I made my appointment with Kandace for a deva cut. I had never gotten a deva cut before but after being natural for three years, I finally decided to get this cut to add more volume and shape to my curls. I explained to Kandace that I wanted to add more volume and for the shape of my hair to be evener. What I received was completely astonishing. Kandace cut off nearly nine inches of my hair and left my curls all miss-shapen and frizzy. There are sections of my hair that there is barely an inch left and other sections that fall much longer. It has been over three weeks since my cut and I am still distraught over the state of my hair. I have never had such a traumatic experience at a salon and wouldn't recommend getting a deva cut at this salon to anyone. read more

I had my first visit to Anita Kurl today. I felt bad cheating on my regular stylist but our schedules aren't really jiving lately and a girl has needs lol..... I was greeted as soon as I walked in and was offered tea, coffee, or water. The receptionist/ shampoo girl/assistant then offered to take my coat for me and I waited for my stylist. Looking around the salon it has some interesting art on the walls and is actually pretty small. The set up of the salon uses the space they have pretty well. So, you don't feel too cramped. I was able to snag an appointment with Michelle for a wash color and blow dry. I expressed all my requirements and requests to Michelle and she listened closely, heard me out, and gave me exactly what I was looking for. The blow out was great and she made my curly hair smooth with just the right volume. I'm a tough customer when it comes to a blow out but Michelle passed the test. The 10% check in offer on Yelp brought the total to $81 which is pretty good considering the quality and location. Added bonus- online booking feature as well! Will def be a repeat customer. I deducted one star for the long walk from the T and limited parking in the area. Additionally, the semi sketchy characters hanging outside convenience stores between the Mass Ave T station and the salon were less than my favorite at night. read more

One word: Jace. He is amazing... everything I was hoping for in a salon experience. I have always had pretty long hair and was finally looking for a drastic change -- Jace patiently listened while I rambled about what I was thinking for my hair (even going so far as to show him a picture from an animated movie... ha) and gave his own ideas, which were a perfect blend of his expertise and my desires. The cut didn't take too long considering how much he was cutting off, and he was animated and awesome the whole time. He styled my hair, as well, and took the time to explain to me what I should do on my own (I'm not someone who likes to spend much time getting ready, and he did a great job giving me a trendy, gorgeous cut that doesn't require too much maintenance). He just moved to the area, which is why there aren't many other reviews for him yet on this site, but he has something like 19 years of experience, and it definitely shows. I had a great experience with Jace. I get my curly hair cut MAYBE twice a year, and usually only at whichever Newbury Street salon has a Groupon deal at the time. I'd never met a stylist who really 'gets' my hair, until I went to Anita Kurl... Firstly, Jace started right on time. Granted, it was 11AM on a Sunday and the salon hadn't gotten too busy yet, but Jace took me a few minutes early, which I appreciated. He sat me down and asked me exactly what I wanted, and the best thing was, he listened. I brought with me photos of the type of cut I did and DID NOT want. Jace - great sport that he is - listened to my spiel/rant about past bad haircuts, and then we made a game plan. Next he shampooed me -- it was great and he used products specifically for my type of curly hair - tight but fine, and prone to dryness. Then it was time for the cut. Have has a total knack for making great conversation while staying completely attuned to the task at hand. In between chatting, he stopped to make sure I was getting the cut I want. Stylists who are open to critique tend to be the most trustworthy, in my opinion (though Jace's assessment of my hair was spot-on). So 20 minutes later my hair was cut and it was time to style. The kicker was that Jace actually said -- "you know your hair better than I do, tell me how you want to style." YES. Too many stylists I've had think they know how my curls will respond to wacky products and Beyonce-esque teasing. I've left the salon looking like an afro-ed extra on Soul Train way too many times. I highly recommend Jace, he's a skilled stylist and good communicator. The receptionist (anther stylist) was also very friendly. The salon is small but cute and clean, and they use Deva products for their curly clients, which is great. After bad haircut after bad haircut, I may have found 'the one' at Anita Kurl. read more

So the color and blow dry were nice but heres what wasn't ....the staff were unprofessional, using vulgarities and talking about all their personal issues ugh ( not conducive to a comfortable or relaxing experience) one girl was quite disheveled and kept complaining of how tired she was ugh. The worst part was I explained to the girl that I was going out after so could she please wipe off all the color stain on my face ( and it was bad) she said sure and I thought she had and after I left I was disgusted my ears, neck, forehead were all stained and yucky and noticeable! She even managed to splatter it on my wrist and that stuff doesn't come off easy if you don't wipe it quick. I've had my hair cut here before and they're wonderful. I wanted to write this review however because I recently walked in just for a bang trim and was equally impressed with the service. Even though they were incredibly busy, one of the stylists took me right away. She was incredibly patient and cautious in trimming the bangs to make sure I was happy with them, despite