My first time back since Anthony's was on the waterfront near the Star of India. I had an artisan salad consisting of whole spinach leaves, diced (seemingly canned)beets, boiled shrimp, candied pecans, and some cucumber and tomato. It was lacking in quality and flavor. My husband's portions were small, and my father's clam chowder was just okay. We expected high prices, but this time the food was not worth the price. Arrived to eat at 5:00. Waiter was prompt asking us if we wanted drinks. We were waiting for a third person in our party so got water to start. Each of us ordered a bowl of white clam chowder which was tasty but no where near hot enough. Waiter took mine back to reheat it. Much better. I ordered the sushi style roll which was a menu special. Way too salty. Our friend ordered fish and chips and the suggested asparagus got green beans instead. I think he should have been served bread but got none. Third person got fried calamari appetizer which was very good and a ceviche appetizer which was good but very small portion for the price. This was my grandmother's favorite spot when she came to visit from Texas. She thought the food was yummy, but mixed with the lake scene and ducks, the grand, under sea mosaic and the exceptional service sometimes she didn't want to leave. When ordering I usually have a hard time making up my mind- usually it's fish of some type, blackened grilled. I love the sides. This is a great little gem in the east county that doesn't disappoint. It looks like a truck stop from the road but once inside there's a lot to look at. From its own lake to the cave looking walls on the inside and the outdoor patio, you won't be bored. The waitstaff, well why wouldn't they love their jobs this place is popping there's a line waiting for the doors to open on a Monday! Now the food well it's delicious! From the creamy clam chowder or crispy Brussels sprouts, to fresh fish and sushi rolls, there's something for everyone. You won't regret it. read more

10/10, one of my old nursing residents at my job said he would always bring his old girlfriends here and now I know why. It is a beautiful location with great food and drinks. In remembrance of my nursing resident and after viewing the location ourselves, we decided to rent out their outside back sitting area to have our wedding reception/lunch here. It was filled with fun, love, and lots of duck feedings and the staff was extremely accommodating to our requests and edits. We really love the servers/managers there and there was an older Mexican woman as a server who we really enjoyed but I can't remember her name. 8/6/25 I went to lunch at Anthony's Fish Grotto today. I asked the server how the salmon reuben was and she said it was really good. Then I asked about the crab/macaroni salad and she said it's macaroni salad with imitation crab in it, and it's pretty good. All I can say is what a let down and what a rip-off. I paid $19 for a little sandwich on a small piece of roll. Like smaller than a roll you would get for a 6 inch Subway sandwich, with a micro thin piece of salmon that was barely a quarter of an inch thick that was super dry, with the sauerkraut, house dressing and swiss cheese. For $19 you think you'd get a nice piece of salmon, but no. Now let's talk about the crab macaroni salad. It was basically tasted like overdressed store bought macaroni salad that had 3 little pieces of imitation crab in it. At least, that's all I could dig out and maybe 3 little tiny olives that was also a total rip-off. They didn't even try to elevate it. It was horrible. I was so disappointed in my meal, but I didn't make a scene or say anything because of the person we were there to celebrate. The portion of salmon you get at California Fish Grill on their new $10 menu is at least twice the size of what I was served here. This is the third time I've been to Anthony's in the past 6 months because other people chose it It has been disappointing every single time. I should have just ordered the fried calamari appetizer (which was great the last time I was here) and called it a day. Showing up, this La Mesa classic is still as dope as it ever was and the outdated charm is exactly that, charming. I mean, the pond/lake/swamp, whatever this thing is, is simply a bit odd but awesome at the same time. Food was great as usual !! Had the halibut with mashed potatoes and rice . Crab cake for appetizer. The wine was yummy ' The food and the ambience is why they are still getting 5 stars from me . Wasn't overly happy with the server we had. She was pushy and not very friendly . She seemed rehearsed, not genuine . She had an air of coldness to her . My friend and I arrived when they opened and were greeted and seated outside by the pond. A little chilly but we had a heater close by. We love the pond seating. Our server, Becky, was wonderful. The food was very mediocre, and the accompaniments were budget products. The Sand dabs were coated in a very greasy flour coating and overcooked, the tartar sauce was a bulk-purchased sauce with excess mayonnaise and no character (it is so easy to make an outstanding tartar sauce). The coleslaw was covered in a commercial bottled dressing and the crab cakes (supposedly lump) were pasty and had more fillers than crab. The vegetables were overcooked and bland, and the scallops were overcooked (a crime) making them rubbery, served over a bed of overcooked spinach. Overall, it was not worth it. This is really too bad because the location is excellent and with a little bit of effort in the kitchen this could be a five-star restaurant. Our server was very attentive and really tried to take care of us but he had too many tables and as a result, ended up serving the wrong meal to the table next to ours. I was referred to this place by some of my tiki friends to try since I was in the area. We were seated outside by the cute little lake. They had a chocolate martini on the menu, so I was game. My husband ordered the clam chowder, and I had the ahi stack. Both were fantastic. Clam chowder was impressive. Love the decor and ambiance of this place. We loved it so much we came back a few weeks later with friends. Even though this place is fairly far from us, we plan on visiting again soon. read more

