Well... Here's my story and why I'm giving Antrim's 5 Stars. Earlier today, my daughter's purse was stolen in an auto burglary and inside her purse was her driver's license providing our home address, as well as the key to our house allowing the thief to come over for a visit to help himself out to all of our valuables. Needless to say, we needed to re-key the exterior doors to our house immediately. The problem I quickly ran into is that every lock and key shop I called today is closed on Sundays. To make matters worse, it's Mother's Day, so I figured that would make it even harder to find someone available to re-key our exterior doors. Growing up in Pasadena, I've always remembered that Antrim's was THE place to go for locks and safes from all my friends (even though I personally had never used them), so when I searched on Yelp for a locksmith, I immediately checked them out first. Unfortunately, the details of the business showed Antrim's is closed on Sundays, so I didn't give them a call. I then looked up all the other lock and keys shops in my local area, and found out they were all closed as well (and some had bad reviews). Out of desperation, I called Antrim's even though I knew they were closed, and to my surprise, a guy named Alan Stelzer answered the phone. Alan politely told me that Antriim's was closed, and he reminded me that today is Mother's Day. I told Alan that I was between a rock and a hard place, and everybody I called was closed. Alan then asked me how long it would take for me get to his shop, and I told him about 10 minutes. To my surprise, Alan said he would meet me at his shop and he would help me out. I met Alan at Antrim's, and he promptly re-keyed my locks and made me brand new keys. To make a long story short, I was so impressed with Antrim's service today (they were closed and it's Mother's Day), that I just had to write this positive review. P.S. The cost was more than I expected, but then again, you get what you pay for. read more

I recently had the misfortune of losing the original keys to my condo unit, and leaving the duplicates inside the unit. In short, I locked myself out. Stupidity has no remedies, so thank God for Antrim's. Their prices are steep, though. They have been around for 50 years, so I figure they must do a great job. Yup, they are an institution in Pasadena. On the day I called them, they were busy. They promised me a 2-hour window and voila - there was the locksmith in 2 hours! The guy had a hard time unlocking my door only because I have one of those modern hard-to-open locks. He stayed there for almost an hour, replacing the lock chamber and providing me two new keys. Manager/owner (not sure who he was, older guy) was extremely unpleasant when I went to pick up our new keys. Other employees seemed fine, if tense. Who could blame them? I can't help but wonder what the cause was-honestly, what I needed to do there (pick up keys we had made) seemed so straightforward and uncomplicated, and he was so awful and strange and difficult, that I was left more bewildered than insulted. The whole time I've been with Speedy, my darling Toyota, he always needed me to jiggle the key in his ignition before we could take off. At first 2 seconds would do it, then about 5, and then all of sudden, Speedy decided that 5 seconds of foreplay wasn't nearly enough, and demanded 5 MINUTES of patient jiggling to turn him on. Uh oh! Trouble in paradise! I called around -- my mechanic, the dealer, Triple-A -- trying to figure out the cheapest way to get Speedy back on track. Everyone thought I'd need to get it re-keyed, or the ignition replaced, or various stuff that wasn't quotable but sounded expensive. My mechanic (who is awesomely honest) indirectly indicated that if I brought Speedy in he'd probably be calling a locksmith anyway, so I decided to cut out the middleman and go straight for the locksmith. Yelp reviewers suggested Antrim's. I called and talked with Alan, who suggested a few things I could try at home. When these didn't work, he said to bring it in and maybe it would work if they just clean out the lock, which would be free. I managed to get Speedy down there and although the cleaning didn't work, they created a new key from scratch for $25. I picked it up the next day and voila! For the first time ever, Speedy is ready to go at a moment's notice! I got them to make 4 copies, and each worked perfectly right out of the box. They also cleaned out Speedy's door locks without charging. Yay! read more

I brought in a mid-century furniture key from the 1960s and they custom-made duplicates for me. This was a strange-sized key, hollowed out in the inside, and they found blanks and custom cut and sanded them by hand. The keys worked the first time. Each key was $30. Not cheap, but when you have cabinets that only close by locking them--you need them and an expert that can make them. It took a bit of time, as I caught them in a middle of their move, but John kept me up-to-date and called regularly to let me know the status. Very friendly people with great customer service. Highly recommend for custom needs. read more

