This experience was honestly heartbreaking. I was trying to adopt a cat called Onyx back in October 2025 and was fully ready to provide a stable, loving home. I even offered to complete a home visit and go through every step of the process. Instead, I was denied based on the opinion of the previous owner, someone who had already given the cat up because they believed Onyx should go to a home with another cat. That felt completely inappropriate. Once a pet is surrendered, decisions should be based on the current situation and the adopter, not someone who no longer has the animal. And a rescue should keep that in mind. What made it even more upsetting is that I wasn't even given the chance to meet him or be properly considered. Meanwhile, Onyx remained in a café environment for months, despite concerns about how it was affecting him. He didn't get adopted until February 3, 2026. It's heartbreaking to think he could have been in a loving home much sooner. I ended up adopting another cat shortly after, who is now thriving, which only confirmed I was more than capable. This process felt overly restrictive and not truly centered on what was best for the cat. I adopted my kitties from this rescue a little over a year ago. I've had cats most of my life but had just gotten out of a housing situation where I had to watch a cat die and another be left to be neglected (no opportunity to rescue that cat). After a very nasty divorce, I lost the cats I'd had with my ex (who didn't deserve them considering he knew zip about them and didn't even care about his older declawed cat when trying to take in a younger clawed cat who'd been living on the streets) and vowed to get my own cats that no one could take away once I got my own place to live. That took over 8 years but finally happened so I looked into finding maybe an older but not super old cat. I felt getting kittens would be unlikely in NYC. These two were about 6 months old when I found out about them and I'd wanted a cat who looked like my first kitty Blink Eyes. I saw Coral first, learned she had a sister and after seeing how sweet they were on video, asked my building if I could have 2 cats. They said "sure" so I decided to pursue it. Having never previously dealt with a rescue and having heard horror stories about criteria and screening at some places, I felt I'd be rejected based on finances or having too small a space but I guess my getting window screens, having references who could speak well of me as a cat mom and the kitties themselves voting for me after meeting me in person got me these two. Now they're 18 months old and living a happy life, as you can probably see in the pics. I still have no clue how these 6 month old kittens didn't get snatched up in a second (they were found at 3 months) but I guess when it's meant to be, it just happens. Their foster mom even told me they'd have to go someplace else if I didn't take them so I felt I had served my goal of helping a cat who really needed it. I had my apprehensions at first but they talk now and definitely seem to be happy; they are my furry children and according to my mother, completely spoiled rotten. read more

After submitting the application I had to follow up with Nora MULTIPLE TIMES to even know where I stood in the process. It took her a month just to reach out to my references and do a virtual home visit. The only one that was delayed was my landlord. Once my landlord replied to Nora, I asked her for an update on my application status NO REPLY. It has now been 2 weeks and no reply from anyone. They clearly prefer to monetize the cats at the cat cafes than actually find them homes. If they were so desperate to hold on to the cat they could've at least given some BS excuse as to why I was denied and close the process there. read more

Was hoping to get another feline companion for my cat. The cashier at the adoption center invited me to go in the back and take a look at which cats were available. So we did, we moved past knee high cat barriers as instructed to take a look. One of the staff members even opened the barrier for us and let is in. After leaving us, another staff member came out and scolded us for moving past the barrier. I tried to explain to her that the other two staff members let us in but she wouldn't let me finish. she kept saying "you can't come back here. the barriers are up!" She hushed me and shoeed us away. I adopted my kitten from this organization a year or so ago. The volunteers throughout the process were condescending over e-mail. They insisted that "the visit didn't go well" when I first met the kitten, as she was very skittish and shy around strangers. When they visited my home to drop off the cat, the volunteer moved artwork and paintings around without asking for my permission to make the house "more cat friendly." While I am more than happy with the addition to our family, I will not be adopting from this organization again. read more

