Apple Holler is always worth the trip. I make a yearly pilgrimage here with family to pick apples and to stock up on goods from their fabulous bakery. The staff is unfailingly helpful and welcoming, and they've expanded their range of activities over recent years. As for the orchard, we've always been able to pick apples there, no matter how late in the season we show up. The bag sizes they offer are actually sort of perfect -- you won't end up with rotting apples, but you'll have enough to last you a week or two after you get back. My all-time favorite at the bakery is their mini pumpkin pie. That said, even I (a longtime donut-hater) have to admit that their apple cider and pumpkin donuts are not to be missed. We've also tried their apple bread, which could use more apples but which disappeared quickly. If you live closer to the Holler or don't mind the commute from the Chicago area, they're open year-round and also have a restaurant next to the bakery, so be sure to stop by. read more

Apple Holler is a must visit during the fall here in Wisconsin! However, after apple picking once here a few years ago, I solely now just visit for the bakery and cider each year. Hit or miss on whether you get a friendly employee or not. The orchard is beautiful and there's lots of outdoor activities for little ones, but the price points are simply just way too high for apple picking and activities. If you're not worried about budget or crowds, this is a great place. Personally, I will stick to picking up some donuts and cider here every year and just apple picking elsewhere. read more

I really wanted to love it here and I have seen that it is a popular orchard and that they have Autumn Crisp apples, my fav. Unfortunately it was just too popular for us to enjoy. We came on a Sunday and granted that was our first mistake but the only day my husband had free. Parking was almost impossible to find, many parked on the street. We did end up finding parking and then did a double take at the line to get a picking bag. There was police present to help direct things. The line to get on the heyride to the orchard spanned very long. The lines for donuts and cider were just as long winded. It was just very crowded and hectic. Again it's a Sunday, maybe it's less crazy during the week but it was too packed and the lines were too long for us to really enjoy the experience wholeheartedly read more

