Food is really good but the service isn't. If you're looking for good soul food this is a nice option but the service made it seem like they were bothered we were there. Can't say I'll be back but worth a try if you're in the area

Small restaurant, we didn't have reservations. Quite surprised they weren't crowded in a Fri evening. Perhaps the location. They have 9 booths with a couple bar seats. Each booth seats 4. We ordered oxtails with string beans and sweet potatoes. Short rib with dressing and mac and cheese. Fried green tomatoes and deviled eggs for appetizers. The deviled eggs were too sweet for me. Fried tomatoes were ok, came with a sauce that reminded me of a sweet gravy. The dressing and string beans came out cold. We had to send them back to be warmed up. Mac and cheese was good. Not the best but doable. The oxtails and short ribs were delectable. They charge $2 extra for EVERYTHING. If you want cranberry sauce, jerk sauce, anything it's $2.

MAC and cheese sweet potatoes with pot roast

I recently visited this Black-owned soul food spot and wanted to give a fair and honest review--especially as someone who considers themselves a serious soul food critic. Benn eating it all my life. This place is pricey but not unreasonable. Let's start with the fried green tomatoes: delicious! They came out crispy, flavorful, and were a great start to the meal (though oddly, no plates were brought out with them--even after I asked). Still, no biggie--they were good enough to overlook that. I ordered the pot roast with macaroni and cheese and sweet potatoes as sides. The pot roast was seasoned well but a bit too salty and not as tender as I would have liked. Not bad, just not great. The mac & cheese hit the spot--creamy, cheesy, and comforting. The yams were a little too sweet for my palate, but I could tell they were made with love. Now let's talk ambiance--it's a darker, more intimate space with loud, energetic vibes. Not the place for quiet conversation, but great if you enjoy a lively atmosphere. I did notice some patrons sending their food back because it wasn't hot, which is never ideal and definitely adds to food waste concerns. But let me tell you about Chris the waiter--he was the highlight! Super attentive, friendly, and somehow managed to keep a warm smile while juggling the entire room. A true gem and definitely a reason to return. One thing to note: they tack on a 20% gratuity automatically. I'm usually not a fan of that, but if it goes to servers like Chris, I'm all for it and won't argue against it-Also, when you get your to-utensils , be ready for the "plastic or silver?" question--I say just hand over the utensils and keep it moving. It doesn't need to be that serious. Felt like I was charged for dishes if I dine in and need reservations please give me silverware PLEASE DO NOT ASK Lastly, the drink I had was fantastic--strong, BUT not too strong well-balanced, and definitely a high point. All in all, it's a solid experience, especially if you're supporting local Black-owned businesses. They take reservations, and while there are a few quirks to iron out, it's worth checking out. I'd be wondering if I'd go again-- but soul food is one of those things or foods that's just hard to judge because nobody makes it like your momma and everything on the menu we got at home but definitely support this one it's worth a try!!!!!

My friends and I enjoyed ourselves to the fullest. The food, service and the ambiance was top notch. Our host Star was gracious and attentive very professional as well as the other staff. We couldn't have asked for better service from the beginning to the end. I'll be bringing other friends and family to this location. I wouldn't recommend the Hyde Park location despite the parking the attitudes are horrendous trust me.

    Oxtail and Grits

The food was good. I had the oxtail and grits, the oxtail were very tender. The restaurant in total had a very nice seating selection. Kinda on the smaller side but very nice vibe for the culture.