I had a very bad experience with this agency in January 2020. I did all the due diligence - filled out application, attended the orientation, visited the cat at the foster home. After all that, they turned me down for a ridiculous, BS excuse. I'd stated in the app that my apartment had a balcony. I'd explained that the door to the balcony is closed and there was no way a cat could force its way out there. It didn't matter that the cat I was interested had been in foster a year without getting adopted. They "suggested" that I take interest in a "less active" cat. Basically all BS a) the cat was not that active; b) they had no intention of letting me adopt any cat. I ended up adopting my cat a year later from Woodbridge Animal Shelter in NJ. I have fostered animals for different rescues, and when I was in New York for work last year, I fostered for Anjellicle. They're an all-volunteer group, but they're also professionals with excellent communication skills. It was such a pleasure to work with them. I have to respond to some of these negative reviews. No, they don't give cats to anyone who applies. By the time a cat is adoptable, Anjellicle has often spent thousands of dollars in veterinary care, followed by weeks of fostering. The purpose of their application process is to avoid a cat being returned, lost, or dumped. Even good-hearted people don't realize that a pet can be a fifteen-year commitment, and that healthy pets require routine vet care. Pets aren't toys, and these cats have been through enough. Support this group! Adopt a cat from them if you're ready to give them a forever home. read more

This is an all-volunteer organization. So any donations, adoption fees go to the care and provision of many many homeless, abandoned and injured cats and kittens. I did find it helpful to discuss my cat options with many people there- some were more responsive than others. We found the perfect little guy for our family, because someone listened to what we needed and knew the right match. I like that they have a mandatory care seminar because things have changed in terms of food (big-time) and training toys (scratchers, etc) since we first adopted our last cat. We learned some valuable cat facts and felt supported when we had questions in regards to behavior and care. You get a healthy, vaccinated fixed cat with a microchip and free microchip registration for a reasonable adoption fee and we were amazed the rescue could afford to offer that. read more

I do not recomend this agency at all. I'm happy for the families who had great experiences and adopted a lovable fur baby in their life from this place but these women completely turned me off to the adoption process. I felt judged from the moment I spoke. They were actually trying to turn me off to adoption. Wtf?! And guess what, it worked! It left such a bad taste in my mouth. I've had and have loved cats for as long as I can remember and their condescending, "you know nothing about cats" attitudes just pissed me off. From the other reviews I read, I see this is not an uncommon practice for this agency and it's a damn shame. We adopted our cat from Anjellicle last year and I really can't say enough good about them. The adoption process was smooth, if long (or not, it just seemed like forever after meeting our new friend), and they asked us to go to an introduction to cat-having class that, despite having had cats my whole adult life, I still found helpful. It was clear that Rika, who was in charge of adoptions, really cared about the cats in her charge. This was what really brought it home: we adopted a cat who had suffered severe physical trauma from an accident. A few weeks later we brought him to our own vet and she couldn't rave enough about how good and thorough his medical records were and how she could really see the history of what had happened to him. I'm not sure who to thank for that - the original vet or Anjellicle - but it has really helped us manage his minor impairment. read more

This is a group of highly dedicated volunteers who pull at-risk cats from the city shelters and get them into loving foster and forever homes. I adopted two of my cats from Anjellicle and the process was extremely smooth. Despite having had cats before, I needed to attend a cat care class in advance of picking up my cats. I didn't mind this at all, as it demonstrated how dedicated the group is to ensuring that the cats are going to safe homes. They were clear at the start that they are dedicated to the cats for their whole lives and will always take a cat back if the adoption doesn't work out. I was looking to adopt a cat to join me and my adult cat. I met Dylan at petco and his sweet demeanor won me over. I was able to speak to his foster Mom who filled me in on his personality so I knew who he'd fit it at my apt. They contacted my references the next day and I was approved. I was able to take the class over the phone since I work saturdays and now Dylan is here and settling in. His foster mother, Kathryn, brought Dylan over and stayed while he met my other cat. I adopted my two girls from Anjellicle and have also fostered through them. They care very much about the cats of NYC and pull as many from the at-risk list as their foster network will allow. The team behind the scenes works tirelessly and are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful if you're a potential adopter or fosterer. I've also met a couple other people through the group who have been more than happy to lend a hand with my cats and vice versa. I've adopted kittens from Anjellicle. I like them a lot. Positives: ACR seems to go out of their way to get to know their cats, so if you tell them what kind of pet you're looking for, they can probably match you up with one that suits your specific personality/family composition/etc. They'll be honest, too: they will tell you straight-out if a particular cat isn't a good match for a family with young kids, for instance, instead of trying to just push an adoption. I also really like that they genuinely want to make sure their cats get good homes and check references and such. In my experience ACR also does follow through with any necessary vet work the cats need; mine were all neutered/spayed, microchipped and checked out by the vet. One kitten also had a condition requiring a second surgery and the other needed antibiotics for a little while, and they covered it. I really, really dislike the vet that ACR uses but at the end of the day it's not a huge deal; I'm never going to need to bring my cats back to him now that they're adopted. Negatives: It can be a little hard to get ahold of someone on the phone/email at times. YES, I do realize they are a small, and very busy rescue, but you know...if you want people to actually ADOPT those cats, or you want to help a foster/adoptee who has a question, it CAN be helpful to have someone who answers the phone/returns emails consistently. It would be sad if someone gave up the idea of adopting an Anjellicle rescue simply because they couldn't reach anyone. And see above about the vet. And in reference to the comment below about the cats coming from the ASPCA: It's actually the AC&C, as I understand it, and it's totally on the level. A lot of the city rescues, including Anjellicle, are "New Hope partners". The AC&C, which is the city kill shelter, unfortunately ends up putting down hundreds and hundreds of healthy, friendly cats every year due to lack of space at the shelter. The New Hope program tries to get some of those adoptable cats out of the kill shelter before they are euthanized, and into rescues where they will have as much time as they need to find homes. It's a good thing, and ACR mentions it on their website and in other documents. Just about every rescue does the same thing. I've had good experiences with ACR and the kittens I adopted from them are delightful, so I'd definitely be willing to adopt from them again. read more

