How are they out of most things on Fri at 1 PM? You know that school is out, and many people are travelling, you have to be better prepared. No beef pies, no mac and cheese, last grilled cheese sandwich? And the best part is, we ordered the mac and cheese, paid for it, sat down and then a worker comes (don't think she was a student) and says, "We are out of mac and cheese" and just stands there, without offering to either process a refund, or offer us an alternative, until my friend literally asked her, "So what are you planning to do about it because we paid for it already?" and only then did she start offering us alternatives. No sweets left either. We wanted a chocolate croissant, none was left. We returned to this place because we had a great experience last year and I brought friends, who have never been to CIA, and I was raving about it and so wanted them to enjoy it. I knew the food was going to be good but I didn't expect it to be GREAT! Located at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) this is not an easy place to get to for NYC city dwellers. It's a drive. Like rent a zip car and spend the day in the country side kind of drive. The whole cafe operation both FOH and BOH is student run. This is their last leg in the culinary program and they greet you, serve you and cook for you. Totally awesome so don't forget to throw a few bucks in the tip pot up front. I had a huge day of eating ahead of me so I wanted to eat on the lighter side for lunch. The Pork Belly on top of grits with a fried egg and other goodness sounded divine (it was as my friend ordered it and I of course had to snag a few bites) but I settled on the Soup which happened to be a Spicy Black Bean, a cornbread muffin and Bulgur Wheat Salad. Black Bean Soup: BEST black bean soup I have ever had. It was phenomenal. Hearty, spicy and the chunks of chorizo were a great surprise. I guess this is a signature item of the Cafe and believe you me they have nailed it. It has ruined all other black bean soups for me and now writing this review has me craving it. On the side it was served with a perfect brioche dinner roll. Heavenly but I had to save my carbs for the Cornbread Muffin. Eat it as is. No butter. No honey. It is so refreshing to be able to eat a baked good as it. Love. Bulgur Wheat Salad: I love pepper. Put it on everything whether it is needed or not. At first "au natural" bite I was blown away on how this simple blend of bulgur wheat, bell peppers, cucumbers and red onions was perfectly seasoned. Like perfectly seasoned. Just the right amount of salt. The right amount of a light vinaigrette. No extra pepper was needed. This was great on a chill November day and would be my salad of choice especially during the summer months. Since I "ate light" for my meal it was time to splurge on dessert. Macarons galore! Classic flavor and creative ones lined the case. I went for the Spiced Butternut Squash and the Goat Cheese Apricot. The texture of the macarons were the best I've had thus far (sorry 'Lette). The flavors were mind blowing. Goat Cheese Apricot, life changing. Still on our Panna Cotta kick, the Maple Panna Cotta was calling our name with its stunning presentation for a dessert that was sitting behind a display case. The texture was perfect and the flavor was subtle but the oat-mealy crumble bits on top were not my fave and made this just ok for me. Plus it didn't really stand a chance after the Goat Cheese Apricot Macaron. Last but not least, yes Craig R. I am making you wait til the end of my long ass review to read about the Pumpkin Square. I had no clue what this spongy dusted pink box on a bed of "grass" held until first bite. I honestly do not know what it was or really how to describe it. The pumpkin flavor was spot on. The cake itself was hardly a cake. To me it had the textures of pudding/mousse mixed with tres leches. There were these crunchy bits in it that were a wonderful textural surprise. the "grassy" bed it sat on was the softest whipped cream. Visually stunning and just as tasty. Service was also wonderful. Even though everyone working is pretty much BOH focused I felt they did a super job working FOH. Most Chefs could give a crap about FOH but a great Chef has presence in both. The Apple Pie Bakery & Cafe was a great addition to the Culinary Institute's other restaurants. I only live 5 minutes away, and each time I visit, I kick myself for not coming here more often. A little history: Until the mid-1980s, there was a diner on campus. It was primarily for the students, but it was also open to the public. You could get a full meal here (appetizer, entree, beverage, dessert) for a very reasonable price. I was sorry to see it go when they expanded, but the Apple Pie Bakery & Cafe was a smart move on their part. The order-at-the-counter, eat-at-the-table ambiance allows you to enjoy your meal for as long as you like. There are plenty of regular items and daily specials to tempt you, as well as a decadent pastry display, and packaged spices, teas, etc. Hopefully everyone in your group can find something appealing in the variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, and beverages they serve. A couple of tips for less frequent visitors: 1. If you're going for lunch, the earlier you can get there the better when the weather is very nice. 2. On Friday afternoons, they stop restocking after lunch, so when they run out of something, you're out of luck. Expect some selections to be unavailable on Friday afternoons. read more

