Juan at Anthony's Shoe Repair is one of those rare craftsmen who seems capable of repairing just about anything made of leather. Most recently, he completely transformed my well-loved vintage bag. The black handles and trim (not leather) were badly cracked after many years of use so I figured I'd try to give it new life and a new pop of cognac-ish color. When I picked it up, my jaw dropped. It looked better than I imagined and gave new life to a bag I wasn't ready to part with. What impressed me even more is that this wasn't my first experience with Juan. A few years ago, he repaired my horse's halter and bridle--items that were both sentimental and difficult to replace. The repairs were flawless and held up beautifully. It's very rare for me to submit feedback unless the service is highly exceptional. This is one of those instances. My husband recommended this place as I needed to have a high end designer bag cleaned after having sat in my closet for years. Let's just say that the bag was in very bad shape. Juan said it cannot be cleaned but recommended that I have it dyed to restore its luster. I was very apprehensive as I was concerned that they may not be able to match its original color but after he showed me a couple of designer bags that they had recently dyed I was impressed and decided to have it dyed. I was totally blown away when I picked up my bag! Not only did the dye color match the original color (from the chain strap which was not damaged, you may discern the brand based on the "chain strap" description), the dye also had a shiny glaze to it which matched the original condition of the bag. I painstakingly inspected every single corner and angle of the bag, top to bottom, side to side, inside and out, and I could not see any traces of the bag being dyed. The color was a perfect and seamless match! The price is not cheap but I would honestly say it is VERY fair and reasonable especially given the amount of detail, labor, and quality that went into it in order to restore the condition of this bag. If you ever need a dye job, this place works miracles! This shoe repair place more than deserves this 5-star rating. I trust them 100% to do all of my leather repair/restoration needs from this point forward. They now have gained a loyal customer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! read more

Took a leap of faith and went to a new shoe repair place (the one I usually use is in west LA). Couldn't be happier with the results. Juan did the heel cap repair on two vintage designer irreplaceable shoes that I own. Not only were they able to finish this in a timely manner (over a holiday weekend), but the cost was low, and everyone I interacted with was friendly. I bright a part of women's shoes for a partial re-souling which is putting on new leather on the front half of the souls. His quote was $100.00. I went to Crown Valley shore repair next to Smart and & Final, and for the same job, he quoted HALF!! In over Anthony's.... I rarely take the time to write a review, but this one is worth it! I brought in an expensive purse/handbag that has not been taken care of properly (my fault) and picked up what looked to be a brand new handbag! Juan used a beautiful black dye to bring back the rich look & feel of the leather, polished all of the hardware; it looked brand new! I also brought a pair of my favorite black leather pointed flats - I damaged the tips climbing steps. Not only were the tips wrapped in beautiful, black leather, but new reinforcements were placed at the toes on the soles of the shoes and brought them back to life! Yes, I paid upfront and yes, it was on the expensive side. The items I brought to Juan were also expensive and of good quality. The shop has been busy for the 20 years I've lived here in Dana Point. Of course, you pay upfront - I forgot to pick up the finished product after two weeks and there they sat- waiting. And paid for. The craftsmanship is worth every penny! I was in town for a wedding this past Saturday. Leaving the mission church I realized my heal rubber was down to the metal. I looked for shoe repairs in the area. This shop was the only one that answered the phone and was such a kind polite gentleman. We quickly drove to the shop before the reception. He saw my desperate need of help and helped me right away. Took about 10 minutes and even glued a piece that was coming off from the bottom. I was expecting to pay a good penny and to my surprise he was so reasonable. Long overdue for this review as I've been coming here for years. As a petite, 5ft tall gal , boots can be tricky. They have to hit at the perfect spot on your leg. otherwise they cut off your frame. My Luchesse boots hit just a bit too high when first purchased. I almost considered returning them. Then I had the idea of having the top trimmed down. But could they really be trimmed down with keeping the original structure? And what about the loops? Sure enough, Juan was able to scale down the entire boot to fit me. Another pair of boots... the Louis Vuitton StarTrail ankle boot. For us petite girls you know those ankle boots can look bulky at times! I really thought it was a gamble with this one because they were so pricey, however I was so in love the shoe.., but again, Juan was able to trim a few inches off the top to give my legs some length. Not a single part of the boot.... from the details, design or structure were compromised. I also posted another pair of just random white fashion boots, Juan scaled down for me. I took two pair of shoes in to have a half sole put on them so that I wouldn't slip as these shoes had leather thin soles. I went to pick them up and they were a mess, glue all over the bottoms and they charged me $79 a pair to do these. Sam's shoes in San Clemente only charges $35. When I picked them up I told them I was dissatisfied and he said. "Lady if you're not happy then don't come back!" Very rude! I asked for my money back and they said no. This is not Anthony's Shoe Repair from Corona del Mar, folks! This is owned by someone with the name of Jesmann. I asked for a discount and he was offended by my request so I said I guess you will loose my business, I have been coming here for 12 years and he said "I don't care". I was recommended to this location by a local. I believe the reviews I saw were not fair. So, I believed my friend over the reviews and I'm glad I did. I brought in a pair of Cole-Hahn shoes with one of the soles torn away at the toe. I wanted to glue it together and call it good. But having tried that before with different shoes without success, I visited the repair shop. I expected the same glue process at the shop as I might do. At the shop I was told the shoe will be glued and sewn. Sounded good to me. What I got was that both shoes were replied and sewn from toe to heel. This is a great improvement in repairs And I will get many more years from these shoes. I am very grateful that they took the time to repair the shoe(s) much better than I thought I was going to get. I've gone here a few times now and always a little over priced in comparison but always try to support local and small business but it's gotten to a point of no customer service, had a faulty repair and the way I was treated in asking them to fix the repair that didn't happen, he tried to say they didn't fix it and was getting aggressive so I just left after he got really rude, luckily my credit card reversed the charge no problem and already found a new cobbler and he said the work done was very pour and wasn't surprised he broke after one wear. Might have to drive a bit further now but will gladly do that for someone who appreciates the business and takes pride in their work and honors a repair. read more

