Dining as the sole Caucasian representative in any establishment is a sign of promise. One left turn through the sliding doors of Saraga Grocery and this pearl sits waiting. Comprised of some communal bench seats and one round table, to dine-in is baptismal. While you sit scanning the space, it's evident that English is held secondarily to the vast majority nearby. Places like these ignite my desire to persist in learning. Like a Pabst Blue Ribbon or roadside Waffle House, this experience isn't for everybody. Gifts of peace and low prices are the sweet reward of other's inability to enjoy the gritty side of life. Expect the same crew holding it down here, with the biggest of smiles radiating from the cashier. How can there be a top 100 restaurant in Indianapolis that I don't know about? I saw that Asian Smack was on Yelp's Top 100 Chinese restaurants. So we jumped in the car and found our way down to the address, which is inside Sagara Market. It's a food stand inside the market! And it's on the top 100 list? It's far from upscale or fancy. The clerk is friendly and tells us to look at the menu. The meals look different from the usual options at my local carry-out. I hear the noodles are made fresh so I asked for something with noodles and the clerk recommends the Beef Noodle Soup. And I also order the Garlic Eggplant. She tells us to sit. There are a couple tables. A huge bowl of soup comes out in about 10 minutes. She brings two smaller bowls for us to share the soup. The soup is filled with beautiful noodles, beef and bok choy. The soup is hot, spicy and delicious and not salty. We love it. The Garlic Eggplant comes out soon after as is super hot with white rice on the side. The eggplant is soft, spicy and flavorful. This is the best eggplant dish that I've ever had. There's way too much food for two people, so I get a to-go box. On my way out, I grabbed a Chinese pancake (stuffed with green onion) to go. The pancake is kind of a hand pie. It's tasty. So the food is a definite 5 stars. The service is super friendly, but basic. The atmosphere, well let's just say that there's a definite street vibe. I'm guessing most people pick up to-go. The parking lot is atrocious - an ice covered mess. I'm still giving Asian Snack a 5 stars it is the best Chinese that I've had in Indiana, for sure. This place has been on my list for a LONG time and I finally tried it! I wish I had looked at more pictures on Yelp to help guide me with ordering. I asked the gentlemen taking orders what he recommended, but his dominant language was not English and he had a difficult time understanding me. A very kind customer came over for a few minutes to try and help translate and he actually recommended a few things. We ordered the spicy fish soup, steak buns, pork sandwich and the bean cake. The spicy fish soup was my favorite out of everything we ordered. There are many other interesting things I would like to try. After not being able to travel for so long, we made a little trip to Saraga Market. The international grocery store offers fruits, veggies, snacks, meats, cheeses, teas and candies from around the world. It's awesome. It also as a little Chinese restaurant in the front of the grocery. Asian Snack is literally a hole in the wall in this grocery store. When we stopped by, there were tons of handmade buns set out that looked really beautiful. I ordered the fried beef noodles and we only had to wait for about ten minutes. The noodles and sauce were supppppper good and didn't hurt my stomach from too much oil. Check! The beef however was super fatty to the point that there were chunks of fat. This place is located inside Saraga International grocery store, right across from the produce section. I ordered the spicy fish soup which came with a generous portion of perfectly cooked rice. The soup wasnt too spicy. Nowhere close to even a serrano level but just enough to give it a kick. Its loaded with veggies that werent overcooked. Highly recommend. The chive pancake was loaded with chives, cooked well. It had a bit of a seafood flavor IMO, FYI. Their hot chili oil is fantastic!!! Not too spicy, crisp chili, and you can taste the addition of herbs. They put the oil, soy, vinegar, salt, and sugar on each table and theres a water cooler for customers to help themselves. This is a small, hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant inside Saraga market. It's by no means fancy but the food is authentic, super tasty, and come in generous portion sizes. We usually get takeout but they offer a few dine-in tables as well. Our favorite thing to get here is the griddled fish slices - fragrant and intensely flavorful. This dish is executed excellently and always a home run. All you need with it is hot white rice *chefs kiss*. The other dish we got this time was the grilled lamb with cumin. They definitely don't skimp on the spices with this one! The lamb isn't gamey at all and the accompanying onions and green bell peppers were a great combo. The