This bakery has, hands down, the best American/ French style baked goods I've had in America. I've never tasted such light airy cake with such flavor. I'm a brownies fanatic. This is by FAR the best brownie I've ever had in life. The soups are lovely as well, as are the seasonal jams that they sell that they make on campus. All of the ingredients taste very fresh, and that makes all the difference. The technique is second to none. The trailblazer cookies are the best. They have coconut in them. Oh the CIA Apple Pie Bakery. Aka heaven. Not only am I obsessed with visiting there (partly because I could not afford to go there fo college). It's absolutely beautiful. It's located in the main building on campus.. you cannot miss it. Enter in through the stained glass wooden doors and veer to your right and bam, you're there. The very cool thing about this bakery is that the students run it. The actual students going there work at this cafe and get graded on their work. It's neat. The place inside is BEAUTIFUL. They have an assortment of desserts and entrees that are made with high quality ingredients and made with love. It's more than just food it's a work of art. Here are a few items I recommend: -The Mac and Cheese: it's baked in ceramic ware and served in such a pretty way! (check out my photo on here). It's that creamy, silky, bubbly gruyere cheese that tops it off. And with crispy panko breadcrumbs. Yes. -The fries: simple and classic. You'd think... hey how can they make it better? Well somehow they do. It's perfectly crisp and cooked to perfection. -Turkey Cucumber Sandwich: Fresh ingredients and the good balance of turkey and crisp fresh cucumber. Lunch at the Apple Pie Bakery always holds such great promise, but in the end it has consistently left us with mixed feelings. The sandwich and soup options are simple but always sound good, especially with a side of truffle fries. When it arrives, it's always kind of disappointingly plainer than expected: the bread is really standard (not bad, but not great), the filling is reasonably tasty but nothing incredibly stand-out. Grilled cheese with decent but not earth-shattering cheese, reuben with modest meat and way too much horseradish. For the price (sandwiches ~ $10), I end up feeling sort of ripped off as we console ourselves with fries. The salad is particularly egregious in this respect-- $9.50 for a niçoise salad with like 4 leafs of lettuce, two tiny pickles, 6 olives, and a big heap of canned tuna? The pastries, on the other hand, are very good, and some of the savory baked goods look great (e.g., onion bialy). I'd recommend going early enough to get the quiche of the day and some specials (e.g., patê), or get soup and fries or some a la carte baked items, and avoid the overpriced sandwiches and salads. Or, go for a coffee and pastries and fill up on sweets :) I'd give 3.5 stars if possible-- I think the food is reasonably good, but doesn't live up to the location, the hype, and the price. read more

We arrived for lunch. Six of us meeting family from far away. We had high expectations. I mean this is the Culinary Institute of America. The menu was surprisingly limited. We arrived at 11:30 and they were out of many items even though they only opened at 11 am. The service... eyes rolling in the back of my head, was disappointing. The server couldn't answer most of our questions. Came back many times to tell us they were out of the items we ordered. And orders arrived 10 minutes apart. (no... we didn't order appetizers) Each order arrived at a different time and in pieces and not to the right person. You'd think that get one out of six correct. No apologies ever offered. ORDERS: BTT - Bacon, Turkey, Tomato was below average and the bread was nasty. The turkey and the bacon were decent. Caeser Salad listed breadcrumbs as an ingredient and not chicken.