Baked chicken with collards and black eyed peas
    Mauryce J.

Service was excellent. Baked chicken with black eyed peas and collards was really good. Collards a little salty but that's just me I'm sure. Love the jalapeño cornbread. The restaurant was nice and clean. Music a little loud so conversation was difficult. Parking is limited but free.

Someone got they Great grandma in the kitchen cooking up a mean meal!!! Because I'm still recovering from all the savory foods they got. This ain't no "im shy, I'll eat a salad" kinda place this place feeds your soul after Grace!! Good music to sing to while you're chatting it up with friends or family or just by yourself. Either way the food will keep you company!

It has been a very long time since my last visit to Mikki's so I was surprised at the changes I saw. First of all while the exterior is the same the interior is much nicer. Nice job! It has an upscale look and was nicely decorated including Christmas decor and playing enjoyable music. Also the long serving line was immaculate in appearance. I purchased the smothered chicken with two sides of rice and gravy and black eye peas for $18. It also came with a cornbread roll. Drinks here are bottled and then they have kool aid and sweet tea too. They also have what looked like a full bar for alcoholic beverages. My meal was very good tasting. The chicken, gravy, rice and peas were delicious and plenty in size. It was a very good meal. However, they serve all meals in to go containers which doesn't fit the upscale interior. It feels weird to take your food from a bag and then open up a plastic container to eat it. Also the cutlery that you are given (fork and knife) was very flimsy. It was hard to cut up the tender chicken with that knife. The fork looked like it was going to break when a load of peas was on it. Seriously the cutlery felt like something that would come in a cooking kit for a third grader. Please Mikki's get some better cutlery or tell your customers to bring their own! Finally, there were many, many small bones in the chicken and gravy. The chicken is on the bone so I don't know where they came from. They were small chicken bones and they had to be removed from the mouth, of course, which is never pleasant especially when dining with others. I will still give a 4 here believing that the bones was a one off but please spend more on the plastic cutlery!

We came here over 9 years ago leaving San Antonio heading back to New Orleans. When we stopped by, there were older people working here who were truly friendly and hospitable. They made us feel so welcomed that we bought more food for the road. Sadly, we didn't get that same reception today. The food then was exceptional; however, I can't say that it was anywhere near that quality today on 12/27/25. Not only was the quality way off, the price increased exponentially. I got the chicken and shrimp Alfredo, which notably had no shrimp. The pasta was overcooked as was the chicken chunks of breast in it. My sides were green beans and mac n cheese and they were decent. Overall, the taste is okay but what shocked me was the cost of a quart of mac n cheese at $20. That was a definite turnoff. You really don't make huge long term profits when you overcharge and out price your consumer base. My husband had the meatloaf, greens and sweet potatoes....he loved it but then again, he loves food period lol. I do like the new decor, it's super reminiscent of NOLA's Mardi Gras colors. Anyway, we more than likely won't return. We paid $50 for two plates and I'm left underwhelmed.

I love the remodeling that has taken place here! I have always done a takeout, but now, it is quite inviting if you choose to eat-in. The eating space is larger with more tables & chairs and they have added a bar where they sell frozen cocktails (think daiquiris). I continue to enjoy the food with each visit. Baked chicken is my go-to dish with cabbage, candied yams, & black eye peas. All 3 of those sides items & the chicken are winners. I typically would choose greens before green beans but here I give green beans an edge. Service is expedited to the degree that it can be. Choose your meat, move down the line to get your side items, cornbread & then desserts are at the cash register. Portions are a decent size. In general, dinners are $17-$22 (2 side items) or $21-$26 (3 side items) except oxtails which are $30 & $34. They remain a go-to for local soul food.

On the second we walked in the door we felt like family. This was our first trip in and it will definitely not be our last! Servings were huge, people were very nice, the food was delicious. My husband ate oxtail until his eyes crossed. I could not pick between the Black eyed peas and the green beans and I still can't because they were both delicious! There was no need to add salt or seasoning or anything because the flavors were spot on. Such an inviting and fabulous professional group of employees I can tell you that we were very impressed! Happy anniversary to us and #soulfood makes our heart overflow :) Happy #anniversary to us!

Really awesome Soulfood restaurant. Easy to pick what you want. The food is absolutely delicious. The establishment is very clean. I would definitely love to come back here and try some more of their food.

Meatloaf over rice with green beans and cornbread
    Koko S.