how busy the salon was (it was a Friday night at 6 pm). I normally have a great experience here, but after giving my new hair a week, I just didn't really get what I wanted. I've been growing my hair out for over a year. I went here just to get a trim, because I felt like the ends definitely needed be trimmed a little. I told the stylist I wanted to keep the length. Not that my hair was super long to begin with, but now, it's basically a bob. It's a cute cut, but I feel like I lost a lot of length. The stylist did a fine job if I had wanted a bob, but I thought I made it clear I wanted to keep all of the length. Guess I could try to go back, but I don't think there's a way to fix it. so it's been just about 5 months since i was last at anita kurl and unfortunately i have to write i'm disappointed. i have wavy hair and had came here believing that these are the experts when it comes to cuts and have experience with all curl types but mine was below that. i went back to my original salon that cuts my hair and was told my "layers" were just steps and underneath where my longest strands reached my waist was thinned out. i was given a very harsh sharp V cut that had 3 step layers, there was no blending in these steps and when the mirror was held to show me what was done i was embarrassed. i was fortunate enough to have my original hairdresser correct the shape and give back the life and thickness to my hair. to my wavy girls here is my two cents, i would proceed with caution coming in for a cut! read more

I moved to Boston in 2011, and after trying several salons to find the right one, Anita Kurl easily became the one. In fact the experience I have with Anita Kurl has always been perfect every single time- 100% consistent and on point. I tried Amaci Salon- don't recommend it unless you want to be forced to put $80 treatments in your hair which you are not only charged for, but will also ruin your hair. I tried Acote on newbury which is a great salon except that they have way too much staff of which 75% are terrible at haircuts. The first time I went, great haircut. Second time and the time after, terrible. Cut 1 inch shorter than I wanted. Anita Kurl lives on quality service that's consistent and tailored to your liking each and every time... They ask you what you want and accomplish that. They don't ask you what you want and then go on with whatever they want to do with your hair. I found the other salons doing that. They weren't cutting specialized to ones own preference, they were just cutting standardized on each head. At Anita, I visit Amiee and I always will. I first saw her in 2012 after I was dissatisfied with all the other salons and she transformed my head. She knows how to cut, she will cut your hair just as you want and in fact she will cut it JUST right to the shape of your head. She doesn't just go on cutting by looking at it as a lawn to mow. I had such a wonderful experience at Anita Kurl! I came in on a Friday afternoon after a long week and Annie was just the best. She did a deva cut for me with long layers and I've honestly never seen my curls look this hydrated, silky, or voluminous. She just really knows how to intuitively create the perfect cut for every individual and every curl pattern. She also threw in a treatment with the Buildup Blaster to deep clean my hair. I was tired from the week and wasn't feeling super chatty, and she just let me chill and relax while she explained her process throughout the cut, but was also completely happy to talk with me when I had thoughts or questions. The atmosphere was also great. Amazing playlist in the salon, and all of the stylists and staff were super friendly and so warm. As a long time fan and client of stylist and owner Aimee, I was selfishly worried about the day that would come when Aimee was no longer available to work her magic on my wild - oftentimes possessed - thick head of curly, repeat-Keratin-treatment-damaged hair. That day has (unfortunately for me) come as Aimee embarks on a new and awesome chapter in her life. Flash forward to yesterday when I noticed that my hair needed some serious TLC, and I pretty much sat for an hour in front of the online booking screen trying to decide who I could trust with tackling the confused strands that are growing out of my head. After some research, I put my trust in stylist Diana Almonte, and hot damn am I happy that I did! Diana as a person is very friendly, easy to talk to, and highly knowledgeable about her craft, and Diana as a stylist and colorist is as good as it gets (if not better). I came in hoping for some coppery-reddish-brownish-but caramel'ish highlights (yeah, that's what she had to go off of), and a few hours later I walked away with EXACTLY what I envisioned and a beautifully styled head of hair. She took the time to listen to my requests, decide upon colors using actual color samples, gave extremely helpful insights into how to care for/style my hair, and even went above-and-beyond by putting in extra quarters in the meter for my car, since the time was expiring and I was a hot foil-headed mess who couldn't go outside. I feel compelled to recommend my stylist Kandace (and Anita Kurl as a whole) after a number of wonderful experiences. I have never been the type of girl to have loyalty to any particular stylist - but oh my goodness, I definitely do now! For your reference, I have very long, very thick straight hair. Kandace is always bubbly and eager to work with whatever hair adventures I'm considering, offering me her expert advice. She always makes me feel like I am a special client and that she's happy to see me. AND Kandace always can give me an appointment on the day I request... even if it's the next day! (Thank goodness, since I am so caught up with school I usually forget about my hair until I realize I have a big event to look presentable for.) I had an awesome experience with Kandace! I just got a hair cut and it was perfect (I have long wavy/curly hair that I