Took a detour just to get back here and order a great lunch! I was seated right away as usual and offered a great juice while I browsed the menu. I got the cutlets while my lunch was being prepared. There was great music on and all the TVs playing Sri Lanka food shows and teledramas. If you insist they will portion out 8oz or 16oz containers to go of the meats & veg. Highly recommended.

Why aren't there many Sri Lankan Restaurants in NY (besides in Staten Island)?!?! There is only one in Queens, and two in Manhattan; the rest are all in Staten Island. Well, thank goodness Spicy Lankan is in Richmond Hills, Queens! They've been there for about 2 years now and I finally got to go! It's located pretty far from where I live but it is totally worth the trip, and I will most definitely be back! Spicy Lanka is such a cute restaurant! Nice decor, and they even have a DJ booth; although they're planning on removing the DJ Booth. In lieu of the DJ Booth, they will have live music soon! This restaurant has such a nice vibe. Service and hospitality were great; very helpful, friendly and welcoming! Below are the dishes that 11 of us shared: MENU (shared by groups of 4): ~ Mutton Rolls ($8/3pcs): These were delicious. Mutton filled rolls, served with a Sriracha sauce. ~ Devilled Pork ($17): Succulent, tender pork, with peppers and onions, wok-tossed in a rich, fiery sauce infused with aromatic Sri Lankan spices; sweet, spicy, and savory. ~ Egg Kothu Roti ($12): Finely chopped roti with scrambled eggs and an array of colorful vegetables. This was served shaped like a pyramid. Nice presentation! Mutton Lamprais ($23): The term "lamprais" is derived from the Dutch word "lomprijst," meaning a packet of food. Introduced during the Dutch colonial era, the dish evolved as a convenient way to enjoy a complete meal, combining mutton curry, ghee rice, and flavorful accompaniments. If you've never had Sri Lankan Cuisine before, then this is the MUST-HAVE dish!! It comes wrapped in banana leaves; almost like a gift! Open this gift for a truly complete meal; so flavorful and delicious! Seriously, Get This!!! This was unanimously everyone's fave dish of the night! (I always get a Lamprais dish whenever I'm at a Sri Lankan restaurant). ~ Calamari Curry ($8): Honestly, not recommended. This was unanimously the group's least fave dish. We didn't care for the flavors and it was unlike any curry we've ever had (and we usually love curry!). Note that it was a very small portion (about a small cup sized). ~ String Hoppers ($9/15pcs): A rice noodle dish made from pressed rice flour dough; shaped in flat, small circles. These Hoppers are topped with accompaniments such as coconut milk sauce and Samboul. ~ Cucumber Lime Juice Mocktail: The owner gifted all of us these Mocktails, as they were trying out new beverages for their bar. This beverage was so incredibly refreshing and minimally sweet. We loved it. What a great way to end our meal. Thank you! To our pleasant surprise, our check came with Ferrero Rocher chocolates for everyone! Thanks! All in all, a great dining experience. We look forward to a return visit to try their many other menu items, and of course, for their Lamprais!

