First time here. A friend told us about it, so we decided to drop in and check it out. It's a charming spot, surrounded by beautiful fields of apple trees, heavy with this year's crop. We spent most of our time browsing the gift shop and bakery. From the "Happy Camper" coffee trailer out front, we grabbed hot beverages along with a couple of delicious bakery items -- a pumpkin cream muffin and a pumpkin scone. We took these to the enclosed patio out front and enjoyed them while listening to a musician playing guitar and singing. It made for a lovely afternoon. I would definitely return, and next time I'd make sure to try the wine tasting. read more

Very cute orchard! The store line gets long but goes by fairly quickly. I loved the live music and apple cider donuts (warm!) too. The wine tasting was for their fruit wine, which is a little too sweet for me. The orchard and pumpkin patch itself were across the street from the seating area - we walked around but chose not to actually pick the apples that day. read more

There are a few sizable apple orchards for fall apple-picking tourism in southern Wisconsin. Apple Barn is my favorite. Unlike another popular orchard, It's not right off I-94, which makes it a little less convenient, but it also makes it much more scenic and much less busy. When you're there, you'll really feel like you got away somewhere on a mini-vacation. Yes, it gets busy in peak season, but not crazy busy. And it's easy enough to find. Parking is available in a vast field, and it's pretty straightforward. Bathrooms are a row of port-a-potties and handwashing stations. They're cleaner than you think, but obviously, using them earlier in the day is going to be better. The orchards are well maintained, and you can check their website or social media for updates about what's available for picking. Pumpkins weren't ready last week, but it looks like soon. When we were there last weekend, the Cortland apples were our favorite. Be aware that everyone wants honeycrisp, and they're in a separate section of the orchard that costs more. If you don't feel like picking, they have a designated (cold!) room inside the store with bags of pre-picked apples. We always pick some and buy a couple bags. We are swimming in apples right now. They make and sell a variety of wines, and we usually get a bottle or two. The hardy pear wine goes great with a Thanksgiving turkey. See what you like at the wine tasting station. The staff is friendly, and surprisingly, this year, we didn't think any of the wines were too sweet. Over the past ten years or so, I'd say they have upped their wine game considerably. If you want to get lunch, there are food trucks there and a bunch of picnic tables. Or you can bring your own. Or check out a few pretty good restaurants in Elkhorn. If your kids want to play, they have a big old truck that appears to be intended for that. Or at least it's fair game. Buy all the apple butter, scented candles, pastries, tea towels with clever sayings, and cider you can carry in their crafty little store. And you'd have to be insane not to pick up a few cider doughnuts, fresh and warm from the fryer. I mean this. Do not drive all the way to Sugar Creek, Wisconsin, and not get those apple cider doughnuts. There's a ton going on during the fall weekends, and it all has a very local, very friendly vibe. Put on your cozy sweater, track down your grandma's apple pie recipe, and get out there for the most autumnal small-town style Saturday you could want. read more

Saw a flyer for this place in our local newspaper, and thought I would check it out. Christmas was in the air. Homegrown apples, homemade pies, candy, cheeses, sausage, etc. This happened to be the Christmas time of year, so a lot of stocking stuffers and quaint gifts were available for purchase. Gift boxes available to. Wine samples on premises. Not only does Apple Barn orchard have apples, but they also make their own wine. Many varieties of delicious wines to choose from. They also have wine tasting on premise. Everyone was very cordial and Holiday spirited if you're in the area, especially on weekends, stop in and check it out. Plenty of free parking. read more

Love the hot and fresh donuts at Apple Barn Orchard and Winery. It's a must stop for us when we visit Lake Geneva or Lake Delavan. It's a family farm that has spent four generations getting things right. Wine tastings are outside these days. It's a cute setup and someone will come to you to take your order. Wines are sweeter but not all of them. Prices are more than reasonable if you want to purchase a bottle to take home. Staff is helpful. read more

