I took my dad here after going to Beautifica 360 at the natural science museum. We wanted a taste of authentic southern food with a kick of class. I have heard mixed reviews of Lucilles but had to try it out myself. Sadly, it was not my favorite. Here's why: I wanted to try Houstons restaurant week menu. I tried their chilly cheese rolls for starters. When taking our first bite, it was cold on the inside and hit on the outside which tells me they were not fresh. Then, their roasted chicken was a strange mix of dark meat and a cut off piece of white meat chicken. A very small dallop of what seems to have been a clumpy mashed potatoe.. my dad ordered their friend chicken. Very small pieces for what you pay. I was kind of shocked. I had to do something g to save our dinner so I ordered their corn bread. We loved their cornbread. Moist, buttery and soft! I ordered their bread pudding for desert too. Was pretty good but not memorable. Overall, a let down for us. You can't win them all but glad we came to check this one off of our list.
Amazing, amazing place! We admit that we went in a little closer to their closing time in the afternoon, but they still accommodated us and told us it would be ok as long as we got our order in before the kitchen closed. Our waitress was excellent and even provided us with some nice recommendations to explore Houston since we were visiting for the first time. We got the fried green tomatoes, watermelon/feta salad, hot rolls, and croissant french toast. The tomatoes and french toast were the hits of the show. So freaking delicious! Would definitely love to come here again if we visit.
Stopped here for a Saturday brunch after a morning at the Children's museum, which is a 2 minute walk away. There was no wait. The place is really cute! They had a high chair for my toddler. I tried the oxtail omelette and a side of grits with some added cheese. The omelette was good with some hot sauce, but otherwise it lacked acidity. The pickled onions that it comes with were perfect but sparse. I think the grits have garlic powder in it which is a little different for me. The bread pudding must have cardamom in it, which I love, but I could have used a little more sauce on top. Our waiter, Byron, was attentive and so sweet to my daughter. I will likely come back for another brunch after the museum with more family in the future and try some other menu items.
We wanted a good meal that didn't have a dress code. The valet parking is $10. For appetizers we did the scallops (which is served with succotash), chili biscuits, jalapeño poppers w brisket. The chili biscuits are very small and kind of like a flaky croissant pinwheel. They were really good. I got the oxtail tamales for my entree. The best dish was server recommended, blackened catfish and add shrimp. The service was friendly and drinks were good. I would recommend dining here.
Still as good as I remember! We were one of the last reservations, so I feel like the mac & cheese wasn't baked as long, but still one of my favorite dishes here as well as their fried catfish I usually get it alone or with the catfish and grits combination. I hated that they were out of the oxtail meat to add to the catfish and grits and fried green tomatoes, but again we were the last table of the day so that was probably why. Service was just OK this time I've had the same server before.
This restaurant has been on my try list for a while and it was worth the wait. This was a group outing and I tried the chili biscuits as appetizer and the seared salmon as my main dish. I wasn't a huge fan of the chili biscuits, it lacked flavor or soul. My colleagues enjoyed the fried green tomatoes. My salmon was really good and the flavors were complimentary. The green rice was excellent and full of flavor. I had a ginger ale for the drink to help wash down my meal. Our sever was Rick who was easy on the eyes, attentive, and friendly. The atmosphere is a mix of modern and contemporary. It's an ode to Lucille with black and white images and other aesthetic. I would love to come back and try other items on the menu. Again great place for a lunch date or sharing meals with colleagues. See y'all next time!
Made reservations ahead of time via Opentable. We were able to get seated right away and thank goodness we did cause it was super busy on a Saturday for brunch. We got the Croissant French Toast + Wings (I was a bit disappointed in the french toast, as it was super soggy, like it was left out for a long time and didn't have the satisfactory crisp when you bit into the layers. The wings were seasoned really nicely and nice n crunchy). Also, got the Chicken and Waffles (the sweet potato waffles were fluffy and chicken wings were the same as the ones that came with the french toast). I gave the service some grace, just cause it was a saturday for lunch time so i expected it to be busy. Parking - Valet $10, they accept card too Seating - Both indoor and outdoors seating They had good music playing in the background and not too loud.