mapo tofu is also delicious here. They add quite a bit of peppercorn which makes it tasty but also potentially overwhelming for those who aren't used to it. Overall, this humble spot is a great option for authentic Chinese cuisine. The closest thing I know to true Asian street food in Indy. Bao Si (Rice flour steamed buns) are a staple on route to subway and portable. These are chinese breakfast with vegatable or pork ball inside. Also popular here is the Beef Noodle soup and Lo Mien Zu Ro (Beef Fried noodles) which is also one of my favorites. The location is hard to find, in a supermarket, not strictly a food court, the price of the food is acceptable, the taste is not pure Chinese food, but modified using local tastes. This is located inside the Saraga grocery store on the left side when you walk in. It doesn't look like much but they make some very delicious food at very reasonable prices. Shredded pork with smoked tofu - it has a light smokey flavor. Lots of vegetables too. I asked for them to add spicy peppers for me bc I prefer spicy food and they obliged willingly. Griddled fish slices - it's quite spicy but not unbearable. I could taste a hint of sweetness in the dish. The overall flavor was good but I wasn't sure what kind of fish it was. They serve a huge range of classic comfort Chinese food that includes pig ears, noodle soups, rice dishes such as fish in hot oil, amazing wings, etc. Many of the foods are what traditionally Chinese people would order; asian snack is really a hole in the wall that seemingly teleported into Saraga from China! Asian Snack inside Saraga is back open! I celebrated their re-opening by ordering a delicious Jiang Bing, which is listed on the menu as "Chinese Breakfast". Think of it as a Chinese invention that is part burrito, part crepe, and all delicious. In the middle is a deep fried dough stick called youtiao, which is a common breakfast in mainland China. This helps hold the Jiang Bing together. They will add some spicy sichuan sauce request. read more

This little hole in the wall (barely an exaggeration), is just to the left as you enter Saraga. Seating is very limited, so you may want to consider getting to-go or sharing a table with strangers. When we're feeling lazy, we often order a large amount of steamed buns and freeze them to warm up at home (they warm up nicely in a microwave). The limited menu is similar to northern Chinese cuisine (I think their signature snack is from Tianjin). One thing that is fun to try is their freshly made soy milk. This hole-in-the-wall is likely the best Chinese food you will get in Indy. The beef noodle soup is the best I've had outside of Taiwan or homemade. You HAVE to try this when you come here. It is seriously to die for. I also ordered a chive pancake and it is so nostalgic for me. My mom used to make these, and they are ridiculously good here. The prices are also so cheap! I got the beef noodle soup and the chive pancake for $10 total. A steal!! Also this restaurant is inside Saraga supermarket. There is not a lot of seating, a few small tables that seat 2-4 and one large table that can probably seat 8. It is super convenient to do your grocery shopping here and sit down for lunch as well. We love Asian snack for the authenticity. This isn't American Chinese, so don't expect to find general tsao's chicken here. Before I met my husband (who is American Born Chinese), I really hated "Chinese food", or what I thought was Chinese food. I couldn't stand the deep fried meats in overly sweet and sticky sauces. I thought it was all icky. That's because I wasn't exposed to true Chinese cooking, which is now my favorite type of food and What you'll find at Asian snack is the type of food you'll make in a Chinese household or get at a family gathering. As close to China as it gets. Let's face it, you're sad Szechwan Garden is closed and so am I, but don't fret- Asian Snack is here to save the day. Think of Szechwan Garden as your fancier authentic Chinese restaurant and Asian Snack is your everyday, neighborhood diner. The food is just as good, (maybe better) but you're not paying for big tables and fancy (read: any) decor. After living in China for a year, I was homesick for an authentic experience. American Chinese restaurants are fine, but they don't scratch that particular itch. You're getting the real deal, friends- crowded small tables, chopsticks wrapped snuggly in their bright red wrappers on the table, hot water dispenser in the corner, black vinegar within arms reach for your 饺子（dumplings). (None of these are meant to be negatives by the way.) AND the food is perfect. Head into Sarraga and hang an immediate left. You can't miss it! Do it the chinese way and order the amount of dishes you have in your group plus one if you're hungry. I recommend the eggplant (鱼香茄子), dumplings, and green beans. I wasn't blown away by the steamed buns (包子), but everything else was excellent. The portions are generous and the staff are friendly. read more
