Tables do not have very much room between them. If it was a nice day you could sit outside and probably be way more comfortable. The food was good. Not great but good; filling. My partner and I stumbled across Apéro on a walk through Georgetown, and we are so glad we did! A quaint little French bistro, this is the perfect spot for a boozy brunch or a drink and snack! They also have a dinner service I am interested in trying, but we came during brunch. We went at about 2PM on a Saturday and were seated right away, but the space is small so I would definitely recommend making a reservation. We tried the D'Anjou Pear and Radicchio Salad, and the Steamed PEI Mussels. Both were excellent! The salad was well dressed, and I loved the combination of the perfectly ripe pear and sweet granola with the bitter radicchio and salty blue cheese. A perfect sweet and savory combination in my opinion! The mussels were to die for. The white wine sauce was so rich and flavorful, and the thick cut bacon added a crispy texture and salty flavor. I also really appreciated that the dish came with croutons to mop up all the delicious sauce with! My only complaint is that a few of our mussels were closed: at a restaurant, I feel that you shouldn't serve closed mussels. The interior is very old fashioned, which I feel suits it well. The French music playing in the background and outdoor patio seating in the back also add to its charm. It's definitely extremely well staffed with a lot of passionate wine experts working here (several Somm's). I was unaware they offered Caviar Hour, which is Caviar happy hour from 3-5 PM. One lady came in after 5 and the bartender said it ended at 6 PM even though the menu says 5. Perhaps they were just being nice to her since she arrived just a little late. Anyway, I ordered the Happy Hour which consisted of 10 grams of a certain Caviar and two glasses of Champagne. There is also an option for a glass of a more expensive one. It was a cool experience for $44. There are more expensive Caviar Hour options as well. The Caviar comes with Potato Chips and other side items you can add to the Caviar and Chips. I've had caviar here and there, but the fiancé has done the whole setup and was craving it. (Who are we?) Lo and behold-a search for "caviar" returned Apéro, a cozy spot tucked in the neighborhoods of Georgetown that boasts an eclectic menu and an affordable full caviar service. There were reservations available on a Friday night, but also some walk ins. It did not disappoint. We had two caviars, and it came with a literal box of waffles cut into sticks for easy loading of fixings (you can also sub the standard chips, but the waffles were cool and different), and a 2-tiered presentation with caviar on ice on top, and very finely chopped red onion, eggs (separate whites and yolk), chives, capers, and sour cream on the bottom. Yum! Such a cool way to experience caviar. The owner is a sommelier, so clearly I needed to get some wine (also a mixologist, and the fiancé had like 3 of their penicillin spin-offs.. he loved it). Server's recommendation was on point after I told him what I typically like. The Mushroom cigarettes with parmesean foam made me feel fancy because how do you make cheese into foam?!? It was delicious- reminded me of a spring roll exterior crossed with a takito execution (open ends, more minimalist pastry) but with savory mushrooms instead. The foam gave the mushrooms that extra saltiness without adding heaviness that cheese sometimes does. Confit canard (duck confit) actually wasn't a favorite of mine. But I think duck in general is always too dry. The flavor was really good, the beans were cooked well and the potatoes were crispy but juicy at the same time. The duck fell off the bone, but I was scraping at the sauce for some moisture. The inside was super cozy and tables around us were getting pretty loud, but it was fine. It really lived up to the casual vibe, and it made you have to think again like 'oh snap, but I'm getting caviar service.' I like that I don't have to go to a white table cloth establishment to get good wine and caviar. The decor was cute- champagne tops and wine corks embedded in the table tops, we sat in velvety high top seats. Wine and champagne wooden box covers served as the clipboard for the menus... and I loved the L'Occitane lotion, wine spill remover, mints, and luscious hand towels in the bathroom. I popped in for a coffee only so I'll need to come back for drinks for a full review, but here's what stands out: 1) Design: It's stunning. With large mirrors and fancy tables, this spot is classy, making for a great date night. 