Everything here was amazing! We came here for brunch on a cozy Saturday afternoon. The food was authentic and they made everything we ordered just right. The fried green tomatoes were a small portion but the way they battered and garnished it elevated the flavor. I really enjoyed the chicken & waffle that came with a sweet potato waffle which I feel like every restaurant needs to include on their menu! It was soft and fluffy and balanced out the savoriness of the chicken. The chicken itself was so juicy and tender, perfectly fried. The croissant French toast was incredible - so buttery and crispy. You can get the wings spicy and that added a great kick to that as well. The service was quick and our server ran down everything on the menu for us to make sure we really got what we wanted and we did. There were other items my girlfriend I were bouncing around because everything sounded so good and we heard from other reviews as well which means we'll be coming back to try even more authentic items. This is a top brunch spot for me, but I'll come back to try the dinner items as well.
Want a southern brunch that your auntie will enjoy? This place has great comfort home cooked food with a modern twist. Located in downtown and just a brisk walk from Herman park and museums, it welcomes you with open arms. We tried the croissant French toast with the crispy wings, which were unique but wasn't exactly what we had expected. It was a bit underwhelming the fluffy texture of croissants was lost and the moistness of French toast wasn't even noticeable. The wings however were delicious, nice flavor and spice with lots of crunch. My favorite dish was the fried green tomatoes, it was nice surprise! It was packed with juicy textures and the accompanying spicy aioli and goat cheese really brought the flavors together in a harmonious symphony. The oxtail tamales were good but not great, they left me feeling meh since plate didn't reflect the price. The hot chicken sandwich left me with the same impression, but the chicken was quite flavorful and crunchy. I'll definitely be back to try their happy hour to get a better deal on the plates.
Lucille's has quickly become one of my favorite spots in Houston. Everything is on point, especially the service. On my last visit, I was greeted by Ronnei, the smiling and beautiful hostess up front, and then taken care of by Rick and Meme, who both delivered amazing southern hospitality. The menu has plenty of great options for all tastebuds, and everything I've tried so far has been delicious with that homemade feel. The atmosphere inside is super versatile, it can be laid-back or a little more upscale, but either way, it always feels comfortable, like a real southern kitchen.
Ambiance....lovely old house, wood floors, cozy. Staff was so friendly and welcoming. This is a bold statement, but I stand behind it....I had croissant French toast with spicy wings.....this beat out Breakfast Klub by miles. Fried green tomatoes to start with were amazing, full of flavor! Ox tail omelette was unique and perfectly seasoned. Bacon was thick and delicious. Peach mimosas....yum. Can't wait to go back to try the dinner menu, but brunch here is a MUST.
One of the best spots in town for classy Southern food! I am a big fan of their brunch menu. They have so many delicious options. You can't go wrong with their Chicken and Waffles. The chicken is fried to peak perfection. Each bite is so crispy and flavorful. The waffles are perfectly made as well. Crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside. Shrimp and Grits are also fantastic too! Grits are out of this world! This was my first time at Lucille's, but it won't be my last. I am excited to try their dinner options in the future. I can't wait!
While in Houston, Texas in October, 2016, I had to get my Southern food fix. My search found Lucile's, so DJ and I had supper here on the evening of Friday, October 28. Housed in a cozy, vintage house, Lucille's is nestled in a residential area in the heart of Houston's Museum District. We easily found nearby street parking. The restaurant is a casual dining place with dark wood furnishings. We sat in the back room, a much more intimate and comfy area than the main dining room where the bar resides. The venue appeared to be clean and tidy during the night of our visit. Lucille's menu offers modern takes on Southern classics such as PORK & BEANS and FRIED OYSTERS, paying tribute to the brother cofounders' great-grandmother, Lucille B. Smith. We started out our dinner with the FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, a small plate of four slices seasoned with cornmeal and topped with small dollops of goat cheese and drizzles of spicy aioli, yum. DJ continued with another vegetarian dish and I ordered the SHRIMP & GRITS for my entrée. My bowl was nice and filling, topped with generous slices of andouille sausage and plump gulf shrimp. If you are a lover of shrimp and grits, this dish is definitely for you. Southern hospitality is what we experienced during our visit; we were welcomed with warmth and kindness during the entire evening. A delightful time we had at Lucille's. I will definitely return if/when I am back in Houston.

