The biryani and tehari were mostly bones, with only 2-3 small pieces of meat. The samosas also smelled bad and were not fresh enough to eat. Chose this place because Doordash had a discount and they had fairly good reviews. In the end, was pretty disappointed. The pictures do it a lot more justice than it deserves. Started with the meat samosa. This is probably 1/3 of the size featured on the Doordash picture. While it's cheap, it wasn't worth. Two mains: chicken keema and curry beef. The former was a dish I hadn't had before and was pretty spicy in a way I wasn't expecting. This hit the mark. The latter, the curry beef, I got because it's apparently very recommended. Super dry and not terribly flavorful. I ordered Pulao rice but they were out so it was downgraded to white rice, which is fine. What is not fine is that it seems unconscionable for a restaurant of this cuisine to require you to order rice as a side dish. Neither of these dishes should be eaten without rice and to have to pay extra for it ($4 for the Pulao?!) is a disservice to the cuisine. We also grabbed some naan, which was the the most white bread version of naan I've ever had. Fluffy and light but entirely flavorless. As one of Bangladesh's most well known chains, Sagar is relatively popular in this part of Hillside (Jamaica), which boasts one of the most concentrated desi communities in the borough. (#1) It's not exactly a destination but serves as a decent option for fans of the cuisine. If not for the name, this place could really pass for any of the restaurants along the avenue. There is almost little to no decor and the layout is super similar to many restaurants in Jackson Heights: display of food items in the front and sparse, booth-like seating in the back. It's not the most spacious spot, so I'd reserve dining here for small / intimate parties only. Food wise, they serve a number of classics, which include: kacchi biriyani, curry fish with a Bangladeshi carp, murog polao (#2), and a whole plethora of sweets. I do wish there was more emphasis on regional cuisines, such as Dhakalaya, but I find that the overall variety to be extremely neutral. I imagine the latter is by design, so anyone with specific dishes in mind aren't likely to find it here. Service has a tendency to be pushy, especially when there is a crowd which is more often than not. The place is already narrow and tight and parking is strictly street side. Great Bangladeshi Chinese food place. Always kept the same quality and taste. I guess the best seller is the chicken lily pops.

We always hear so much about this chain of Bangladeshi food. Thought we should give it a try and was hoping to really have our minds blown. I mean, it was good, but not that great. There is no decor or ambiance to the place at all, just a hole in the wall. The staff was friendly and helpful though. We are used to experiencing the "rude/I don't care" attitude from many Bangali places, but the staff was legit nice here. We ordered a few items and some were okay or just plain bad. The goat curry had an awful smell to it, we couldn't even eat it. The veggies, samosa, bread and chicken were meh. I think the fish was the only winner, everyone seemed to only enjoy that the best. This is a chinese fusion restaurant mix with Bangladeshi flavors. Tge restaurant has recently expanded its place and took over next door business for expansion. The restaurant use to be great, food was consistent in terms quality and flavor. However, lately its been lacking the consistent flavor and quality it use to have. I dont know whats going on behind back doors of the kitchen but its definitely impacted the overall flavor on its main dishes. Only spot I go to get Bangladesh roast chicken. The prices here don't really seem on par to the portions. The roast chicken is tasty though. But for the price I dunno. For over a dollar something per piece ehh. Unfortunately the drum sticks and thighs seem to be on the meager side. You also don't get to see the pieces you get in containers because they are cooked earlier so cold when you buy a tray. The vegetable samosas are good, but please don't pawn off the green sauce and tell me out of tamarind sauce(for reals). They also sell trays of sweets that are also very good. Extremely disappointed with carryout order. We ate brrakfast there while visiting from VA on 20 June 2022- it was good but was extremely disappointed with the carry out order. We ordered 30 pieces of shami kabab and 2 behari kabab. While waiting for the carry out order, they said they didn't have behary kabab , so replaced with two kacchi biriany for additional charges. I even tipped 15% for the carry out order. It's been a tradition every time I got to New York to pick up family members at JFK airport, that I drop by sagar on my way back and pick up a select key dishes. Up until 2013, this was done atleast 2-3 times a year, for many many years. If I used yelp during those times, I would probably have given a 5 for those visits to be honest. I loved the food that much. Well since then, I've moved out of the east coast and haven't been back...until now. I found myself in nyc last week and per tradition, I decided to drop by here to satisfy cravings that I've held in for many years. We ordered multiple items and it pains me to say, most dishes were subpar. I understand if a dish was not up to par on any particular day, but when all the dishes are mediocre, that shows they have lowered standards and quality control. The bihari kabab (bangladeshi style) was pretty much inedible due to the amount of salt used. They also burnt the sides beyond what is acceptable meaning 10% of it was hard like rock. The chicken roast had 4 big pieces but 2 of the pieces were still undercooked on one side. The kaachi biryani used a strain of rice I have not seen used to make this dish before but more importantly, it had 3 pieces of meat and all of them were just chorbi (fat) with no actual meat. The oils and natural fat from the meat should be absorbed by the rice giving it enough moisture to not need any gravy but the biryani was so dry we had to use the chicken roast gravy to offset the dryness. The morog polao was decent and shami kabab was spot on. It's not acceptable to have so many dishes be so subpar. It looks like this place has become so popular among the locals that either they don't care or not able to keep up with the demand/ quality. Either way, after all these years, I think I've outgrown this particular tradition of eating at Sagar. If there ever is a next time, I'm going to try some of the other bengali restaurants nearby. read more

This is one of the better Bengali restaurants on the block. Since it popular, the turnover rate for the food is high, making their dishes sitting around less and more fresh. To be honest, I'm still not sure how to order food in these restaurants. There's a counter, a buffet selection, and you can also you order what ever is on the menu. I tend to come here with my Bengali friend, so she does all the ordering. Their lamb biryani was fresh and mild in taste, simplistic in ingredients, emphasizing the delicious flavorful rice. We came in for takeout. We were asked to wait for 15m for the order to be ready, but 30m later were told (because we asked) that it wasn't ready because our fresh naan order was behind another party of 50!! And no proactive communication on that at all. We asked to cancel the bread but they wouldn't, and ultimately we got our takeout at 45m. The Sikh kebab were low on flavor / spices, and so was the biryani. The chicken curry and bread were great though. There are many Indian takeouts on this street. Since I'm South Asian, I'm quite picky when it comes to eating traditional Indian/ Bengali Food at restaurants. Sagar definitely marks on of the better Bangladeshi restaurants here in NY. My family specially loves their sweets from here which are usually made fresh everyday. If you're looking to buy bengali sweets then this place is definitely worth the drive.
