This is a very nice Planet Fitness in a convenient downtown location by the river. The equipment is all very new and clean and they're open 24/5, being closed at night on the weekends. For $15 a month that's really great, IF you can walk to it or take the bus. It's not crowded if you go early in the morning before work or late at night, but after work on the weekdays can get a little crazy. They could probably use some more free weights, and I would love to see a bench machine or two or even just a good old fashioned bench press. They have those squat machines you can rig to do bench presses but it's a pain to get it situated just right. Just get some dedicated bench machines. Otherwise, everything is very clean, they've got showers, a little spa area for the Black Card members, and the location's pretty cool. This is a pretty nice Planet Fitness. I really like that this location has lockers in the front of the gym where you don't need to bring your own lock. It has self locks, which really makes it very convenient. This location is clean, has good service, fresh flowers in the bathroom and all the equipment I need to work out. Although, I easily get distracted with TJ Maxx being right down the road. Half the time, I'll be ready to work out and then I see that TJ Maxx sign and I have to stop those inner voices telling me to skip my workout and shop. lol. There is quite a bit of parking around this gym, but if you don't find any street parking, Planet Fitness will give you a big discount to park in the garage. This was my gym for about a year. Overall I had a fine experience. I felt like it was worth the low price I was paying. Equipment was satisfactory. Plenty of workout and weight lifting options. There's not easy parking, but I lived close by, so that was no issue. If you go here, use the lockers in the locker rooms. Someone tried to take my things from the front lockers. It was really easy to suspend my membership. I couldn't get into the gym afterward though, even though I was told I could. Is it worth $10-$20 a month? Yes. More than that? Great gym with clean and abundant equipment. 24hrs most of the time. Ten bucks for a monthly membership, and one hundred and fifty bucks a month for parking. Even if you validate your parking, it'd cost you sixty a month to visit the gym everyday for an hour. If they worked out that issue it'd be busier. Thought the price was pretty good and liked the app feature showing how busy it was (rarely). Now I know why. Been at the downtown Milwaukee location a month and their only Hydro-Massage Chair has been broken coming on 2 weeks now... the left mens shower hose has a major leak for a couple weeks now... and to make it all worse... today they didn't have the World Cup soccer match on at 11am with all the TV's they have? To top it all off I got yelled at for "slamming" dumbells (which I didn't). Granted... at the end of a set you can't set them down like a feather but I am curtious to others. The floor is so hard with one thin/hard layer of padding that of course it will make some noise. Maybe invest in some padding and maitaining your facilities?! read more

Was hoping they were going to add more free weights/smith machines during the renovations, but just like every other commercial gym, they doubled the amount of treadmills and got rid of half the free weights. Super disappointed in this "renovation." I do not recommend this place if you're looking to lift weights. read more

This is a pretty no frills gym, there is no pool or sauna. There is a lot of cardio equipment, weight equipment, and even televisions to help keep you entertained while you work out. There is also a schedule of classes, which I haven't participated in but plan to soon. Tanning and water massage are available. You can do it for free if you have a special membership or you can pay by the service. One cool thing is that there are private showers. If you don't like others having the ability to check out your junk while you are showering this is a good thing. If you go to the gym in order to check out other people's junk, you're in for a disappointment. The best thing of all is the low membership pricing of only $10 a month. There are higher memberships which do come with a few perks, but I think most people can handle the basic membership just fine. Plus, I am near certain that they are open 24/7. read more

I have watched multiple people use machines or jus sit there idling on their phone, get up and not wipe it down. maybe i'm just a germaphobe after covid, or some of them just weren't raised right... but i've started wiping machines down before I even use them because I don't trust these fuckers to clean up after themselves and like I said... I have watched people get up from using the machine and not wipe it down while there is a cleaning station right next to them. nothin on the staffs part, or that they could do about it, it's not unclean because of them!! they are ALWAYS cleaning, always THE MOST friendly, always willing to help if you have questions. read more

