This place is a gem, and rather unexpected. Very nice inside and out- rustic, idyllic. Can pass it by really fast on Hwy 2. Inside is written; "Euro tradition, American craft", and it really rings true. A real 'paysanne Boulanger' in central Wa. Pastries are classic and delicious, and affordable. Cinnamon "toast" made with caramelized croissant dough and vanilla custard, $2.50. Bread is gorgeous, good dark bake and open crumb; large loaves that they will sell by the half if you ask. Simple, rustic baguette sandwiches with really good ingredients (great Italian ham and a generous spread of fresh butter, $4.40). Quality espresso drinks, with a simplified take on the usual cap/latte/americano menu. Traveling from Leavenworth to Wenatchee, we had passed the Anjou Bakery many times. We decided it was time to try it out. Walking in, we were surprised to see a small display case with a limited number of baked goods. We saw nothing that showcased pears. In spite of the small selection, we chose a wide variety of baked goods to try. A blackberry cake, a buttery citrus covered cake, a chocolate cookie, peanut butter cookie, and oatmeal raisin cookie were shared by six people. Consensus was that the peanut butter cookie was the best (and really the only GOOD one!) A couple of us enjoyed the oatmeal raisin, but no one enjoyed any of the other baked goods. Our opinion is that if you are going to limit your selection (and charge $3 for a cookie!), your baked goods should be exceptional! We satisfied our curiosity, but not our tastebuds! read more

The food is decent but with few options; however, that is not my issue with the place. I'm a big fan of at minimum passably nice customer service, and unfortunately the young man behind the counter missed that mark by a landslide. He was snarky, rude, and even rolled his eyes at me when I explained I was milk sensitive to milk. I was honestly so caught off by his attitude that I was speechless. read more

This is a bakery in the French tradition. Elaine's croissant was not what she expected, but it almost definitely wasn't over-baked. Judging by the parking lot, you might like this place if you drive a station wagon and travel with a dog; if you carry things on a roof rack; or if you are a cyclist. You will find the Seattle Times here, as well as a local paper. If you think "Eastern Washington" means anything on the other side of the mountains, this might be a good place to pause and adjust your assumptions without leaving your comfort zone. Went to Leavenworth for Maifest. We drove further to Wenatchee, and saw this bakery on the side of highway. Intrigued with the color of the building and font of the logo, so we decided to drop in and check it out on the way back to Seattle. Interior decoration is tasteful, modern and comfortable. The owner was very friendly. Pastries are of good quality. Shortbread cookie has great texture and great butter taste. Canele is a bit crunchy outside, moist and tender inside. Perfect! They do serve Caffe Vita coffee but we didn't have a chance try it though. Pastries here easily rival some high quality bakeries in Seattle! Highly recommend to drop by this awesome bakery, if you're in the area. read more

A little gem in the middle of nowhere. I stopped in for a coffee with low expectations and walked away wishing something like this was in Seattle. Fresh made pastries, loaves of bread, pies, cookies, quiche, etc. Nice handcrafted espressos with Cafe Vita coffee. Hours are clearly marked on the front door (Thurs - Sun) starting at 9am (can't remember closing time). Friendly service. Place has a ton of character. They must be doing well because they are expanding their operations. I will stop by everytime I am in the neighborhood. read more

Oh Anjou, I have such a love/hate relationship with you. The love part goes to the food and especially the bread, which IMO is the only true "artisan" bread in the valley. I don't know for sure but I'm guessing they may begin with a poolish and use a very long rise. Their "country loaf" is baked DARK (some might think burned) and the crust all but explodes when you cut into it, revealing a moist and flavorful center. I wish they made more than two kinds of bread because the baker is clearly talented, but you'll only find the large country loaf, and a French baguette which they refuse to sell unless it's after 2:00 PM and they have any left. When I inquired once as to why they just didn't make additional baguette's, I was given a withering look in response, and therein lies the "hate" part of my relationship with Anjou. Save the nice young man behind the counter of late (Simon, if my most recent receipt is to be believed), I have never been helped by anyone at Anjou who didn't have a "holier than thou" attitude and act as if they were doing me a favor to wait on me and take my hard earned money. If it weren't for the bread, I'd never step foot in the place again, but it's as good as it gets around here, so until someone gives them a run for their money, I'll swallow my pride and continue to be treated poorly. Another reviewer said they weren't quite Soup Nazi mean, but they're darn close. They get 5 stars for the food, but the service drags them down to two for me. read more
