The 24-hour availability is really what does it for me. Not the cheapest gym in town, but they have to finance keeping the lights on around the clock. Some of the equipment is showing it's age, and in my opinion should be replaced sooner rather than later, but most of it does what it needs to. Busy peak times but if you go at night/early in the morning you've basically got the whole cardio section and the light weight room to yourself. Most people go for the heavy lifting. Disappointing... they lure you in on the website with false advertising and claims of free trail only to find out you have to pay fee on top of fee before you even decide on a membership or not. I honestly don't understand why this place has 4 stars. This is by far the most dilapidated Anytime I have ever worked out at. This location is really close to my home but I refused to transfer this location as my "home gym." The interior looks like it hasn't been touched since it opened with the exception of a newly painted wall. The lockers are literally falling apart. The tanning bed is always broken. The equipment is old. Also why does every location I've been to in the greater Milwaukee area only have one squat rack?! I originally signed on in Madison where I rotated between 6 really nice gyms which was worth the $45 dollars. If I went to sign up and this was the first gym I would have picked a different company. First, there is a special place in my heart for people who watch food & cooking shows while they exercise. That shit is dark. I love seeing it. One thing I don't like at the gym is someone trying to talk to me. I thank the staff at Anytime Fitness, The Farwell Chapter, for granting me solace. I did not sign-up at this location (As an Anytime member, you can use any location worldwide. So they say.), so the staff on Farwell never had the opening to pitch me personal training or tanning or some other add-on service that I will never use. One dude gives me a knowing half smile-nod, the rest of the staff acts as if I'm invisible. Well done. I would never make it through one session with someone staring at me while I exercised without the irritation bubbling into a fuming rage. If trainers competed against rather than cheered for their trainees, I might consider that a scenario where I'd work harder to be better. But if you watch me or encourage me or critique me, I hate you. Leave me alone. This goes for everyone at the gym that I don't know from the outside world. I'm listening to a podcast. Plus, these places are in the top five for being the most 'self-conscious state' inducing arenas of modern life. All social interaction will be interpreted as hostile. Or some disguised attempt at judgement. Let's all stay at least an arm's length apart and keep your grunting to yourself. So, the staff earns extra points for their aloofness. The gym is just fine. Totally standard. They aren't really missing much, but it is not a pricey place so don't expect swanky digs. A few patrons don't know all the proper gym etiquette (put your shit away, don't use multiple areas and items at once if it's busy, STAY AT LEAST AN ARMS LENGTH AWAY FROM ME). But that is usually only an issue at busier times (3-7pm usually seems high volume). And in this Universe there are always a few weirdos in a large sample size. I saw a review or two complaining about sales tactics. I've only spoken with one employee, once, at a suburban location. We basically discussed math. So it wasn't an issue. I went with paying for the entire year in one payment because the discount then worked out to about $33 per month. Plus, after the year ran out, they simply bill my credit card on a month-to-month plan at that rate. Forever. No fee to cancel. So I recommend that. For now. I find it difficult to trust any large company, so they may change their tune. But $33 per month for 24 hour access at hundreds of locations (that I would come across) seems pretty solid to me. If you see me there, you can say hi. But only at arm's length and if you reference that you know why I flinched at your greeting. And that we have Yelp in common. I'll thank you to keep it at that. I like the layout of this Anytime Fitness. There are plentiful machines and every single one always is in working order (at least at the times of my visits). The equipment, bathrooms, and general spaces are always very clean. This gym is in a central location for East Side residents. Parking in the UWM public structure is free on Sundays. This Anytime location is open 24 hrs. Simon is an awesome club manager!!! He is so helpful and friendly. I have briefly met a couple of the trainers at this facility and they are very welcoming as well. Because the gym is half underground, I have absolutely no cell reception and there is no wifi. If there is wifi my phone can't find or connect to it; every once in a while ProwlNet pops up but I can't connect. It's kind of a bummer as I usually listen to Pandora/iHeartRadio/Spotify when I am on a cardio machine. Overall a great space and location. If I can't make it to my home location I usually stop here! read more

I stopped by to check out this place since it seems to be the only general-purpose (i.e., non-yoga, dance, martial arts, etc.) fitness center in our current neighborhood. The young woman who showed me around was nice enough, but it only took about 5 minutes to see the entire mini-facility. They have the basic stuff, but everything seems a bit shabby and grubby. Plus they want you to sign up for a long-term, all-club commitment with a $99 activation fee. Since we'll only be here six months or so, the salesperson-instructor did offer me a "special" $50/month basic rate, and she offered a waiver of the $99 start-up fee. Still, that seems way too much for what this sad little place has to offer. Single-club memberships at much better operations like LA Fitness cost half that much. It also seems weird that the place is only attended in the afternoon. Sure, you can go "anytime" by swiping in. But man, I'd hate to get pinned under some weights at 3am with no one else around. read more