I love this location - it provides me what I need to exercise and rejuvenate. Here's my breakdown, it will not match all people's needs: Service: Usually okay, I know how to check myself in (just scan your barcode) when they are low staff and away from front desk cleaning or helping someone on the floor. The newer employees (you can always tell) seem nervous to talk and almost like they have a prepared speech. I've had to wait a few times during off-peak hours - funny, less customers less employees - at the front desk for service. I think I've only texted my bf to complain less than 3 times in the 2YR I've been coming here. Membership: I have the blackcard membership. $20/MN + 2x $20 annual fees, direct from my bank account, have never has an error in billing. I have access to (and def make use of) the added amenities. Total Body (Red Light Therapy & Vibroshake 12 min), Tanning (Level 3 lay down or Level 4 stand up - forget max time on each), Hydro-massage bed (10 min), and Massage chair (5 min increments). I also bring my bf in as a guest 2 days/wk almost every week. I am also able to use the card for access to other PF gyms, and have done so! Equipment: They have updated some machines and changed the layout on the floor. Yes all the 4 rows of cardio machines are up front with options to watch TV or watch the riverwalk. The dumbbell area does get crowded, but there are at least 6 benches present. People usually stand behind them and make use of space when the benches are full. There are 3 smith machines + added benches. Three full offerings cable machines, and a bunch of sorted other machines (leg press, chest press, etc.). There is an open concept area for stretching with abs equipment and a cool TRX360 w/plenty of kettle bells (I use this area mostly for my HIIT workouts and never have issues with space). And there is a back area reserved for 30min express workout. I do not see that area fully utilized unfortunately, but have used the equipment back there when the floor is full. Equipment again: I currently follow Kayla Itsines & Kelsey Wells programs (BBG & PWR) and have barely had a problem finding a machine to suit those programs. I work out either hella early (445am-530am) or smack dab in peak-hours (5pm-7pm). I've had to improvise a few times, but not enough to remember past my last waiting experience. read more

DO NOT GO if you want to try to be safe from COVID. They let their members workout with their masks wrapped around their chin and practice no social distancing! This location is larger than the one on the south side which is helpful now that summer is coming and everyone is trying to go to the gym. The only criticisms I have-the stretching area also doubles as an ab area- and it's tiny! There's never enough room for those who want to stretch to actually go and do so because people are doing ab work, but then there's not really a designated area where people can do abs! You see the dilemma? Another thing is the hand dryers in the bathroom that preach the saving of trees yet when we wipe down the machines, we do so with spray and paper towels. So while we dry our hands with air, we kill plenty of trees trying to disinfect the machines...if it's really all about saving trees why don't they invest in the cleaning wipes? They would probably disinfect the machines a little better. Otherwise the gym is kept mostly clean (there have only been some issues with people forgetting how to flush the toilet-but that's not the staff's fault) the staff is friendly, the upgrade to the key fobs is a little more convenient. It serves it's purpose: go, work out, go home. You definitely can't beat the price but be warned there is an annual fee that you pay to be a member. read more

I'm not someone who takes the gym all that serious, but every once in a while I join my roommate using his free guest pass. Honestly, the idea of working out in front of other people is intimidating to me... but Planet Fitness is pretty welcome to people of all body types and experience. Overall I feel this location is clean, friendly, and offers a good variety of equipment, but there are a few downfalls: Parking - Unless you go on a Sunday, you're paying to park on the street if you can even find a spot... OR, you pay for the parking structure. Yes, PF validates but it will still cost you each time. Pushy Marketing - Even calling as a guest to inquire about parking, the first thing they asked is if I had a membership. When I told them I was going to sign up and wanted to know the parking situation, they went into a scripted speech about the locations and benefits. Instructions & Limit: Some of the equipment has much lower weights than other gyms. And if you find equipment you don't know how to use there is rarely someone around to help you. Still, I give Planet Fitness 4/5 stars because they do a lot to maintain the location, the staff are always in a positive mood, and the atmosphere is generally welcoming. read more

