July, 2026, for dinner, I ordered the 'campfire chicken', which on the menu appeared to be roasted chicken, which came with carrots, tomatoes and corn on the cob. The portion size was good - a half chicken. However, the dish was less roasted than stewed in an aluminum foil wrapping. Veggies were overdone (a standard Cracker Barrel treatment), and the corn was virtually inedible; seemed like it was #2 industrial corn that had been in a farmer's silo since 2022. The waitstaff are unfailingly polite, cheerful, and helpful. read more

I stopped into Cracker Barrel for an early Saturday dinner after a day trip to Altoona. It was pretty quiet when I walked in and was seated quickly by the host. Raina was my server, and while she was nice, she didn't follow up much once I got my order. I ordered the fried catfish dinner with fried okra, and turnip greens, which is my longtime favorite dinner. I settled for a biscuit, and corn muffin, to round out my order. The catfish was good like always, not greasy and a nice two-piece portion. I had to chase the fried okra around on the plate when other locations serve the fried okra in a bowl. Aside from a few burnt pieces, the okra was good. The turnip greens were bland. I know everything comes pre-packaged and is heated up but this trip to Cracker Barrel didn't hit the spot. The corn muffin and biscuit were cold, not even warmed up in the microwave. Cracker Barrel is usually a nice stop, but this one was definitely a meh. read more

We stayed next door in the hotel so CB was convenient. We were within an hour of closing and most staff were working on closing chores. It took a few minutes to get noticed for seating but once our server arrived at the table, she was very attentive. The food was hot and filling. The time from ordering to food on the table was quick. But everything was planned for a "get in and get out" operation. The host showing us to our table, first of all, was cranky and NOT rendering service with a smile. The waitress was much better but the food was brought out with no choices available. I was envisioning a nice platter of mashed potatoes, corn, and plenty of tender hot turkey. Instead, it was lumpy sweet potatoes, greenbeans, a ball of stuffing and soggy turkey that was mostly fat. I guess on a crowded holiday, expecting a warm, home cooked style meal us too much. This was put together for the "get them in, get their money, get them out" convenience of the resturaunt, not the satisfaction and enjoyment of the customers. read more

We came to Cracker Barrel for my husband's birthday because he enjoys the cozy, old-store ambience, but the experience was disappointing. The place felt dusty, overused, and a bit unclean, which took away from that nostalgic charm. Even my husband noticed that the table and floor were not all that clean, and I asked if he wanted to go somewhere else for his birthday, but he said, 'Let's just stick it out.' The biggest issue was with the hostess, Jo. She seemed irritated, was visibly sniffing with a cold, and even wiped her nose on her sleeve, which felt unsanitary. When we asked to be seated in a place away from high-traffic areas, she responded with a head bob and a condescending tone, 'Oh, well, we'll just have to see.' She then took us to a tiny two-seater table against a dust-covered latticework divider wall, rolled her eyes, and sarcastically asked, 'Will this do?' making us feel completely unwelcome. We also noticed her interactions with other customers; at one point, she even slammed a menu down on a table where she wanted to seat someone. Curious, I asked one of the gift shop girls about this grumpy old hostess's name, and she confided that it was Jo. It appears that Jo has a nasty reputation with the rest of staff. Perhaps placing Jo in a hospitality role is not the best fit for her strengths. I mentioned Jo's attitude to our server, Aaron, who politely shook his head indicating that she can be difficult to work with at times. Don't blame him. Aaron, a two-star server, was fantastic and deserves a promotion to a four-star server for putting up with such an unpleasant coworker. If the star system applies to hostesses as well, maybe management should consider a reassignment or a demotion of a star for Jo and place her out of contact with diners where she doesn't take away from what is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. The food was fine, with that home-cooked vibe, and my spouse loved the healthy option of Rainbow Trout and baked Sweet Potato, however, the overall experience was overshadowed by the cleanliness concerns and the hostess's attitude. We'll likely choose a different place for our next dinner out and NOT recommend Cracker Barrel as a charming place for others to dine in Altoona. read more

