I observed people leaving table groups and more people coming to the table to join the group. This experience was definitely better than my first time at their original location. My catfish and grits were delicious. Those grits were perfect as they were creamy and thicker. The catfish cooked perfectly and great size filets. The fried green tomatoes were a hit. Not overly breaded and a great flavor. The drinks were also good which had never changed. I believe it may have been a day where happy hour was the whole day so it appeared that the table drinks weren't being considered in a timely fashion compared to bar orders. I think I waited about an hour for my second drink. The waiter was kind, apologetic, and continued to check in along the way. He even showed us when he placed the order so we wouldn't think he was lying. The peach cobbler was also good but very sweet and peach heavy. I like peach cobbler but prefer the crust and just a little peach juice. There was a live DJ which played really good music. Definitely a vibe place with good options.

Co workers wanted a "cheap" drink, and let me tell you it was far from it. A hard liquor glass was almost $9 and for a place like this that is just, well: A DIVE, that shouldn't of been the case. I was rather surprised but at the same time I thought maybe its becuase we were dressed rather conservative and this place seems to cater to a less dressed crowd. Water Hole, hmmmm we should've really thought of that before entering do rained libations. But on the plus side, they serve a hell of a great fried chicken wing! Of course you have to order the food and really know what southern fried chicken is, yes they don't play when it comes to the fried chicken. It's been one of the least known spots to have it made this way. But again, is the bar part of this joint what I would keep coming back to? Nope.

There are a couple of ways to order. There is a kiosk or a QR code to order and pay or if you are using the "InKind" app you will order from the counter. Once ordered there is table delivery. The counter staff was very helpful. There is a large comfortable indoor seating area and also outside seating both with views of the North Branch of the Chicago River. This women-led restaurant in Chicago is renowned for its mouthwatering barbecue, brisket, and soul food sides, making it the ideal spot for a meal on Juneteenth. Once I realized it was the closest to me and offered a plant-based option, I knew exactly where I wanted to order from. I ended up ordering the smokey joe sandwich (vegan sloppy joe sandwich), with a side of mac + cheese, and a sprecher soda. Whether I'm using Grubhub or Uber Eats, I love ordering online because it's so convenient. I also want to praise my delivery driver for arriving at a reasonable time with my order and meeting me right in front of my residence. Grateful to have had a smooth online ordering experience because the likelihood of me ordering online again is very high. As for my order, my first response after my first bite of the vegan sloppy joe was, "Mmm, that is good!" If you are a foodie like me, then you know what the next few minutes--or, better yet, seconds--consisted of. Yes, I pretty much devoured that vegan sloppy joe, leaving nothing behind but what was left on my fingertips. The last time I had a vegan sloppy Joe was a few years ago in celebration of my birthday, and trust me, it wasn't as good as this one at Soul & Smoke. It could easily be confused with real meat if you aren't aware that it is vegan. I saved the side order for last, which was that delicious-looking mac and cheese. Mmm... "Oh my God!" was my initial response after my first forkful, which was lightly seasoned with a delightful taste. I must say it was the perfect side for the vegan sloppy joe. After my last bites, I had the slightest grin on my face, and the only thing on my mind was that I will definitely have it again in the future. The sprecher soda - cherry cola was the perfect complement to my meal. Introduced to me by Soul & Smoke, I am so pleased with this award-winning craft soda from Milwaukee's oldest craft brewery that I will be on the lookout for it in the future. I would gladly order from Soul & Smoke Avondale again, whether online or whenever I am in the area. With that, I am happy to share my endorsement of it with you all here on Yelp. I'm not sure if it's a hidden gem or not but I haven't seen this spot mentioned on social media a lot. It is teeny tiny so MAKE A RESERVATION before you go, you may not get seated without one. First of all that frozen peach sidecar needs to be added to every menu at every restaurant in America! It was really that good! It was sweet and strong and just so tasty. My whole table enjoyed their food and it hit even better the next day when we warmed it up for leftovers. I got roasted chicken with greens and Mac and cheese. That honey mango chutney glaze (or whatever it was) was FIRE and not to mention the meat fell right off the bone! The Mac and cheese was also fire! I tasted my home girl's salmon bites, again FIRE! Not to mention the portions were huge! My only critique would be on the greens. They weren't bad but it had an after taste to me like it was possibly cooked in beef broth, so it wasn't my favorite. Definitely add this spot to the top of your list the next time you're in Chicago!