As the majority of PF's do they have all the equipment you need to get your workout on. This is the worst gym in Milwaukee. The "no contract" is a total lie. I had a serious medical issue about a year and a half ago. They refused to cancel over the phone and the only other option was to mail in a medical statement from my physician. No way I feel it is a violation of HIPPA laws. I filed a BBB complaint and it took them a year to respond. They insist I owe them for all the dues. Bottom line is the owners only care about money. Staff is terrible, only concern is standing behind the desk playing on their cell phones. Will not enforce any rules like cell phone use, could care less if people monopolize the equipment cause they are wrapped up texting. I have seen homeless people sleeping in the locker rooms, have had my locker broken into. My advice join ANY other gym. read more

It's a smaller location, I try to go either really early in the morning, or 10pm and later. Less meat heads hitting on you, ladies. Just like any other gym. The one thing I wish PF had was a pool. Pros: -Can have a month-to-month or yearly membership at $10/month for fitness equipment only. -Can have a yearly membership at $20/month for fitness equipment + unlimited tanning + hydromassage bed and massage chair access + red light therapy + access to other Planet Fitness locations. -Have never had to wait for a machine in the five months I've been going here. -LOTS of cardio machines (mostly treadmills and ellipticals but some others as well) -Free weights and weight machines also abundant throughout the place. -Nicely maintained locker rooms. -Brand new as of late December 2011 = facility and machines in great condition. -Staffed and open 24/7. -Reduced rate parking for the garage across the street. -Great mix of people who are already really in shape and people who are just trying to get into shape -- i.e., no pressure for gym newbs. Cons: -Nothing fancy -- no pools, saunas, hot tubs, running track, etc. But that's part of their whole shtick. So if you're looking for that, Planet Fitness isn't going to be your thing. We all have to start somewhere with a gym membership, right? Of course one day I'd like to join an elite racquet (yes, pinky up) club with indoor courts, sauna, hot tub, pool, and a comprehensive workout facility. But today isn't the day, and it's likely that this is not the year. And this is where Planet Fitness comes in... Location: 4 out of 5 From my digs in the 3rd ward, it's a .8 mile walk/jog to the lovely location right at the corner of Wisconsin and the riverwalk. It's a perfect distance to either warm up for my workout by jogging over, or for just mindless walking through the various streets. While I didn't see any obvious parking spots right in front of the building, there are metered spots close by which are open later in the day (i.e., non work hours), and they do offer a discounted parking program. Price: 3.5 out of 5 While this isn't my year to join Western Racquet Club, I did take the big fish in a small pond approach to join PF. They were running a promotion that's been extended to August 14 where you can get the black card membership for 20 bucks a month with a 20 dollar startup fee, and a yearly membership of 39$. The "contract" length is 12 months but you can buy it out early for 58 if you need to. When you take into account the sunk costs of the 20$ startup fee and the 39$ annual membership fee, the total comes to 25$ a month for the first year. Considering the sheer number and variety of machines/equipment, it's really not a bad deal, and includes perks like tanning (probably wont' use this much, if at all), unlimited guest passes, reciprocal privileges nationwide, the hydromassage tables, massage chairs, and half off the cooler drinks. Selection of workout equipment: 5 out of 5 This is limited to the machines/stations/equipment, and not to the amenities. The number of cardio machines (t-mills, ellipticals, bikes, stair machine'esque contraptions) is quite immense. The first night I went, I went at 8pm and I almost had an entire row of treadmills to myself. And I mean a whole row which consisted of maybe 30 treadmills. There's a wide array of free weights and weight machines, and as others have mentioned, the two isolated areas: one for 12 minute abs, and the other for an express 30 workout (which has machines that the other parts of the building have, but just in a single circuit fashion). I mean, if you're the type of person who likes to use free weights or machines (thereby isolating muscle groups for your chosen reason), you'll feel right at home. If you're of the school of thought where you use your body weight as natural resistance and rely on body towers with weight assistance (pullups, dips, etc.), you'll also feel at home. Different strokes for different folks when it comes to gertting in shape, right? Cleanliness: 4 out of 5 The people who work here do a nice job of trying to keep the place clean, and for the most part - the people working out are good about wiping down their machines. As with any public space though - you have your handful of people who just don't care, and it's not limited to what someone below me has labeled as being "ghetto." There are people of every color, race, culture, and socioeconomic status who may not know or think to wipe off equipment. Customer Service: 3.5 out of 5 The three people working at the front desk were nice enough. They rotated between checking people in, cleaning equipment, and managing the reservations for tanning/massage. I had signed up online and the guy that gave me my stuff (key tag, t-shirt) was nice and quick enough. I did NOT get the grand tour of the facility though, but this is not something that I really wanted or needed. After all, they already had my business, and I am lucky enough to have legs and eyes that work. These guys and gals work pretty hard too because throughout the evening I saw them vacuuming, replacing the paper towels/disinfectant, and just walking around to make sure everything was ok. Amenities: 2 out of 5 This should come as no surprise to anyone, but at a less prohibitive price point, you can't depend on the things that you might have at a nicer facility. Notably, this facility does not include: pool/sauna/hot tub; towels for members to use; childcare; pro shop; snack shop/smoothie bar; areas dedicated only for classes (though there are some classes now that you can sign up for). But, there are lockers for day use (bring your own lock) and the showers and bathroom are clean. SERIOUSLY. If you plan on moving any time soon, do NOT get a Planet Fitness membership. This has been an absolute nightmare. I got my gym membership in February when I had not intention of moving. Come May, I find out my job will be termed as of 2016 and my husband and I use this as an opportunity to move to a new city. The absolute last thing I was concerned about was a gym membership. Because Planet Fitness is owned individually at each location, I can't just cancel my membership at my local Madison office, that would just make life too easy, instead I can send certified mail or come in person, neither of which are exactly convenient. Then, I'm trying to update my financial information with them since I closed my bank account in Milwaukee. I have two options, do it online or in person. Great! Online! Awesome! Except, I previously used another gym before Planet Fitness and set up an account with them. Now every time I log into myiclubonline, it brings up my old gym and not Planet Fitness. I called the Downtown location, explained my situation, and got the same options. Do it online, or come in person. What kind of business won't let me change my billing credit card over the phone? What, am I trying to commit reverse fraud? I'm trying to give you money and you won't take it?? So ungodly frustrating, not worth the cheap rate. read more