I'm going to preface my review saying that during our visit for dinner to the restaurant this evening, the host did inform us right away that despite the fact that they have a fully stocked bar in plain sight, they do not yet have their liquor license and so are not serving alcohol yet. They allow customers to byob but then charge 25% fee to drink it in the restaurant. We came to dine at 6:30 on a Wednesday, the place was not packed. It wasn't empty at all, but there were open tables. The host said we could not be seated until our entire party (of 3) arrived. Not a fan of that policy when your restaurant is not poppin with a line around the corner. We were taken to a dark corner they said is the waiting area, away from the main entrance so we couldn't see when our other party member arrived unless we stood facing the door. We were seated, at the same empty table that was there when we first arrived, and were greeted by our server who was friendly and attentive. He made recommendations for us and checked in on us throughout our time. His service was great. We started off with the jerk chicken tacos. The jerk chicken was well seasoned and had a nice jerk kick, but not served with any jerk sauce which I tend to prefer. The tacos were topped with shredded cheese, onions, a little cilantro and a sweet and slightly spicy sauce on the side. I wished there was a slaw or some sort of refreshing topping instead to offset the kick of the jerk chicken, but they were ok. For my meal I ordered the catfish with Mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. The catfish fillets were a good size, props to them on that because many restaurants skim on the fillets. However, the catfish dinner with 2 sides is $32, so for that price for catfish, they should be substantial! That's very high for catfish and two small sides. Unfortunately, the first fillet I ate was fine, but the second fillet was inedible- way over salted/over seasoned. The Mac was pretty good, very creamy. Better than other soul food Mac that I've had. The mashed potatoes were not memorable. My friend had the lamb chops, she said they were very good. Not cooked medium, but nonetheless good. She had the cabbage and Mac and cheese sides; she did not like the Mac but the cabbage was very good and tender (I tasted it too). My daughter had the catfish also, hers was also over seasoned so she only picked at it. She got the Mac and greens as her sides. The greens were not seasoned at all but had plenty of turkey in them. They did not have sprite, and did not have desserts because their person was out sick. Unfortunate. The prices are high. I'm including pictures of their "planned" drink menu, these are club prices. And the entrees are definitely high for this establishment. There's nothing elevated about the eating experience that warrants these high prices, so that feels like a misalignment. I will also say the Host needs some work on being welcoming and not paying extra attention only to the male customers who are dining in. I hoped for more but unfortunately my experience was not overwhelming. Don't think I'd return given the fact that the food was not amazing, and the prices are very high for an underwhelming meal.

This restaurant lands in my Top 10 in Chicago. I have a few friends who were visiting Chicago and wanted the locals experience. Jordyn's Soul Cafe was one of the restaurants I had on the list for outings and there was no disappointment at all. The cocktails that we ordered were of the "if I were to mix this at home" variety. They were not heavy-handed with alcohol and they weren't watered down. Goldilocks would have approved. We started with fried green tomatoes, fried okra, and deviled eggs. Whatever dipping sauce came with the tomatoes was a very good option. We also used it for dipping the fried okra. With all of us being from the South, we totally approved of the deviled eggs. As to the entrees, here is where it became obvious that the chef does not play. Plates that came to the table were lamb chops with macaroni and cheese and broccolini; salmon with sweet potatoes and string beans with potatoes; chicken lasagna; and catfish with spaghetti and greens. Yes, it took awhile for the entrees to come to the table, but that was assurance that nothing was microwaved and rushed to us immediately after our orders were taken. When we arrived, the hostess informed us that the kitchen was behind and that there was going to be a wait before we were seated. I appreciate that kind of up-front acknowledgement, which meant that we adjusted our expectations accordingly. Nevertheless, Jordyn's exceeded our expectations once we sat and got started.

The food is 5 STARS but overall the entire dining experience was not Great! The food is seasoned to perfection and beautifully golden brown fried catfish. We made a reservation and came early still didn't get seated until 44minutes after our reservation time. We didn't receive our food for an additional 61 minutes after ordering. Our appetizers came out with our meals. Why would we stay because we were invested after waiting all that time and hungry. There were so many people waiting and it was very hot humid in the restaurant. The ceiling fans were not on and they were covered in dust. One of the food runners recommended special sauce for my mom's okra. I asked what's in it he would tell me just it's special. I tried one bite my tongue started to feel weird. I asked the server she didn't want to tell me either and I told her my allergies. Then she told me there is pineapple in the sauce guess we should tell people. Luckily I did not have more than one bite. The food was really over priced $106 for (4) catfish fillets, (4) small sides, and (1) side of okra with special sauce. 20% Gratuity automatically added and then the server had the nerve to ask for additional tip...it says 90 minute seating but we were waiting longer than 90minutes.

