    09.01.23 Antler Academy $12.50/person

Fun experience! [North Pole AK] When we returned a second time to Santa Claus House on a Friday we noticed a sign that wasn't there before. The sign read Antler Academy. This is a visit with Santa's reindeers for a 30-min feeding experience. How often do we get to see up close let alone feed reindeers... and not just any reindeer but Santa's reindeers! you know, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We stepped inside the pen accompanied by staff members and we interacted and fed the deers. So fun seeing reindeers (caribou)... I thought these were pretend animals only heard during Christmas time LoL! I've never seen one until this visit. Located next door to Santa Claus House in the big red barn. Admission is $12.50/person. The pen is open for feeding tours from Memorial Day through mid September but visitors can view the reindeers through the fence all year long. We learned a lot about reindeers from the knowledgeable staff (I think her name was Rebecca). Like did you know... Reindeers do not have upper front teeth (we were shown how to feed them like tipping the cup towards their mouths)... also, they are the only deer species where females have antlers too. Our visit was in early September. 'Tis almost the season for reindeer to occupy people's minds... Review #3135

It was a fun experience, but we probably wouldn't go way out of our way for it. But if you're looking to kill some time, this is a nice way to do it. The Antler Academy welcomes guests into the pen with the reindeer caretakers. A quick safety tour covers details like "Don't grab onto their antlers," and other common sense pointers The staff are very well informed and are happy to hare their wealth of knowledge - if you ask. For the most part they stand back and let you enjoy the close encounter, but if you engage them you'll find they are most pleased to teach you about these interesting animals. We learned that a reindeer's four-toed feet have dewclaws, and that the entire hoof has evolved to spread out to distribute the animal's weight like snowshoes. They're also well adapted for digging in the snow. Staff will provide you with a little cup of food pebbles for the reindeer to nosh on. Much like us anywhere we go, the reindeer are there for the food. No judgement. They eagerly come up and start reaching for the cup and we just pour it into their mouths. They're very accustomed to doing this and it goes quite smoothly.

I loved going to the reindeer academy it's right next to the Santa Claus house which is a must see. When you enter there's a nice gift shop with reindeer items. If you want to pet and feed the reindeer it's $12.95 for adults and less for children. It may be your last time to pet reindeer out it's an experience you'll remember.

Each one was expertly prepared to be the best it's ever been. I dug in, fully expecting to enjoy every single bite. But, for some strange reason, it was tasteless. In an attempt to find flavor somewhere I ate more, yet it made no difference. My discontent and frustration eventually dissolved into relief once the meal was over. The issue definitely wasn't for a lack of trying. I did what I've always done on the same schedule, such as putting up decorations and shopping for gifts. I drove around to look at other people's decorations. I listened to Christmas music and watched Christmas movies every chance I got. I attended events like my town's annual Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony, my son's school Christmas pageant, and Christmas Eve church service. Still, no matter what I did, the Christmas spirit eluded me. I actually entertained the idea that the alignment of the stars could have been to blame. Now, I'm no expert in astrology so I can't say whether some planet entered or exited one house or another. Or, maybe something else was or wasn't in retrograde. Who knows? I only know that this season's energy felt off. Despite my disappointment, I remain optimistic that future Christmases will embody all the same magic and joy as ones from the past. So I'm throwing in an extra star because haven't given up hope.

To me it's a celebration of the beginning of the winter season and a lead up to new beginnings in the year ahead. Thanksgiving is the best holiday in terms of food. However, Christmas is the winner when it comes to music. Not only that but Christmas has carolers! Now that's something special that no other holiday has. Oh gosh, I love those carolers!! When it comes to music it is hard to pick a favorite. I like the classic songs like Irving Berlin's White Christmas but I also love Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas is You! and Taylor Swift's Christmas Tree Farm is a great new song as well. I think Christmas music should continue until New Years Eve but the radio always stops it right at Christmas. There are only a few New Years songs anyways and they don't really get played. Christmas is a time for feel good movies. My personal favorites are It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol. And also, the Hallmark Channel has a great selection every year. Honorable mention are those ugly Christmas sweaters although I think they are rather cute! Winter coats, wreaths, Santa, hot cocoa, gingerbread houses, candy canes, kissing under the mistletoe, presents, the pine cone/cinnamon/cloves smell, and Christmas cookies definitely warm my heart. And of course, it's not Christmas without the beautiful decorations and lights everywhere. An uplifting sight at the darkest time of the year. And, of course, the beautiful Christmas trees in people's houses and offices. I love decorations and people and stores go all out with the Christmas decorations more than any other holiday! While Christmas might not be at the top of my list in terms of my favorite holiday of all time, it sure is a nice time of year that is so "merry and bright" and filled with "holiday cheer"!