When I walked in, I loved the atmosphere and the way they kept the old look of building giving it a modern twist. It made me feel like I took a trip back in time where community was strong, food was made with love and the table was where everyone caught up on life. There is a full bar and is a steady but not overwhelming crowd for Friday brunch. It was our first time and went to celebrate my mom's birthday. Mimi was our server and she was AMAZING. Because there are no pictures on the menu, she gave very detailed visual descriptions of the meals we were interested in. She did not steer us wrong. We ordered the kids burger, catfish and grits with shredded oxtail and chicken and waffles. All exceeded the expectation and left us with full bellies. The portions are larger than normal but not too much where there is waste or leftovers (at least for us). The waffles are sweet potato and they were very tasty. I'm not a fan of sweet potato waffles because many times they are grainy-like and the texture isn't pleasing. However, these waffles were light and perfectly cooked. It came with bourbon maple pecan syrup that complimented the flavor of the waffle. The chicken and catfish were fried to perfection and the oxtail was tender. It's a pricier place for brunch. We didn't mind because we were celebrating mom's birthday. I will definitely return for a trip to the bar and for the food for special occasions. Overall, 10 out of 10. read more

Everything here was amazing! We came here for brunch on a cozy Saturday afternoon. The food was authentic and they made everything we ordered just right. The fried green tomatoes were a small portion but the way they battered and garnished it elevated the flavor. I really enjoyed the chicken & waffle that came with a sweet potato waffle which I feel like every restaurant needs to include on their menu! This place was recommended to me as I was visiting Houston for the first time. Very open to peoples recommendations when I'm going to a new city so I didn't think anything of it ... I wish I did. Came here for brunch seated quickly but took awhile for them to serve us let alone take our order. My entree was the Chicken Fried Steak (one of my favorite comfort meals) and I was NOT impressed with this version. It lacked flavor, the gravy on top didn't even save the dish. The Mac and cheese was not it either. It looked delicious but it was well melted on top but soon as you got on the inside the consistency was off it was watery. The cornbread overcooked and hard. Not enjoyable whatsoever. Overall from my entire stay in Houston over 4/5 days this ranked last in all of the meals I had during my stay. I would not recommend unfortunately, there's plenty of other places to go for brunch in Houston. read more

The restaurant was very impressive and the history is even more impressive - The staff was very attentive and responsive - On to the food, we were very pleased with our orders and continued to notice others meals being brought out looked even tastier, lol - Wifey grabbed the Chicken and Waffles, while I grabbed the burger and fries, I'm a simple guy, lol - The food was above average, regarding the taste - If you are in the Houston area, this is one place you should visit - read more
Didn't live up to the hype Came for dinner. 7pm reservation on a Wednesday. When we arrived there was water everywhere. Gave the keys to the valet and went to help my wife literally jump a puddle with heels on to get to the restaurant sidewalk. Turned back to get my phone out of the car and the valet sped off like it was his own car. When we got inside the entire restaurant smelled like old antiques. It's a very distinctive smell. Not the aroma of incredible flavors greeting you at the door, no, antiques. The decor was very minimal and in no way upscale. This is sold as an upscale soul food restaurant; I don't see it. They sat us at the smallest table in the restaurant, pushed against an obscure wall, DIRECTLY outside the swinging door to the kitchen. This is what a reservation gets you on a slow night? Interesting. We asked to move over to a table nearby. They told us that's for "four people" but still moved us. Let's get to the food: Jalepeno poppers- 2/10 It's literally two jalepenos halved and stuffed for $14. These were the worst I've had anywhere. Hard jalepenos, chewy brisket and just not good. Oxtail tamales- 9/10 These were very good. The roja sauce is what really made it stand out. Great spice level. But for $23 it should have been more than two mini tamales. They were tiny Catfish and grits- 8/10 Great catfish. Fried, battered and seasoned very well. The grits are as basic as it gets. Cheese grits were an extra dollar and made no difference at all. $29 + $1 Shrimp and grits- 6/10 Basic shrimp and basic grits. Nothing special about this plate at all. Not upscale, not inventive. Just basic. $28 Collard greens- 1/10 These are easily the worst greens I've had. This includes cookouts, home kitchens and restaurants. Just bad. No seasoning, odd topping dropped on top. No meat. Gimme some ham hocks or turkey necks...something. Also not a fan of large chunks of stems in my greens. I don't mind some texture but this was excessive. $8 for a small portion. One of the servers had grabbed my keys for me so I could get my phone before we ate. I then realized the valet lot is a pothole obstacle course. Giant puddles and huge potholes everywhere. Also, no one monitors it. So when we left I told the valet here's a tip and I'll grab my own car. I had the keys already and was still slightly upset that he drove it so fast and didn't wait for me to grab my phone. Tipped him $5 and he said no, it's $10. I told him I'm getting it myself and you drove off with my phone after I told you to wait. He didn't budge. Cool, take your $10 but you're not driving my car again. Service was average. Typical recommendations of whatever is the most expensive on the menu and literally no information nor descriptions of any of the dishes. My Wife asked for help deciding between the catfish and grits or the yard bird. Instead the waitress sidestepped answering the question and recommended either the fish fry or the pork shank. Nice Spent $150 before tip and valet for the two of us. I really don't see anything at all about this restaurant that justifies the price point. I can get better versions of everything we ate elsewhere. Wouldn't recommend. read more