​ It arrived with a ton of chicken salad on top but no breadcrumbs​​. We were told later that the menu had errors. We ordered mushroom soup but it was never served. The chicken​ salad was ordinary. We ordered three desserts. Apple Pie, Milk & Cookies, and Operetta Cake. The Operetta Cake looked like a Tide Pod, shiny even... taste was not extraordinary. The Milk & Cookies was the size of a pool ball. It was blue tinted chocolate, filled with Chantilly cream claiming to be sitting on a brownie. The brownie was actually ~5 little cubes (smaller than sugar cubes) and two little cookie monster eyeballs. The "Apple Pie Bakery Cafe" uses canned apples in their apple pie... really? It was horrid. This bakery café at the NY campus of the Culinary is a true treat! I have yet to eat something there that was sub-par. All the deserts are done to perfection. They have a great selection but be sure to arrive early to have your pick ; their desserts tend to sell fast. They also have a variety of 'different' desserts such as peanut butter and caramel donut, an orange eclair, or a daikon sandwich . It can be a strange combination but yet very delicious. The café is under renovation at the moment, so they have a small selection for now. But by 2018, they should re-open with a new decor. I cannot wait to see it. Wow...if you read my reviews of the Culinary Institute's Italian and American restaurants, you will see that this 1 star rating is quite a shock. I can't believe I am giving it one star!!! Food: we came here after our meal at the Ristorante Caterina de' Medici. We were too stuffed after the meal to eat dessert, so we walked around and then came to the Apple Pie Bakery. We ordered a chocolate chunk cookie, a lemon/blueberry donut, a cappuccino and a cup of tea. Cost: $11.90. I've definitely had better chocolate chip cookies...it wasn't bad, it is just I expected way more. I took one bite of my boyfriend's lemon/blueberry donut and left the rest...it was literally tasteless. He loved the coffee and the tea was OK. Service: You wait on line (a very long line...we waited for about 25-30 minutes), place your order, find a table and then they bring the food to your table. It was extremely busy and noisy. We sat at the table for no more than maybe 8 minutes (how long does it take to eat a cookie, a donut and sip some tea and coffee?)...in those 8 minutes, they came over no less than 3 times to ask if they could clear stuff away. I understand the place was crowded and they wanted quick turnover but they could have cleared what we had on our table away in one trip when we were done. Going to the Apple Pie Bakery Cafe was an experience I'd gladly repeat. I was at the CIA visiting a student in the pasty program who recommended a visit to Apple Pie. First impression: the Cafe was lovely. It's a very well designed and decorated space - I had very positive vibes going in here, and would go back for the pleasure of the room alone. That being said, the pleasure can only increase when you approach the desserts in the glass cases as you consider what to order. I came late in the day on a graduation day, so the shop had been busy and the supplies were somewhat depleted, but what they had was gorgeous. Being somewhat familiar with their prep, from conversations with the pastry student I was visiting, I can comfortably say that they're all extremely tasty and well-worth eating. As it's a shop with student product, you have an opportunity to sample the best of the best - food turned out by students attending the country's most renowned culinary school, each trying for a perfect grade. I'd definitely recommend going early in the day, if you happen to be there on a graduation day, for the best selection. Anytime you're at the CIA, though, it's well worth a trip to the Apple Pie Bakery for a drink and a snack. We had a trip planned to Poughkeepsie, and we immediately thought of stopping at the CIA. Turns out, the other restaurants all stop serving lunch fairly early (1pm) but the Apple Pie Bakery is open until 5 and doesn't require reservations. Bingo. When we arrived- around 1:30- there was a line of maybe fifteen or so people outside of Apple Pie (the fire safety code requires them to limit the number of folks inside), but it moves efficiently enough. Once you place your order, you sit down with your number and await delivery of your food. It's hard to explain how magical sandwiches can be - but everything we had here was delicious. An avocado, goat cheese, and watercress sandwich on a warmed multi-grain bread served with perfectly crispy french fries was pure bliss. The daily quiche was served with a "simple salad" that was complicated enough not to be boring but simple enough to be refreshing. And please don't forget the baked goods which are, arguably, the star of the show. The cookies, oh, the cookies. As big as your head and tastier than almost any cookie I've ever had. read more

