A coworker recommended this place to me and I am impressed! Absolutely loved the rava dosa here. The chutneys were so flavorful and the dosa was crispy like it is back home. The goat biryani was delicious with tender goat pieces. Tried the madras filter coffee as well and it doesn't even need sugar because it is so flavorful on it's own. I was a fan of this restaurant and their thali. But I felt of late the quality and service at this place is dropping. Three distinct experiences at three different times - 1. Ordered thali, the waiter comes and tells me "BTW, our prices are higher than the be on menu check online and order". What?? 2. Ordered thali on a festive season. Waiter forgets to get the dishes (special) ones - Palav and sweet. I ask him to get and he says I know I have to you. Really? I finished my bowl of Palav in ten seconds? 3. Walked in today and the place was smelling of left over food. The tables were not cleaned and one lady was servicing food and three guy waiters were sitting surfing the phone. Telling her that table needs water, this one needs boxes. I thought it was his break time and sat at a table thirty minutes and these guys are sitting there doing nothing. I am writing another review for this place. I think Anjappar is now my official place for indo-Chinese food. While my experience with South Indian food was mediocre, they have been consistently making good indo Chinese food. While we normally do takeout, it has been a good experience for us and our guests. I think they could revive this business my offering an Buffet focused on Indian Chinese food. This is an opportunity worth considering. I still think the businesses needs to work on its south Indian food as it remains stale, and not fresh which is a must for good south Indian food . Review for Anjappar (Ektaa Diwali Fest, Irvine - October 4, 2025) We first tried Anjappar when it opened pre-COVID, around 2019. The food and service were amazing back then, and we used to visit frequently. Over time, however, both quality and hospitality started to decline, and we eventually stopped going. After several years, we decided to give them another chance when we saw their booth at the Ektaa Diwali Fest in Irvine on Saturday, October 4, 2025. We ordered one tea and one dosa. The tea was lukewarm, but we adjusted, drank some, and threw the rest away. The staff told us to wait on the side for our dosa, so we went where the chutney and sambar trays and cups were placed. There was a lady in a white dress standing there, doing nothing, and she looked like another guest waiting for her food. Since the setup looked self-service, my mom thought we could serve ourselves. The staff at the counter were busy taking orders and handling payments, and no one was attending that area. While waiting, my mom--who is hypoglycemic and gets lightheaded without food--took one spoon of sambar into a small cup to taste. The sambar was cold, but after they refilled the container, she took another small spoon (barely 25% of the cup in total). Suddenly, the lady in the white dress started shouting, waving her arms, saying "Don't touch that! I'm supposed to serve you!" We were stunned by her rude and unprofessional behavior. My mom calmly explained that we didn't know she was staff, that it looked like self-service, and that the sambar was cold and watery--just like the tea. Instead of apologizing, the lady responded, "Then don't drink the sambar," and "It's okay if the tea was cold." We were shocked and disgusted by her tone and attitude. We have never experienced such rude, obnoxious behavior from anyone in the hospitality industry. India is a country where we're taught from a young age never to humiliate anyone when it comes to food. This lady clearly lacked even basic manners, decency, and common sense in dealing with customers. The entire experience ruined our appetite. We requested a refund and left the booth immediately. After this incident, we will never give Anjappar another chance again. Truly disgusting behavior and an awful experience. read more

Messy! and Oily! I ordered from them after a few months. My order was Goat Egg Curry, Butter Chicken, and Roti. I did not realize that oil was dripping through the packaging and it messed up my car. And unpackaging was rough for my countertops and for serving, and the oil from the goal curry was dripping all over. It was overcooked with color and too much turmeric leaving yellow marks everywhere. The goal curry was only bones and the Chicken in the butter chicken has a weird smell. Super Upset. I went there yesterday to enjoy from what I saw an add on their Instagram page promoting "Onam Sadya Special". As seen from the photo below. This came nothing close to what an actual Onam Sadya meal consist of. First, the kerala Matta rice was undercooked. Second, about 2 or 3 sides were related to the Sadya. The rest were their normal everyday sides in which they serve with the Thalis. Third, they didn't