Roasted cauliflower and truffle waffle fries

Had an elegant cocktail hour with dear friend Jilaine at the Elephant Club. An exclusive cocktail bar open to the public, this is the perfect place to go for a classy venue when you want to impress someone. Go to the 6th floor. Professional bartenders who know all the classics and understand how to deliver impeccable service while letting you and your guest be the spotlight. I had a French 75, a rare cocktail offering. Fresh and crisp with gin, lemon and high end sparkly. My friend's old fashioned required many customizations; regular or Wisconsin muddled? Brandy, bourbon or whiskey? And yes we have luxurdo cherries! Nice appetizer menu. We had shrimp de jongue, baked cauliflower and truffle oil waffle fries. Yum! Clientele included folks in post workout gear to a wedding party in tuxedoes. Great service, downtown prices that didn't break the bank. A hidden gem - live classy places so I'll be back!!!!

Definitely not the Athletic Club in Chicago lol. It was not bad but it was passable. The staff seemed like they really didn't want to be there. The neighborhood didn't have too much going on unless you walked to the river or lake front. The river walk should have been nice to see the Bronze Fonzie but there was construction along that part of the river so we didn't get to see the Fonz!

Talk about a trip down memory lane! I attended a meeting here recently and it took me all the way back to 1988 when I lived in Milwaukee and had monthly meetings at the Milwaukee Athletic Club or MAC as it is known. The club was originally built as a men's club in 1882 and moved to it's present 12 story location in 1917. And as late as 1988, women were not allowed to enter through the front doors, but had to go around to the side entrance. Imagine my surprise when I first showed up and was escorted to the "appropriate" door. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone but then realized this was just one rule of this "men's club" trying to make the transition to accommodate women. The other challenge? There were floors that had no women's restrooms on them. We needed to schedule longer breaks just so the women at the meeting could actually use the facilities. While some of that has changed (I can now walk in the front door, hooray for progress!) there are still separate workout facilities and pools for men and women, the women's area is not manned all the time like the men's and women's restrooms are still not on every floor. This is a private club and to get in, you have to be approved by the Board of Directors that governs the club. But there are a number of social benefits, fitness benefits and business benefits you get from joining. The membership is aging and they are doing their best to stay relevant to the next generation of members. The banquet facilities are some of the best. The food and drink is top end -perfect to impress clients or guests. I've attended more functions than I can count at the MAC and I was always impressed with the high level of personal service and attention, and the food. Need to stay the night? There are 50 or so hotel rooms in the club as well. Or if you are hungry- there are two restaurants and a bar, my favorite being the Elephant Room with the exotic wallcovers and animal print fabric on the chairs. Haven't been to the MAC in 15 years before the other day. But like all things of elegance and style, little changes over time. And the MAC is evidence of that.

    Single queen -- comfy!

Older place and older room furnishings. But it is modestly priced, clean, located just Downtown in a great location and has complimentary wi-fi. Parking is $15 in an adjoining lot. I was there on a short overnight stay and unable to use the amenities which include a restaurant, bar, pool and fitness center. I believe it is a historic building and has a lot of character. The big marbled lobby and the plush vibrant red carpet and dark panelling in the elevators are old school swanky. Some caution though, if you park in the lot, there is no covered direct access to the hotel so maneuvering through the lot and sidewalks can be inconvenient, moreso (and possibly dangerous) in inclement Wisconsin weather. I had a standard single queen which was good sized and clean. Comfy bed if not a little on the worn and soft side. But that's okay by me. The bathroom was also well sized with a nice walk-in shower. Loved that they kept the old-time slot for used razor blades built into the wall next to the sink! Coffee maker, flat screen and usual were all in the room and laid out. Well functioning thermostat and HVAC, too. Very cozy and comfortable to me. Unfortunately, the only negative of my visit is that the reservations manager just was not hospitable. I do not like to be negative, but haughty and condescending is how he came off. He was so on the phone when I made my reservation and in person when I was checking out. (He was not there when I checked-in). Among other reasons, he insulted one of his staff members when I was checking out. I do not think his comment was appropriately made to anyone, let alone a guest. I am no shrinking violet and know when folks are good naturedly kidding. This was not the case. I was surprised that a manager would insult his own staff that way to a guest. To be fair, the rest of the people there were very professional and courteous and, perhaps, the manager was just going through a bad stretch. C'est la vie. But for my impressions of the manager, I would not hesitate to stay there again or to more highly recommend it to others. I think the great location, character of the hotel, and modest cost do warrant a stay though. And I suspect I will give it another go and chalk the above interaction as just an anomaly. So more to follow.

