purebred, but there hearts are just as pure if not more so and they are so loyal to you. Bonnie is quite rambunctious and is still getting used to being on a leash and going for walks but she definitely loves to snuggle and curl up in bed with me which makes me feel safe and protected. I feel grateful that the AWA allowed me the chance to adopt Bonnie as she has truly been a light in my life. They also have cats there too and I would love to adopt one of those in the future because I am a huge cat person, kind of like how TSwift loves cats. Yeah, I'm like that. I just more so wanted a dog because they make good companions and ESAs. Note though you may have to wait a bit between the 2 dog visits and be sure to get there before 4pm because they close adoptions at that time but they do do same day adoptions and offer training classes both group and private. I had signed up but then decided it would be too costly to go up and back from Philly in a Rental or Lyft so I foregoed attending the trainings and will look for one closer to where I live, but honestly I feel so grateful I adopted Bonnie there. I feel like the have me the best gift (at a cost of course), but the time Lauren spent to teach me and also provide resources to me was much appreciated. She's going to go far. I can tell. Recently my family and I went here with our dog because we had no other option. Our dog was sick and needed surgery. We were quoted over $8000 to get the surgery. If we did not get it done our dog, who was only over a year old, would have passed away since she wasn't eating. The only other option we were given was to take her back here. We were forced to surrender her and immediately the lady at the front desk was calling her by the name the shelter gave her and not by the name that she knows. She wasn't the nicest and was telling our family something completely different from what the clinic told us. We found another animal hospital that was fantastic and actually affordable to take her to the next day.HR was no help at all. I called and so did a few of my family members and no answer. When we finally got a hold of someone and she was completely rude. We did what we thought was right because we wanted our dog to live. If we would have kept our dog here they said she wouldn't have gotten the surgery until Friday, but we weren't allowed to know any updates or anything. So who's to say our dog would have gotten the surgery even though this is a "no kill shelter". We got our dog out the next day thanks to the help of the other animal hospital we took her too. She got the surgery and was home the same night. Safe to say I will never adopt another animal from here because of the lack of empathy from the staff there. read more

The woman who called me to tell me they screwed up my adoption was heartless and rude. I gave them " hold " fees twice yet they still gave my adoption to someone else because of their error. Had such a pleasant experience at AWA. Made my appointment online and filled out an application for a cat. Went in and was taken right back to meet any cat we liked, and the associate helping us (Katie), could not have been more patient and kind. She let us have some time to talk about our decision since we could only pick one, and she turned us right over to Kelly who made the adoption process so simple. They did the blood test right then and there to make sure our new kitty was ready to leave, and gave us so many supportive documents and information on what's next. However, upon taking her to the vet within a week, we found out that the shelter had not dewormed her and they had overlooked a level 5 heart murmur. For those not in the know, there are 6 levels of heart murmur. We love our cat, but these are costs that we are going to incur that we were not aware of SIMPLY BECAUSE this establishment was woefully negligent. What if we didn't adopt her? How would she be faring now? By comparison, we adopted a second cat from PetSmart--dewormed, perfectly healthy, accurate vet records. we came in with our family after donating 13+ comforters and blankets for the dogs, we went in to see the dogs because every other shelter I have gone to has always been welcoming especially when we are giving our support- we asked to see one of the dogs and we got a rude response (not sure if it's because I'm early 20s) (I was with my elderly grandmother n siblings as well) but it felt discriminating and instead of saying yes or anything we got immediately questioned which seemed in disgust "um is someone always home in your house?" "Uh do you have other dogs?" Yes, and yes ? "Well fill out questions and a survey first" --- in the rudest tone... what does that have to do with just asking to see the dog? I don't like to write reviews like this but if your dogs are kept up all day and night in cages and getting support from locals to your community the attitude can be saved for your out of work hours! This Saturday I visited the Animal Welfare Association to look at some of the dogs from the website. When I arrived the front desk people were friendly and pointed you towards the animals you wanted to look at, either dogs, cats, or small animals. The staff gives you some space to look around by yourself and isn't pushy at all. But they did make themselves very available for questions. Volunteers are all over the facility and can give you additional details on the pets you are looking at. All of the dogs have an inside/outside area and visitors are allowed to walk inside and outside to look at the dogs. Each cage has a summary of the dog attached, giving the age and a personality description. After I found the dog I wanted, I asked a staff member for a meet and greet, which they were happy to do. They also mentioned that there were no strings attached, and I did not need to feel obligated to adopt. The meet and greets were held in a caged outside area, and the dog was allowed to roam free. The staff member does stay with you. The actual adoption process was very simple. The AWA required that you have a collar, leash, and tags- you can buy all of it there for about $20. The adoption fee for my dog was $150 because she was older than six months. After filling out some paper work, the staff preps the dog and answers any questions you might have. The process takes about 45 minutes and was very easy. read more