All of the food at this bakery is produced by students of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). This is a pleasant cafe which is perfect for a quick snack. My wife and I dropped by to sample their baked goods and sweet treats. There was a short line to get into the cafe and we were able to chat with the hostess who gave us some recommendations. Their macaroons are supposedly top notch but unfortunately we didn't get any. I had a pomegranate lychee granita which is a semi-frozen dessert (think slushee). It was good but a bit too sweet for my palate. My wife had this coconut, tapioca, pineapple concoction which was served in a glass jar. It was very unique and pretty tasty. I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the cafe, it's chill and relaxing. I noticed a few students studying in the cafe while munching. Cheap and amazing food all while at the CIA? Who can say no? I'd planned my day very carefully with the goal of ending up at the Apple Pie Bakery and Cafe for lunch. I was even more impressed and excited than I'd even anticipated. It was easy to find and the parking was plentiful. But the crowning achievement was really the food and the gift shop... Everything that I ordered from ice cream, salad, and sandwich was expertly prepared and beyond delicious. The gift shop was filled with beautiful salts, chocolates, pots, pans, accessories, books, and aprons; everything that you can imagine a chef or at home cook would need. Even though I live so close to it, I had never been to the CIA's campus until this past spring, when I met a friend for lunch at the Apple Pie Bakery. First off, the grounds of the campus are straight opulent - I was late to lunch because I spent a few extra minutes driving around so I could take it all in (sorry, friend!). The Bakery, like all of the CIA's eateries, is student-run and they were all very polite and polished looking. Like others have said, definitely make sure to get there early or try to avoid peak hours. We were seated and finishing our food around noon, when a flood of students packed the place for lunch. For my meal, I got a fruit tart of some sort, a crab cake and a glass of chardonnay. I'm normally not huge on tarts and fruit-based desserts, but I figured, "Hey, I'm at the Culinary Institute, if anyone's gonna make a fruit tart that I like, it should be them, right?" Right. It was delicious and moist and fresh and I really should have bought more and brought them home (luckily, I live about 7 minutes away). The Dungeness Crab Cake, though, was amazing. They obviously used high quality ingredients and they didn't skimp on the meat, which I find is often the case with crab cakes. The plating was also very lovely. It was just a singular crab cake, surrounded by a light garnish of greens. The APB format has inspired several local restaurants ran by grads who took the counter order / number card delivery system with them... This place just keeps developing. I remember when I went to school here several years ago and the business level was moderate. Now it's always packed in around lunchtime. Pretty cool to see how well it's been expanded. Most recently, we had a slightly enormous lunch here consisting of a stuffed pretzel, flank steak, truffled grilled cheese and two desserts, the Opera Pop and a chocolate ganache and salted caramel tart. Barely finished it all. Of note: the pretzel was awesome with a Santa Fe bite, the truffled sammie came with fried kale which tasted great with lemon (but not as good burping three hours later- the taste will haunt you), the steak was great, cooked properly, and served on a plate that was maybe three times bigger than necessary. And the desserts, of course, were perfect. A bit on the crazy rich side, but no complaints at all. And, to note to the person who was aghast at having desserts served immediately, before you go blaming a learning process, please remember that you're at a cafe and ordering everything all at once. You get it as it's ready to come out. If you want a seated experience with individual paced courses, I'd suggest going to the American Bounty or ordering each course at the time you want it. The Culinary Institute of America's only bakery... Among the CIA's four restaurants APB holds the unique title of being the only bakery. While some may think why only one? However there is only need for one as each restaurants, serves a specific cuisine with a specific theme, American, Italian, and French which all work brilliantly on their own, showcasing that specific region. It would simply be pointless to have more than one bakery when one can handle and serve everything needed. APB is many a things, one of only two restaurants open on Monday, the first restaurant open for service, and almost always busy. APB attracts students, tourists, and a variety of other customers this in combination with early hours, to-go option, and the fact that like all CIA restaurants every three weeks there are new students and therefore a learning curve one can almost guarantee a wait. So if one plans on dining at APB don't be surprised when the line begins reach Bocuse. Depending on how busy they are and the efficiency of the students Nonetheless once one reaches the register it is of course time to order. Like many other restaurants with lines one should have looked over the menu by now and now what they are ordering. Please, I cannot stress this enough do not be the one person who