This update could have easily remained 4 stars, but the way my best friend and I were treated by one of the hostesses has downgraded my rating. We came in for brunch about a month ago. We made a reservation online and we were aware of the 90 minute time limit per table. I can't remember our server's name, but he was nice. As it got busier, he wasn't as attentive as he was in the beginning. This wasn't really an issue until the end of the meal when we had a horrible interaction with the hostess. Service got slower once the restaurant got busy. There were times when we tried to wave our server down so we could order a drink or dessert. Because of those delays, it caused us to hit the limit on our 90 minutes. My best friend and I had literally grabbed our purses after paying and were about to leave when one of the hostesses came over and basically told us to get up because they needed to turn the table over. I can't recall the exact wording but it was something along the lines of "We have a 90 minute table limit and you will have to get up so we can seat our next guest." It was so inappropriate and the table next to us were just as shocked as we were. I cut the hostess off midway through her rambling and told her that we were literally standing up to leave. We understand the need to turn over tables, but it could have been handled so differently. For one, the hostess was talking fast and her word choice was unprofessional. I almost didn't understand what she was saying when she came over. Here's a suggestion: have the hostess or server notify patrons about 15 minutes before their reservation is going to end so that patrons are aware and can wrap up their meal. Coming at us, talking a mile a minute, and basically telling us to get up is just so trashy and disrespectful. My best friend called Lucille's to make a complaint and kept playing phone tag with a staff member. I still don't know if she was actually able to speak to someone. The food and drinks were good, so no issues there. I enjoyed the Fried Green Tomatoes and Oxtail Omelette. I also enjoyed my Espresso Martini. As good as the food and drinks were, the crap treatment by the hostess ruined an otherwise nice brunch all in the span of 30 seconds. read more
Found Lucille's on Instagram and I was not disappointed in the dinning experience here. I loved the decor and all the artwork. I had been wanting some good southern home cooking and I was very pleased with the experience here. For our appetizer we had their Famous Chili Biscuits. They were not what I was expecting but a very and delicious surprise. I was expecting biscuits with like chili powder on top but they were biscuits stuffed with chili and I loved them. I ordered the Yardbird as my entree. The chicken was fried to perfection and the mashed potatoes were great, but unfortunately the collard greens didn't change my opinion on collard greens. (I have never been a fan of collard greens) Overall the service was really good and I really enjoyed the food. I recommend Lucille's and I will be back to eat more. read more
I'll start this review by saying I was really looking forward to dining here. Great vibe inside, perfectly set up for elevated southern comfort. The evening started off strong with very good cocktails, and killer fried green tomatoes and boudin balls. Then it was downhill from there. Had their gumbo with oysters added. There were two things missing from the gumbo...roux and flavor. I've never had a gumbo where there was not an ounce of roux in it. If you look at the pic, it was thinner than a chicken stock...and with less flavor. The oysters were off putting as well...I don't think they were fresh, or at minimum, not local gulf oysters. I only ate a third, and that's saying something because I hate wasting food. Next up with the fish fry. This night it was a whole branzino. This is a fish I normally love. But the meat on this was unusually mushy. Think of it like textured mashed potatoes. It was not good, and like my gumbo, without much flavor. The salad with nouc mam dressing was nice though. (4.5/5 ) Visited Lucille's for brunch and the food was amazing. The oxtail omelet was meaty and flavorful, and the macaroni and cheese was super cheesy, just how I like it. The brunch beverage setup was a pour-your-own mimosa, which I loved because I like mine strong. Hopefully no one was judging. Every other time I've been to Lucille's, the cocktails haven't been that strong, so I really appreciated being able to make it myself. Our waiter was incredibly nice and attentive. So welcoming and sweet. Overall, I love the ambiance of the restaurant. It feels like being at someone's kitchen table or at my aunt's house with a hearty home-cooked meal. The history and homage to the owners' matriarch is beautiful to take in, especially paired with all the wall art celebrating Black culture and history. I always enjoy peeking at the recipe box on display. It's clearly a valued family heirloom and a special touch that makes the space feel even more intimate. Nearby street parking is a big plus. I will say the restaurant itself is not the biggest space, so I can imagine it might get a bit tight or be a wait on a busier day. Came for a Bible study group dinner! Had seating for all 11 and were very accommodating. Service was quick and very attentive. Food was amazing as always. Lucille's is a go to for dinner and brunch for me! I always get their fried green tomatoes and I switched it up and got their braised oxtails and they were fantastic. Highly recommend read more