Finding good soul food in a new city is a journey... and baby, I've been on one since moving to Houston. After 3+ years of searching for something that gives me that Atlanta-level comfort, I can finally say I've found a real contender in Mikki's Soul Food Cafe. This was my second visit, and I ordered the same thing both times--the meatloaf dinner over rice with green beans (and this time I added mac and cheese). That meatloaf? Listen... seasoned just right, tender, and covered in a rich gravy that leans slightly tomato-based without being overpowering. Poured over fluffy rice? Yeah... they knew exactly what they were doing. The first visit was a 10/10. The green beans were everything--well-seasoned, tender, with bacon and onions. It gave "somebody's grandma been cooking all morning." Now... this second visit? The green beans came in a little confused. I got more potatoes and bacon than actual beans. I'm talking hide-and-seek levels trying to find a green bean in there. Still flavorful, but the balance was off. And the mac and cheese? Not my ministry. It was very heavy--extra cheesy to the point where the texture and flavor just didn't land for me. I won't be ordering that again. Let's talk price real quick: $19.95 (2 sides) $23.95 (3 sides) At first, I paused. But once you see the portion size? You calm down real quick. These are generous plates, easily stretching into two meals. Now here's my biggest issue--and it matters: The to-go packaging needs help. That gravy on the meatloaf is delicious, but it's also very liquidy. When you order to-go (like I did for lunch), it spills out into the container and bag during transport. By the time I got back to work, my tray was covered in grease and gravy, and it made eating a whole situation. This could easily be fixed by putting the gravy in a separate, sealed container. Final Verdict: When Mikki's hits, it hits. This is some of the closest I've found to real Southern soul food in Houston. A little more consistency with sides and better to-go packaging would take them all the way over the top. Rating: 4.5 stars (9/10) 1/2 And yes--I'm coming back. Next time, I'm bringing my mom for Sunday dinner.

Mikis is the place! Hands down they have the best soul food in Houston! So good in fact we went twice out of the three days we were in the area! Everything is good! The smothered turkey wings, the meatloaf, green beans, greens, mac n cheese, sweet potato's, and etc!!! My friend even got to try their chitterlings and said they were good. I'll be back when in Houston!

Make sure to bring your appetite to this place. They are not stingy with the food. The people are really nice as you walk through the line to order. It's spacious inside, so seating was no issue. Food was hot, fresh, and tasted great. It reminded me of my grandmother's soulful cooking. I had the meatloaf, sweet yams, and collard greens. Oh, and I had to wash it down with some kool-aid.

Oxtails, mac and cheese, and beans

We had just got back from a mini vacation and was looking for a soul food restaurant that was open since it was Memorial Day. Came across this place as a recommendation so we decided to stop. Upon arrival we got in line (food is served buffett style) We decided on the oxtails mac and cheese, baked beans, Brisket, mac and cheese, and yams and 2 big Reds. Everything was very welll proportioned and seasoned well. We were checking out and realized the prices on the board didn't align with what we were charged ex: Oxtails board states 29.95 we were charged 32.95 there was no price on the beef brisket however they rang up as beef tips 23.95. The bathroom didnt have any paper towels and the hand dryer didn't work. Other than that it was a pretty good experience. And we will return.

It was more steams than this! but this is how big they were throughout!!

The vibe is great, the decor is awesome, the food delivers consistently, and service rarely takes a day off -- it's just a solid place to go when you're up for some great southern comfort classics. Cocktails, delicious. The daily food specials make it refreshing. The oysters never disappoint. We've rarely had to wait long on any ordered items and servers are all top notch. My only minor complaint is some of the larger groups visiting can sometimes forget there are others in the restaurant. We don't need to hear your entire conversation about the latest office gossip.

We went on a Saturday for lunch. Hopefully this was just a one-off, but if you're looking for good Cajun boiled crawfish, this is not it. We started off with 6 lbs (group of 4) of their regular crawfish. First off, they put the Cajun seasoning on outside/shell (!!), which is a cardinal sin for Cajuns. They also minimally seasoned the boil, so the meat was lacking salt and flavor. We ordered 3 more lbs with the "wet sauce" (garlic butter), thinking the lack of flavor may be attributed to this being the first-ish batch of the day. Nope, the second batch was even less seasoned than the first. The sauce was good, but it didn't make up for the unseasoned meat. The crawfish were a good size, at least... Come on guys, I expect more from a Gulf Coast seafood restaurant!

We were sat relatively quick, I would put reservation for this place if I were you, but when we came it wasn't too busy. We were sat and was greeted by our server, Fabian. The vibe was very nice, had the R&B jams in the background but wasn't overly loud to where you can't converse. It was a beautiful sunny day outside and it reflected all throughout the large windows of the restaurant. A+ for the ambiance. We started off with mimosa carafes for the table, great blend of juice and champagne. No complaints at all about the mimosas. He started us with a round of biscuits, with butter & jelly on the side. Would give it overall rating of 8.5/10, I actually liked them they weren't too sweetened like other biscuits. For food, I ordered the Buttermilk Waffles, turkey links, and side of Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese. The food was good, above average in my opinion. The buttermilk waffles weren't overly crisp but still had nice warm flavor (8.7/10), turkey links were satisfactory (8.1/10), and the mac & cheese was above average as well, not out of this world but pretty good nonetheless (8.0/10). In my opinion, I give this restaurant a 5-stars, not just because of the food (4 stars), but just the overall experience. The ambiance was great, our server was hilarious, kept us entertained the entire time, and they were convenient nonetheless. They do 20% auto-gratuity as well. After ordering cocktails, it took approximately 20 minutes for them to arrive. We then ordered our meals... I had the burger and fries, while my girlfriend ordered the shrimp and grits. Both dishes were noticeably over salted. After finishing our meals, we waited an additional 15-20 minutes just to receive a dessert menu. Eventually, we decided not to wait any longer and went to Dessert Gallery down the street instead. While the atmosphere and appearance of the restaurant were excellent, the slow service and food issues negatively impacted the experience. Based on this visit, I would likely not return.