They didn't disappoint me. Our server Jamal was really nice and made us his cousins immediately. It did take them 10-15mins for a server to stop by. With that we ordered everything at once, not knowing how long things would take. We orderd drinks, shrimp scampi, cilantro lime wings, chicken Alfredo, beef short ribs with mashed potatoes, greens, and sautéed broccoli. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted great! So why a star loss?? Because they charge 18 or 19% gratuity charge and then the server requests a tip on zelle, cashapp, etc. THAT'S ABSURD! I can't stand places like this. My standard tip is 20%. But if you add a service fee dont ask me for nothing else! Wth! Definitely enjoyed my food, but I wouldn't be regularly because of that foolishness. I'm not a petty diner either, but that's insane. I knew it from the reviews, but yeah it's distasteful. Rsise your prices if you feel you need more to pay your staff fair wages. Insane!

Only the branzino slightly missed the mark. It could have been filleted a little more carefully (I found several small bones) and it was slightly overcooked. But it wasn't bad by any means, and all the other dishes were perfect with the cornbread being a huge standout. It was moist, sweet, and came in a huge portion. (It could've easily served 4.) The restaurant itself is beautiful. Had I not known the history of the building, I never would've guessed that it was previously a dog daycare. I will note that we were unfortunately seated at a table that had a significant wobble. The service was both leisurely and disjointed. We were seated for 15 minutes before a server arrived. Food took an hour to arrive after ordering, and there was no thought given to proper pacing (our entrees arrived almost immediately after our starters). There were three different servers tending to our table, but tracking down any of them was a challenge, and they rarely checked in on us of their own accord. All told, our 4-course meal took 2.5 hours. Despite the downsides, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner, and we will be back. If you visit, just make sure not to have any urgent plans after dinner.

It's the perfect spot for a large group, a fantasy football draft, game day, or any sports-watching event. The television screens are massive--there's virtually no chance of missing a play. Our server was fantastic. Friendly, relaxed, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. I also loved that she had a little robot assistant helping deliver food. It struck the perfect balance between technology and hospitality without losing the human touch. She guided us through both the menu and bar selections, and from there everything just kept getting better. The first thing we tried was the Soul Roll, and wow. Imagine all your favorite comfort foods wrapped inside an egg roll and fried to perfection. Brisket, mac and cheese, greens, and yams--all bundled together and served with a sweet yam syrup dipping sauce. It sounds outrageous because it is... in the best possible way. The ribs were tender and practically fell off the bone. The links brought just the right amount of spice. The fried chicken was crispy, juicy, and delicious. The greens and yams were flavorful, and the baked beans? Absolutely magical. As for the bar, it was a mixed experience. I ordered a lemon drop and was told they don't sugar the rim because it creates a mess on the floor. Personally, a lemon drop without a sugar rim feels a little incomplete. However, the bartender did earn some points back by serving it in a highball glass instead of one of their smaller martini glasses, explaining that we'd actually get more of the cocktail that way. Fair enough--I can appreciate that kind of honesty. If you're visiting Chicago and looking for great BBQ, put Wilma's on your list. Come hungry.

My party of four visited for Sunday brunch, and the restaurant was basically empty when we arrived. The escalator also wasn't working, which wasn't the best first impression. We ordered fried wings, rib tips, and drinks, but our food didn't come out together. For a table of four, it's disappointing when everyone isn't served at the same time. The biggest disappointment was the lemon drop martinis. After one sip, they were far too tart and overly citrusy for our taste. The glasses were still nearly full, so we politely asked if they could be remade or exchanged for a different cocktail. We were told that all alcohol sales are final. While I understand restaurants have policies, I was surprised there wasn't any willingness to accommodate us, especially since we had barely touched the drinks and simply wanted a different cocktail. As for the food, the fried wings lacked seasoning, and the rib tips were rubbery and didn't have much flavor. Being from Texas, I enjoy BBQ where the meat stands on its own, so I asked for the BBQ sauce on the side. Unfortunately, even with the sauce, the rib tips didn't have the quality or flavor I was expecting. The staff was polite, but the food quality, drink experience, and overall execution didn't live up to the reputation I was hoping for. I hope management takes this feedback as an opportunity to improve because the restaurant has potential.