I've been bitten by the fitness bug, and finally decided to start finding the gym for me. Living nearby and currently working odd hours, I figured Anytime Fitness would easily win me over. I went in to sign up for the 7 day pass, and was rather put off by the pushiness. The trainer gave me a brief tour of the facility, which isn't too large but the equipment is very nice. After the tour I asked about the rates, and didn't appreciate the sign up now pitch. There is a 60 dollar joining fee, but he told me if I signed a contract before trying the 7 day pass that they would waive it. This is really bothering me, since it's now clear that they don't need to collect this exuberant fee, but if I try out the gym first they need it??? What are they trying to hide? The other thing that bothered me, was what seemed to be the employee trying to take advantage of me. I told him that I previously tried Ballys and the downtown Y, and he said the only other option was the WAC for about 70 dollars a month. I quickly pointed out that there is a Gold's Gym nearby and a Snap Fitness literally blocks away. He then agreed, but it left me assuming this guy knows nothing about his competition (doubt it), or that he was trying to play me for a fool. My first workout went well and the crowd is mostly college students and young professionals. The equipment is top notch, and they have a cool cycling bike that has video cycling classes on the monitor. The showers aren't like typical gym showers, but are in single occupant bathrooms. I'll be back to try it out again, so hopefully future experiences are better. read more

Sometimes - much like everyone I imagine - my life gets stressful, and I just want to go work out. My idea of the ideal workout doesn't involve being in a room with a bunch of other people and hopping on a giant ball to techno music while some well toned be-spandexed fitness nazi shouts slogans at me. Nor does it involve contracting conjunctivitis from some giant virus stew almost ironically referred to as a "swimming pool". Not that I have anything against swimming or aerobic workouts, its just that dirty pools and silly classes are not, nor will they ever be my cup of tea. I like to go to the gym, maybe get lost in thought on the elliptical machine for a while, then go lift some weights, or circuit train, or some such, then take a nice shower and go do something else. In most gyms in order to do that I have to pay to subsidize the disease pool or the classes, or the person running the wheat grass store, or etc. etc. Oh and I have to make sure I do that during the hours they are open. Anytime Fitness strips the whole gym thing down to the essentials. I like that. There are a bunch of cardio machines, a bunch of circuit training machines, and some free weights. There's also some tanning rooms and whatnot. The location on Farwell on the East Side has all nice new equipment - all the cardio machines have cable enabled TV's (some with media player inputs for the ipod nation) where you can put on some TV, listen on your headphones, and zone out for the length of your workout - very relaxing. The facility is clean, and the monthly rates are reasonable - and oh yeah, as a member you have 24/7 access via an RF Key Fob. For me, it doesn't get much better. read more

I am a huge fan of anytime fitness. I love the 24hour access, the ability to visit any Anytime Fitness, and i love the idea of having my own gym and feeling part of a community. That being said, each facility has its own perks and benefits. My backstory - I travel a good amount during my clinical rotations and i need a stable gym. I worked in Madison for a few weeks and signed up for the location on University Ave and loved it. The staff were very helpful and the gym was nice and clean with labeled weights and stuff. Onto this Eastside location. It is a nice sized gym, bigger than some of the other facilities. It is clean with a nice layout and multiple machines. There are some key differences between this particular location and the others i have been to. Parking. Its downtown, i get it, parking sucks on farwell. There is a structure connected to the gym you can park in but it costs you before 8pm. Otherwise good luck finding street parking. Benches/weights: i have the biggest issue here. The smith machine/squat rack bench press is annoying and limits range of motion due to discomfort and awakwardness. Im used to Marquettes gym where you have a normal bench press. Squat rack benches seem to be the norm amongst all Anytime Fitness locations so no points against this location for that. I also find the use of 0-gravity bars to be annoying but what can you do? The free weights in this particular location are ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. They are for the most part not labeled and actually are unstable. The plates unscrew as if they are ready to fall off when you pick them up! This is a big concern and safety - i dont want to pick up a 100lb weight when i want 80 and i dont want the plates to unscrew and hit me in the face! Granted, you can guess what weight youll use based on their supposed numerical order, but if you look at any other AF location the weights are VERY SECURE and PROPERLY LABELED. I will attach photos. I went to an AF near Lemont, IL which had a smaller gym but properly labeled weights. The same goes for the AF in Shorewood. I urge the owners/managers to follow suit of the other AF locations and update their free weights. Interaction: immediately in the Madison and Shorewood locations i was greeted by the trainers and managers with my first step in the door. In Madison they knew me by name and made me feel welcome. Ive only been to the Shorewood AF once but im sure theyll get to know me more. At this location there was not this interaction. I did take it upon myself to introduce myself. I understand they are busy, but my expectations were set pretty high. With the prior AF. Still, the staff was very friendly once I did meet them. All in all i think its a great gym, just PLEASE fix the free weights! Everything else about the gym is hip and upbeat but the free weights are something out of a teenage boys backyard. When you visit make sure to bring your own talcom powder if you need it, the staff is nice about letting you use it so long as you dont make a mess. Youll have a cubby to store your stuff and its pretty lowkey, havent seen anything suspicious yet. All in all if youre looking for a gym, this place has got what you need. read more

