Yes, they have lion's mane, in all of its repugnant mushroom gloriousness. River Valley Ranch Mushroom Farm was started in 1976, by Bill Rose and his son, Eric. They continue to run the show today. The focus here at River Valley Ranch is on producing chemical-free mushrooms. They have multiple barns that serve as mushroom grow rooms, but they also produce a variety of other chemical-free vegetable crops. They sell their produce in their store and also local farmers markets. The store inside River Valley Ranch is like a dream come true for people who like to eat good, local food. You will find produce and goods that River Valley Ranch has grown and created on their farm, but also local Wisconsin products created elsewhere. Everything on the shelves feels like it was carefully considered before being placed there. There are also freshly baked loaves of bread baked in-house, wine and beer, Wisconsin cheese, many jars of pickled things, jellies and jams, and a kitchen where you can find meals and hot food. They have a great selection of different pickled and jarred fruits and vegetables and a decent selection of fresh vegetables that are homegrown. Also available is variety of farm produce as well as some organic brands you can find in most "healthy foods" stores like Amy's beans, flour, grains, etc. I bought tons of mushrooms and then made them with garlic and olive oil. They were incredible. Next day I had the tamales for lunch, now I'm regretting I didn't get more. This place is magical. Magical. Magic mushrooms (not that kind :/) and other produce, baked goods, gigantic bulbs of fresh garlic, jarred concoctions of artichokes, mushrooms and pickled things line the walls. Many of these jars are sold at local farmer's markets, but this farm is totally worth the trip to see where your food is coming from. Mushroom baguettes are freshly baked on the premises! Riiight out of the oven, these things are so delicious. This is about an hour drive from the city, but coupled with a trip to the Kenosha outlet mall and a trip to Woodman's for a New Glarus Beer run, this makes for an awesome autumn day off. read more

I thought River Valley Ranch was very intriguing looking as I passed by a few times. This past weekend, I was finally able to visit. This spot obviously has plenty of mushrooms to check out, but they also have all sorts of canned goods, frozen foods, fresh baked goods and even fun books and t-shirts. It's a small spot, but has lots of variety. The staff is really nice and was helpful when looking at items. It's not a one stop shop by any means, but if you want to try some produce, local goodies or unique items, definitely stop in here! If you are familiar with the Chicago Farmers' Markets scene, I'm sure you recognize River Valley - they show up to all the big markets with an array of jarred goods, as well as awesome mushrooms and other produce, and sometimes even prep hot food at their stand. Recently, they opened up a shop/cafe down the street from me in Ravenswood (former City Provisions location) but then imagine my ignorant city gal surprise when I realized hey - River Valley Ranch is a real place! And it's right near where we vacation every summer. I was excited to check it out and it was a fun little shopping trip. It was cool to see their farm and the store has even more of their awesome products than I had seen before, as well as lots of just-picked-that-day produce and mushrooms, as well as some quality Wisconsin meats and cheeses and gifts. Everything is really affordable and really delicious - an ideal stop if you are looking for a quality farm stand, which there are many in the area, but not all as good as this one. I highly reccommend the cheesy garlic spread or the garlic pickled mushrooms - sounds weird but they are an excellent bloody Mary garnish. You can thank me for that tip later read more

