The ambiance was great, the bar was spacious, and the service was top-notch. Everyone ordered something different, and of course, I had to sample a little bit of everything from my family's plates just to see if the hype was real... and let me tell you, nothing missed. From the excellent customer service from our waiter Abraham who indulged in our foolery amongst our table , to the food suggestions I am grateful for that . First visit to Chicago and was looking for good soul food. I will admit the food was delicious! However it was an extremely long wait. It is an extremely small place. I think if you only have 3-4 booths you should place some kind of limits on how long you can sit at a table so that you can accommodate more customers. When we arrived we were told 15-20 minutes. We waited about an hour. Then we were told that we should just sit at a table near the door (that was not clean by the way) because if not we may not even be served. At this point we are 30 minutes in. I was not interested in sitting in these high chair right by the waiting area. We were eventually seated. It was a booth that was basically made in half so you it is semi-private and you are dining with people who are not in your party. Enjoyed the meal, however was not expecting a 18% service charge for a party of 2. The long and short of it, is the food was great. But I don't think I will be returning here. After seeing this place all over my Tik Tok, I knew that I had to visit Soul Vibes as soon as I landed in Chicago. Despite arriving close to closing time, the staff was very accommodating. For my drink, I had a Lychee Strawberry Margarita, which was really refreshing and tasty. For my entree, I had the chicken wings with mac and cheese and cornbread. While the wings were standard, the mac and cheese and cornbread didn't quite hit the mark. Mac wasnt giving baked mac. It just seemed like regular macaroni. Our waiter mentioned that since we arrived late, the dishes might not have been prepared as they typically would be. Overall, my friends and I agreed that the appetizers stole the show, and I'd definitely return just for those Lobster Deviled Eggs and Soul Roll! The drinks were great too. My experience was disappointing from the moment we walked in. The hostess was unnecessarily rude and unwelcoming. Before allowing us to sit at the bar, she asked for our names and phone numbers without providing any explanation as to why that information was needed. To make matters worse, she then told us we needed to go outside and come back in because she claimed we smelled like cigarette smoke. She headed straight to the bar to make them herself and when I tell you EVERY drink was strong, fresh, and flavorful... I loved it! My business partner then whispered, "You know she's the owner, right?" I said, "No way!" She was so kind, down-to-earth, and personable. When she came back, she said, "Let's start with some appetizers," and recommended her favorites. We went with the deviled eggs with lobster bites and the jerk chicken egg rolls and they did NOT disappoint. Every bite was fresh and delicious. For our entrees, she again highlighted the top sellers and her personal favorites. We ordered the blackened catfish and the stuffed salmon. It didn't take long to come out, and when it did, it was beautifully presented and piping hot. Everything tasted incredible, and the service was consistent, fast, and genuine. I couldn't write this review slowly enough, but it had to be written. I arrived at Soul Vibez 15 minutes after they opened and was seated immediately at the bar as a party of one. I placed my order right away when the bartender greeted me, hoping to ensure my food arrived in a timely manner. Not long after I was seated, I overheard the hostess telling newcomers that the wait was an hour and a half. Looking around, I noticed the bar and tables were full, with everyone waiting on their food. Over the next half-hour, I sat among three couples (parties of two) and watched as their food arrived, leaving my area in the center bare, begging for a plate to be placed in front of me. I remained patient. However, when the last couple near me--who had been seated and ordered after me--received their food, I began to feel tense. The bartender checked on them and assured me that my food was coming out next, which eased my tension momentarily. As more time passed, I noticed that everyone inside the restaurant had received their food except for me, including larger parties of six. They were even taking ready-made plates of food to patrons seated outside on the patio who were waiting for to-go orders. I finally asked the bartender what was taking so long. She eventually brought out part of my food, but the hot honey and cornbread came out later. As I began eating, the rest of the bar closed out and left. The bartender offered to discount my bill due to the wait, which amounted to a measly $5 compared to the total of my original order, tax, and mandatory service charge. The food was fine, but the long wait time and the feeling of being undervalued as a customer diminished the experience. Let's not forget what soul food is meant to represent.
