I had a broken tooth filled on my upper right side. I was on time to my appointment and was left to wait for 20 minutes in the waiting room. When Mary (the denist) came to talk to me she didnt introduce herself and I later found out who she was. While she gave the local anesthetic she hit the main nerve in my face. I have never felt any pain like that before, my right side of my face immediately went numb and couldnt see out of my eye for a few seconds. Needless to say, I was a wreck and cried through the rest of the procedure. After, My whole right top jaw was in pain for the following week while I was not able to eat any foods warmer or colder than the temperature of my mouth because the tooth was so sensitive. I called Mary she said it was normal for the first week. (It is not normal to be that uncomfortable says other dentists) This lasted for a month. I went to see another dentist who took an xray and said Mary had not drilled out all the rotten part of the broken tooth as well as not having filled the tooth completely so there was space between my tooth and the filling so the gases trapped expanded and contracted with temperature change. This had caused a lot of new damage and rot and lots more money in repairing my tooth by a second dentist wanting to do a root canal. After all this, Mary did refund me the money for the poor job she did but the money I spent repairing her poor work and damage cost way more than the refund.

My reason for the one star is for their deceptive and apparent unnecessary add ons to procedures. I was told repeatedly that I had two crowns that needed to be changed. When I called to confirm my appointment, I was told that I was having an additional crown done at an additional $590 out of pocket cost to me. When I confronted Dr Ballis, I was told that maybe because of COVID masking, that I misunderstood. This is deceptive and a grab at additional costs at the expense of the insurance company and patients. Make sure you get everything in writing when you go to this practice. If you don't, you will find additional procedures and costs added to your file.

I decided to transfer the entire family over to his practice, including my then 5yo and 3yo. I was so worried about going from a kid-based dentist to a grown up dentist. I shouldn't have even wasted a minute worrying. Tina scheduled them both at the same time. We arrived and off they went without even a thought. They did wonderfully (a completely surprise to me) and haven't had a problem going back. Yeah Laurie, the technician, and Dr. Ballis! The office looks unassuming from outside. But when you enter there is a grand staircase and lovely decor that greets you. This building hosts other offices as well. Dr. Ballis' office is soothing, with calming classical music playing in the background. (Admit it. Your dentist plays old 60s or 70s stuff. Right?) My husband has made the switch and we all have been very happy with the services Dr. Ballis does. I don't have any complaints and now I just need to get my husband to make his appointment for the Zoom teeth whitening. Can't wait to see that glistening smile.

(I have had cleanings every 6 months my whole life as my teeth are very important to me.) The hygienist Carol was amazing. Friendly, professional and welcoming. After my cleaning and x-rays, in walks Amanda Henry... unprofessional and intimidating....even though I did need some catching up with my dental work she couldn't bring herself to present it in a positive way so that I would not be overwhelmed. She was 'astonished' at all the work that needed to be done and said she would not trust the work of any other dentist and that my crowns all needed to be redone. I was gut punched and felt I must have done a terrible job of taking care of my teeth. Curious about her next approach, I signed up for the consultation. (They have a conference room right there in the office where they regularly meet with their patients to present the thousands of dollars for their treatment plans) The office manager presented the treatment plan which was $24,000. The dentist Amanda was only present for the first few minutes to once again tell me she had not seen such a bad case. Then the 'office manager' proceeded to tell me they were going to redo crowns in six phases in groups of 2's and 3's. They offer sedation as I would be more comfortable since I would be in the chair for several hours as her staff would do a lot of the work and she would be present for some of the work. I had to ask as we went down the list for her to explain the problem and the work that was going to be done on each tooth....had to ask the office manager.....I was told this treatment couldn't wait and should be done at once....they have financing available!! I have since been accessed by a different dentist and have had one cavity fixed with one crown to fix...nothing else urgent. Please do not put yourself through this...dentistry gouging at its best.

This is further proven by the fact that they were ADAMANT that I owed 600$ above my max payout of dental insurance. However, when I reminded them that I came in with a flyer that said $150 for a whole bunch of the stuff they had billed my insurance for and gotten WAY more than $150, suddenly, I was in the mid $300 owed. I reached out to my dental insurance and found out they are charging more than the norm and the insurance covers the norm. Most offices, will write off the difference knowing the higher price is ridiculous anyway. However, they seem to feel quite justified that the VIBE of the office, the little touches like pens, cookies for a company anniversary will be what keeps people coming back. This is true if you are only interested in working with the rich and fabulous. However, if you wish to work with regular people who have kids in college, mortgages to pay, and other economical needs then paying more for some silly gimmicks is marketing, not BETTER DENTAL CARE. I liked both Drs. I honestly only had negative experiences with the front desk staff. The dental care was not ANY better than I used to received at Family Dental Care in South Chicago. I honestly am upset at myself for not reading these reviews first.