LOW HANGING FRUIT If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, can I go ahead and cancel my HMO? Recently, I re-visited this quaint place with a small group of Yelpers/friends after a hiatus of several years. It was gorgeous on Saturday 10/13/18 and crowds were manageable when we arrived, though it got crazy busy around 1pm. Located in Sturtevant Wisconsin, about 15 minutes north of the Illinois state line, Apple Holler is a multi-function farm and expansive fruit orchard. They grow peaches, pears, and apples during the warmer months as well as a pumpkin patch once summer ends. In total, it sits on 78 acres of land. "The Holler" has been owned by the Flannery family who've kept the place running across generations. It's a little beat up in spots and could use a minor facelift (couldn't we all??) but being a teensy bit run-down is part of the charm. Things haven't changed much since I came here as a wee lad in the early 90's. Preferred parking is $5, and spots along the nearby frontage road can be tough to come by. My recommendation would be to get here EARLY on a weekend, otherwise the heavy post-church crowds will force you to park what feels like miles away! Ever since I could remember, good ol' fashioned Apple Holler was a surreal assault on all five senses: + the sounds of a rasta man playing Bob Marley hits in the little gazebo (he's there all the time on weekends) + the smells wafting through the air from the pig races, pony rides, and the Golden Goat Bridge (animal pun ftw) + the taste of warm cider donuts rolled in cinnamon sugar, hot Sheboygan brats with mustard, and freshly baked pies + the sights of families pulling their kids all bundled up in adorable red wagons through the orchard + the feel of a crimson, perfectly juicy Jonathan apple That said, I don't remember the orchard prices being as high as they were. A small bag (roughly 1/4 peck, or 3-4 lbs) cost $15 per person, which equates to about $5 per pound of apples! Sure they're *your* special apples, but damn, that's still seems like a lot. There's tons of activities for little ones, like a cow maze, giant slide, and a storybook path. The "corn palace" was a big hit with Nichole C, who rolled around with Ivonne M in a giant sandbox filled with dried corn kernels. My inner germaphobe died that day. We didn't eat in their cute restaurant that looks like a barn, but we spent plenty of money in the bakery. Apple Holler features plenty of market areas that sell pre-picked apples in addition to loads of other goodies. The old fashioned gift shop remains untouched by time; it's lovely. * TL;DR * This orchard near Kenosha is an annual fall pilgrimage for many families, and it's especially close to the hearts of those who've lived in the midwest. All in all, I've likely been to Apple Holler 20 times throughout my life, so yeah, you could say I'd be the Duke (retroactive to 1993). It's pretty touristy and a group of mom + dad + 2 kids could burn through $120 without much effort. Despite the cost and congestion on weekends, I can't think of a better way to spend an autumn day. After hearing about this place my whole life I finally decided to venture out. Unfortunately it was during Covid and all of the buildings were closed. But they had a little market outside and the menu was service for food items as well as their bakery. Peach picking was closed until the new crap is ripened. Tried the raspberry apple cider which was way too sweet for my liking and felt like I was drinking syrup. Got some cool sunglasses on their clearance rack and some fresh blueberry and strawberry jams to try. The server was nice, she was prompt with our drinks as well. In addition to what's listed, they have a chef carving corned beef. It was so tender and juicy, easily the best part of the meal. They also have an ala carte menu if you don't want the buffet. We did not see any alcoholic drinks on the menu nor did we ask but I did see one lady with a Bloody Mary and it was huge and looked delicious. The restaurant is connected to a small country store where we easily dropped another $50.00 each. Thet have fresh bakery and pies, frozen take and bake pies, apples sold by 1/2 peck, seasonal decorations, wine, jewelry. odds and ends gifts, there was even a table where an author was signing a children's Christmas book that he had written. There was a Santa Claus event for children this morning and after it was over, Santa made his rounds through the restaurant wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. I visited Apple holler today and enjoyed one of the best breakfast I've had in as long as I can remember but even before that I was immediately impressed just upon entering the parking lot with all of the decorations outside and a beautiful patio surrounded by a small garden with gorgeous Flowers and bird's nests which were heavily occupied. Upon entering the building you'll immediately notice the bakery section full of homemade pies, Apple butter, cakes, muffins, fudge, and specialty breads like apple pie and strawberry which will leave you stuck in your tracks along with other homemade candies in addition to homemade cider, hard cider, and even cider slushies!!! Apple Holler also offers many items for sale aside from food including antique style decor and many options to decorate your garden. Make sure to take advantage of the walking tours of their orchard, a play area, for kids plus different events throughout the seasons and plenty of options and activities for the family to enjoy but I think the real star of the show is their food which is so much better than anything I've had in a very long time. This place is a SHAM! Was told that I had to pay 12$ for my 1 year old that can barely walk. I asked what the charge was for and I was told that it was for the kids play area and goats. I again explained to the staff that my child isn't able to use any of what came with the charge and STILL WAS TOLD TO PAY! The staff was rude and treated myself and other customers with disrespect as if we were inconveniencing them. You pay 25$ for a bag that fits about 5 apples for each person. We make it a point to stop here whenever we are in Wisconsin. The hostess is always kind and welcoming. The waitresses are personable and efficient. The food is prepared to perfection. This time around I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy. Both were tasty. The Bloody Mary wasn't too spicy and the drink with the Tennessee honey whiskey was refreshing. Definitely take the time to shop their shop too! read more

I have driven past this place for ever and I have never stopped because I thought it was like a kids kind of a thing and I never looked into it so when I saw the booth at the Wast Allis Farmers market I stopped and checked them out. Oh man did they have some good looking pies, breads jams etc so since I'm trying to be more rounded on Yelp and add sweet tooth places that I have neglected for ever, I'm going to get a pie. Luckily it was not a full size pie or I would have not have picked one up, it was like a mini pie which I could handle. Right away the strawberry rhubarb pie just looked fantastic and since I tried one many moons ago and remember liking what ever the hell a rhubarb is, I'm getting one. The strawberry rhubarb pie was really good and I can't decide if I liked the crust better than the filling, this crust is really good. This was such a perfect balance of crust vs filling and it's was not the super sweet hurt your teeth kind of a treat. This might be my first pie review because I just don't order pie but I must say, I'm a fan of really good pie and OMG what I was missing out on. We were told to get a menu and sit down. When we were seated we were o select our food and then get back into line to order. We could not find a menu and didn't get to the point of finding a table. It looked like they had a great market, but since we couldn't find a menu or a seat we left. It was a nice walk and the animals and village were great for my granddaughter. We left to eat somewhere that would give us a seat and menu. I would have spent more money at the store and restaurant. The procedures to sit need to be more readily understood. read more