I had been looking for a gym to join and decided on Planet Fitness after several of my coworkers told me how much they love it and you really can't beat their price of $10/month. I joined through their website and then picked up my card (and free tshirt!) from the front desk. Not the most glamorous gym, but it's perfect for what I was looking for. They seriously have a TON of cardio machines. I can't ever imagine anyone having to wait for one. I'm not much of a weight training girl, but they have a pretty good section of weight machines as well. I do wish they had a little more room by the free weight section and maybe some extra mats and some exercise balls. The locker rooms are very nice and clean. The showers are great- dual showers heads, just in case you don't want to get your hair wet. All in all for the price, it's a great gym. read more

I don't ask a lot from a gym. Planet Fitness gives me everything I ask for. No, there aren't really any amenities. I'm not even a "Black Card" member, so I can't tell you about the tanning or hydro-massage. But I can tell you that there's a wide selection of machines, and I've never had to wait for one, even going at peak times. Everything is very clean, and the women's locker room is nice (it has fresh flowers!). Your fellow gym members are, as a whole, conscientious - I've yet to see someone skip out without wiping down their machine - and I've only heard the "lunk alarm" go off once or twice. The walls proclaim it to be a "No Judgement Zone," and so far that's true. For the most part, I feel like I'm left alone during my work out, which is just fine by me. The staff is friendly enough and always says goodbye when you're leaving. Honestly, all I really want is to use a few cardio machines and a few weight machines a few times a week. I don't need classes or a trainer or a sauna to be happy. I wish that the lockers weren't 1-day-use, though I understand with the number of members they have there's no way they'd have the space to offer permanent lockers to everyone. This gym is connected to my office, so I already have parking nearby, but it could definitely be challenging to find somewhere to park down there. read more

