I work for a greenhouse/florist/garden center myself and I generally hate the process of choosing floral arrangements for long-distance gifts to loved ones, because I can get easily frustrated. Sheer happenstance is the reason Jamie W. and I found ourselves here last weekend. We were on the way to a memorial service in Pleasanton when I had suggested we get some flowers. It's the Japanese side of me, I can't help it, I need to bring something, especially when I don't even know who the dearly departed was. We were tooling around Oakland and expecting to stop by Lucky Florists near the MacArthur BART station. Alas, it was closed on an early Saturday afternoon. We kept going down Telegraph Avenue seeing all kinds of mortuaries, so we assumed we would find another florist. That's how we came upon Apple Blossom. While we weren't wildly impressed with their selection there, we told the resident florist our circumstance and looking to spend a set amount that was less than how much a more elaborate arrangement would have cost. I also thought in keeping with the somber tone of the event, we should stick with white and pale lavender flowers. With those directions, she pulled together a most attractive bouquet (see photo). I like the idea of supporting local businesses who are obviously plying their craftsmanship in neighborhoods that otherwise appear to be struggling economically.