We have adopted a puppy and young cat from the AWA in the past 6 years. Both times we had a fairly positive experience. It can be a bit hectic, but it seems like the place is staffed largely by volunteers. Haven't used the clinic services, so can't comment on that end. What I like most is that they let you spend as much time as you need to pick the right animal. This includes bringing the animals out of the cages, letting you spend time alone with the dogs in a designated room & giving you as much background information as possible. Staffers last weekend on a very busy Saturday went out of their way to help us decide which cat would do best in our multi-child/large dog household. They even pulled a paper file to look up foster notes on our eventual pick to make sure Rainy would be a good fit and vice-versa. The interview process was a bit disorganized, but they were so busy that you couldn't really complain. Plus in June & July, the cat adoption fees were half-price, including spay/neuter and all shots etc. read more

We took 5 kittens that we had domesticated to the Animal Welfare Association when other shelters were turning us away. We kept the momma cat that was a stray in our neighborhood, but couldn't keep the kittens. We were so appreciative, that they would put us on a waiting list, this would give us time to get the kittens domesticated and we also got them a vet check and their first shots as well as dewormed. When we got the call to bring the kittens in the staff could not have been any nicer and the facility is spotless. I was able to watch on line the progress of the kittens getting their forever homes. They all were neutered and or spayed immediately. The first kitten was adopted within 4 days and the last kitten adopted out prior to being there for 2 weeks. It made my husband and myself feel good that we were able to have these sweet kittens get homes and not become feral cat's living out surviving on their own. Their momma now has been spayed and is with us forever. She is such a sweetheart that someone had released to live on her own, as she was not feral when she showed up at our door. read more

I'm torn between 3 - 4 stars w/ this one. What they are all about - giving back and sliced pricing pushed it to the 4! We took Jack for a heart worm check and new supply of pills. I was #40 for my, well, my dog's turn (ie - ticket on my clip board) and they were on #25 - a looong wait, esp w/ lil Mister who was on barking patrol this particular day. I enjoyed looking at the variety of dogs that came in for their vaccines, micro chips and other services that the AWA provides but overall, it's like a chop shop in there and my head was spinning. Props for having paper towels and lots of sanitizer on tap! We walked out of there spending $50 for Jack's heart worm test (negative - whew!) and a 6 mo supply of the h.w. pills. (the same visit to a vet would've cost $70+). I hope the AWA opens up another day besides Monday's in the future for the services they provide to perhaps cut down on the wait time! Lastly, the adoption center, that we didn't check out, is a literal stone's throw away. read more

One of the several shelters I checked out when I was considering looking for a new furry friend. We came on the weekend and it was pretty crowded - good for the shelter. I liked that they left little treats that you could give the dogs. Cat rooms were monitored by volunteers. Adoption costs are a bit higher than other places but worth every penny when the animals have been vetted and cared for. read more

Love love love the AWA!! My sister adopted a dog from here in 2014, another dog in 2015 and I just adopted a dog from here in 2016. The staff is really friendly and helpful throughout the whole process. They are very active on facebook/their website so you can check out the dogs/cats/other animals before you visit. Once you get there- the parking lot is huge and you are free to look around at all the animals by yourself. There are treats and descriptions outside of each cage. Once you find a dog you may be interested in, a volunteer or staff member will sign you up to bring them out to the yard. When I adopted my dog, Molly, the staff set up a meet and great with my sisters dogs since they would be around each other a lot and to make sure they got along. The staff did a great job introducing the dogs to each other. The adoption process is fairly easy and once you put in an application for an animal, the staff will walk you through supplies you may need as well as care instructions. The Animal Welfare Association runs a lot of programs including training classes.There is a clinic on site that I have taken my dog to several times. The AWA also does a great job running fundraisers and events. In the warmer weather, they have dog yappy hours which are always a great time! read more

