Chicken and dumpling soup, chicken salad sandwich on wheat, creamy tomato basil soup & cornbread.

We stopped here for lunch. It was well worth the stop. Good homemade food, friendly owners who truly enjoy people and serving the best food to their customers. Several soups are offered daily, I chose the chicken and dumpling and it did not disappoint. Also a chicken salad sandwich; chunky chicken with fresh celery, grapes, tomatoes & lettuce on bread of your choice. We spotted apple dumplings fresh outta the oven and decided to take one home with us. It was delicious, just like I remember from my childhood. Pie dough wrapped around a whole cored apple, stuffed with brown sugar and baked to perfection. That alone is enough to go back for more! Loads of charm, located in an antique shop. This will be our new stop from now on.

This tiny, unassuming restaurant located in downtown Mountain Home is run by a really nice couple and whips up delicious sandwiches and fantastic baked goods. After several recommendations I was ecstatic when the opportunity to stop by finally came. I ordered an Italian sandwich (lettuce, tomato, onion, banana peppers on toasted ciabatta, $6.99) and my husband got the "Special" (turkey, bacon, lettuce, Swiss cheese and house ranch, $6.99), to go. We also grabbed some goodies, an Old-Fashioned Baked Apple Dumpling (served warm with caramel sauce, $5.99) and Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Whoopie Pie. We both LOVED our sandos. They were both stuffed with delicious, fresh meats and veggies and the bread was perfectly toasted. They were decent sizes, not suitable for sharing though. And why would you want to share? They're too good. The desserts were astounding!!! The Whoopie Pie was extremely rich, highly recommend a side of milk. The cream cheese filling was light and fluffy. The cookies tasted fresh. The real winner was the Apple Dumpling. I kid you not, this thing is ginormous. It's so heavy! And total unexpected. It's not just any dumpling. This thing's got an entire peeled and cooked apple snuggled inside a moist, cinnamon pastry shell similar to pie crust. Drizzled with the caramel sauce, it is SOOOO GOOOOOD! It's a can't miss. Who cares about the calories, don't walk out without one of these bad boys. Overall, I will be back for more! Sorry for bad pics, sandwiches in cars are hard to eat let alone snap a shot of. Note: The owners are proud Christians. A lot of religious memorabilia throughout the shop. But please, don't be a judgmental prick. These are nice people. A business has the right to decorate their place as they want. If you don't like it, just go somewhere else. :)

The Belgian waffle, banana foster, and cinnamon apple pull-aparts were all tasty, and we had a nice chat with the owners while we waited for our order. We were a little hesitant to enter at first because the storefront and TV programming seemed ultra conservative, but the owners were very welcoming and the menu looked appealing. On top of that, we left with a framed, signed Mets jersey in addition to our breakfast! The decor actually comprises a large assortment of interesting items for sale. It's worth a visit to get a taste of small town Idaho.

While traveling from Boise to Sun Valley, my partner and I were in search of a packable lunch to enjoy inside Craters of the Moon National Monument. As expected, I pulled out my handy dandy Yelp app and happened upon Apple Barrel Deli & Bakery. I was initially sold by the name since I grew up on an apple orchard in the northern suburbs of Chicago. I have so many wonderful memories of apple picking, coring, bobbing, pie making and anything else that involves apples. Second, I'm always down for food made with carbohydrates--be is a sandwich or pastry. Who isn't?! Third, this was literally the last sign of civilization before hopping onto East 20/26 highway. To get to this establishment, you pass through the small "Main Street" downtown of Mountain Home. They had a cute farmer's market going on so we took a few side streets to get here. Although the market was only a block away, we still found parking right in front. Immediately upon entering I was put off a bit by a massive deer head with hunting propaganda, religious memorabilia, and "Newsmax" being played on the TV with QAnon conspiracies and right side politics. Yet, I told myself "when in small town Idaho..." and carried on. The owner himself greeted us at the counter. He was very friendly and welcoming, regardless of the fact that we are an openly gay couple. My rule is if they respect us, I'll happily respect them -- as all of society should. We ordered two Chicken Salad sandwiches specials, two tins of Pringle chips, and of course, an apple dumpling for later. We were given instructions on how to best warm up the apple dumpling and went on our way. After exploring the park and hiking, we were ready for lunch. Our sandwiches were nicely wrapped up and grilled. Napkins and even a miniature Snickers candy was inside the bag. Our chicken salad sandwiches were spectacular and hit the spot. Of course, once we popped, we couldn't stop eating them Pringles either. When we arrived to Sun Valley and warmed up the apple dumpling with the instructions provided on the bag. It was so comforting to enjoy with freshly sliced apples, brown sugar and a delicious crust. If you're in the area, we found Apple Barrel to be a wonderful option for breakfast or lunch.