Honestly I don't often think go to Cracker Barrel for a meal. It's not that there is anything wrong with it, but then again there is really nothing that great about it either. Last week I ordered their Southern Fried Chicken with fries, corn, and corn bread. It was ok. The chicken lacked much seasoning and while it wasn't dry, it wasn't very juicy either. The fries were good, but the corn was bland, as was the corn bread. Overall it wasn't very impressive but it wasn't bad. I guess I just expected more from an old time country themed restaurant when it comes to classic country fried chicken. The service was good, but there was such a slow moving line at the cash register on the way out that it took almost 15 minutes to be able to pay the bill. I guess that's why I don't think of going to Cracker Barrel often. Would I go again? Yes, but probably only once in a while. Maybe things will be better next time. read more

Wow, has this place gone downhill. I guess the rumors are true. I used to be able to rely on a decent corporate standard for food here, nothing special but reliable comfort food. I guess the recent financial problems the chain has experienced are dragging the place down, though. I didn't have to wait long to get seated, and my waiter was quick with my drink, but I ordered a new menu item and I had to wait over 20 minutes for an overcooked mess. And the manager seriously wanted to argue with me about it! I asked to just go, since my meal arrived ruined, and she insisted I pay for the Coke I ordered with the meal. No offense, but the one star is the minimum, and I don't blame my poor waiter (my tip was as much as the 3 50 for a few sips of my Coke waiting for food). It was terrible, my husband never had a meal..each time he would request an item they were out of something, my grandchildren meals came , my daughter 's came And my husband gave up and said just 2 loaded potatoes, Guess what no potatoes , well sir one , oops nope no potatoes... CB is often a favorite. Should have known when it wasn't busy that it wasn't going to be a good meal. 1. the server was terrible - laughing about everything that was wrong and truly not knowing anything about the menu or anything else. 2. Cracker Barrel is usually so busy we kind of stopped going there. Fortunately, when we stopped for dinner tonight there was no wait. I ordered the Monday special - two pork chops with mashed potatoes and corn. My husband ordered grilled catfish with veggies and our son wanted chicken strips. The food was fantastic! She had brought out a wonderfully warm plate of biscuits and corn bread. The chops had hardly any bones in them, so it was a really hearty plate of food! My husband said his fish was very good and he really loved their tartar sauce. Our son had a fun time playing the golf tee game on the table. I meant to pick one up in the store and I totally forgot. I did find a couple of snacks as did our boy. Watch the signs! The candy I grabbed was supposed to be 2/$3 and the discount wasn't applied. I stopped by Cracker Barrel recently while driving back to NY from Pittsburgh. I was with a friend and we both were down to try Cracker Barrel because we had never gone before. I ordered the dinner order of meatloaf. I think it was like $10. Wow, it came with a lot of food, including 3 sides. I got the sweet potato, steamed vegetables, and mac and cheese. Sweet potato was awesome; it was cooked well and came with a side of brown sugar. Mad good. The vegetables were pretty bad; tasteless and bland. The mac and cheese was good! Nice and creamy and cooked well. I gotta say, the biscuits and cornbread were good too. Especially the biscuit; it was fantastically buttery and flavorful. They gave me a pretty huge slice of meatloaf, so I was pretty excited. Alas, it was a bit disappointing. It was kind of cold and wasn't very flavorful. I guess meatloaf is typically served with ketchup? Because there was ketchup on it. I wasn't a fan of the ketchup. It wasn't horrible by any means, as I still finished it all. But it wasn't at the level I wanted it to be to give a 4 star rating. Otherwise, the store was pretty cool. My friend bought some cheap candy there. I find Cracker Barrel an interesting place. It's hard to figure out if it's a store with a restaurant or a restaurant with a store. I suppose it all depends on what exactly you came here for. I know you can spend more than several minutes browsing the store part of this place, especially since the merchandise can range from the practical to the nostalgic. I appreciate a place that can accommodate a large party. Each time that I have been here with a large party they have no problem with seating us. On this visit that's about the only thing that seem to go right. Well that and our server, Marge, she was amazing. The food was not as stellar as I would have liked it. The fries were so dry that no matter what you dipped them in there was nothing that was redeeming to them. It was like they were made prior to every thing else on my plate and left under a heat lamp until I was served my full plate. Everyone else seemed to think the mac n cheese wasn't up to par, however I enjoyed that part of my meal. Afterwards when we went to pay there was a glitch in the system.