DEFINITELY a fan of this non profit veterinary services clinic that is also home to the largest(?) no kill animal shelter in SJersey. Check their website for info on when services are available, but I believe every Monday from 10 to 2 is the day. You can get your critters spayed or neutered, vaccines and meds, chip implanting and cats can get their claws trimmed. Prices were way lower than any other vets, and this translated to a very busy visit. There are walking trails to take your pet or prospective pet on. We had to use them when Fido was getting too rambunctious during his visit. The staff was really nice considering how many clients they are seeing. The check in system was nicely organized and the line to see the vets or assistants moved pretty quickly. If you have need of a pet in your life, do come here first. I'm a proud cat-owner and have brought home both of my cats from AWA without any regrets. My first trip (3 years ago) was outstanding because they screened me thoroughly, the cats were kept in clean conditions and all seemed to be healthy. My 2nd trip (3-4 months ago) was great but I noticed that the floors were not clean and there seemed to be a bit of overcrowding. The staff is extremely well-trained and friendly but a little gossipy towards one another. There was a follow-up call for my kitten to make sure she was in a great home, which I love. I have no plans of having any more kittens but would recommend this shelter to another person. read more

Short story: I adopted a pup from this group eight days ago. She is wonderful and sleeping next to me in her crate right now, and is a total handful in a good way. Great experience. Long story: At the beginning of the month, I moved into a new apartment along a beautiful river in Collingswood. An apartment complex that allows dogs. And dogs they have -- everywhere. All sizes. All breeds. All ages. Puppy fever hit hard. Soon, I was on PetFinder. Fast forward to eight days ago, and my boyfriend had a Living Social to use in Marlton. Knowing that the AWA wasn't far, I suggested we make a stop. There, we looked at some dogs, gained some info, and were told about the Mega Adoption event going on in Plymouth Meeting at the PetSmart that day. Just for kicks, I suggested we stop down the street at the Animal Orphanage. Looked around, didn't make the "connection" with any dogs, and quickly suggested we take a road trip to Plymouth Meeting. Once at the PetSmart, we walked around a little bit. I saw the AWA's section there, and thought it strange that they had a carpet of fur in one cage. Nonetheless, I circled back around, and then realized (as someone was holding her), that the fur-thing was, indeed, a puppy. As if fate intervened, the lady placed the pup back in the pen, and I quickly asked if she was adopted yet. No. She wasn't. I then picked her up, and she nuzzled into my arms and looked into my eyes, and, well. I *did* just say that she's laying next to me, so you should know the rest. The pup is a 9-week-old terrier mix with unclear heritage. She was rescued from an overcrowded shelter in the South, and is the sweetest little girl. Sophie is her name. read more