I have had lunch and brunch here with my family and they are both great. I could tell you about the excellent chicken and waffles that my father in law gets, the shrimp and grits, the French toast, the Mac and cheese, the hamburgers, and the wonderful egg Benedict varieties they have but the collard greens overshadow all of this. They are the best I have ever had. They grow their food and they are fresh and have pork in them. Not over cooked and the taste is the best ever. Seriously I would recommend this place just for the collard greens, but everything else is great too. Excellent and friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Came to meet with a new girlfriend. She highly recommended this spot. She recommended the shrimp or catfish and grits. I went with the catfish since it's higher in protein and the shrimp and grits only come with 4 shrimp. It's was full of flavor and in scored the whole thing. Recommend making a reservation, we didn't. Even though it wasn't busy at all they told us it would be a 20 min wait time since we didn't make a reservation. Thankfully there was an opening at the bar, so we were able to get seated quickly. They also don't seat you until your whole party is present, so be aware of that too. we ordered the French toast and chicken wings and the hot chicken sandwich with side of collard greens, Chicken wings were fried hard dry, no seasoning and were extra small. The "collard" greens were mustard greens and spinach very mushy textured possible cooked too long even though we had to wait extra for them to come out because they were "still cooking" Service was mid. The brunch menu is very small on options really there is way better brunch spots in Houston. Wait for a server was super long and food and even drinks too along time to come out. read more

My friends and I went for brunch. I just want to note the restaurant closes at 3pm and we went at 2pm. We were seated and not rushed at all. Our server recommended some items on the menu. And she told us how we could make out own entree which is what I did. I got a piece of cat fish and pair it with French toast. The French toast was thick and flavorful, the fist well battered. I had a lemon drop and a Bellini both were great. Our waitress even told us about Jazz nights where they have Jazz music in Fridays on the patio I will defiantly rerun for it. 10 out of 10!!! read more
I heard great things about the restaurant but I must say I was slightly disappointed. Let's starts with parking. There is valet parking available which is always great. I ordered the fried chicken which came with greens and mash potatoes. My food was lukewarm without much flavor. I also ordered a strawberry lemonade which was also bland and not what I expected. What an amazing restaurant!!! I was visiting my sister in Houston and she took me here for brunch right when my flight landed, what a treat that was! From the quick and friendly service, to the homey warm ambiance, Lucille's is the restaurant for you if you wanna grab a quick brunch or wanna sit down and catch up with family and friends. I can't emphasize how tasty this food was. Everything was hot when served and tasted AMAZING! It's not. Casual works just fine. I suggest calling to confirm or checkout the indoor pics of the restaurant.
What is the parking setup? Is there free parking?
They offer a valet and street parking. The metered parking may be free after 6pm.
What is the difference between main, dining and patio seating? Which is recommended for a group of 8-10?
Main dining is inside the restaurant. Patio is outside. For a group of 8 -10 main seating is recommended. Call first, I was told they could only accommodate a party of 6.
On the weekends, can you order off the lunch menu as well as the brunch menu?
Yes, you can order off either of the menus.
Do they have a private room? If so, how many does it seat?
It's seems to be a very small place so most likely no.
Do you need a reservation for brunch (Saturday or Sunday)?
I have not been to brunch here. But, I have read reviews that suggest that it is so busy that you SHOULD have a reservation. It isn't required. But, highly suggested. I am definitely glad I had a reservation when I went here for dinner.
Social distancing in place for outside seating?
YES, all of the tables are spread out.
What is the parking situation? Is it pretty easy to park?
Yes! When we went they had valet right up front. Love Lucille's!
Do they have bottomless mimosas on sundays? If so, what's the price?
Yes they used too but apparently the city of Houston doesn't allow bottomless mimosas. I just asked one of the servers.
What are the happy hour times and what's on the happy hour menu?
Happy Hour is 3-6 Tuesday thru Friday. It has a bunch of discounted (from the regular menu) happy hour bites and beer, wine, and cocktail specials.
What kind of vegan options are there?
They have the roasted butternut squash as an appetizer that is phenomenal. There is also a Vegetarian Entree of Sprouts and Lentils that is vegan if you ask for no sour cream. Some of the other items on the menu like the Truffled Brussel Sprouts…