gets to the front of the line and stands there delaying everyone else because they don't know what to order. Also I do not understand what goes through some people's minds as they can't quiet comprehend the system in place it's not that hard. It goes like this, 1. Order 2 Take number 3. Anyway when it comes to what to order there are more than few option whether or not one decides to sit on or order to-go Basically the menu items fall into one of four categories, baked goods, pastries/desserts, appetizers/entrees and drinks. Although APB's menu changes regularly there a few items that have remained and for good reason. Even though most of APB's menu can be ordered to go certain items hold up better than others. For example any of the bagels or the bialy are almost always available and can be toasted by request. In addition the ham a cheese Danish, or pan au choclat (which are basically just croissants) are great as well. Some of the most popular items for dining in that have stayed on APB' menu is the macaroni and cheese. Forget everything you knew about macaroni and cheese, none of that Kraft junk this is what macaroni and cheese should be. Tiny little tubetti pasta, coated in a rich mornay sauce and topped with a proper breadcrumb crust. In addition to the macaroni APB offers items like various sandwiches, soups and daily specials, most of which are on a rotating schedule but do change with the seasons. As for the sandwiches and soups the grilled chicken sandwich was fantastic crispy bread remoulade, grilled chicken, and the right amount of greens. Most sandwiches have the choice of a side one of which is the truffle Parmesan fries, although they weren't the best I couldn't help p coming back for more. As the soups change daily it's hard to pick a favorite but the potato leek, and split pea while delicious were a lot of soup and not much stuff. Then of course there is the sweet side of things. With a name like Apple Pie Bakery Café you have to deliver. While apple pie can definitely be a personal preference sort of thing the apple pie here is pretty good especially if one asks them to warm the slice up. APB has also jumped on the macaron train, and while the macorns are pretty good not all of the flavors are. Stick with classics like red velvet, or salted caramel, or something that contrast such as passion fruit and dark chocolate. Aside from the food APB is just a great quick place anytime. Despite being rather loud for a café it still great for a relaxing comforting bite. Plus the addition of the always friendly staff one really can't go wrong here. The ambiance is lovely with a nice informal setting. The cafe is incredibly designed and the staff were very friendly. No need for a reservation and food is relatively inexpensive. I would definitely recommend a visit .A great place for lunch or early quick dinner snack and excellent soups. My friend and I shared a maple brioche doughnut, a brioche sticky bun, and a filled pretzel. The doughnut was amazing. The bun was very good, but the doughnut was better. The filled pretzel was delicious--a crusty bread surrounding a filling of cheese, mushrooms, and asparagus. Absolutely splended. Oh, we have been so excited to visit the Culinary Institute of America and have lunch prepared by the students. And we were not disappointed. We were in the area visiting FDR's home and the CIA is just down the road from it. I had the oven roasted turkey sandwich with Gruyere cheese, cucumbers, and chipotle mayo on a brioche bun. All for $7.95. Delicious! I had to try a peanut butter and jelly macaroon with purple icing. Very tasty. The entire glass serving case had rows and rows of delicious desserts in all shapes and flavors. My friend had the white bean soup with a fresh roll and the Lo Mein Salad with edammame, scallions, snow peas, red peppers, roasted peanuts, bean spouts, shiitake mushrooms, and cilantro dressed in peanut oil vinaigrette served with a lime wedge. This combination provided a complex mixture of flavors that worked very well. The cafe was served by the high energy, hard-working students in their cooking uniforms. No lazy lima beans working here! When we finished the meal we walked the halls and watched the students bake and prepare food through the glass viewing windows. Photo taking is OK just no flash. Everyone was wearing a chef's hat, checkered pants, and a white tunic. Afterwards we walked around this beautiful compus on the Hudson River. If you're in the area or just love to cook, come visit the CIA and eat a wonderful meal prepared by these students. It'll be a highlight of your trip. read more

Needless to say the food is gourmet without being pretentious. Everything is perfectly prepared and looks beautiful as well. The cafe is only open weekends for breakfast and lunch but it is worth the trip. There are many items that can be taken home but I recommend the apple pie which is the best I've ever eaten .