I've been looking forward to trying this place and recently had an opportunity to do so on my way back from a business trip to Chicago. To start with the service was friendly and fantastic. I took my servers recommendation on what to order and what to avoid. I started out with a plain hot spiced apple cider. It was good but way too sweet for my taste. I started out with a bowl of French onion soup. It was delicious and made the way FO should be - large crotons and topped in bubbly mozzarella. The only drawback is that it's a meal unto itself. For a main I had the pulled pork sandwich with onion strings. The strings were fantastic and the pork was outstanding. If I'd have had an ounce of too. I would have tried a dessert or taken one with. Been to quite a few apple orchards in Illinois and glad we found Apple Holler. From the north suburbs of Chicago its only 40-45 minute drive and it is conveniently located right off of 94. This is orchard is great for families, especially with little kids and is a great value. Most places charge you for picking apples and then a separate admission charge for their kids/activities areas. Here the apple picking charge gives you admission to the kids activities area which has a corn maize, a smaller sized kids maize, a playground, pedal karts, big tube slide and other activities. They also include a free pony ride ticket for anyone under 10 which is a nice bonus as well. I would suggest going earlier as it does get crowded once the afternoon rolls around. If you do go apple picking make sure to keep your receipt with you as they check for a receipt before you enter the orchard as well as once you leave, so make sure to keep it. The staff throughout the property were extremely friendly and warm. From the greeters, to the sales booth, to those operating the bakery they were fantastic. I really appreciated that they were extremely professional and kind in asking a guest who was unmasked if they would kindly put on a mask and even provided masks as well. The orchard was well organized and the apples were plentiful. A tractor pulling different colored train type carts would take you half a mile or so to an area or you could walk if you preferred. After picking our apples we played at the kids area doing the kids maize, playground, big slide, the pony ride and fed some goats. Though the kids area was not as big and didn't have as many activities as some other orchards do, there was still plenty to do and the kids had a great time. Of course when you go to an Orchard besides their apples, trying their baked goods is a must. The apple cider donuts here were good. They had a nice apple/cinnamon flavor and were fluffy. They have an apple cider slushes that is purely apple with no sugar added, which is a huge plus as the kids loved them as they were sweet from just the apples and weren't bouncing off the walls. The apple cider was so refreshing on a hot day and was just as you imagine cider to be. We also tried the caramel apple pie which was good. It was filled with apples and had a crumble on top without being overloaded with caramel sauce. There was enough caramel to add some sweetness but not too much that it overpowered the taste of apple. The crust was a little lacking as it was very thin on the bottom. The topping had quite a bit of oatmeal which overall made it taste and gave it a texture more like an apple crisp than a pie but overall it was still good. I especially recommend this place if you have families with younger children as its a great time and value for any weekend. read more

This quaint little place is like a Cracker Barrel but real life. The first thing you'll notice is hundreds of scarecrow people scattered around the property and all over the benches. A little creepy so stick to daylight hours. It's a one stop country store of local treats, a little bakery counter, ice cream, and petting zoo. I ordered a cauliflower soup for my toddler. I was feeding it to him but hadn't tasted it first. When I tasted it, I felt bad feeding it to him. It was SO salty. I wouldn't give him any more. I had the fried chicken. It was juicy and perfectly fried. However the gravy was, again, incredibly salty. You have to pay to visit the farm attraction part, and I'm not sure why anyone would want to but if the kids need to stretch their legs, it's an option. I was able to see the little goats from the side of the yard and they were hilarious, especially the one that goes up over the bridge. It was certainly a good taste of local flavor and I'm glad I stopped, but I don't think I'd need to ever again. read more