A great apple orchard with lots to offer for both families and young professionals. There's apple cider, apple cider donuts, wine tasting, a couple pop up boutiques, roaring food trucks, and a variety of apples to choose from! I visited the Apple Barn with co-workers around 9am on a Saturday where the grounds were already alive with people. The line for wine tasting was short so we decided to go for it. Each person got three free tastings. They have a variety of fruity wines that cover everything from dry to sweet and red to white. The spiced rhubarb wine was my personal favorite! It seems to be a popular one as they only had one bottle left when we went. In terms of food, of course we got the apple cider donuts which were absolutely delicious! They were light and fluffy (which are personally my favorite kind of donut) and you could taste the apple cider. Would definitely recommend, don't get discouraged by the long line it moves fast! Apple picking itself was a lot of fun! We opted for Honeycrisp apples which had their own little section. The ripe rows are clearly indicated and the apples we picked were sweet and crisp! The rows weren't crowded and there were plenty of apples to be picked. If you're in the area the Apple Barn is well worth a visit :) read more

I'm very disappointed. I checked the website before driving over an hour to verify that the honey crisp were ready to pick. When I got there, they said honey crisp picking doesn't start for 1 more day and wouldn't let us pick them. Please know the website is not accurate. The apples they did have for picking were inedible and tasteless. They did have good varieties pre-picked, but they were very bruised. On a better note, the apple donuts were delicious and so was the cider. Covid precautions were followed well. read more

My 1 star goes directly to the lovely young lady running the wine tastings. She was energetic and welcoming and knew what she was talking about. Aside from her, the rest of the staff were quite passive. We were not even greeted as we entered the main barn. I visited on a Friday afternoon and the place was deserted. They ran out of donuts, had no staff greeting, and the orchard and pumpkin patch were closed. It was essentially a waste of our time driving out. Quite disappointed in the service and will not be returning. read more

After having been disappointed (but not exactly surprised) at many of the nearby business' response to COVID (business as usual, no mask or social distancing requirements), Apple Barn was a welcome change; all of the staff wore masks and cleaned both the tables and menus after each use. The place itself was super cute and had a great bakery, we tried the muffins and cookies and both were delicious. They were still able to do wine tastings outside due to all their precautions and we were pleasantly surprised that three samples per person were complementary! The wine was pretty good and we ended up ordering a full glass to enjoy outside. The staff also was lovely, very friendly and suggested a brewery and farm stand nearby we could visit. We ended up going to both and had a great day! I will definitely return when I'm back in the area! read more

Went back again for a second visit over the weekend! Once again this place was up to par! Everyone that works there was beyond friendly and welcoming, and recommended other places to stop by in the area (including a brewery that just opened up!) Wine is really good, and everything is reasonably priced! Way less busy than places like Goebberts, which has a lot going on, but I am not a fan. I prefer the smaller family owned, small town feel which this place has. read more

I LOVE Apple Barn. So much so that I bully my friends to come with me on an annual pligrimage. No, we don't have kids. No, we are not silly 20 something hipsters. YES we love apples, wine, and pumpkins! Apple Barn is the perfect combination experiences, while avoiding the tacky craziness of some orchards (which now offer rides, clowns, petting zoos and other non-fall related nonsense). First off, it's worth the time to go the back way from Milwaukee (set your GPS to "avoid highways" and take in a scenic drive through rural and tiny town south eastern Wisconsin. Then, park for free, directed by friendly people. NO PETS. Walk up to the barn and you will find: 1) Apple Picking! You can choose two sizes of bags to pick into. There are wagons to help you haul your pickings, but they are few in number. If you have your own, bring it. There is also a helpful chart to let you know what is picking and what they are good for. 2) Pumpkin picking! There is a huge field with pumpkins of wide ranging sizes. Allegedly the biggest ones are ten dollars, and the medium ones are five. Every year I grab the biggest one I can carry, and every year I pay five dollars. I now believe that they actually just want you to take them. There are also small pumpkins for a buck and decorative gourds, 3 for a dollar. 3) Live music! There is always a real live human singing country gold standards. It's amazing. 4) Snacks! There are cider donuts, cider, caramel apples, apple sundaes, and a whole food truck of goodness with everything from brats to tamales. Everything is cheap. Everything is cash only at the food truck. Beware. 5) Lovely gift shop with FREE WINE TASTING. Lovely other items too. Everyone is friendly, everyone is having a blast. Go here. You won't regret it. read more