Jordyn's Soul Cafe was recommended by the mister. I had to try it out. When I walked in I was greeted. The ambiance was great. It felt like a place you would see on social media with the cool backdrop to take pictures. They do accept dinning in as well as take out. I had the Shrimp Alfredo, Spaghetti, Fried Chicken Special with Green Beans and Dressing and Soul Rolls. The Shrimp Alfredo was very good. The Fried Chicken was seasoned to perfection. I enjoyed all the sides except for the spaghetti it just was not for me. I've had Soul Rolls before, but these were different. I really enjoyed the soul rolls as they gave me an opportunity to try a different side as well. Overall, I think the food was very good for what I got. The mister has gotten some different items and has enjoyed them. I do think it is a little pricey for what you get but overall the taste was there.

Mixed review for this location. The food tasted great, came out hot and portions were reasonable. The location itself has a chill ambiance and great for a casual brunch. The service was sketchy. The host was tending to incoming customers, serving drinks and cleaning tables without a smile. The bartender kept leaving the bar to serve drinks, while our server seemed to overlook our drink order. I eventually cancelled my drink. I prefer to have my drink prior to receiving my food. When my wife got her's it was watered down. There is a 20% gratuity added to the total bill, which is partly why I cancelled my drink order. Overall I would come back for those Soul Rolls and Pot Roast Empanadas as a take out option. The catfish was also tasty.

    Oxtails

Took a girls trip to Chicago and Jordyn's did not disappoint. The oxtails were top tier and the cocktails were tasty. Definitely a must when you're in Chicago! Located in a cute little neighborhood with a few other shops surrounding it. Definitely on the smaller side. Recommend making a reservation.

Fried catfish dinner with yams and collard greens

Last night my friend and I had dinner and drinks. I already had a disappointing experience at the Hyde Park location, but my friend told me the Grand location was good. The ambiance is amazing with a dim, but chill vibe. Our server Tim was cool and attentive. I'm not much of a drinker but my cocktail was good and hit different Lol. The catfish dinner was fried well done and seasoned to perfection. I didn't need any hot sauce. The greens was really good. Taste just like how I and my mom (RIP) would make it. The yams was good and sweet. My friend had the spicy wings and jerk chicken tacos. I tried a piece of her chicken which was good. Not overly spicy. The Mac and cheese wasn't the star of the show. It's gave it a box Mac and cheese taste and I've ordered the jerk chicken tacos to go, but I didn't care for it. Maybe it's the shells they use, but I have shells at home to compensate. Overall I enjoyed myself. I will definitely visit the Grand location again coming from this lady that came from out south suburbs to check out this out west gem.. salute!