I just started at Planet Fitness. The Price ($10/month) and No Contract! were what attracted me. Come summer I can stop my monthly payment and rejoin next winter - Awesome! It is convenient to my work. They have a lot of machines. So far in the early mornings, I've had no issue with waiting for a machine. Everything appears clean and well-maintained including the locker room. They also have a 12-minute Ab rotation area and 30-minute machine rotation area which I'm going to scope out more closely tomorrow. A free Fitness Trainer can be scheduled at any time. Do not give them your credit card info!! They will never ever stop billing you and when you call and ask them to, they will try to charge you a cancellation fee. Not even kidding. Worst customer service ever! I never actually joined Planet Fitness. They somehow got my personal info from another club and kept billing my credit card every month. When I called to tell them to stop it and refund me, they would have no discussion of it. The woman told me she could cancel it if I paid a cancellation fee. I asked if she was smoking crack, since she didn't seem to understand the issue here. I never authorized them to charge me. I never joined here. I never stepped foot in the door. She finally passed me over to the manager Joseph who reiterated that they would never refund and that I should take it up with the previous gym. (which of course went out of business) Even though they were the ones that had been stealing my money each month, he said I should ask the previous gym to refund me. REALLY??!! I could barely speak I was so angry. I would have expected them to consider doing something for me to appease the BS situation. They would not entertain a thing. There must be a big bonus for the manager if they have zero refunds? I may start a class action lawsuit for all of us that went through this same ordeal with these creeps. He mentioned to me that I was definitely not the first one. Check the BBB if you wanna see some really interesting complaints against these guys. they never refund anything ever!! "Bodies like these don't grow on trees." Planet Fitness is a great option for those looking for a cheap (but up-to-date) facility to work out and get back in shape. I've been running/lifting here since July 2012 and my experience has been consistent in that the staff is friendly and makes sure that all equipment is in working condition. My experience has also been positive with cleanliness. Staff frequently fills sanitizer bottles around the gym so that members can wipe down the equipment after use. The locker rooms are also frequently clean so that no one is getting any of those gross infections. Oh, and the showers! The showers are wonderful - an overhead rain shower effect with another shower head that comes out of the wall to spray your torso. Best public shower experience ever! With the motto "No Judgement," PF makes sure that the facility is welcome to people of all levels of fitness. The gym has a 'Lunk Alarm' that is set off when someone slams weights or is 'bro-ing' it out - it's suppose to be be a way to make not-so-serious exercisers feel welcome. Though, depending on who's working the front desk, it may not always be set off. I personally still caution around slamming my 15 pound weights. I'd rather not have an alarm sound and have everyone look at me. They recently started providing a limited amount of classes. So I've been looking for a cheap gym option for awhile, going from one Groupon sale to another (Boot Camp anyone?) waiting to find a good deal to sign up for. I've found it! Brought to my attention by my bargain-shopping boyfriend, we discovered this new facility (open since 12/31/11) has great promotional prices with two options to choose from. We both went with the basic plan that allows 24 hour access to the facilities for $1 sign up fee, $10 / month, yearly fee charged in the fall of $29. There is a slightly more expensive option ($1 sign up fee, $20 / month, yearly fee of $39) that comes with some perks - being able to use the membership at other Planet Fitness locations, the ability to bring a guest whenever, tanning, red light therapy (have you heard of this? I don't believe the claims that it makes your skin healthier), and access to massage chairs/beds. If only my boyfriend and I could coordinate our schedules, then I would have gotten this one. But I'm a morning person and he's a night person, sigh. The facilities - I find the purple and yellow of Planet Fitness energizing, which is good, because it is EVERYWHERE. All the machines have been decorated to match PF, which can be a little overwhelming. There are plenty of the standard cardio machines - treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and arc trainers. They are packed close together but the space is big & open so it doesn't make me feel claustrophobic. The machines all have iPod hookups so you can charge and listen to you iPod simultaneously. Unfortunately, the machines don't have individual tv's, but there are many on the walls to tune into if you prefer that to your iPod. Also, there is an abundance of weight machines and free weights. I prefer weight machines to free weights, so I can't really talk about the free weight situation. I can tell you that it had all my fave weight machines, and 2 of each to keep wait time low. (Not that it was a problem, the gym has never been crowded when I've gone.) The interesting thing about Planet Fitness is they have these 2 circuits set up to help you with your workout. Both consist of numbered stations and a red light, green light system that tells you when to workout and when to take a well-deserved break. One circuit is a 12 minute abs workout and the other is a 30 minute circuit. I have yet to try them (need to meet with the trainer to get the skinny) but these appeal to me. The locker rooms are nice, with a television, flowers, and hair dryers for the ladies. (Not sure about the men.) You need to bring your own lock and you can't keep stuff overnight - pretty standard fare for a gym. Things missing from the gym that explain the great price - 1. Parking. The gym is downtown and has no parking. It has a deal with the Grand Ave Parking structure next door so you only pay $1.00 per hour for up to 3 hours, but that eats away at the savings you get from such a cheap membership. Of course, meter parking is only from 8 am to 6 pm, so if you just work out outside normal business hours, you should be OK. 2. Fitness classes. I really love trying things like Zumba, pilates, and spinning, so I'm saddened that there are no group classes to keep me motivated. 3. Would be nice to have a sauna or jacuzzi to relax after a workout. I guess that's what the massage chairs are for, but you have to have the "Black Card" membership for these benefits. 4. I already mentioned it, but I'd like individual tv's on the cardio equipment. In the end, it was too good of a deal to pass on - 1. 24 hour access 2. Plenty of new equipment 3. Waste of you're money and time, it's 10 dollars a month, but remember you're 40 annual fee. They don't let you cancel your member ship over the phone, so if you have moved. Good luck getting rid of your payments. Honestly work out outside, use your own home, or just getting a better membership somewhere else. Many other places offer a much better experience for a few dollars more. Edit: I tried calling in to cancel my membership before the yearly charge, they told me I cannot over the phone and have to come in or send a written letter (what year are we in again? 1896???) and I haven't had time to get to that location and by the time a written letter would arrive i would pay 40 annual fee. I enjoy going to Planet Fitness. I am in the process trying to rebuild my muscles especially in my legs. Trying to work out and relax in the chair massage or hydro massage is very helpful. Very nice welcoming staff. read more