Went here Labor Day weekend. There was one bin of apples, no donuts. I don't get it. So we went to take photos by the giant apple and walked alongside the orchard and the owner came out at yelled at us because we weren't supposed to be there. Even though there's a giant OPEN flag there. Nothing to do and nothing to buy on a prime holiday weekend. Doesn't make sense to me. read more

I'm not sure if we came here on a bad day. Since they have so many good reviews. This place is not worth the hour drive. This place is not an actual "winery". They have apple wine, but good luck getting your hands on some. When we first got here we went straight to the apple wine line. We waited about 30 minutes in line then their like "oh we're all going on lunch break at the same time for 20 minutes or so". This is when they had a huge line of people waiting. So we waited for an hour for them to come back. Hour passed no apple wine. We then said screw this let's go pick some apples. The apples were good, we got large bag of Honey crisps for $40. The other types were really small apples so we just got the honey crisps. Went back to the "winery". They were finally back, waited in line for another 30 minutes. Finally get up there, we wanted to try one of everything since we waited all day and we didn't want to have to go back in that line. The lady marked our hands and said we were only allowed one tiny glass of wine. Definitely won't be back. read more

We decided on a day trip up to Apple Barn Orchard and Winery this afternoon. It's a neat little pick your own orchard out in the middle of nowhere. They sell you either a small or a large sack, you cross the street and start picking. Several different varieties were offered and the apple harvest was bountiful. Tons of apples to choose from. In a matter of 10 minutes, we had our large sack full and set off to explore other aspects of the orchard. Inside one building is a store with all sorts of different things -- jams, jellies, apple cider, pancake mixes, maple syrup, soup mixes, salsas, you name it. Toward the rear is a "winery" that offers free tastings. About the wine -- I am somewhat of a wine connoisseur and it is never a good idea to commence a wine tasting after having gorged on apple cider, apple donuts and apples from the field. With a sweet taste in my mouth, I commenced a tasting of all their wine offerings and couldn't find a single one I liked. Each and every one tasted like two buck chuck to me. Needless to say, I was very much looking forward to scoring a few good bottles, but was disappointed and left empty handed. I'm not going to entirely blame the wine for this one, because I started tasting with an improper palate. Perhaps the wines are indeed very good, but nothing really struck my fancy. On to other areas -- out front, another stand offered warm apple donuts, hot and cold cider, popcorn, caramel apples, etc. We sampled a few items and found all to be very good. The size of the donuts seemed to be smaller than what I have found at other orchards though. Pumpkins were aplenty and prices were very reasonable. $5 for a big ugly pumpkin with worts. Perfect. :) Toward the parking area, a gentleman was hawking his Watkins products and a very nice woman was offering her Tastefully Simple wares. Toward the center of the facility, some vendors were selling homemade crafts, yard ornaments, bird feeders and the like. Overall, a very nice afternoon was had by all. If we were in the area again, I'm sure we'd stop by. Not entirely sure we'd make the trek up there again though. There are orchards closer by that generally offer the same experience without the 90 minute drive. read more

We stopped by this quaint shop outside of Elkhorn after hearing they still had apples and made apple cider donuts. The donuts were perfectly made! And, they gave us samples of them along with the delicious hot apple cider. This is a very hospitable place that offers a variety of jams, mustards, butters, cider, donust, fruit wine, kitchen knick knacks, etc. I can't imagine you wouldnt find something to taste or buy there! We purchased 4 bags (1/2 bushel) labeled "Cortland" apples and were very disappointed to find each bag contained only a few Cortlands and the rest were MacIntosh. Cortlands are a crisp, tart apple with a hearty texture and a distinct tart flavor. All the small size apples in the bags were MacIntosh, a soft, mealy textured apple with an over the top sweet taste. MacIntosh are a far inferior apple to Cortlands because they turn to mush when cooked or baked. We would have returned the 1/2 bushel for a refund, but it was too far to drive back. We are disgusted by Apple Barn's dishonesty and cheating. We will not shop there again. read more