Y'all know I love a good happy hour and the one here doesn't disappoint! From Tuesday- Thursday, from 2pm-6pm, you get to try some of their menu favorites for just $7 A PIECE!!! In this video, you can definitely tell what was my favorite - The Mac and Yams Soul Rolls! YALLLLLLLL!!!! They were amazing and the dip they came with was I wasn't a huge fan of the deviled eggs because they were sweet and the jerk chicken tacos had a sweet sauce on them that I would definitely asked to be removed, if I got them again. Honorable mention to the lamb chops! They aren't on the $7 happy hour menu, but they were available for $15 and worth it. Since they're BYOB, grab a bottle of your favorite liquor and go check this black owned spot! Tell 'em that Bri from Planes and Plates sent you!! On a random Thursday, my business partner and I decided to grab lunch/happy hour to catch up. I specifically wanted to support a Black-owned business, and she instantly said, "Soul Vibez." As a frequent TikTok viewer, I was excited to finally try it. We arrived right when they opened at 1 PM and were seated in a small cozy booth in the back. Our server came over cheerful and welcoming, asking if we'd had a chance to look at the menu. I told her it was my first time, and she smiled even bigger, sharing all her favorite drinks and how to get the best value. We decided on a tequila flight (blueberry, leche, and strawberry). She headed straight to the bar to make them herself and when I tell you EVERY drink was strong, fresh, and flavorful... I loved it! My business partner then whispered, "You know she's the owner, right?" I said, "No way!" She was so kind, down-to-earth, and personable. When she came back, she said, "Let's start with some appetizers," and recommended her favorites. We went with the deviled eggs with lobster bites and the jerk chicken egg rolls and they did NOT disappoint. Every bite was fresh and delicious. For our entrees, she again highlighted the top sellers and her personal favorites. We ordered the blackened catfish and the stuffed salmon. It didn't take long to come out, and when it did, it was beautifully presented and piping hot. Everything tasted incredible, and the service was consistent, fast, and genuine. The fact that the owner was our server made the experience even more special. I would've never known if my business partner hadn't told me. When we acknowledged it, she just smiled bright and said, "Thank you so much for being here and choosing us." I immediately replied, "See you soon, sis!" I will definitely be back. The ambiance wasn't quite what I expected, but the service and food made up for it. I ordered the Caribbean stuffed turkey leg, which came with pasta, spinach, a couple of jumbo shrimp, and a turkey drumstick. The dish was flavorful and satisfying overall. My only criticisms were that the spinach was chopped so finely that it was hard to really taste it, and the turkey drumstick seemed smaller than expected. I was hoping for a meatier drumstick, but most of the meat was concentrated toward the bottom of the bone. For dessert, I had a slice of carrot cake, and it was excellent. I would have loved for it to be served warm, but it was still moist, flavorful, and a great way to end the meal. I also tried the fried pound cake, and unfortunately, it was a miss for me. It didn't taste like pound cake, and honestly, it wasn't a very good cake in general. It's not something I would order again. One thing I noticed is that the menu doesn't appear to offer appetizers or salads, which might be something to consider if you're looking for more variety before your main course. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. While there were a few things that could be improved, the stuffed turkey and carrot cake were enjoyable, and I'd be willing to come back and try something else on the menu.

I was highly disappointed. My food came out cold and wasn't good. It was a simple breakfast and it still failed my taste buds. Rude Hostess, the prices weren't worth it and this place is in the need of a makeover. Raggedy tables and chairs. Only thing impressive were the pictures on the wall.

I've seen this place and have always wanted to try it but just never had the time. I ordered the meat alone. No platter with sides, just the meat so I can't review the sides. I ordered a 1/2 pound of brisket and the sliced jalapeño cheddar sausage. I believe it came in a 5 ounce portion. The brisket was wonderful! Very moist, great smoked flavor and a perfect fat cap and bark. Very, very tasty. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was equally as good. It wasn't at all spicy, but it had great flavor. I don't usually use bbq sauce on my brisket or sausage, but when I didn't request any sauce, the gentlemen behind the counter suggested I just try the mustard sauce with the beef. What the heck, I tried it. It's probably one of the best Georgia style mustard sauce I've had. It's got that mustard flavor with that vinegar twang, but besides some black pepper, I can't tell what other spices are in it. But it really is good. I still like the brisket without sauce, but this mustard sauce in my opinion is really good. I see other reviews people complaining about the cost of the bbq. Most people don't understand what goes into creating great bbq. The cost of meat, the cost of wood for smoking, the time (12 to 16 hours for brisket). These places aren't just throwing this meat on a roller grill and waiting for it to drop off the other side. Great bbq is a work of art. Soul and Smoke dished me up a work of art. I will definitely eat here again.

My favorite dish is the Shrimp and Grits. On Friday I decided to try the Gumbo and was pleasantly surprised. I'm so funny when it comes to Gumbo, I prefer seafood gumbo but if the Rue is solid, I'm a happy camper. Highly recommend!

We waited like 5 minutes for a table but were seated at a small two person booth/table. Our server was pretty busy but attentive and knew a lot about the menu. We ordered the wedge salad and the yellowtail sushi roll. It was spicy and had a nice touch of yuzu on top and the fish was relatively fresh. The wedge salad had plenty of dressing on it and it was pretty good. For the main we got the Chilean sea bass which was very sweet and savory. The scallops had a perfect sear and they were pretty very rich and buttery. The broccolini was steamed and fresh. He finished off dinner with the crème brûlée and the Keylime pie, both of us we had to take home because we were so full. I think overall this experience is pleasant, not something very memorable, but I'm happy I've came here!