sometimes where straight). I just moved to Boston from NYC and was looking for a place in the South End (near my apartment) and for a reasonable price - Anita Kurl was my perfect match. For the first time, I feel like I have a hair stylist I can trust and will most certainly return. She listened to what I wanted and made recommendations, which I always appreciate since she is the expert! I drive 2.5 hours twice a year to come here. I love the work they do and the environment. They have wonderful customer service and the newest technology in hair. All stylists are super knowledgeable. I love the color work here. It's always hard to find a good colorists so I am very appreciative of the work they do. They even show you hair samples of the corsages and involve you in the color selection process. Cory cuts my hair about every six weeks. Highly, highly recommend. That's a long time between cuts, and I'm pretty shaggy by the time I schedule an appointment. That's partly because I'm a lazy, geeky guy - but it's also because Anita Kurl is pricey. Costs me $42 for a shampoo, cut, rinse, and dry. That said, I walk out of there feeling well groomed - like the important and stylish man I am. That's totally worth it to me. The staff are cool and friendly. Be prepared to step around a crazy homeless south end person on the way from your car, and for god's sake feed the meter if you park on the street. In the last year I've gone from a full head of shoulder length curls to a pixie due to some bad stylist choices...so I took a chance on this place. Diana fixed my sub-par cut and taught me a few things about my hair and the products I'd been using while doing so. I have 3c/4a? hair and was blown away at how different(BETTER) my hair looked when she was done given they used exactly the same products I have at home. During Hurricane Sandy, I got a bit antsy and bored and popped out to CVS. Whilst perusing the beauty aisle, I was struck by the lovely model's hair on the Frost and Glow box and promptly purchased it. I figured it would be a nice little boost before my next proper appointment. Anyway, after 2 glasses of champagne at home, I trotted into the bathroom and slopped on a few massive school bus yellow clumps around my crown area, which then developed into a vile hued crop circle formation. Unfortunately there were no aliens present during this experiment, just an impulsive me. I was dreading explaining this to a hair dresser and being judged for it , and subsequently had stalled on going to get it fixed. Anyway, after getting sick of holding my hand over my head during meetings at work and wearing wide headbands, I checked out the Yelp reviews for a salon near my work and decided to book an appointment with Jace. When I met with him, I was immediately calmed and didn't feel so sheepish explaining my little experiment. He was completely warm and nonjudgmental and discussed the plan for fixing it. He did a full foil and then used some toning color to hide my crop circle. I was struck by how precise he is when applying color. Then he trimmed my hair and thinned it out a bit with a razor. Had a really great haircut here with Annie! I had been pondering a Devacut for a while and after doing a lot of research, picked Anita Kurl. Unlike a lot of stylists, Annie took her time to sit down with me and understand why I came in for a cut and what I wanted. She talked me through the pros and cons of various options and let me make the final decision. I was chopping off nearly half my length and doing a whole new style, but she was very quick and efficient and produced a haircut that looked stunning! It was a tiny bit shorter than what I had expressed I wanted (which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5), but the general look is exactly what I was envisioning and I have been getting a ton of compliments. I got a DevaCut from Diana. There was a bit of a wait past my appointment time when I got to the salon, but I didn't mind. They have a comfy seating area and it was nice watching other people get their cuts. When I finally got into the seat and told Diana my vague ideas for what I wanted ("anything that looks good around my face as long as my curls look like... curls and not a frizz bomb"). Diana immediately took the reins and started snipping. After the cut I got a wash, some products, and a hooded dryer. Once my hair was dry Diana checked the curls again and then did a final spritz with hair spray. I absolutely loved how it looked. My usually dry hair felt much softer, the curls were defined, there was some nice volume but not too much (I have a lot of hair and it likes to poof up). It was everything I wanted and I walked out feeling great. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to replicate the look at home. Diana walked me through the routine carefully and I made note of all the Deva products she used and picked them up but it seems I'm still doing something wrong. :( But that has little to do with Diana, Anita Kurl, and the incredible time I had at the salon. I recently moved to Brookline and as most girls know finding a new hair salon in a new city can be daunting task. A girlfriend of mine referred me to Anita Kurl in the South End and she specifically referred Kandace. Let me just say I now am in love with Kandace. She has a mini hair consult with you instead of just jumping into it, we talked about what I was looking for, she gave her opinion, which I appreciated, then we jumped into it. I went there for a cut and color and I absolutely loved the final product. Bangs not too short, the length was still there, but now it has a little volume up top and an actually shape. My appointment was with Jase, and he was wonderful. Not only was he professional and clearly knowledgeable he also was fun and very easy to talk to. I've been going to Kelly for a little over a year now, and she is the master of short hair in my book. I usually go about every three to four months for a new cut, about the time my bangs are basically poking me in the eye, and I always leave happy. The ultimate sign of a good hair dresser? She listens to how much work you're willing to put into your hair every day, so I'm still happy with my hair after I've washed it without drying it or spending time styling it. I would say that's worth $50 plus tip. This place is definitely worth the trip on the #1 bus or silver line. Very friendly staff, who will talk about anything and everything and crack you up while you're stuck in the chair, plus Flour is right down the block. Yum. Side note: they take cards, but you can't put your tip on it so bring some cash when you go. read more