I will not remove my review as what I claim for discrimination is true. Nanci and Julie need retraining on how to speak to others and to not give dirty looks to people. It made me and my children feel very uncomfortable. Your allegations show your true colors. I said it before that when I received the dog and adopted her I had asked our counselor why the dog was skinny and her bones were showing and his response was she just got to the shelter and she's postop day one from being spayed so we are unsure. I've thought to myself, since I have a boxer and my boxer, when she was a puppy was fairly thin until she started putting on weight after about nine months old I thought perhaps this dog is going to gain weight when she arrives in my care. However, that was not the case. More importantly as I repeated to you via phone and in person that this dog had bitten, not only my kids, but also my mother and broke skin which I wrote and told you via phone and also on the surrender form, and Nancy told me this dog does not have any issues. That is the main reason we had to surrender the dog back to AWA which seems to be getting lost in translation. I have pictures of when we adopted her and how we could see her ribs and also I have pictures of when she bit my daughter and my mom and broke skin and I said this over the phone which Nanci said it is written in the file. However, again, Nancy said that this dog didn't mean to bite you she was probably mouthing. However, she broke skin and my mother was bleeding. I do not appreciate being chastise and discriminated against due to the negligence as well to AWA for not letting me know that she had not only allergy issues but behavioral issues prior to adoption in combination post op from a procedure with a fresh wound. Again, I am letting people know what I went through as the people I stated above are very judgmental and discriminatory and to beware at their own risk. My daughter and I signed up to be volunteers, we were looking forward to making a difference with animals. Unfortunately, several staff members made the process very unpleasant. As we arrived for assignments we were usually misdirected, or talked down to, never thanked or appreciated. I was even yelled at in front of several people at an event when I was instructed to do something that my contact told me to do, not this staff member. I will never tolerate anyone disrespecting me, let alone when I am volunteering my time to help. There was never really any animal interaction unless you could get there by 5 pm to walk the dogs, which we couldn't on most days. One of the trainers or staff, would frequently feed the dogs hot dogs as treats even though they were told that hot dogs were not a healthy option as treats for dogs. Donations were plentiful and often donated back out to people or thrown out, so it was barely used at the shelter. HORRIBLE communication and morale at this place between staff and in a general. I will never recommend coming here. These poor animals probably feel the negative energy from this place, we sure did. Volunteer in another shelter or rescue an animal from here to save them from this place, just be aware a lot of staff are the worst. read more

At first our experience was that the place was crowded and the staff overwhelmed. By the time you were able to get an employee to let you see a dog up close and personal, you would see someone else filling out adoption papers for the same dog. However, they wouldn't tell you that someone was already in the process of adopting that dog, they would let you sit there and wait. The dog my brother decided to adopt we were in the waiting room waiting to see if his "application" was accepted and 2 other families were visiting with the dog while we were sitting there waiting to see if he was coming home with us. Completely unorganized. When we found out he was approved for the adoption they assured us that there were no immediate health concerns for the dog, that he was of a certain age etc, and that he did not require any medications beyond the standard flea and tick/heart worm meds. First visit to the vet and we find out that the dog is MUCH older than we were told with lots of health issues, some requiring IMMEDIATE attention and estimated at thousands of dollars. The vet stated there was no way they didn't know about this. All we wanted was veterinary help for the dog we had for all of 5 days. They claim to have a vet on staff, so why couldn't they treat him??? Why/how did they not know of the dogs health problems????? Several calls to the shelter have left us with no help, and now (several phone calls later) they refuse to call us back. Attorneys will be getting involved now. I will never step foot into that shelter ever again. read more

A dog was adopted 4 days ago from AWA & is now on Craigslist for sale. Also they are clueless about working dogs & spreading misinformation about branding. No one brands dogs... it's waterproof paint or black hair dye for field trials. A group that works so closely with animals should be able to tell the difference in a brand vs paint. read more

I am beyond pissed. I have been dealing with AWA through email for over 8 weeks trying to schedule an appointment to have my dog spayed. First the schedule for Oct was not open so I was asked to wait until Sept. I finally received a call in Oct that left a message to schedule an appointment about 5 days ago and I immediately emailed to tell them that ANY day or time would work, and like usual no response. Today I decide to drive out there, 30 miles, to schedule the appointment to be told that they don't spay dogs anymore because that we're building a new building and handed me a paper with local vets that do it. WTF???? Horrible! To top off this frustrating situation, I was visibly upset with all the wasted time, the worked asked if I was happy for them to get a new building. I'm so grateful to my puppy trainer for having recommended AWA to me. AWA neutered my 9 month old puppy, and the experience from beginning to end (at least for me!) was painless. I would recommend completing the request form for spay/neuter services online as the AWA is difficult to reach by phone. I filled it out and within 48 hours had my appointment date & time confirmed. As previous reviewers have mentioned, there is a bit of a wait to drop off & pick up your pet. But I found the staff to be very accomodating and so gentle with the animals. Not to mention, it was only $90 for my puppy's procedure. They really have everything down to a science here.
