    Peach cobbler! Just get it!
    Tiffini D.

I've only tried the peach cobbler so far but it's the best I've had since I moved to Houston. With both a top and bottom layer of buttery crust, balanced with not too sweet, perfectly spiced peaches, the only thing that was missing was some vanilla bean ice cream. My coworkers have been raving about this new gem in the tunnels, one has even tried oxtails for the first time in his senior life and has since been back twice. API sets the bar a little higher for lunch downtown and I can't wait to try more of the menu myself.

Meatloaf meal; Mac & cheese and broccoli

Was craving some meatloaf and they were serving turkey meatloaf! Service was quick, meatloaf was decent (it's turkey so I didn't expect it to be overly juicy), the Mac and cheese is to die for, and broccoli was a good balance! Will be coming back for my soul food cravings!! The folks at the counter were super nice too!

Friendly staff with good selection of entrees and sides. The fried ribs were decent (though I've realized I'm just not a huge fan of fried ribs in general), but the collard greens with turkey and the shrimp pasta were delicious. The only drawback was there was about a 10 minute wait upon ordering the ribs as new ones had to be fried (which, however, was communicated upon ordering). Great operation, just be prepared to take a nap afterwards as the heaviness of such soul food is no joke!

    FRESH CATFISH

Absolutely delicious and Miss Kim is so nice and friendly! As you can see, I got the catfish, candied teams and cabbage. When I tell you this doggone catfish was so GOOD!! The yams were sweet and bussin! The cabbage was seasoned well and has vinegar in it. I also got the seafood pasta which was soooooo good AND the peach cobbla, that's right, cobbla NOT cobbler was SLAP YO MOMMA GOOD. A MUST GET!!! I'll be back Friday for lunch!

Fried chicken, greenbeans and Mac n cheese

If you are looking for southern style soul food, this is the place to come. Today I was craving fried chicken and this place delivered. My chicken was perfectly cooked and appealing to the eyes with a beautiful golden batter. It was crispy, flavorful and not overly seasoned. Plenty of sides available, went with greenbeans and mac n cheese. For dessert, I had to get my peach cobbler. Portions are generously served. If you are a mom with kids visting downtown, this meal can easily be shared between little ones. This place also has oxetails, baked chicken and depending on the day, porkchops. Everything looks and smells sooooo good. Just found out they do catering for events too.

TUESDAY SPECIAL!!! Smothered turkey wings with green beans and Mac n cheese!!
    Andy G.

Wow, I was in the area and decided I wanted Smothered wings, a Yelp search pulled this place up and it was only a couple miles from me. This place is In the tunnel so if you go to the address it's actually below that building easy parking and super easy to find also well worth it. Tuesday special was Smothered Turkey wings with sides. It was amazing and exactly what I was looking for, Wednesday is Oxtails and sides!! I'll be back for sure super friendly Owner!!

Finding good soul food in a new city is a journey... and baby, I've been on one since moving to…read moreHouston. After 3+ years of searching for something that gives me that Atlanta-level comfort, I can finally say I've found a real contender in Mikki's Soul Food Cafe. This was my second visit, and I ordered the same thing both times--the meatloaf dinner over rice with green beans (and this time I added mac and cheese). That meatloaf? Listen... seasoned just right, tender, and covered in a rich gravy that leans slightly tomato-based without being overpowering. Poured over fluffy rice? Yeah... they knew exactly what they were doing. The first visit was a 10/10. The green beans were everything--well-seasoned, tender, with bacon and onions. It gave "somebody's grandma been cooking all morning." Now... this second visit? The green beans came in a little confused. I got more potatoes and bacon than actual beans. I'm talking hide-and-seek levels trying to find a green bean in there. Still flavorful, but the balance was off. And the mac and cheese? Not my ministry. It was very heavy--extra cheesy to the point where the texture and flavor just didn't land for me. I won't be ordering that again. Let's talk price real quick: $19.95 (2 sides) $23.95 (3 sides) At first, I paused. But once you see the portion size? You calm down real quick. These are generous plates, easily stretching into two meals. Now here's my biggest issue--and it matters: The to-go packaging needs help. That gravy on the meatloaf is delicious, but it's also very liquidy. When you order to-go (like I did for lunch), it spills out into the container and bag during transport. By the time I got back to work, my tray was covered in grease and gravy, and it made eating a whole situation. This could easily be fixed by putting the gravy in a separate, sealed container. Final Verdict: When Mikki's hits, it hits. This is some of the closest I've found to real Southern soul food in Houston. A little more consistency with sides and better to-go packaging would take them all the way over the top. Rating: 4.5 stars (9/10) 1/2 And yes--I'm coming back. Next time, I'm bringing my mom for Sunday dinner.

The restaurant itself was also very clean and well kept. However, the staff could definitely improve on friendliness. There was no welcome, no smiles, and the cashier looked upset the entire time. You guys are first point of contact when we come in, please improve this. Also... the tea?! Guys, this was some of the BEST tea ever! So how do you run out of tea?! I do want to give special recognition to the bus lady. She was extremely attentive, constantly on her feet making sure everyone was taken care of. We ended up not going because of the wait but I went back with a friend earlier today and it was REALLY good. Like insanely good. I got the Chicken and Gravy while my friend got the Chicken and Waffles and we both finished our plates cleanly. The service was slow, yes, but they were extremely nice and did have multiple prefaces regarding the wait time. The only I had food wise was that the candied sweet potatoes were a little too sweet for me (and trust me, I love myself some candied sweet potatoes) and I feel like the okra or another one of the sides would've been a better fit for me. The chicken I had was extremely tender and juicy, and the gravy had the perfect amount of sweet and salty where I just gobbled it down with everything. The vibe is nice and homey and overall this place was just great. It for sure isn't someplace you can rush through in 30 minutes, but that kinda adds to the experience that you get the minute you walk in.