Anyone who drives along Foothill Blvd. in Pasadena recognizes the sign for Antrim's. That's a ho hum, until it's understood that this is THE PLACE, My front door is an eclectic one---4 boards, weathered and varnished, held together with black iron strapping, a handcrafted iron knocker in the shape of a lizard created by an artist who was raised in this house, and a black Schlage medium heavy door handle no longer manufactured. The door handle also houses the key mechanism. Over the years, even with judicious maintenance, the lockset was deteriorating. On my own I had been looking for a replacement for the door handle, something that would fit the existing dimensions of the handle; at the same time, not looking out of place as a member of the front door. I struggled with this problem for a long time, gazing at the displays at Crown City Hardware, hoping for sources of inspiration. Eventually, I brought my ASUS with photographs of my front door and the measurements of the door handle to Antrim's. This procedure was a recommendation from my contractor. Unfortunately, this was not a good day at the front desk, but understanding that I said, "How I should I behave? Should I call next week?" I could intuit that this was indeed the place, and that I needed patience. When I called Antrim's the following week, I was set up with an at home visit. Looking at a few catalogues Alex, the technician, and I decided that there was an appropriate deadbolt which could join the other players on the front door. It was a matter of waiting about another week for the special order. Another home visit for Alex to install the deadbolt as well as cleaning out the existing lockset, and the presentation of a new heavy key to fit both locks. Voila! The procedures were handled efficiently, From both sides of the front door, I feel secure. read more

I guess some people think Alan is a bit rough and ready. I would say he's a "realist" gentleman of the old school and if you treat him with respert he will do likewise. In any event they know their trade in an old-fashioned, hands-on, seen-it-all way. and they have a phenomenal number of key blanks, including weird, old, etc., plus they are honest. Dan of Antrims Lock and Key paid us a call yesterday to change exterior locks on our house. He was wearing a mask but wore no gloves. When he first came to our door, I asked him to step back and wait while I found the cats and put them away. He did that. I thought he would stay outside and not come inside because when I called Antrims, I said I didn't want the worker to come inside our house. At one point I told the worker and my husband that they were getting too close. When it came time for us to pay the bill, he stepped inside the entryway and observed that he used to be cautious like us but now he has decided that he doesn't need to be so careful. He touched our table in our entryway with his bare hands. I was shocked but didn't say anything. Fortunately I was around ten feet away from him. My husband was wearing a mask. When he left, we cleaned everything he touched. Now we are hoping we don't get sick. I am giving Antrims three stars because Dan does very good work. I just want to make sure if someone is cautious about the virus (I am cautious because of my age and underlying health conditions along with my husband), they know what to expect. read more

Even though Antrim's is NOT the closest locksmith to my house, I go there when I need lock supplies. I had a fellow at my house today who was installing new door handles and I wanted the brass escutcheons of the deadbolt to look new and shiny like the new brass door handles. That got me in to a lot of trouble because my existing deadbolt had a broken piece and to fix it (didn't want to get ia new lock and gave it rekeyed because all the locks are keyed the same) he took parts from another same manufacturer's unused lock I had. One was a single deadbolt, the other a double deadbolt but then the screws didn't work because apparently the screws for a single are different than for a double!! So off to Antrim's and when I showed her the screws he was using, she said these look like a kwikset single deadbolt. SHE KNOWS HER STUFF! She "loaned" me a couple of screws in different finishes and, voila, one worked and I later went back and paid for the merchandise...because I'd forgotten my wallet, in the interest of time because the guy was at my house trying to fix the lock and HE NEEDED the screws. Thank you Antrim's. My house is now locked and all is good! read more

While Antrims was okay many years ago, they are NOT okay now. Some extremely rude woman has taken over, and hangs up on customers, like me. I wanted to purchase an extremely expensive lock, as mine was just STOLEN by a known criminal. I wanted to ask if I could have the lock shipped to me, but rude woman hung up on me, telling me to hire a handy man? To buy another lock from them? Fortunately, there are other dealers that sell that lock. It is a shame that they shut their customers that way. They obviously do not need any more business. read more

What can I say about a company that has been in Pasadena for over 50 years and is family owned? They charge a little more to make a key, but you don't have to come back and have it "adjusted". They do damn near anything involving locks and safes. They stock everything under the sun (you haven't seen the upstairs stockroom, I have). Where else can you get a 100 year old skeleton key duplicated? They have no problem doing custom orders. I needed a replacement cylinder for a 30-year-old Motorola 2-way radio cabinet. They pulled out a Chicago Lock and Key catalog, figured out which one of the 100+ cylinders I needed and ordered it. I had it in 2 weeks (it had to be shipped from Chicago). I took pictures of both sides and when I texted him, he called back saying "before you send a picture, look at the picture." I told him you old fart, I sent you two it takes time to go through. Needless to say, I wont ever call on him even if I have to leave my doors unlocked and risk a burglary. Id rather deal with robbers than this old bison. Ummmm, I love there service just wish Alan could educated his clients when something is not understood or when he uses his locksmith terminology. I called, regarding a stiff lock, he advise to use power graphite, I did not know what power graphite was. I asked him "what it that", his replied was, "ask anyone there and they should know, there are smart people there, not that you are not smart but your smart in what you do ", I felt a little offended but at the same time I laugh it out. So I asked around my company...and no one knew what powder graphite was. So beside him calling me stupid....they are a great company, we always called and use there services. read more