2) Space: There's a back bar, front room with tables and outdoor patios out back and in the front. Outlets for throughout during the day making it a great place to work. 3) Coffee: They have a full coffee menu and brew Grace Street Coffee from up the road. It just took a friend who told me we had to check out a newly opened cocktail bar on P St. The place was bustling as the city reopens from COVID. The bar and indoor dining spaces were filled with happy diners while the staff cleaned off the table booths outside the front of the establishment. The patio was closed at the time I visited but I look forward to checking it out soon. A small staff runs the joint, we were served by founder Elli Benchimol herself that night. The cocktails were fantastic, paired with a solid charcuterie board. Of course, we had to dig into some caviar which was uniquely served with waffles. Elli explained how she thought the natural texture of waffles made them a better tool for holding onto caviar and all your accouterments. She was right! After months of hearing about Apéro from so many of my friends, I finally came. The caviar, the Champagne (Krug by the glass!), and the playful plates -- everyone said it was meant for me -- I was ready. Alas, I was disappointed from the start: in this era of online menus that actually usually match the real menu, the real menu here lacked the Krug by the glass that the online menu features -- the thing that drew me in on my one free night in DC this week. I asked the server about it: "No," he said, "We don't have that by the glass anymore." "Okay," I replied. I asked what year the La Grande Dame was (it's the '12, even though the online menu lists the more robust '08 as being available by the bottle). I ordered a glass to accompany the caviar. The prices for both glasses and bottles are very reasonable. And the caviar was good: the French and the Uruguayan were delightful, firm, good-textured... the accompaniments were proper. The waffles are clever and functional, and my dining companion appreciated them. I'm more of a potato chip guy, and I was glad to have those as well. It was a nice course. The mushroom cigarettes lived up to the hype, the truffle gougères were fine, and the bourgignon was above average, complemented well by a bottle of pinot noir. Service was okay, but not quite what I expected (I didn't get the sense that the server knew much about the Champagnes I was asking about, and he deferred to me on pronouncing the red we ordered, which was haha cute but not what I expect from a $550-for-2-on-a-random-Tuesday meal; why bother with the accent aigu in your name). End of the day, I cannot imagine having a guest ask me for a Champagne and saying to them, "no, I don't have that by the glass" when I literally have it on hand and have somehow decided only to sell it by the bottle while still having it on my online by-the-glass menu. What concept of service is this? Utterly bizarre. The last time I had Krug by the glass was at the now-shuttered Mirabelle, my haunt of yesteryear. I loved that place. I came here hoping for a new love, and I was denied. Why not crack the bottle? I would have been so overcome with glee that I likely would have had a second glass. Maybe a third. Brunch visit: The quality of the food is good. Presentation is okay. Portions are on the small side for the price ($22 for an egg-topped ham and cheese sandwich is a bit over the top price-wise - and there's an option to add caviar on top for another $22). Entrees don't come with a side (in fact there's not even a side menu). Overall, the food menu is very limited but the drinks (alcohol) menu is rather large. The service generally was on the stuffy side. I would rather see the service be a bit more open, and the staff needs to ask customers if they're done with their plates before taking them away so as not to feel pressured (it was attempted three times during my one visit). Based on my one visit, I probably would return only for the coffee unless if I see something being offered that's better priced and portioned. I do like the offside location. Hidden away at a corner in Georgetown is this really cute and romantic restaurant that specializes in wine and caviar. My boyfriend and I decided to check out the place for dinner as per his supervisor's recommendation before we went to catch a movie at the AMC not too far away. The restaurant is dimly lit and pretty small. The decor is cute with gorgeous carpets and wine-cork tables. When we were got there they played the Cure for a bit which put my boyfriend in such a happy mood since that is one of his favorite bands of all time. Our waiter was lovely and kind. In terms of food, to start my boyfriend got the lobster bisque (5/5) and I got the black truffle gougères to share (4/5). My boyfriend said the lobster was amazing for a chilly day like when we went and the gougères were quite filling. For our entrees, my boyfriend got the duck--confit canard which came with roasted potato and morel sauce (4/5). And I got the papparadelle limone with créme fraîche, caviar, and chives (4/5). Both of our meals were delicious, my boyfriend's duck was moist and my pasta was the perfect balance between the