I understand that serving large groups is really tough. This is why I did not send the food back or request a reduction to our bill, as only one of the three dishes for our family was correct. First, the restaurant was really not prepared for a party of more than 8, and we had 16. Already a bad sign when you walk in, and you can smell burning bread at your table. No, they did not serve us burnt bread, but they definitely jacked up some loaves. The server asked if I would like another drink, to which I replied, "Yes, please. I greatly appreciate it". After about 10 minutes, she swings by and asks if I would like a refill lol. "No, just the beer I ordered a few minutes ag,o please." My dish came out incorrect and incomplete, but we had waited so long to get our food, I did not want to wait another hour. My daughter could not eat her burger because it was burnt and almost completely black. We left the burger open, out of the bun, so she could see how bad it was. She asked if we wanted a box to bring it home, WTH? The above was the best part of the night. It took over 30 minutes to get our bills straight. I don't mean 30 minutes to get our bill after eating, I mean 30+ minutes after getting the incorrect bills to get them squared away. There were a total of 6 drinks ordered other than water. Only 1 appetizer, and other than me asking for no mushrooms, all orders were straight from the menu. This was the second time we had eaten here. The first time the service was better and the food, although overpriced, was ok. Now the food sucks and the service sucks. read more

Been going there since 1964 as a kid it was alwas a special place to go as a kid and now it still is . Went to beat the mother day beat the crowd lol everyone else thought the same thing . Wait was short so not so bad . The waiter was great and the food all came at once and was hot and so tasty , the steamed clams are so good , the fresh oysters were fresh and so good and I like there double fried frys . The restaurant was cool, the ducks are cute and ambiance was nice but we waited 30 minutes for our food to be served and the food was kinda cold and hard. Our waitress was weird and was forgetting our food so we had our entrees before the bread rolls, and then would serve food to people who got there after us and chop it up with other tables for 10 minutes before checking up on us. Wouldn't even check up on us, I wouldn't care but to see the waitress serve other people after us and taking awhile cuz she's talking to other people while we haven't gotten our appetizers and sitting there for 30 minutes with no food was pretty annoying. We ended up talking to the manager and she gave us 50% off which was nice, but I think our waitress probably didn't pay any attention to us because we look young and assumed we wouldn't tip but we do tip! However if you're serving everyone but us and giving us the cold shoulder yea I'm not gonna tip 18%. We ordered water and ice tea and our waitress never refilled our drinks another waiter had to do that. 2 stars cuz the ambience was nice. They don't got anything for vegetarians $23 for a veggie pasta is ridiculous especially when it's mid. Obviously don't go to a seafood restaurant and expect vegetarian options I just went because my partner wanted fish and chips but at least make the vegetarian "options" cheap if ur not gonna bother cooking it properly. read more

