It took me a great deal of time to consider this review. This original situation occurred back in July, but I wanted to make sure enough time passed so I could write a level-headed review.
In order to explain the score, I need to tell you a bit of a story.
Three years ago, I moved to Arizona. Being a former athlete nut, I've been to a variety of gyms and workout facilities before I moved. Given the variety that Arizona offers compared to my home state, I was a bit overwhelmed.
Lo and behold, Anytime Fitness recent opened up near my location and was the answer I had been looking for. Being introduced to the friendly individual working on hand (For professional reasons, I'm going to keep all my encounters with employees nameless.) and was given a tour of the very beautiful and diverse facility. I immediately signed up and paid for everything up front for a full year and a half contract.
My overall experience with the facility during my membership was nothing short of fantastic. The staff on hand was not only friendly, but more than willing to offer me training advice or suggestions when asked about. The facilities themselves are practically immaculate. While being smaller than some of the gyms I've attended in the past, they did a great job spacing out the sections and because of the location the facility generally only has a handful of people at a time. Or at least when I was there.
Roughly 20 days before the expiration of my membership, I went in to the facility to talk with an individual on hand about terminating my membership. There was a possibility with my work that would result in me moving again, so I wanted to make sure I had cancelled in advance to avoid any complications. During my process of signing paperwork for leaving, I had asked the gentleman on hand if I would be changed any additional fees after I left. He had called a manager and was told that I wouldn't. After I was done, we shook hands and I left happy. This may of been my best experience with a gym in the 12 years I had been using them.
Sadly, this is where things started to go south. Several weeks later, while on vacation, I find out that I owe money to a company I've never heard of before. Doing a bit of detective work, I find out that apparently I owed additional money to Anytime Fitness. Completely confused by this turn of events, and frustrated that I have to take care of this on my trip, I contact Anytime Fitness in order to discuss. After talking to the employee on hand, I am transferred to the on-duty manager. I told her about my previous conversation with the employee on hand and am confused as to why I am being changed more money when I was told I wasn't. She was incredibly polite, and worked diligently to find me an answer. Several phone calls later, I found out I was charged because of the period of time I chose to cancel. The fee was paid and the situation was ended.
Several days later, after I had gotten home from my vacation and reviewed some of my paperwork, I had called back to inquire further. After being told by the employee on hand, who had contacted his manager, that I wouldn't be charged any additional fees when I was closing my membership I assumed that was that. This seemed a bit out of the blue and unprofessional, and I wanted to get an understanding as to why. Once again, I had talked to another employee and manager-on-hand. Both were incredibly polite and wanted to get me answers.
Then, I talked to the owner.
Immediately hostile and defensive, the owner was where my experience was completely tainted. I kept asking questions about the situation and with each questions, the more defensive he would get and the more Irate he was sounding. It finally boiled down to him stating that because with my contact, I had checked the auto renew box. Despite the fact that I was still under my previous contract and the auto-renew hadn't had a chance to take place yet, but since this wasn't done a month in advance I was charged.
This completely blew me away as nothing of this was even remotely mentioned during my signing process or while I was leaving. While I had checked the auto-renew option, you would think that the staff on hand would notice this and inform me since I was inquiring about any additional fees. Instead I was treated like an idiot and had to be charged in order to find out. Furthermore he blamed his employee, the one I had signed the leaving paperwork with, as the reason it happened. It isn't my responsibility to make sure your staff knows the rules of your establishment. I don't blame the employee for it, he was great. I blame the poorly trained staff which falls directly on the owner. After fifteen minutes of going nowhere, I thanked the owner for his time and he told me he would talk to the employee and get back to me. He never did.
A fantastic experience ruined by a terrible owner who has no understanding of customer service or support. read more