tartness from the lemon juice and the saltiness from the caviar. We also ordered a bottle of wine with our meal, which I unfortunately forgot the name of. But I do remember that it paired really well with our meal. The restaurant is on the pricier side, so I would only come back for a really special occasion. My husband and I decided to drop by for a dinner date on a Friday evening. We first called since we had our dog with us and wanted to make sure they accommodated our four-legged cutie on their patio. Not only did they permit him, they offered to hold a table for us as we were driving from McLean. Apéro is nestled in a quieter, residential part of Georgetown - close to Stachowski Market and Rose Park - so parking is a lot easier than trying to snag something on M St or Wisconsin Ave. The outdoor patio looked very cute and cozy as we approached, complete with string lights and boxes of plants and flowers. The interior looked warm and inviting too, with its gold accents and blue-toned walls. We made a remark that we'd come back sans dog so we could sit inside and enjoy the ambiance there. It is most known as a champagne and caviar bar with a French fare. Our server was very friendly and sweet, offering our dog a container of water. We each ordered a cocktail and started with an ounce of the Kaluga Imperial Gold caviar. I chose the La Rue Vert, which is a lovely gin cocktail with matcha, pineapple, and hibiscus. Very ideal for the summer. My husband chose the "I Need a Tiki Drink" which, as its name suggests, is a delightful rum drink with combier, pineapple, and coconut lime. The caviar came on ice in a two-tier stand. The bottom tier had the traditional caviar accompaniments: chives, egg whites, hard boiled egg yolks, red onions, and capers, with a side of crème fraîche. While most restaurants serve caviar with crackers or blinis, Apéro serves theirs with crisp waffle sticks. I thought this was very clever, as I was able to easily assemble my caviar and accoutrements on the waffle stick. The caviar was divine and the perfect start to our dinner. For entrées, I opted for the confit canard and my husband chose the sea bass en papillote. My duck confit came with roasted potatoes and string beans in a morel sauce. The duck was cooked to perfection. The skin was crispy, the duck was tender, and the sauce was rich. And for dessert, I ordered the chocolate French silk mousse with a strawberry kiwi purée. Again, a lovely dessert that was velvety smooth but also packed a punch with slightly sweet and tart notes. While Apéro is certainly not an every night kind of meal for us, it's such a wonderful treat-yourself-date-night experience. Upon entering, I noticed there was no host stand, but then a server yells welcome and beckoned me and my friend to come in. We had a reservation by the window and were sat at a well-lit high top. We ordered two cocktails to start. I wish I could remember the names, but I know they were aesthetically pleasing. The food menu was no smaller than many COVID-era restaurants, yet still had stellar classics such as coq au vin, braised rabbit, and duck confit. We ordered the gougères, potato chips with onion crème, and paté on a leek waffle. The server was attentive to our needs and knew when to stop by to suggest a new drink. I got the pinot noir to pair with the paté. Decór is muted opulence with mostly black and dark blue tones and accents of gold. Other than the square chandeliers, the room was lit by a combination of real and fake candles. I was really impressed with the restrooms by simply providing feminine hygiene products displayed neatly in a basket on a shelf. Details matter, and that did it for me. The restaurant had such a pleasant food smell that lingered on me when heading home. My fiancé said I smelled like cippolini onions, which I can't even be mad about. The Gem of Georgetown West Village! This place just opened and it is already by far one of my favorite places in DC. (I couldn't help myself but go on two consecutive days) This beautiful chic place has an inviting atmosphere that caters to both special occasion dining and casual beautiful drinks after a long day. The cocktail menu selection is very innovative and every drink I had so far has not disappointed. Highly recommend trying the Fraise with Benefits as well as their matcha cocktail. On my first visit I tried their champagne and caviar pairing. My choice was on a lighter side but I will definitely be going back to try the rest of their extensive selection. Their cheese platter was absolutely exquisite and their pot de creme was divine. Aside their wonderful libations and dishes, I must note that I was impressed with their restroom. I know it is odd to note it on a review but their restroom is noteworthy. It is by far the best stock bathroom I have seen. If you accidentally spill wine, rest assure as their bathroom has a nifty wine spray remover. read more