Went saturday 4/19 with 2 friends. We got there around 545.. food orders not taken til just after 6. My friend who got the table before us asked for iced tea, server (lead server) came back with 2 waters instead as I was sitting down. I asked for sprite which he came back with before her iced tea to which I reminded him that she was still waiting for. Our 3rd friend asked for Shirley temple. He finally came back to get food order. To which we reminded him that the one friend was also still waiting for her Shirley temple. He took everyone's orders ... suggested to my one friend asparagus as a side to which she said yes. He asked if we wanted bread.. to which I said yes. At least 30 mins went by, no bread but then the server came out and said that they were out of linguine for the penne and clam dish, substitute another pasta it's fine. Food starts coming out. We all came for the clam chowder which was good but I got mine in a bread bowl, the bowl was super soft which seeing I paid more for.. hindsight wish I would have just gotten the plain bowl. My friend that got the seafood trio with asparagus commented that her shrimp was dry and the salmon was over cooked.. oh and the asparagus that the server suggested? Green beans. We had a show to get to and we'd already been there so long we didn't have the time to complain about anything. Overall... clam chowder... really good. All the other food... it was ok. I've been coming to Anthony's for over 60 years. Started as a child when my parents starting going there (when there was still the grotto in La Jolla), then to the one downtown and then to the original La Mesa location. The family has gone there every year, sometimes several times a year since the early 1960s. I have except for the time of the Covid closing. As soon as they were open, I went to show support and have a meal. The food has always been great. Has. Now, not so much. At least not tonight when it really needed to be. I was celebrating my 70th birthday. You really couldn't miss it as I had a sparkling tiara on my head with a big 70 and a sash that read Limited Edition 1954. The hostess knew right away, the parties at tables around me knew and *they* wished me a happy birthday. Apparently the server either didn't know or they no longer offer a free dessert on your birthday. They did last year as I have a photo. And the year before that. (Showing dressing on the side of the salad and a cloth tablecloth.) What has changed? There used to be cloth tablecloths. Not any more. Still cloth napkins and metal flatware. For now. They used to provide the salad dressing on the side (so you could pick out what you didn't want before putting it on your salad.) Not any more. This year a spoonful was plopped on top and what I got hardly provided enough once I mixed it, which I had to delay as there was some sort of weird thing in my salad I couldn't identify. Pale, some a bit green, some brown on the end and a bit dry. Pasta cross contamination? I picked them out and asked the server what they were. Carrots he said. They're not orange and they look really old. How old are they? Today he said. Needless to say they were all picked out as best I could and not eaten. I ordered the Filet Mignon with shrimp scampi as it was my birthday and I really wanted to splurge. the meal was supposed to be $46.95 according to the menu online and the menu I got. When I got the bill, it was $50. I ordered it with a baked potato, uncut. When my meal arrived the shrimp were piled on the filet, only three medium. The filet was supposed to be 6 oz but for $50 I expect to eat all 6 oz. Instead I ended up having to trim some fat and gristle. I ordered a filet specifically so I wouldn't have to trim anything. So 1oz of that filet ended up going in the take home box for the dogs. My baked potato was underdone to the point of being inedible and I sent it back. The second one was better but still not as good as I can make. Maybe they don't use Russets and maybe they just don't know how to bake a potato. Perhaps they figured butter, sour cream and chives can hide poor cooking but I eat my potato plain with just a sprinkle of salt. A good potato can hold it's own with nothing to disguise it. This was not a good potato. I usually eat my salad and roll with my meal but it was brought early. The roll was hot when it arrived and cold by the time my meal arrived. I've already expressed my disappointment with the salad. I ordered the large chocolate mousse, my favorite for dessert. And paid for it. No birthday candles, singing or anything. Yesterday I was at the Kaiserhof, wearing the same tiara and sash and every staff member that passed by or met me wished me a happy birthday. At Anthony's? Only the hostess and with prodding when I finally told her it was my birthday today. It's not like the place was busy. This was between 6:30 and 7pm and granted it was a Monday night but the place was still more than half empty. After six decades I have seen the decline. Now I know there is inflation and post Covid restaurants have had to do some cost cutting, hence the lack of tablecloths to save on laundry. But I think they are cutting quality a bit too far. I went there for a fabulous birthday dinner as I think 70 years old is a milestone to celebrate. I was underwhelmed. Next year? I will take that $70 and I will go to Iowa Meat Farms and buy a beautiful filet mignon. I will cook it to perfection on my Griswold cast iron griddle on my O'Keefe and Merritt stove, grill a dozen scallops rather than three miserable shrimp, bake some garlic bread, bake a Russett potato to perfection and make a green salad with lettuce, cucumbers, celery, carrots and more than the two miserable grape tomatoes they provided, top it with a generous dollop of blue cheese dressing and plenty of croutons. And I will have a feast, at my own hand, for less than $70. Will I miss being congratulated on my birthday? Maybe. But since I wasn't congratulated at Anthony's that will be a wash. And I will go to the Kaiserhof ON my birthday as next year it will be on a Tuesday and they will be open. I will get all of the well-wishes for my special day that I could ever want from their staff and a really good meal as well. read more

Although I live around the corner from Anthony's restaurant, I do not visit it too often; I am not sure why. Growing up, we used to go to their fish market counter on the left as you enter from the "Grotto", to take out bay shrimp cocktail smothered in a delicious cocktail sauce, with extra lemons, bread and oysterettes. We would also get the breaded halibut, which was plain but delicate and good. Afterwards, we always went out to feed the ducks. To this day, some of the Anthony's ducks fly onto my Property. The other night I went in on Wednesday after the December 8th 5:30 pm Mass for the Immaculate Conception at nearby Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church. I sat in one of the semi-circular booths in the bar, which is my preferred seating. Service is fair. The prices are somewhat high for the quality of the food and the presentation. That being said, there is a $15.00 bottle of Anthony's white table wine which tastes a bit like water but is acceptable given the bargain price. On the menu, I like the breaded Halibut or the Mexican style Red Snapper. The Bay Shrimp cocktail has vanished, but in its place, you can get a shreaded Crab Cocktail. The bread is not as good as it used to be. An after-dinner Irish Coffee was available, but the freshly-brewed coffee was weak and insipid. read more