even serve any Avial. When we asked the server where is the avial? He looked at our plate and pointed to a dish and said there it is! We told him no that's not avial and then he said oh sorry we replaced avial with the potato fry! WTF??? It's honestly so messed up because I was really looking forward to having this meal since it's hard to find any South Indian restaurants who serve these kind of meals especially during this Onam holiday season... I should have just driven out to Mayura restaurant in LA which would have served an actual authentic kerala Onam Sadya. I like the ambiance for the most part; the only thing was the music is a little loud so it was sometimes difficult to hear what my family was saying. The service was fast and good, except for bringing the Indian tea which we had to remind the staff multiple times about. The prices aren't bad though; I think they're worth it since we had leftovers. There were a lot of different categories and options to choose from on their menu! My family ordered many dishes and shared so we could try different items. We got the Medhu Vadai, Chicken 65, Anjappar Chicken Thali, 2 Masala Dosais, Goat Curry, Vavaal Varuval, and Naan. The favorites seemed to be the chicken thali and vavaal varuval (deep fried pomfret fish), but I also liked their masala dosa. The Indian tea was actually not my cup of tea, but it wasn't terrible. My brother got the rosemilk which I tried for the first time and 10/10 recommend! When asked for it to be fixed, the service was so rude and the server was completely unwillingly to remake the dosa. To make things worse we were surprised by a mystery service fee added to the bill, which, by the way, wasn't listed anywhere. How incredibly deceptive??! This charge wasn't mentioned anywhere on the menu, and I was only informed of it upon receiving the bill. When I questioned it, the service was dismissive and unhelpful. Went with a large group of friends today to Anjappar to get some masala dosas. We ended up ordering a lot of food today... I loved the masala dosa and the hot and sour soup. The mutton biryani was a hit amongst most of the group and the shrimp saag. We even tried their indo Chinese dishes of fried rice and noodles which were ok but the dosas and other dishes were better! Deeply saddened to report the last time we went for dinner it was a very different experience. I do have to shout out the service though--Tushar, the server we had the pleasure of seeing again, is awesome! He is so helpful in guiding us through the menu, not to mention patient and kind. Ok for starters you won't find parking anywhere near the restaurant so go park in the shopping center where the Diamond Exchange is and walk if you want to have dinner. So finally after my walk to the restaurant I was seating immediately and they do not have physical menus therefore scan the QR code on the table for your menu. We were brought a pitcher of free water and our order was taken. The food did take a while to come out and the temperature wasn't as hot as I'd like it to be. The flavor was pretty good though. Prices are incredible for the amount of food you get. Ambiance.... Well this isn't the restaurants fault at all but let me share my experience. There was a family sitting at a table near me and they were meeting the daughter's boyfriend for the first time is what it seemed like and the boyfriend yapped on about so much nonsense I wanted to get up and leave. Went for lunch today with a party of 6 and it was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant anywhere. The Mysore masala dosa was soggy and when I told the server about it he said that thats the way it is made! He said that he could bring me a paper dosa but I would have to pay for both the dosas . I asked to speak with the manager and 4 guys showed up arguing and defending their actions. The entire staff was very argumentative and refused to fix the problem. I finally asked for the check and was surprised to see an automatic 18% charge for gratuity as we were a party of 6. I asked the server as to where was it posted and he said that it was not and it was the law that they could charge if they wanted to do it. I was very upset and being a career restauranteur I was shocked at the response. I demanded to see the manager and he repeated what the server had said . After threatening them with a law suit for cheating customers they reluctantly refunded the charge. Bottom line is stay away from this place as it is filthy, service is and food is horrible. The biriyani lacked any real spice or freshness. * Kuli Paniaram - The paniarams were to oily and the chutneys served with it were completely bland. * Madras Filter Coffee - Tasted like plain hot water. No strength, no flavor. left feeling completely disappointed. I don't mind paying for good food, but this was far from it. Not sure what changed, but the quality has dropped significantly. We were on a road trip in California and just made a