I adopted two kittens about 1 year ago. My cats are wonderful and my life is different for sure. It is an adoption requirement that someone come to your home when you adopt your pets - supposedly to make sure things are on the up and up. However, my criticism is that I don't think Anjellicle does enough to check up on their current foster parents, to make sure that the foster conditions are sanitary and that the foster parent isn't hoarding cats, as it were. They should do more to demonstrate that they aren't overly critical of potential adopters' faults when they the fosters' have faults of their own. Case in point: after nearly a year of adoption, my 2 cats have been treated for giardia and ringworm. Today, just back from my 3rd vet trip and $250 poorer, one of them has been diagnosed with conjunctivitis caused by feline herpes. My cats have done very well with their health issues, but these types of health problems are often caused by shelter conditions. My cats have never lived in a shelter - I was told that my cats were born at the foster parent's home. A home with about 12-15 other cats. (Told well after adoption, of course.) The moral here is that if you are considering adopting cats from this group, you should probably assume that your cats are shelter cats and not cats living in someone's well-kept apt. You should consider that your foster parent's home may be less clean or sanitary than your own home. Lastly, consider there will be other animals living along with them, such as in a shelter. I do believe that most of the people in this group are very well meaning, and if you can adopt a cat you maybe you should take the plunge and do it. (Get kittens!) But, just be prepared and ask questions. read more

I'm writing about one of their volunteers, we know her name is Mariah or Maria. She once kidnapped a cat named Oreo, who lives in Manhattan Avenue, a beloved member of our community. She decided that the fact Oreo spends the morning in the sidewalk (where he has access to water, food, and even a brush so people can pet him) is not good enough for him. In her savior complex, she just took him and after many calls and pleas from many neighbors she accepted to return him. Yesterday, she came back, and catched him. Some of our neighbors noticed she was trying to kidnap Oreo again and actually managed to free him from her. Does your organization thinks is fine to endorse people like her? Who does she think she is? Oreo has a chip, Oreo is a member of our community. The first time she took him, she caused stress on her owner -a senior citizen-, on kids, who cried when they found out Oreo was taken away; and besides that, when our neighbors helped Oreo yesterday, she decided it was ok to scream RAPE! just because they won't let her take him away. I found this attitude heinous, lame and really poor. I do hope you do something about her, or at least prevent her to act on your name, because she has shown that her best interest is not Oreo's wellness or safety, she is just an entitled white lady whose ego and pride are more important and she even menaced to try to catch Oreo again. Not ok, we are going to fight for him and won't let anyone to take him off the neighborhood. And we would love to know what Anjellicle's answer or actions on this matter are. read more

