I stumbled across this spot and stopped in because I was curious about the food since it was vegeterian and I was on a no-meat cleanse. It's a bit inconspicuous so you may not even realize it's a restaurant from the outside. That being said, it seems to be a very popular vegetarian spot in the area and has a good variety of vegetarian Indian dishes as well as Western vegetarian dishes. The spot is midsized, with a good amount of seating. The staff were very friendly and helpful with questions about the dishes. I ordered a few items - vegetables pakora, bhajia, and the Annam Brahma dinner. I also tried their chai. Overall, the food wasn't too bad and was a good portion for the price. I loved the chai and also ordered a mango lassi, which was also very tasty. The pakora and bhajia were delicious and paired well with the sauce. The Annam Brahma dinner was filling although I wish it has a bit more seasoning. Overall, this is a good spot for vegetarian food if you're in the neighborhood and looking for a good vegetarian spot. read more

Very soothing and uplifting place to grab lunch! Upon entering this sacred restaurant, it feels like a mental vacation, your body shrugs with relief as the aroma of incense and soothing acoustic music take over. I visited AB after hearing high praises about the vegetarian cuisine. My Godparents raved about the food. After my 1st visit I now understand the hype. Annam is the sister to the local vegan cafe Panorama of My Heart located just north on Parsons. This location is very eye catching because of the chic light blue paint and alluring window display. I was not expecting Panorama Part II when I entered the restaurant and had no idea they were related having not done my homework. The vibe here is very zen and peaceful. I caught myself experiencing a room full of people but these serene peaceful moments of silience. Either that or too many people were lost in a food coma. I was captivated by the beautiful window shrine display paying homage to the founder. A white linen sofa, fresh flowers, books and photos. I studied the menu and the waitress informed us of the daily specials. I decided on the Palik Paneer mixed with vegetable curry, dal And basmati rice. I later paired that with fresh Naan. I also ordered a Ginger Peppermint iced tea. For my daughter I ordered steamed vegetables, dal and basmati rice as well. The other guests ordered koftka and began meatball kabob. When our food arrived it was everything I imagined and more. I always order Palik Paneer (cheese spinach curry) so it definitely met my expectations. The dal was tasty but I missed the spice. Next visit I will definitely go spicier. ::Cues Rihanna:: CAKE! CAKE! CAKE!!!!! The vegan desserts were out of this world good. We were celebrating a birthday and the desserts were just the right way to celebrate. The Carrot cake was delicious. Moist, filled with fresh raisins, walnuts and full of carrot. I would give this place a 5 star if it's only dedicated to the food alone but unfortunately the environment is a bit outdated and the service isn't exactly ideal. First of all please note that this place is CASH ONLY and that the note outside isn't very eye catching and that it's written on a piece of paper or something. Also, no banks around so if you're out of cash your only option is the deli ATM next door. The lady who worked there explained the food choices to me throughly and when asked which curry I would like I asked her to surprise me and I'm happy to try whichever but she simply says "no, I don't do that for people." I thought that was a little odd and had caught me off guard. In my past experiences, most of the places would happily do so or perhaps ask you "sure, how about the _____?". Anyways, the coffee was a little pricy. Even though it came in a very nice mug it was over $3. I'm a about to date myself but what the heck! I've been going to Annam Brahma since the late 80's. I have memories of going to Alley Pond Park with my dad and then heading over there for a meal. I will preface this by saying I LOVES ME SOME MEAT but Annam Brahma still manages to do it for me even though it's a vegetarian resto. My parents are vegetarian so this is one of their regular places to dine. My favorite appetizers are the Aloo Chop and the Bundha(it's not always on the menu but I ask for it and they make it if they have the ingredients. So what is Aloo Chop and what is Bundha? In a few words potato heaven. In more words...Aloo Chop is a butter soft potato ball with scallions breaded, deep fried and served with onion chutney. Bundha...Hmmm...it's potato with oinions and spices rolled in chickpea flour and deep fried. OMG! It's so good!! For my entree I get the Dosa or the Cheese Griller platter. My family has a long standing tradition and we go to Annam Brahma for their Thanksgiving Feast and Christmas/Chanukkah Feast. People might think ewwww Soy Turkey!! Chinmoy (who died in 2007) was a Bangladeshi immigrant and spiritual guru best known for his sweet, simplistic poems (he was fond of using compound nouns like "heart-power-victory") and for his unusual public demonstrations of physical strength -- he once wrist-curled a 203lb dumbbell on the Dick Cavett show and lifted a 9,000 lb. Ford F-500 with his calves. Sri Chinmoy was also nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Among his more famous students were Carlos Santana and Carl Lewis. Visiting the Annam Brahma restaurant, the most salient manifestations of its interesting back-story are the enormous portraits of Sri Chinmoy that cover the walls, the hand-written poems placed on cards on each table, and the deeply-distant and incalculably-contented expressions worn by the be-robed acolytes who serve the food. "Annam Brahma" translated means "God is food", but you should not enter Annam Brahma expecting divine Indian fare. The food is *okay*. It is competently prepared, arrives warm to the table and is altogether beyond reproach. It is not expensive, but there are lots of excellent Indian restaurants in Jackson Heights (for example) that cost as little. You should not go out of your way to visit. But if you happen to be in the area, neither should you resist the impulse. Came at 4 on Saturday, and there were 2 tables besides us, one Chimnoy people, one waitress, so no confusing comedic service, thought we did have two waitresses. I wish I'd had a funny wait staff experience. Samosas were unique, interesting texture, interesting batter. Green smoothy was too frothy for my taste, fruit smoothy was better. The curry was on the bland side, the chutney was good, dal was ok. Par-boiled rice is supposedly easier, quicker and doesn't stick together, but it's not as good as natural rice. I tried the masala dosa too, not bad, a little bland. One reviewer says they don't pour sweet sauces over everything and that is true. The decor is filled with Sri Chimnoy artifacts, photos of him lifting things, a wall display of books, and a shop area with videos of him playing music or running a race, and other weird stuff Blueberry and Apple pie was good, as was the carrot cake. They gave a little gift of a postcard calendar. I liked the food at The Oneness-Fountain-Heart best. This place was less goofy than The Oneness-Fountain-Heart best. The Smile of the Beyond they're just rude. So I like this place, vegetarian and spiritual places are precious, even if I'm afraid of some of the negative reports about the Sri Chimnoy group. read more

Today I decided to check out this place because its been awhile since I've been there and I was really craving a masala dosa. I walked in the lady who worked there was really nice, she took my order Cash Only and I asked to sit in their new outdoor garden that I heard was open. I was the only one there. The masala dosa was good. But I loved the garden. It's slim pickings over here and I am just grateful to find a place in this neighborhood that offered outdoor seating such as this one. Most surreal eating experience ever. I traveled to what seemed like an unassuming part of Queens into a White Castle-colored devotional/spiritual center (?) for some great food served by glassy-eyed, spaced out sari-clad Caucasian ladies who win the award for providing both the worst and friendliest service I've ever received an an NYC eating establishment. First, I had about five different servers try to offer me menus, ask me what I wanted, if any one was serving me, etc. at random intervals. I lacked a "go-to" waitress, which would be OK if they'd communicate better amongst one another, or would follow through with actually taking my order. The result: it took forever to get anything, I got the wrong order twice, and finally, got a check for a party of 5 when it was just me and my petite female dining companion. When I inquired about the huge check, the squeaky-voiced sari lady who brought over our bill said "oh! I was so surprised that the two of you could eat so much!" without the slightest hint of humor in her voice. Then she paused, stared off into the distance, wandered away, and never got me my actual bill. Eventually I had to grab another server in order to pay. Was I mad? Not in the slightest! I stayed friendly, they stayed friendly, the Indian lunch special was exactly enough food for a seriously low price. I still dream of that dal... wow. Annam Brahma is not for everyone, though you're more likely to have a good time if you channel your groovy, meditative side (just imagine yourself in "child's pose" and relllllllax...). The un-pretentious, unique interior is a museum honoring the guru Chinmoy--a sanctuary that is jarringly quiet and somehow removed from the world outside. The walls are crowded with his works, including abstract paintings and books on spiritualism. As a strange contrast, there are also awesome/intimidating photographs of Chinmoy's feats of strength. (He was a true "Renaissance man"!) In some ways, the venerable aura of the place discourages anything but an introspective attitude. It's not just me; I've noticed customers barely speaking above a whisper to other diners. Instead of noisily crunching on my chapatti, I eat with methodical, modest bites so as to preserve the solemn atmosphere. The food options are a weird mix--it kind of reminds me of "The Dream Cafe" from Seinfeld. Indian cuisine features prominently on the menu, but there are also sandwiches, salads, and a "daily special" that's a rotation of Italian, American, and Chinese foods (all vegetarian, of course). Overall, the food quality is somewhat mediocre, but the prices are affordable and your cash is going towards a noble cause. read more