I went in to cancel before the annual fee. I was still charged the annual fee. This is during a pandemic when no one should be using public gyms and when people don't have a lot of money to spend. It took my almost 20 minutes just to find parking to do this! read more

My membership from another gym was transferred here when that gym closed. I ended up paying a years worth of dues for a gym I didn't use due to an employee telling me that was the most affordable option rather than pay cancellation fees. At the end of the year my only year contract was automatically renewed without notice and I was forced to pay even more fees and also told I could've cancelled at anytime throughout the year. Extremely uninformed employees who will apparently scam and deceive people into paying more than they need to. There's a reason this place is so cheap as they will find ways to charge you elsewhere. read more

I'm going to cut the narrative short and just get down to business: I went the other day with a friend (who loves the place) to see if I would like it enough to switch gyms. Here's the deets: Pros: the guest policy is nice, and the sound output on the treadmills is very good. I also like that they had a sheet informing members of peak use times. I saw a few staff members walking around with rags, which led me to believe they were monitoring or cleaning machines. That's a very good sign. Cons: Many machines and two men's bathrooms out of order. Lunks. All over the place. The anti-lunk buzzer in the free weight area rang constantly. The place seems poorly monitored. I saw several people bypass the front desk and just mosey in. The Situation: My friend and I got treadmills side-by-side. She finished first and went to go stretch or something else, who knows. The important point is that she left her wallet in the drink cup (neither of us thought to bring locks, and at least had the good sense to keep our valuables close at hand...for the most part). I stayed on the treadmill for 10 more minutes, hopped off, found my friend (who remembered she'd left her wallet in the cup holder), returned to our treadmills and found that her wallet was gone. I mean, someone must have been casing us or just got lucky, because we were only away for 1 1/2-2 minutes. So before you crab about "too bad, so sad--she left her wallet" and other versions of victim blaming, let me concede that this was clearly her mistake. She left her wallet unattended in a crowded, downtown, poorly secured gym for 1-2 minutes before realizing her mistake. What wasn't her fault, however, was the rank ambivalence with which she was treated by the staff afterward. They were like *blank stares*. We pressed them for more help--a manager's name, check the security tape, help us look under the treadmills just in case. Hell--help us get out of the parking garage because her parking ticket was in her wallet. Meh. "Okay." The guy called the parking people (after we pressed him), but she was charged a feel anyway and has to return to pay it. This is not PF's jurisdiction, but I was honestly surprised they didn't give us a validation thing or...care more? I suppose I was looking for some sort of acknowledgement or help with the fact that their inadequate security likely caused my friend a breech in her's. Whatever. We asked for the manager to call in the morning. Still no word. Her wallet is long gone, and again, that she left it was her fault, but after this experience I am sure to stay away from Planet Fitness downtown. read more