I cannot stress enough how amazing this organization is. We have an FIV+ cat and when we were looking to adopt a friend for him (we recently lost our cat of 16 years, his brother for 6.5 of them), we didn't anticipate that most organizations would not adopt a non FIV cat into our home, nor did they have FIV+ cats for us to adopt. Anjellicle not only didn't balk at our situation, they found us two FIV+ cats we could meet. And we met them. And we fell in love with them. And we adopted both! These ladies go above and beyond to make sure the cats are placed into the right homes and that all parties are happy with the adoption. They gave us as much medical info as they could, as much of the cats' stories as they knew, and based their recommendations of which cats we should meet off of our situation. It's been a month now and all 3 cats get along really well, and our original boy seems very happy to have fur family again. I cannot recommend them enough! read more

I have been and will always be a cat lady. I took some time off from my cat lady position when I moved from Hawaii to NY. I couldn't deal with owning cats after giving up my other ones, so I applied to be a foster parent. Figure if I won't adopt at least I could open my house to a cat who needed it. I was a foster mom for 8 months, till I ended up with Panini and Cubano. Time of Visit: Once to Petco to meet Panini after seeing a photo of her on ACR's Instagram. My other half fell in love with Cubano and thus 2 cat adoption. Wait: Due to my situation of finding a foster parent for my current foster it took 2 weeks. Price for two cats: $250 adoption fee. Service: The ladies that run ACR, as well as the volunteers are all very nice. Items ordered: ~Panini: rescued from a closed up bodega; 1yr old ~Cubano: rescued last winter in Queens. 10 months with some medical conditions (which I knew about before adoption) Would I return: Yes, but I REALLY shouldn't. Notes: -They hold weekly adoptions at the Petco lobby in the UWS and UES locations. -Yes, they have what some call a 'high' adoption fee, but it goes to paying off their medical bills for many of the cats they pull of the 'The List'. Many of them get placed on the list in the first place due to medical attention. -They are always looking for foster parents for cats who need a place to crash till they find a permanent home. -Being a foster parent requires a application and reference checks. -They are a 100% volunteer organization. -Older cats have a lesser adoption fee (I think $75) -Cats younger then 1 year old are highly encouraged (not sure if mandatory) to be adopted with another cat. Being so young and active it's good for them to have a friend. I've own/fostered young cats/kitten by themselves, and they seem to get into more mischief (chewing on cords, pushing stuff over) when they're alone. Positive Points: -I think being a foster mom enabled me to ease into being cat lady again. Taking baby steps allowed me a chance to forgive myself. -They are quick to reply back to emails. -Adopting rescues is a positive thing. -Even after adoption, we were able to receive guidance for Cubano's medical needs. I was hesitant at first taking on one cat, and now we have two. Panini meows two inches from my face every morning, and Cubano has manage to runs off with my grilled cheese sandwich twice..sadly, three times. It's OK though, I learn to move on and not dwell on the past, and my other half is slowly becoming a cat person. haha BOOM! read more

The woman I worked with at Anjellicle Cats, Kathryn, was really passionate about her work and about getting these cats into good homes. Even when there are so many homeless cats out there, Kathryn was very concerned with the future living situation of each individual animal. At one point in the adoption process she told us that if it wasn't working out, she would take our cat back "at any time, no questions asked" rather than have us bring her to a shelter. I knew she meant it. You definitely could feel how much she loved them. The cat I adopted in 2006, Stella, is awesome and I can't imagine life without her. She was treated very well in her foster home and by Anjellicle cats, and she's a great companion. I can't say enough good things! read more

Would not only like to thank ACR for the incredible work that they do for animals, but personally for the addition to my family after fostering and eventually adopting a great cat :) They take their work very seriously and have a great deal of respect for the animals, volunteers and fosters involved in the process of saving these animals' lives. I particularly appreciated the free class they asked me to participate in prior to adopting my chosen cat - I learned a lot about cat care, nutrition and behavior in particular, and have since found them to be the most reliable source on cat health in light of the amount of disregard and misinformation out there. The fee involved in adopting (fostering is free, mind you) as whined about in a previous review, is incredibly small - even if you don't take into account the obvious costs of running a non-profit animal rescue (not sure why you wouldn't ...) but you could just compare it to other places in which to obtain an animal - it is the same or a FRACTION of the fee at many places, including the ASPCA, Bideawee, etc. Please also notice that ACR accepts donations of not just cash, but items that help to care for the animals - food, litter, carriers, etc. And I have been to Spoiled Brats, more than once. It's actually a really great store, and the volunteers I met there were incredibly friendly and helpful. If you are looking to foster or adopt, please consider doing so through ACR - not only to support their great effort, but to make the process simple and rewarding for yourself. read more