This was disappointing at best. I can understand the weekend crowds during peak season, but the organization and crowd management left something to be desired. Then the hefty a la carte prices, commencing with $5 just to park, were annoying and off-putting. This is an orchard in Wisconsin, not the Chicago loop. Why wouldn't you have adequate customer parking? There is ample land for sure. There was an itemized charge for everything. $20 for adults to pick apples when the trees were almost bare. And then the restroom, the only one at the back of the restaurant. Strewn with toilet paper, semi-flooded with non-functional paper towel dispensers. Management could surely attempt to improve operations. There were employees around, but they simply hanging around lacking motivation to help. read more

The only good things about this place are the convenience of getting there and the fact that it's a huge property besides that they aren't worth the trip. A few things that lead me to give such a poor rating was; 1. They are expensive!!! 2. They advertise things on their website that aren't working or being operated when you go like the ponies and a few other kids attractions that weren't being run during our visit. 3. It seemed a little run down and dirty 4. The restrooms ( port a John's) were dirty and almost filled to the top. On 10/14 I decided to go to Apple Holler with my boyfriend, Eric S, and two friends. Eric had mentioned this place plenty of times, letting me know that it was a family tradition to visit every Fall, when he was a kid. I was not disappointed! We got there early and didn't have to wait very long in line. We each bought a $15 bag to fill with apples and went on in. We took a SLOW tractor ride out to the orchards and spent a while walking around, tasting, and picking the best apples. It was beautiful out there! After coming back to the entrance we saw the goats, made corn angels in the corn pit, and bought some yummy goodies before heading back home. I bought a loaf of cheese bread that had a huge hole from one end to the other making it impossible to slice. I only got two end slices without a hole. I had to cut the rest in chunks. Absolutely ridiculous. So I sent them a message with the pictures you see here and asked for a replacement, not my money back, just a replacement. Instead, I was told it's "completely normal" and no mention of replacing. No, a hole that large should never be accepted as "completely normal"; it shows production issues which they are completely ignoring. They obviously don't care about their products, just taking your money. Makes me wonder about the quality of their other food. Despite the hole, was the bread good? Actually no, the cheese around the hole was tough and very chewy, and the end pieces were just plain bread, so the majority was tossed. Instead of doing the right thing and replacing that loaf like I asked, they lost customers. I'm sure they don't care about that either. read more

This is a little place that's not too far from the WI border so the location can't be beat. Its cute but not that large and is just pretty OK. My visit was in August of 2018, late to finish my draft.... If you are coming with small children, be prepared to do diaper changes in your car or on a blanket on the grass - there's only one bathroom (in the back of the restaurant) and the changing table in the bathroom is tiny and very wobbly. There are also no nursing facilities that I saw. You also can not bring your stroller into the restaurant or shop and it's not handicap accessible. Having to leave my stroller outside the restaurant was a huge irritant to me since it had all the things we need to keep a toddler entertained though lunch. For a place that is geared to families, it think it's a huge drawback. I understand that the space is cramped but you should accomodate your guests in wheelchairs at the very least. The restaurant itself had pretty heavy offerings (see picture) for lunch time so I opted for the soup/salad. I think the menu changes based on season/days. The soup of the day when we visited was chicken noodle, onion or tomato. The chicken noodle soup was actually incredibly great but the salad bar was pretty disappointing. Fountain drinks were also $3 each, which I thought was pretty steep. On to what we came for - animals and fun for kids! There were goats and a cute little bucket conveyor system to feed the goats on top of the bridge. My toddler loved that. There were also chickens and various farmyard birds, horses and ponies (halflingers really). We purchased a couple pony rides for my son and he seemed to enjoy it, though the horses did not. One of the horses started playing up so my son had to ride another - which is fine, we can't control animals, right? (and I grapple with the morality of exhibiting animals/riding them etc.) Maybe they need to leave the horses with not so even tempers out of the pony ride.... There was a small corn maze that I didn't go in but my husband and son did - they seemed to like it. Several play areas and a very very very small corn pool kept my son entertained for a bit but the play houses and play train seemed to be a bit run down - but i get it, it's a farm. There's also a slide that is nice for younger kids because it's not too tall and it's pretty slow - you go down on a piece of burlap. We didn't have much interaction with staff but the ones we did talk to (purchase tickets, restaurant, etc.) didn't seem that happy to be there, as other reviews suggested.