Pros: Nice and helpful staff. It is Walking distance from the riverside theater and historic third ward as well as restaurants on Milwaukee st. Valet parking took our bags to our car after we checked out so we could leave our car parked and go to brunch and the shops in the third ward. Reasonably priced valet parking only at 15.00 for the night. Cons: I didn't sleep a wink b/c the bed was so uncomfortable. The rooms are very dated. Very old carpet and furniture. If you are not picky about comfort, want a good deal & want to explore this part if town this could be the place for you. I will not return b/c there are other hotels in the area for a little bit more that I have found to be much more comfortable and have rested well at. I'm trying to catch up on my sleep as I write this.

Very inconsiderate company to work for. When I was interviewed for a cook position I informed them that I have an autistic daughter and a 1st shift job being a care giver for my grandmother and some days may be challenging. Chef grant was well aware of that and so were my other colleagues. I was wrote up for being tardy so I made it my mission to find a secure babysitter for my young one and never was tardy again. On 9/13 I worked from 9am til 3pm in the rooftop kitchen. I clocked in at 8:58am that day; never expected to be fired the next day. Especially when my performance in the kitchen was outstanding. The next day I was scheduled from 3pm - 10pm. They have a tablet that everyone uses to clock in and after so many uses you have to clear the cookies in order for you to clock in which takes one minute. I clocked in at 3:01 on 9/14. I had to take the residents elevator because the freight elevator was down due to maintenance. Once I finally got to my post I greeted everyone. I was asked by chef Matt what time did I get here today and I told him I got here at 2:58 and it took me a minute to clock in because I had to clear the cookies on the tablet because it didn't let me login without clearing the cookies. After that he told me with a stern look on his face that chef Tom wanted to see me. I get down there to meet chef Tom and he directed me to wait for him in the ballroom. I sat there for 45 minutes and chef Tom finally greets me and sit down with termination papers . He asked me what time did I get here today and I told him 2:58 but I clocked in at 3:01 due to me clearing the cookies on tablet and refreshing the page . He cuts me off in the middle of me telling him about the tablet and says "you were late, so with that being said we're terminating you." I let him know that I wasn't late today it was the system freezing up so I couldn't clock in on time. I was on the premises at 2:58pm. He wasn't trying to hear me and it was very clear that he had his mind made up. I told him about my autistic daughter and the babysitter situation and how that was handled so I wouldn't have problems moving forward and I haven't had any since the write up. So that was very upsetting hearing that bad news especially having a marvelous work day the day prior. Everyone was all smiles, it was crazy how the energy changed so quickly the next day and I wasn't even late. He was speaking in a negative tone. He wasn't understanding at all but he was very understanding with the other chefs that have kids letting them leave to go pick up their kids from school and return back to work. Some wouldn't even clock out and would just leave and come back. For example, Chef Grant left on the day of an event 9/14. What was even more upsetting was seeing I wasn't eligible for rehire! I really enjoyed working there granted being despised

Booked two separate events and the catering staff is amazing. Compare the pricing for a meeting or event and you will come back everytime!

I used a complimentary day pass to workout out the downtown WAC. I had a YMCA membership but have…read morealways been curious about the WAC and how if might differ/be better, etc. My initial impression was, I'm in a gym on a college campus. It was busy when I went (5:30pm on a Monday) which made getting a leg or arm circuit done on the weight machines a bit tricky. Now, if you wanted to use an elliptical or other cardio equipment those machines were mostly open. Some things I absolutely loved about this WAC location: The indoor track inside (9 laps = one mile). In the winter, it's like you're walking in a snow globe. There are huge floor to ceiling windows that offer great city views. The staff! Very warm, helpful, patient and kind. The steam room and sauna in the locker rooms. Keys to lockers are provided as well as towels and there's shaving cream in the locker room showers. Free parking so long as you download the parking app used here and scan the QR code before leaving the gym (parking is free for up to 3 hours). Olympic size/caliber weight room on the second floor (this gym is only two floors and does not have a gym). After my one day workout sesh, will I be back? If I lived downtown on the east side of the city then yes I would hop on the WAC train and member up. But being a 15 minute drive from downtown, and not always in the mood to workout after work I don't think I will be calling this gym "mine" any time soon. Regardless, it was a lot of fun to try this location out and to see the nice amenities the WAC has to offer downtown.

This is the main WAC I go to...I've gone over the years quite a few times here, but over summer I…read morestarted going in the morning and have been really glad its become part of my routine. While one of the smaller WACs, it has lovely views of the city from its location on the 6th floor of the 411 building. Theres an indoor track that runs along the outside of the gym, and a second floor (the 5th) has more weight training areas and another group exercise studio. They do a lot of classes if you're into that sort of thing, and while the equipment isn't super fancy it gets the job done and there isn't usually too long of a weight fot anything. The great thing about the WAC is I consider it a "full service" type of club with free lockers, towels, coffee, very nice showers and other services (for a fee ) like PT and massage. The WAC is more expensive than a planet fitness but you definitely get what you pay for here No pool sadly at this site but there is a steam room (and maybe a sauna?) In the locker room. Nice friendly environment to work out in - 5 stars!