Mostly this agro-fungi-growing business caters to commercial restaurant kitchens (with two commercial kitchens of it's own in Lake Geneva and the city of Chicago areas), but it no longer extends these lower wholesale prices to the general public. Instead it has been canning relishes, salsas, bruschetta spreads, and pickled mushrooms at a rather high price-point (e.g., averaging $8+ per pint jar). While there is a typical restaurant menu in IL, the WI store sticks to soup/sandwiches, fresh produce, beer/wine, local farm meats (frozen), and a few cracker, chocolate, cheese, and tortilla chip selections. While it's Google search touts a "female-based" business, the owner, Eric, does not seem to profit share or put the women in any voting or executive positions, leaving them as either lower salary wage or hourly workers only, and presumably this extends to the mushroom farming job holders as well. As for the comments about the rudeness of female staff, this extends to only a select few ladies in positions presumably of management oversight, and who are probably just socially inept rather than purposefully rude. My experience is not atypical, so expect to pay a premium, don't expect to be treated like you are family, and consider that the mushrooms ARE THE BEST PART OF THIS BUSINESS. Soups and the mushroom-based chili, and/or "vegetarian" offerings could be the culinary standouts for those only seeking snacks or picnic fare, and the canned goods (homemade), are consistent in taste, quantity, and quality. This place is a true gem. River Valley Ranch Mushroom Farm is a great place to shop for locally produced produce and mushrooms. Their prices for mushrooms are pretty good, and they have a big selection, some of which isn't easily found in super markets. I appreciate the fact that they have a good selection of produce as well as a large amount of free samples. They sell soups which are produced on site, and are pretty good after a long drive up from Chicago. One of the more interesting things about this store is that they supply mushrooms to some of the finer restaurants in Chicago. We've gotten some awesome things from these guys in Evanston. Happening to be up by Lake Geneva anyway, we decided to stop in. Boy was it worth a visit! This place is awesome. Basically it's like it's own farmers market grocery store indoors. Everything was a little pricey, but equally awesome. Lots of portabella and porcini and other mushroom options about. The string cheese there is excellent, and they make some kind of scone that is very very good as well. Meanwhile, the mushrooms look as amazingly fresh as you would expect from a mushroom farm. If anyone can get some great mushrooms, it's them. Must visit again. read more

Back in my corporate days, when I was feeling the stress and under the gun, I used to joke about chucking it all and starting a mushroom farm in Wisconsin. Well, these folks actually did that in 1976, and they are still going strong. This is a great stop if you are in the Lake Geneva area or just tooling through the rustic roads of Wisconsin. They have lots of mushrooms, plus other produce, a good selection of specialty cheeses, delicious brats and an incredible selection of sauces and salsas and dips and cheese and herb mixtures for your own dip-making, the most famous being the five-cheese garlic dip. These are great things to get if you know you will use them soon for a party or gathering. Otherwise, they tend to get shoved to the back of the fridge where they morph into science experiments. Lot's of good pickled stuff, such as mushrooms, which of course last much longer. On my last trip there, I bought organic eggs, cheese, and a small box of tomatoes. I have to say I was a bit disappointed when the tomatoes, which were presumably garden "fresh" began to spot and rot in all of two days. It did make me wonder where they actually came from, since even my store-bought varieties last a good week. Perhaps it's best to stick with the frozen brats and pickled stuff and maybe the 'shrooms, if you want to guarantee freshness when paying the higher prices here. But this is a fun and unique Wisconsin offering. These folks also show up with some of their wares at the Lincoln Square Farmer's Markets, for those of you urban car-less types. read more

They sell fresh mushrooms, marinated mushroom, pickled mushroom, mushroom bratwurst sausages, fresh farm produce, etc etc. If you like to entertain and have dinner parties, you can totally stock up on stuff for appetizers. The store is cute and served samples to taste. You can also order a bratwurst sandwich or soup to eat there or to go. I have not been to many mushroom farms nor have I experienced any, this particular place was great, it had a lot of folks around and they were sampling different items. They have Tamales here which I thought was odd but, again, I've never been to a mushroom farm before so i passed judgement far too early. I don't know the going rate for mushrooms so i cannot say for certain if it's expensive or not but, folks didn't seem to mind to come out of pocket for what they were buying. read more

It is a nice store. However beware of over priced produce that is molded. And the staff there is extremely rude. I skip it just because I don't want to give them my money. A great little spot in Slades Corners about 8 miles east of lake geneva or Hwy 50. Lots of uber fresh fungi and reasonable prices. I was able to get the hard to find chanterelles there as well as morels and hens of the wood. thye carry a nice selection of pickled products, even dilly beans! Yum. they also have cheese and some baguettes. if you area fan of fungi, it a great place to stop. read more