I have to give Apple Barn Orchard & Winery 5 stars because they have such a fun and friendly team there, and a beautiful you pick orchard. But the real reason, I was in a scramble to find the perfect proposal location because my plans were water logged by a nasty storm that blew through Illinois. After a quick 2 hour drive, I found myself walking down an apple orchard, with tons of people happy and excited with their children and families. Picking ripe, fresh beautiful apples. The orchard was very open and had row after row after row of beautiful apple trees. At the end of a row we found the perfect tree, with a perfect red and green Cartland Apple ripe for picking. I took that time to drop down on a knee and ask the love of my life to marry me! We stood around hugging, and sharing a magical moment and a member of the orchard cane up to us, and was so happy to hear we had been engaged and ask to take pictures of us! Then when we went to the complimentary wine tasting, the personnel asked when and where it had happened, and offered to take even more pictures of us. They then gave us a free glass of wine, and took us to take pictures at this amazing stone built smoke house, and then in front of their personal house where they had this beautiful vine growing up the house. They made our wonderful, amazing moment of our lives and made us feel even more welcomed and it hands down was a wonderful experience that we as a new couple will never forget. 10/10. I recommend to anyone looking for a fresh amazing apples or pumpkins, and a beautiful orchard to visit. Plus their wine was amazing! read more

Hands down, the BEST place to go apple picking. Located in Elkhorn, WI, this place is a good hour and a half or so from Chicago, but it is worth the drive. We always go during Apple Fest, and there is a ton for the kiddos to do - face painting, bouncy house, inflatable slide, apple picking, pumpkin patch, hay ride, helicopter ride, small corn maze, you name it! It can get a little crowded, but it' has never bothered me. There's also fun for the adults too. There are some local artists selling crafts, and of course, there's the fruit winery attached to the little store. They have 11 wines and let you taste 5 a piece. My husband and I shared and we each tasted 10 (the 11th one - pumpkin - wasn't available yet). It's certainly not the best wine ever, but it's fun to taste the fruit varietals. I think the bottles are around $10 a piece. We left with the Hardy Pear, Rhubarb, and Blackberry wines, though usually we head home with a solo bottle of Blueberry. I think a pretty tasty drink can be made by heating together the Pear and some mulling spices. The price of the bag ($12 for a half peck and $23 for a full peck) includes any hay rides out to the orchard, and picking the apples right off the trees. Their golden delicious apples were ripe for picking, and were deliciously sweet. Oh, also give their cider and apple donuts a try! Yum! I've been coming here since I was a kid with my parents, and now we take the little ones in our family. This is such a great place that I know we'll be returning for years to come. read more

What a cute little place and so friendly! We arrived a little after 4 pm on a weekday. Their wine tasting ended at 4 but they were kind enough to offer us a tasting. They were so kind and the tasting was free. Very delicious fruit wines. We purchased a bottle of blackberry wine. They even cut up one apple of each kind for us to sample for free. So nice of them!! Fell in love with this place a couple of years ago. We pick apples every year and usually get our pumpkins there too. The store can get really busy, especially during weekends in the fall, but fresh apple-cider donuts make up for the wait. I considered myself a wine snob, but over the years I've come to love most of their wines. The Honey Crisp Apple and the Pear are my favorites, but the Blackberry is great in the fall with a heavier meal. read more

A nice little family operation - pick your own apples, a little "country store", a tiny wine-tasting area, and fresh homemade cider donuts. Outside there is a little corn maze (or tree maze?) for kids, as well as an old firetruck for kids to climb on. It's out in the rolling farmlands, and, being on a hill, it has a nice vista of several miles of farm and woodlands. We tasted, liked, and bought the fruity apple wine, and we really like the donuts, which were still warm in the bags when we have bought them (twice!). We will, and have, gone back for the donuts! I would not drive all the way from Chicago for this place, but if you are in the Lake Geneva area, it is an excuse for a nice easy autumn drive in beautiful farm country. read more