The work was okay BUT shoes weren't even polished when they were returned (most of the time this is included in services) so we were charged an additional $13 for polishing. AND price went up from what was originally quoted. Not good business. And, to round things out (not in a good way) they told me they would call as soon as the shoes were ready and they did not. I'm not sure if they selected the wrong place or what, but I've lived in DP for six years and have used Anthony's on several occasions and have NEVER been disappointed in the price or the quality of the repair. Like seriously go there any give day at noon and see the number of people in line to pick up their shoes, purses, etc. He is great at what he does, humble in his work, fair in his prices and works very hard as a small business owner to ensure his customers are happy. For one or two individuals to bring this rating down is a shame. He's trying to make a living and has provided excellent services to me and my family for the last six years. This place was recommended to me by a friend. I should have heeded the first red flag...being required to pay in full without seeing the completed job. The problem is that I was shown very nice smooth, soft black leather which would be used to replace my torn purse strap. Juan explained to me that it was the only leather he had and would be expenslve...$110.00 dollars expensive. Since I trusted my friend and I felt that this little place might be a diamond in the rough I gulped and paid it. 2nd mistake was allowing my husband to run the errand of picking up the completed purse. WHOA! The strap was redone in cheap vinyl which Juan insisted was leather when I confronted him in person. Furthermore he lied to my face telling me my husband had no receipt...which is not true. I asked for the owner, who is conveniently never there. Juan refused to give me at least some money back. I asked for 50 % refund. I thought that was reasonable, but he refused. So at this point I became really furious and raised my voice. Talk about a man with lousy customer service skills. I'm only 5'1" yet Juan apparently got rattled and started pointing to his security camera. Was he trying to intimidate me? What a weenie. Then he told me he was calling the police. Good grief! How idiotic can a guy get? Because he can't handle getting chewed out and doesn't know how to help an irate calm down, by at least trying to figure out a solution. So, basically, Juan at Anthony's Shoe Repair is a liar, and the business ripped me off. If I want to pursue getting my purse fixed I'll have to pay more money elsewhere. I'm mad at myself too... It is difficult to find a good shoe repair shop these days. I've used Anthony's several times and they have done a good job in repairing shoes as well as my luggage. My only issue i have had is it sometimes takes longer than I would like to get the work done (although the last time I was able to wait for 20 minutes to get my luggage fixed and they did a great job). read more

Brought a pair of boots here around 1:30pm on Saturday. All I needed was a heel replacement. They didn't look busy and the guy told me it would be ready on Wednesday. Wednesday, seriously??? Where's an Instant Shoe Repair when you need one? This repair takes less than 15 mins elsewhere. I pleaded w/him since I don't live in the area and I sure wasn't going to stick around a few days just for these boots. The guy finally accepted to repair them and have them done by 4:30pm. They close at 5pm so he insisted I return at 4:30pm otherwise I'd be S.O.L. Total damage was around ~$13. Not bad. Wasn't too pleased w/the customer service but at least they got it done. I wish I could attach pictures to tell the world about this very talented group of shoe repairers... So I got a puppy, nice cute wonderful... two years later she's still enamored by leather shoes, sandals, heels and shoe laces. I wear a size 11 and I'm flat footed so saying that shoe shopping is difficult is an understatement. These guys have taken half chewed heels and replaced them. Anyone can do that. These guys have literally repaired inches of damage on boots, replaces toes/fronts of shoes, replaced straps on sandles.... the list goes on and on. I've been going to them for about two years now and have made my favorite boots last forever!!! They are affordable and prompt about when they say they'll have things done.