I've been a member at this gym for about a month now. What I want from my workout is: open equipment, clean facilities, and people who leave me alone (or if they must interact, they only do the standard half-smile-head-nod thing). Anytime Fitness on Farwell meets all of those expectations. Busiest time is from 5:00pm - 7:30pm. For this reason I usually go in the morning, or after 8pm. There is wifi here! Go look on the bulletin boards near the bubbler (or 'water fountain' for all your weirdos) and there's a sign with the wifi info. read more

I lived downtown Milwaukee for the year so I was within walking distance to this gym and loved it! (I travel for work quite a bit so I have visited anytime facilities all across the U.S.) The staff was always very friendly. The bathrooms were very clean and I never saw any problems. During the busy workout hours it didn't ever feel super crowded and if there was any wait for the machines - it wasn't long at all. I would recommend joining this gym! :) read more

Overall like this gym. I like the layout and the environment, plus it's super close to my house so I don't have to worry about parking. Usually busiest hours are after standard work times so 4:30-7:30 pm. I try to avoid those hours. Only criticism is that compared to the previous locations I have used, this one has the most run down and least up kept equipment. I have used Anytime gyms in my hometown and on my college campus, and I loved both of them. This gym, on the other hand, is horrible. The owners and managers do not care about their members and will not think twice about issuing their members fines. My girlfriend and I once walked in together and both scanned our keys, and she was fined $50 for letting someone else in behind her. Not only that, but the gym hands outs expired offers to try to trick their members into referring friends, only to turn those offers down when friends come back and try to use them. Not only is the service terrible, but the equipment in this gym is old, dirty, and more often than not broken. If you are going to join Anytime, join in a suburb; it will cost you much less, and the gym will be much nicer. If you need to find a gym downtown, I strongly encourage you to look elsewhere. read more

I have been a member since the beginning of 2012 and I really like this place. I was shocked that someone would call Jen a dog! She has always been really nice to me and accommodating. The price is high, but location is perfect, you can watch all the people outside on the treadmills and machines, and their classes rock. I just tried Zumba and am definitely going back. I also appreciate how clean the club is and that they always fix broken machines within the week. Even if I go there during the most busy times, there are open machines and space for all. Don't sign up for ATF. You'll be obligated by the horrendously long contract and, if you do want to cancel, make sure you give 30 days notice, or else you'll end up paying for an extra 2 months. I wanted to cancel on February 25th, but due to the rigid cancellation requirements, was told that since it was less than 30 days from my next payment, that my last payment would be on March 22nd. I just moved to milwaukee and this was my first gym visit in this city. I picked this location because it is closest to my house. I was pretty disappointed. The first machine i tried to use made a horrible grinding noise. The next THREE machines i tried to use had tvs that didnt work. Normally, i wouldnt care about the tvs since i bring my ipad to watch netflix, but i found that the wifi was also not working. On top of it all, the place was a mess. I am hoping the other Anytime Fitness locations in this area are better. read more

Full disclosure: I used to be a member at the Shorewood Anytime. Despite running against a wall, which I personally hate, I really liked this location. Clean, everything worked, friendly staff and patrons, overall great place. I recently rejoined since the new club on Water St is right near work at the Farwell location right near home. The Farwell location is convenient, but I always find myself having to pay to park in the lot next door. The perks: there is a door connecting the garage to the gym (it's the little things, much appreciated). Do I wish some of the patrons had proper gym etiquette (wiping machines after use, not clanking weight machines super loud, respecting personal space)? Yes, but that's not necessarily their fault. My main recommendation would be to start offering some FREE fitness classes. $40, when compared to the other gyms in the area like Blast and Planet Fitness, should include at least some basic classes. $20 per month on top of that seems a bit much. Also, don't forget a good deep clean of the machines on occasion. Otherwise, keep doin' what you're doin'. Last word: Please offer a month-to-month option! read more

I recently joined anytime fitness, and I love it! The space is clean, and spacious. Machines are up to date, and in good working order. I dealt with Aarika when I was thinking of joining. I am delighted about how she let me tour the facility and informed me of the price, and amenities. My favorite element of joining was that there was no pressure, she didn't make me feel like I had to join that moment. I signed up for a year with first and last month paid. After three months the manager and my personal trainer quit. Got anew trainer who worked me until I hurt myself TWICE. Quit seeing him (Max) and stayed away. Healed myself and followed contract instructions to cancel after a year. Was told I didn't do it correctly which was BS. They charged me for an extra month which I paid to get the hell out of the dirty POS "club"!!! read more