Planet Fitness is definitely and entry-level gym. It caters to many different groups of people. PF does a great job of getting people in the door. The cardio equipment is plentiful and it is typically easy to find a treadmill or elliptical. The weight machines are adequate. The cable machines get a bit crowded from time to time but people are usually cool and let you work in. You get what you pay for really shows up in the free weights area. This location does not have any squat or bench press racks, only Smith machines. No barbell dead lifts, no barbell rows (without the Smith machine), no barbell skull crushers, etc. The stretching area is tiny and doesn't allow for much more than stretching and mild abs work for 5-6 people. A lot of square footage is taken up by the seldom-used proprietary workout areas. The locker rooms are adequate and showers are better than expected for $10/month. Planet Fitness really falls short in they attentiveness of staff to issues in the gym. Equipment is not repaired in a timely fashion. Lockers are rarely wiped out of hair and other grossness. Sinks, showers, urinals and toilets are frequently dirty or appear dirty. Air fresheners seem inadequate to keep up with the general smells present in the locker room. I was excited about PF when I joined. The lack of essential equipment wasn't a big deal at $10/month. I figured I could improvise my workout and adjust to the equipment available. Unfortunately, the disrepair of equipment has frustrated my workout. Worse than equipment, however, is the general filthiness of the club. It doesn't take $95/month dues to get clean lockers and some air freshener in the locker room. Its unfortunate, PF seems to have a pretty good business model. I just joined this gym a month ago. I like how clean and modern it is. I went to Blast witha friend on Van Buren the other day and Planet Fitness is definitely better taken care of. There are a ton of cardio machines and some awesome stretching machines back by the "ab" section. The customers and employees are all friendly. Nobody tries to show off there or is trying to pick people up which is cool. I don't use the tanning stuff but the Red Light machine is cool; seeing results might take a while though. Overall it's a great gym just sad that there are no classes or a steam room. read more

I have been using this Planet Fitness for about a year now. After looking in depth at all the gyms in the downtown area, I'm confident that there's no better value for a gym in Milwaukee (as long as you don't need regular classes or a pool). For an annual fee of $40/year and a monthly fee of $10/month, you get access to a facility which is downtown, open 24/7, and offers parking validation (with limited street parking in the area). The Planet Fitness offerings are pretty good. Tons of treadmills/ellipticals/other cardio equipment, dumbells/barbells with benches, weight machines, Smith machines, and an ab workout area for their specific ab routine (it's silly, more on this below). There are also hydromassage rooms and a few other more esoteric offerings that you can use for an additional fee, but I've never used them. The biggest issue with this place are that there are no free weight racks. Instead, you have to use a Smith machine for squats/bench press. This is not nearly as effective, as the Smith machine guides you up and down, doing part of the work for you. I understand that this is safer, and perhaps it's a liability issue, but still, this makes it hard to recommend this gym to any other people who are serious lifters without price constraints. I would switch to a place with free weight racks, if not for the low PF price and their 24/7 hours. Other issues include no pool (but for the price you pay, you don't expect a pool here), a sparse class offering (again, not expected for the price), the benches near the dumbbell area can get full, and the stretching/abs area is hilariously tiny. This area regularly is so packed it looks like a clown car. This is especially silly considering there is a huge area for PF's "12-minute ab circuit" (or whatever it's called), that is almost never used, and is reserved only for people doing this specific workout routine. People often end up stretching by the machines, since there's no where else to do it. All in all, I would recommend this PF when you consider the low price. It needs a larger stretch area, and some real squat racks to do actual squats/bench presses on. However, it's open 24/7 for the lowest price I could find in the city. If you're in the market for a cheap gym that's open 24/7, this would be a solid choice. read more