We chose the cabana room which was very upscale, and just enough room for my family, and the kids were not in the way of other restaurant visitors. I only had to bring a couple of my own personal decorations, and everything else was provided. The server did a fantastic job hosting my party and the food was amazing. It definitely is more like a diner as oppose to a fine dine restaurant but it's situated in a nice area where you can dine next to their small pond. The many locations they had in San Diego with the Family Oriented Restaurant that was located over in the City of Lamesa was located behind the Grossmont Hospital. The Embarcadero Restaurant with some of the best romantic atmosphere you could have dinner outside with the best lunch they serve with the great service and some of the best prices you could find the best lunch. In the city of La Mesa there was the family oriented you could bring your aunts and uncles with the seafood bar and the great cocktails they Lamesa Anthonys restaurant it had more elegance and the chance for the kids to feed the ducks and the geese they have there when your table was ready, they would page your name. Anthonys was the best restaurant with the great welcome at the front door the servers many of group had the best knowledge of the food and the wine. Lamesa Anthonys is one where you could go and have a great lady's luncheon with some of the best homemade herbal bread and the many butters they serve. The many years that I had visited the restaurant that I had found the Lamesa was the one place that you could come and bring your kids with the weekends the many couples would come to dinner they would be waiting near the ducks for the table call or now serving Mitchell party of 7. The great history of Anthonys Restaurant has been one of the greatest places as a Yelp Elite you could come and have some of the best clam chowder the red and white. With the courteous service and the selection of plates you could have the best in Bay Shrimp Cocktail and the Coconut Shrimp which is the best. Anthonys is one that have some of the best family customer service and the at the Duck Pond that is outback makes the night even more relaxed and the one to be ready for a great dinner. read more

I've only been to the Anthony's at Seaport Village. That was a loooong time a go. I think maybe 30 years. It's long gone and I honestly miss the fish and chip boat with the fork you use as the mast. I've known about the La Mesa location but never made a visit. I'd see it's sign right off the 8 Freeway, never having the time to stop in. But at long last, an occasion to go. We had my moms 77th birthday lunch there. We reserved the banquet room which included a personalized menu. The room was separated from the rest of the dining area by a glass partition. It also had a nice view of their little lake. The whole restaurant was filled with rock walls and nautical themed items. It was a fun atmosphere. My kids really enjoyed it. We ordered appetizers and shared our different plates so we can taste everything. I have to admit, I think everything was delicious. The calamari had a crisp breading and the calamari was tender. The clam pasta was bigger than I expected. Is was creamy and had plenty of tasty clams. The burgers, yes my kids ordered burgers at a seafood place. They were huge burgers. My kids said they were really good. I had the fish and shrimp. Both were like the calamari. Nice breading and cooked to perfection. My only gripe was I didn't get any coleslaw. I didn't realize till afterwards that it was included. I just didn't get any. Kinda bummed about that. I didn't get to try the grilled tilapia and salmon, but everyone that ordered them agreed they were good. The accompanying seasonal vegetables and rice were also praised as a good pairing with the fish. Overall, I really liked everything from the atmosphere to the food to our awesome waitress. Doing a little A to Z restaurant challenge with my hubs. So we were able to checkout Anthony's located in La Mesa. Upon entry, you definitely get a more mature/older vibe. The atmosphere is calm and serene with a more 70s type of decor (carpet, green, booths, floral). We opted to sit outside because of the beautiful lake and fountain you can see from the entryway. We were seated at a cute little table for two right next to water. I loved the ducks swimming in the lake. It was all very tranquil. The hostess was a sweet older woman and our waitress was kind as well. The hostess left us with a very extensive menu that we spent some time going over. There's also a lunch menu on the back with a lot of handheld, salads, and seafood options. We chose the calamari for our appetizer, a cup of clam chowder for our soup, my husband ordered the QC fish and shrimp with crab and macaroni salad, and I had the shrimp Caesar salad. The table us comes with ciabatta bread and a sun-dried tomato butter. The calamari was very flavorful and an awesome sized portion and it came with two dipping sauces. The clam chowder had LOTS of clams and was thick and yummy (I did add some pepper). Not pictured The shrimp Caesar salad had lots of juicy shrimp. Definitely just a basic Caesar salad though. I added salt because it lacked lots of flavor. My husband enjoyed his quick catch and said the macaroni salad was tasty with red bell-peppers, crab, and olives. We spent about $90 for everything including 2 strawberry lemonades and a Coke Zero. Overall, the scenery was beautiful and glad we tried a different spot.
