We went to BJ Stevens on June 20, 2020 to purchase a new bed. We had been there a couple times…read moreprior and spoke with Barry Stevens and promised him our business when we were ready. We always try to support local. On June 20, 2020 we arrived and there was only one salesperson working and no other office staff, etc in the building. We asked if he was the only person available or if Barry was there. Baron, the salesman said Barry had been out for months due to the Covid-19 pandemic because he has COPD. We looked at beds, bedroom furniture sets and loveseats with Baron. We discussed many different beds and finally decided on one and also a head/foot board. We also looked at color swatches for the loveseat and told him we would decide later and come back as there was another couple waiting and we were undecided. We made sure that the price was the same even if we chose a different color swatch and discussed how we would NEVER purchase used furniture. When our bed set was delivered we had them take our old mattress away as we have always been used to doing. Once we got the bed frame fully assembled we unwrapped the box springs and put it on the frame then began to unwrap the mattress. It was then that we discovered that the protective plastic cover had already been opened and taped back shut. We were not happy but once we began to pull it down we were horrified to find a dirty edge with indentations in the mattress side. We barely pulled the plastic down and could easily see this. I have attached photos. We drove to the store immediately which is only about ten minutes away from our home. The sales person Baron had been one of the men that delivered the mattress to our home and was still out on deliveries. The lady that we spoke with called Baron and the owner and said she was not sure why we were delivered a used, floor model but that they would get it picked up the next morning, deliver the four pillows that they did not deliver initially and let us know when our bed would be in as she could not find the order in the computer. We asked if it had already been ordered and was told yes but she could not get in the computer to see when it would arrive but that Baron would when he was back in the store and they would let us know when they picked up their floor model the next morning. We were okay with that and left expecting that to happen. The next morning instead of coming to pick up their floor model we were called by Bryan Stevens who identified himself to us as "the fucking owner" twice and told us he was cussing us because his salesman told him we cussed him when he called to reschedule the original delivery day from Tuesday to Wednesday. That is an utter lie and we told him that. We also said that did not justify his behavior and that we were never told that we would be getting a used, floor model and he said we were knew and there was a sign posted clearly saying "one and only". We never saw that sign and even if there was one, they set these up as bedroom sets with all types of tags for the furniture etc. and we would not have known what that was referring to. We told him we were never asked about buying a used bed and we did not even think that was legal. At that point he hung up. We called the police who went and picked up two of the four pillows we were supposed to get and a ban order from BJ Stevens. We have filed a complaint with the Dept of Ag and Consumer Services and NC Consumer Complaints. We contacted Sealy and they phoned them and that ended in the same result. They told the Sealy Rep that their sales person told us we were buying a used, floor model bed which is another lie but they admitted to her that they did NOT tell us the warranty is also forfeited and void on a floor model bed because THEY DID NOT KNOW that themselves. The Sealy Rep is the one that told us there is no warranty as well. Apparently they do not need to put this in writing and have you sign it, they can just claim they told you. My husband and I both have arthritis and are in so much pain from being stuck to having nothing but a loveseat recliner to sleep on. These people were paid in full immediately by debit card in good faith to deliver us a brand new bed and they did NOT deliver and now refuse to refund our money so we can buy one elsewhere. NEVER buy from this BJ Stevens company. Any concern for their community and customers they had while Barry was at the helm is gone!

The advice and guidance we received was excellent, and the depth of knowledge Mike Ovenden brought to the decision making was very impressive. Since then we have had a problem with only one appliance, made by Electrolux, which self-destructed on its first clean. Electrolux was completely uncooperative. It turns out the problem is a familiar one (check online) and so common that there are *no replacement parts* available for the problem, period. Mike had no more success than we did. But Mike and The Appliance Center DID work hard to make things right for us, which involved replacing the oven with one made by another manufacturer, at a hugely discounted price. We are glad to be rid of Electrolux and so very pleased to be working with the Appliance Center and Mike Ovenden.

UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW: I posted the below two months ago -- and would like to update it based…read moreon a response by the long-time owner of the Appliance Center, Mr. Stewart, who appears to be trying to hand over the business to others. A few weeks ago, Mr. Stewart left a very nice message on my voicemail apologizing for what we went through after only now having learned about it (perhaps from this review). He immediately offered to pick up the old hood and refund the money we spent on it. I have since had another very nice conversation with him, and he has picked up the hood. It is clear that this is not how he wants his business to run. We are building a custom home and were instructed by our contractor to work with The Appliance Center to get all appliances. So we did -- and deeply regret it. This is not true of most of the vendors we worked with - we had many very positive experiences. But The Appliance Center stands out as the worst. The most illustrative of our negative experience was around a kitchen island hood -- we made very clear from the beginning that we needed a hood that would accommodate my height (6'2") and were assured the hood they recommended would be no problem. When installed, sharp edges were exactly at eye level -- and we were told it could not be moved higher. I asked whether they would take it back and swap it out for one that works and was told they would not -- we were now stuck paying thousands of dollars for a hood we could not use. No apology, no sense of accountability and no effort to make it right. They then proposed 4 other hoods I could buy from them. At this point I was appropriately skeptical - and so I learned how to read the spec sheets. It turns out that each of the 4 hoods they now proposed would have created exactly the same problem. When I pointed this out, they agreed and admitted they had misread the spec sheets (just as they had with the first hood) and, for the first time, used the word "apologize". But had I just ordered one of their replacements, I am sure they would have made me pay for that one too. I was then literally left to fend for myself and find a hood that would work - they seemed uninterested in helping further, all this after close to $50,000 of payments for everything we had ordered from them for a fairly large house. I would recommend staying clear of people who conduct business this way. (Before posting this review, I shared it with Michael, the Appliance Center person we worked with, and asked if what I describe was accurate. He had no corrections to make - and nothing to add.)

G&H had a good selection. They were very friendly, and helpful. Their prices are competitive with Lowes and Home Depot (actually $2 cheaper, by design). Unfortunately we live pretty far out of their delivery zone, so we weren't able to purchase the KitchenAid we viewed. Still, I wanted to recommend anyone in the market to give G&H a shot.

We called G & H and they promptly sent out a repairman. Long story short, the part needed was not readily available. David at G & H called me everyday to give me an update and delivered us a brand new unit when the "old" one couldn't be repaired in a timely manner. Hands down the best customer service I have experienced in a very long time. Thank you G & H for taking the sting out of a frustrating problem. We will be back to purchase future appliances from you! You stand behind your products. There is no doubt in my mind that had we purchased the refrigerator from a big box store we would still be without a usable unit. Thanks so so much!