Free cucumber mint drink from the staff post meal. Tasty

I went to this restaurant a few days ago with a large group. The space inside is nice and the restaurant is quite close to the 121st Street stop on the J so it's not too bad of a commute from me. The service was friendly and accommodating. It took a little while for the main dishes to come out after the two smaller dishes but that was expected as we did order three of all of the dishes below. Overall, the food was good though I would say less spiced/spicy by comparison to Sigri in Manhattan or the various Sri Lankan spots on LI which is fine for some dishes but less so for others. We started with the Mutton Rolls listed (abridgedly as per the other descriptions) as a handheld delight of mutton wrapped in a crispy embrace came with 3 pieces per roll. The inside was a mix of moderately spiced mutton along with potatoes with a nice crispy outside. It came with a sweet and spicy sauce which tasted vaguely of sriracha but I am unsure. We split them in pieces among the groups and enjoyed them. Soon after arriving was one good dish and one not so good dish. The Devilled Pork listed as tender pork pieces wok-tossed to perfection enveloped in a rich, fiery sauce infused with aromatic Sri Lankan spices was good. The pork was tender as described and tasty with a sweet and slightly spicy glaze and the onions, tomatoes, and peppers were well cooked down and well flavored with the same glaze. Good overall. Less successful was the Egg Kothu Roti listed as finely chopped roti dances with scrambled eggs and an array of colorful vegetables on the griddle. I liked the pyramid presentation and the texture of the roti and egg with the veggies was nice but it just wasn't enough flavor for my liking. I'm used to the heavily spiced version at Anjappar Chettinad among other spots and by comparison, this one was bland. We finished this dish least along with the calamari curry below so I presume others had the same opinions. Best of the dishes was the Mutton Lamprais listed as a complete meal combining mutton curry, ghee rice, and flavorful accompaniments. There was some cooked down veggies in there which were sweet and tasty (possibly ash banana) along with a hardboiled egg, potatoes, and a light cashew curry. The mutton in there was tender and the rice was well flavored and this was overall excellent though as per the other dishes, a bit less spicy than other spots. Still, I would recommend it and if I was in the area, I would stop by for one of these . We decided to order some String Hoppers which had a good texture. They came with 15 for $9 and it costs 40¢ for an extra one. The hoppers are listed on a separate menu as apparently some folks wanted these added which was a good idea. They also had egg hoppers as a special on a menu at the bar which I would have likely partook in if I knew they had it but I digress. The hoppers came with two different sambol (the usual coconut as well as one other) along with some daal/lentils, and a spiced coconut milk. The sambol helped elevate the flavors of the less spicy dishes and I was happy to have it regardless of the hoppers. The rest of the group had some of the Calamari Curry listed as a velvety, creamy sauce with coconut which most said was their least favorite dish. I have a severe allergy to calamari/octopus so I didn't partake so I guess Andie will give the details when she writes her review. The food here was pretty good. Reasonable prices for the quantity of food though as noted several times, less spicy than I would expect. Mid 3/upper 3. I hope they do well

I got a chance to try Spicy Lanka and they did not disappoint. For Appetizers we had the Vegetarian Island Pocket, basically an empanada. We also had the Fish Lankan Crunch Roll, which had a crunchy exterior with a flavorful fish filling. Entrees we had the Shrimp Biryani and Mutton Kothu. Both dishes were very delicious. To drink we had the Nellie Crush and Passion Splash both nonalcoholic beverages that certainly hit the spot. The waitress were very sweet and kind, they both helped us with deciding what to get since this was our first time having Sri Lankan food. The ambiance was welcoming and felt very much at home. The restaurant is a decent size with the ability to serve larger parties.

Delicious food and kind staff! Many vegetarian options. I got the vegetable island pockets as a starter, and the veggie kothu and veggie fried rice for mains. Easily accessible from the J train!

Wow what a great experience we had. It was pur first time trying Sri Lankan food. We started off ordering a bunch of drinks. Some imported from Sri Lanka like Elephant house Melon and ginger beer. We had the passion splash, nelli crush. Not only were they colorful and beautiful but each had a distinct taste and took us on a journey to prepare for out delicious meal. We ordered the shrimp lamprias in a banana leaf. 10 star. Devine and delicious. Rice with cashew curry, caramelized eggplant, fried fish cake and fried egg, plantains that had a hint of coconut and other things. We devoured this. Great dish for first time people. We ordered the vegetarian devolied firecracker. I loved the lotus root and eggplant. Nice coating and taste. I ordered this mid spicy sp I could try how thry may eat it. My friend cant eat spicy and this restaurant did a great job giving the exact spice adjustment you request. Crispy flavorful veggies. We ordered this pyramid looking dish called Kothu with chicken and string hoppers. What a hit. The dipping sauce was amazing. I had housemade hot paste to add. Now the desserts are a must. The Ceylon Falooda blew my mind. It was like across between an icecream float and bobba but unique and rosy. 10 star. The watalallan flan was tasty. The Semiya Payasam pudding was warm and comforting. Well be back to try all the other foods we didn't get to taste. Highly recommend. Sansi our waitress was kind and explained everything.