I adopted my 3 cats from Anjellicle cats. I admire the great work that Anjellicle cats does to protect the cats they have in the shelter. Each adoption was easy and went smoothly. I appreciate that they came to my house to check for any hidden dangers that I may have. I like to go into things before reading reviews apparently. I had inquired and filled out the form to adopt a lovely maine coon mix. After meeting her and deciding she and I would be perfect together, I waited for the whole process to begin and see if I was approved or not. Only after then did it occur to me to read the yelp reviews. I must say I was a little hesitant and thought that perhaps the girl I fell in love with would not be part of my home. Needless to say, the whole process was swift and easy. Since the foster mom of my cat was too far away, Jennifer arranged for a foster mom in my area to come and inspect the house. Every question I had was answered by everyone, and I was quickly given the ok and scheduled my seminar at the petco on 100th street. After that I was able to take home my girl, and she's turned out to be the best cat I could hope for. read more

I adopted my first cat from them and am beyond ecstatic with this group. They are extremely well organized, kind and true animal lovers, which is why I started fostering for them too this year. For those who wonder where the adoption fees go, the answer is: into saving more cats and their sky-rocketing vet bills. For my boy, the last vet bill was $700+ for a dental issue he had. Anjellicle saves on a daily basis kitties who fall from high-rises, have several health conditions, etc. which entails many costly expenses. Their fosters are hardly hoarders, contrarily to what the reviewer below said. I for once have only two cats including my foster. There are many fosters who have more, yes, but you can hardly compare it to a shelter environment. Truth is animals, just like humans, can get sick, and Anjellicle checks them throughly before making them available for adoption and takes full responsibility for any precondition. We love them! This group of cat lovers and volunteers really took care of our boy Muggle before we adopted him. We adopted this two year old boy, and the night they were delivering him to us they noticed his back legs weren't working. The volunteer spent her Saturday night bringing him to the vet, all vet bills were covered. She even invited s over to visit Muggle and see how he was doing. Muggle had to be on bed rest for a week so another volunteer took him, cared for him, and brought him to a neurologist for another appointment. Again, all bills were covered. A week later we had our healthy Muggle. We really can't say enough good things! read more

I can't praise this rescue group enough and their wonderful volunteers. My boyfriend and I adopted the sweetest cat through Anjellicle a few months ago and their volunteers have been amazing throughout the whole process, especially our foster Wendy. While the process of adopting does take a bit more work than adopting from an ascpa it's because they truly care so much about their cats. In addition, you also get MUCH more advice and information about your cat. For example, the foster for my cat send me a page long email with all of the things that my cat liked and didn't like and how we could make sure our cat was happy in her new home. I really cannot understand the bad reviews people have... the adoption went smoothly and I really think the volunteers and fosters are angels. Thank you to everyone at anjellicle! read more

Very nice people working here, all very caring friendly and informative about the cats they have. The cats in the cages in Petco are all clean and well maintained. They are all beautiful and so friendly. If you are not sure about adopting, they have a foster program where you can take a cat for a couple of days or weeks to see how it works out. You have to fill out an application and be approved. Alot of the cats they have are saved from Animal Care and control. read more

It does my heart good to share the kitties on death row and see that Angellicle Cats Rescue pulls so many for adopters and fosters! I only had a few exchanges but I was extremely put off by their communication and lack of regard for interested adopters. It seemed they tried to find every reason to reject my application. They don't wish to work with interested adopters and approach with pessimism and cynicism, which I find to be insulting to our community of cat lovers. Apparently it is super competitive in the city to own a cat, and I am sure that most cat fosters/owners are secretly hoarders and are not even eligible to take the cats in the first place. This is how conjunctivitis and other infectious diseases arise. The ones left wanting to adopt and capable of providing a sanitary/safe condition are the ones who are disregarded and rejected based on "lack of experience," if you will. As much as I love cats, I am actually quite shocked at how the adoption agencies react....Just my personal experience. As much as I want to adopt, I am sure there are other friendlier adoption agencies to work with. read more
