When I woke up this morning, I did not for one moment think that I would be eating anything with the name "Tiger's Blood" anytime soon. Fast forward to this afternoon; as I have many times before, I found myself passing by Annie's Snow Biz, the MoFo (mobile food) truck that hangs out at Douglas and Harding. For once I was not in a hurry (plus it was hot as hell) so I decided that it was a good day to stop and give it a try. So glad that I did! I was going to go for the old standby, piña colada, but I asked about some of the less traditional flavors, and decided on one of those. Turns out that "Tiger's Blood" is a mix of strawberry and coconut. Uh, yeah, sign me up! I also decided to add the sweet cream topping for 50¢, which I thought would be sweetened condensed milk..the server said it was not, but similar to it. It was deeelicious. Icy cold but fluffy, sweet but not cloyingly so. {Tip: I am crazy about sweet stuff so if you think you might not like it to be too sugary, I might actually suggest skipping the toppings, at least the first time you try it.} Definitely looking forward to my next visit. Found these guys at a MoFo event in Citrus Heights and it was a great end to our meal. The shaved ice simply melts in your mouth, you're not left with big chunks that you have to break your teeth on. There are about 44 flavors to choose from (my girlfriend counted when I ordered a shaved ice with only 1 flavor) and three different sizes (8, 16, and 20oz). And they are big sizes. Pretty much take your cup, double it, and that's how much you'll be getting. The staff was very friendly too, and the wait wasn't very long. I'll be keeping an eye out for Annie's again. Oh, and I'm not sure if its always like this, but when I stopped by they were cash only, so keep that in mind for you "plastic only" folks. read more

First time I've tried the shave ice from these guys was at this past weekend's SactoMoFo's event. I had a difficult time deciding on what flavor to try because I was given so many choices! So I went with the Orange Creamsicle, I got my daughter the strawberry flavor and my friend Kelly W the Cantaloupe. The portions of the cups are HUGE!! Glad we got them all in small sizes, there was so much ice that I couldn't finish it all. But I wasn't too thrilled with the flavor or the ice, maybe because I've had the real deal in Waikiki and having done so I find it difficult to grasp a similar flavor. The flavor I got almost tasted like some cough medicine...yuck! I did however taste my daughter's strawberry flavor and it was much better. My friend did say her cantaloupe shaved ice was okay. So the first time I tried Annie's was when the wife and I drove by Woodcreek high school and she was in the parking lot for the end of football practice, pretty good idea if you ask me. I ordered a medium with lime and cotton candy.... it was pretty much everything I wanted. I am not a huge fan of the condensed milk so I passed on that part. But when I started to eat this shaved ice it brought me back to Hawaii and made me feel like I was on a vacation. I personally flipped out when that happened BOTH TIMES I was in line. It was very unprofessional, let alone rude, since it was hot and I pulled over and got in line just to finally try Annie's. I drive by daily and waited for it to be open. You can act like it didn't happen but I remember and i don't forget being treated like my business didn't matter. I LOVE shaved ice, true Hawaiian ice, which I didn't even demand I expected "shaved ice" and it was still lousy chunky ice. I don't care how you shave it. You know it can't be called Hawaiian, you don't have the authorization, it's not true Hawaiian or approved to be called that. So happy we found this place! I've seen it so many times but never stopped and I'm so happy we did. We are never able to find anything close to our favorite place in Maui, but this place is comparable and amazing! Fluffiest shaved ice just like snow, with the most delicious flavors that are fresh tasting and refreshing. Also for $.50 extra you can add cream to the top which is my ultimate favorite. Annie is so sweet! So far we've tried watermelon, guava, passion fruit, mango and blackberry. All have been fantastic flavors!