First time coming here and it was awesome. The restaurant is beautiful and clean inside. The service was fantastic. The food was delicious and so flavorful. Everything we ordered was amazing. Almost all their dishes can be prepared to your spice level.

We had an amazing experience. Wonderful restaurant for Sri Lankan food. They offered amazing service. Its very clean and well decorated. We had fish cutlets, mutton rolls, Lamprise with black pork curry, one noodles item, some very refreshing drinks (one is coconut oasis) and Watalappan as desserts. Everything is highly recommended.

I love sri Lankan food so much! The amalgamation of spices, the levels of heat, use of banana leaves and medley of ingredients, the food and the way the restaurant prepares it hits you with so many flavors all at once. Ordered the deviled calamari and the mutton lamprai and thought the two paired beautifully together. The lamprai had all these spices mixed in with a nice assortment of veggies and mutton while the deviled calamari was bursting with a nice sweet spicy savory coat of sauce. Definitely come here for something unique and not easily found in queens. I will come back due to it's uniqueness and how well prepared it is

So this is the place that used to be on hillside, in Jamaica, near Parsons. I was really sad when they closed. And now, I'm so happy they've opened again. This family run operation is good. They've streamlined their menu for better or for worse. So now, onto the actual food.... the mutton rolld6 aren't as flavorful, or have as much mutton as is good for. The chicken rolls are surprisingly better. The pork kothuroti is excellent! The chicken curry in and off itself isn't amazing, but with all the sambars it comes with, it is awesome! Walatappam is okay... it doesn't taste nearly as coconutty as it should. The service is very, very slow. So don't come here in a rush or starving. The young man working is a delight, really as helpful as he could be... Then, when I complained that they didn't have hoppers on the menu, he let me know that the following Sunday, they were catering an event in alley pond and would have hoppers! You know I was there! And they were awesome!!!!! They need to add them back to the menu!!!!

My first time trying Sri Lankan food at Spicy Lanka. The staff was so friendly and helpful in choosing what to order. We opted for the Deviled Pork, a Chicken Kottu and chicken rolls. Everything was delicious and flavorful and definitely spicy! I would have liked some plain rice along with the deviled pork, but overall it was great. If you like spicy and flavorful, Spicy Lanka hits all the notes.

Pros: seated quickly, ambiance was lovely, appetizers came out quickly, the Lasuni Gobi was delicious. CONS: My husband and I waited 40+ minutes for our main dishes (dal + rice and the Paneer Tikka dish) to arrive....... And we watched the people who were seated AFTER us receive their MEAT dishes before we got our ours and we most definitely ordered first. We asked our server MORE THAN ONCE what was taking so long and we got the same answer each time "I've told the kitchen to hurry, it'll be out soon" To make matters worse, the person who brought us our dishes (maybe the chef? Maybe the manager?) brought them without the naan that we ordered. When I asked, "where's our naan?" He had the audacity to rudely say "it'll be out in a few minutes", as if we hadn't already been waiting 40+ minutes for vegetarian food that I could've whipped up myself in 20 minutes. His attitude towards us was so unacceptable considering the circumstances. We have absolutely no idea what happened or why it took so long for our simple dishes to arrive. It's especially perplexing considering that the people who came in AFTER us got their meat dishes first. The server apologized and decided to bring us some kulfi (ice cream) to try to make up for it, but we try to avoid eating sugar so that was useless. I felt bad for the server because it wasn't his fault that our food took a ridiculous amount of time to make it to our table, and it's not cool that a manager never stepped in to try to reconcile. As someone who waited tables for 8+ years, I was shocked at the lack of support this server received from his management team. The dal and paneer tikka dishes were average tasting at best (and overpriced), making another trip here completely unfathomable, most especially considering how we were treated. Note to management: do better. Support your staff and step in to reconcile with unhappy guests if this happens again.