I was visiting the lovely city of Boston and was in need of a color touch-up. I'm sure anyone who colors their hair regularly can attest, it can be terrifying to try someplace new. As it happens, I was renting an airbnb apartment directly across the street so Anita Kurl was already on my short list of salons to call. In fact, it was the only salon I called. I spoke with Taylor who was sweet as pie and very professional when she took my information in case an appointment opened up that day. Well, I was determined so I came on over for a face to face. Kandace took pity on my poor, sad locks and took me right in. I really appreciate how pleasant and careful she was. I wasn't nervous one bit. She is a truly talented artist and all around wonderful human being who genuinely cares about people, I loved talking with her and felt totally at ease while in her care. If I lived in Boston or was a regular visitor, I'd be in her chair every single month! My color touch up and color gloss looked beautiful when she was finished and she gave me a quick and professional blowout afterward. I wish the humidity that day would have been a bit kinder to me but sadly, no. My hair went right up in a bun later but that wasn't to be helped. My color still looks nice two weeks later. Great spot for people wanting to love their curls. I had my first devacut here and omg, I love it so much!! Taylor was very gentle with every bit of my hair. She was helpful and informative, giving tips about how to maintain and get similar results alone. She also was asking me every now and then if I am ok with the length and shape. I loved that she understood that it might be stressful and scary sometimes for curly hairs to make these kind of decisions but I felt really comfortable all along my session. Great experience!! I've been going here religiously for several years now and ended up making friends with each of the 5 stylists that reside here. Kelly was booked up so Amiee ( tiny, cute, fierce and blonde...) stepped up to the color plate. Hallelujah!!!!!! It was interesting... I went to Anita Kurl 4 times in 12 months. The first time I left feeling a little blah, but ended up in time loving the cut he gave me. I went in wanting to chop it all off (I have BIG curly hair, thick. long...) and he wouldn't cut it off. He seemed a little perturbed when he worked on it for so long and I didn't love it. It was big on top, mullety on the bottom, and I wasn't loving it. He did fix it before I left, but I could tell he was a little put out. I would have been upset with me too, knowing that I spent so much time sculpting this great hairstyle...but I wasn't happy with it, and ultimately, that's what mattered. I went back and I ended up getting an appointment with Nicole. Nicole was my goddess at Anita Kurl. She was new to the AK staff, but has been doing hair for a long, long time. She def knew her stuff, and how to treat someone who was uneasy. I asked for a full chop, but was uncertain and wanted her professional opinion. She has hair similar to mine, so I had a feeling I could trust her. We made a deal: If I trusted her with this hair cut through the summer and still wanted to chop it in the fall, she would be happy to do so. I loved the suggestion (I could ease into short) and was THRILLED from the get-go with my cut - which NEVER happens! For a curly girl like me, it was great to see I could have a haircut that wasn't just below the shoulders and cut in long layers. She did a cool cut where it was short in the back, and longer in the front - long enough it was weighed down and not bushy. Plus, she taught me how to best straighten it at home. I walked away with a spring in my step, and felt great. I loved it so much, I repeated the style when it was time for a trim instead of chopping it all off. But, still, curiosity still sat with me, and I wanted to chop it all off, just to see what it would look like. She did an amazing job, and she looked thrilled with the results. I was ecstatic. My showers went from 15 minutes to 4. I love this place so much that I'd even go all the way to the South End even though I no longer work down the street for a cut by Nicole. They do have a CC machine for the cut, but you have to give a cash tip (there is no place on the slip to provide extra funds). So bring some cash with you to your appointment. read more

I have been seeing Amiee, Anita Kurl's owner, for years, since well before she opened Anita Kurl . She has artfully cut and dyed me through long and highlighted, bobbed and banged, and my current pixie cut. I adore her AND the rest of the staff at Anita Kurl. They are funny, friendly, and fabulous, and the salon is always filled with laughter and chatter. Bonus points for days when Gwen, Amiee's sweetly placid chocolate Lab, comes to visit and sit serenely at my feet. I always leave the salon with a smile and I always get asked who cuts my hair. I would not send my worst enemy to this place. I ran in here to get a shampoo and style for a photo I had to get taken and my picture ended up being terrible. Hair sticking up all along the part, and the ends very frizzy and wild. The worst part is that the stylist ripped out about 5% of my hair, not even exaggerating, so a month later I'm walking around with a zillion tiny hairs sticking up everywhere. read more