quick stop at Orange County and Kapoor has been on our list for quite some time now, and finally got a chance to try this place out. The ambiance is simple and modern looking. They open at 11:30 AM and we placed the order as soon as they opened. We ordered their famous goat biryani, chicken 65 biryani, natukodi biryani and Anjappar chicken curry. We order a to go, and everything was packed to perfection. When we opened for lunch, everything was still warm, made on order and smelled amazing. This is the most authentic Indian biryani. We have tried in a long time the flavors, the spice, the aroma, everything beyond perfection. This is not your typical Hyderabad biryani, but Chennai chettinad style. The service was very accommodating , they are running the promo which, unfortunately, the cashier wasn't aware of. The pricing is definitely above average, and the quantity is very minimal. Came for the thali. Look forward to my next visit to try more items on the menu. From the outside looking in, Anjappar has a meh-factor. It is located in a busy strip mall that has a small lot and not enough parking spaces. The restaurant itself appears very nondescript from the outside. The energy inside is much different. It feels more like a cafe than a restaurant, where you get the feeling that you have to order at the register. But that's not the case, and table service is offered. So, no cafe-style menu here -- the menu is expansive, with a focus on South Indian cuisine along with a number of other offerings. Yes, it appears that most people come in for thali, but Anjappar has so much more to offer: soups of all kinds, fried fish, kebabs, kalakki, pakoda, tandoori chicken, biriyani, fried rice and two of my favorites, dosa and gobi. I've never had a dosa with ghee, and it's on the menu. They also have a dosa for kids, which comes with a choice of cheese, strawberry or chocolate. The chicken thali is delicious. It's also massive, with plenty for two. For one serving, I had two meals and an snack. Included is chicken masala (which is in a flavorful gravy), sambar, rasam, kootu (one of my favorites), porial (which was mighty tasty) and rasam (which lacked flavor, strangely). Besides a couple of dishes that were very mild in flavor, the only other issues were that the dosa was fairly greasy and the gobi was incredibly mild in flavor. You will also get highly attentive service. The restaurant appears to keep busy, if not with dine in guest, it's a steady flow of to go orders. And the energy, overall, is quite relaxed and lovely, with gentle music, the smell of incense mixed beautifully with the smell of all types of curries and sauces coming from the kitchen. I'm am definitely writing this as somebody who does not know anything about Chettinad style food. This yelper comes from the general masses where "chicken tikka masala" is the norm for "Indian food," and Trader Joes palak paneer is what's considered exotic. Given that context, oh man what a treat! Let's be real, I'm not going to even pretend to know what half of what was in front of me when I ordered the Anjappar Egg Thali. Yes, I had to definitely copy and paste the name of the dish. But the reward of being curious and adventurous was well worth it, as everything was so unique and delicious. Take heed though, the heat is not for the faint of heart. I come a family that does moderate spice occasionally, but certain things on the plate kick it up a notch. Even if you're attuned to spiciness, I do recommend getting a mango lassi to cool things down or act as a refreshing palette cleanser. Honestly, I'm not even a fan of mango lassi in general (mostly the mango), but I could go for one from Anjappar with every meal I have, inside or out of the restaurant. read more

Slow service. We were seated and it took fooooorever to get our orders out. When the food came there was a lot of confusion (ie. The waiter said the wrong dish and so we sent it back, only for another waiter to come out and say it was the correct dish). That itself is not a big deal, sure, but we were also getting the overall sense that the waiters weren't welcoming to us (just an opinion). Food wise something was off. The butter chicken was very sweet? I can't confidently say I know Indian cuisine authentically, but there were enough opinions agreeing with the sentiment: "this is a savory dish. And it tastes too sweet". We also ordered the tikka masala which we couldn't tell the different between the butter chicken taste wise, at all. My biggest personal issue was that there were practically raw onions (as in not cooked down at all) sitting in the curry, crunchy to the bite. It was unpleasant Now maybe this is just expected coming from someone who is non-Indian, and perhaps my palette isn't suitable to give a fair rating. Then just let this be a review for other non-Indians with my palette to consider. It's also possible we just went on an off-day. But you know a place that has never had off days?
